I think I've heard of this series. The premise (not that it's hard to sort out from the game) is that Natsuki is a high school girl who's really into karate, so she's constantly getting into karate fights while dealing with the usual high school crap. It's why she wears a gi in some stages and her school uniform in others.
The game isn't so much a Street Fighter knock-off as an Art of Fighting knock-off. When Natsuki is fighting in her orange gi, she's almost a carbon copy (gender flipped, of course) of Ryo/Takuma, with the spinning kick, flurry of punches attack, and point-blank stationary fireball. And the purple pants guy looks like a non-crossdressing version of King.
So it's not a knock-off of Street Fighter but a knock-off of a knock-off of Street Fighter. (Kidding. 😁 I liked Art of Fighting and got all your AoF references.)
That breakdown of the “girls crying in the background” scene reminds me of Salute Your Shorts episode 10, in which they are watching a dubbed episode of Cisco Kid: “Ok, I think I’ve figured this out. That guy seems to like that girl, and that girl seems to like that guy. But the guy seems to like his horse better than he likes the girl.” - Michael Stein
I'm always interested in old and obscure anime and manga, so I did some basic looking into this one! なつきクライシス (literally "Natsuki Crisis" using the actual English word "Crisis") seems to be an uber typical 90s seinen schoolgirl x battle manga. Natsuki is both the best fighter in her school and also super hot, so of course tons of dudes want to get with her. But of course the only thing SHE'S horny for.... is martial arts! Enter a revolving door of weirdos who want to bone and/or challenge her. The most interesting thing about this series, to me, is that it ran for EIGHTEEN VOLUMES!! So it was clearly fairly popular (enough to get an SNES game and a 2 episode OVA). It makes me wonder if this might be one of those series that is secretly actually quite famous in Japan despite being unknown in English (like PriPara, Ginga Densetsu, KochiKame, etc). Could it be quietly influential, the origin of dozens of tropes still popular today and kicking off the "Tough girls doing martial arts" genre that was so popular in the 90s and 00s?? Is Natsuki the blueprint for Akane, Miu, and Aya?! Or was it just barely consistent enough to keep food on the table for it's author for the better part of a decade. Somebody out there knows! And that somebody is not me lol
The story in this game looks kinda funny. It's like a typical 90s high school comedy + action anime, so I guess the story mode just follows different arcs from the manga with you playing the main character, Natsuki.
@@Justforvisit Well, if you're asking seriously, violet is a deeper color and a bit more blue than lavender. It's the color between blue and purple. Modernly it's sometimes used interchangeably with purple, but that'd be incorrect. I know most people don't care that much about exact color names, but I do and I think it's fun to know this stuff. Plus it's useful as an artist to be able to communicate more precisely which color you mean.
I was thinking the same! Pixel art and backgrounds have a charm to it. Gameplay looks to have solid fighting game mechanics to it. Many moves look like legit martial arts moves.
Wrasslin' terminology for "flying chest attack" is "splash". One variation would be Sting's "Stinger Splash" which I think he normally does in the corner turnbuckle.
Strangely enough, in the late 90s, a buddy of mine and I were getting really into anime, and we sent away for some fan-subbed video tapes. Without knowing anything, I picked Natsuki Crisis as my main pick. I still have that tape. Over a decade later, that friend, through his brother who I was also good friends with, gave me the Natsuki Crisis manga. I am not sure if there's a point here, but if there is, I think it means I'm an accidental Natsuki Crisis super fan. I've never played the game though, so not so super as super fans go. Hearing the background behind this, I'm not shocked to see and hear that it's pretty decent, and that's pretty cool.
Tose is actually pretty infamous. They're the most successful ghost developer in the world, making games for other companies without taking credit. (Although they will take credit if allowed.) And from what I understand, basically, they will make a game that's exactly as good as whatever they're being paid. Pay for trash, get trash. Pay for gems, get gems.
I bet more people in this country have read this manga than have seen The Pagemaster during its run in theaters. Game looks fun to play "any way you can," but I think I'd rather see that anime "any way you can."
translation for you from 0:45 "if you lose, how about you date me?" 0:50 Mr. Purplepants "I'll definitely make you fall for me" , 0:58 "This guy is full of himself",
I really feel like Super Godzilla would have benefited from copying this gameplay style. One on one fights with story stuff in between. But can also see how frustrating it would get if the fighting wasn't more polished.
I would say at least in the case of Yu Yu Hakusho final that's a crappy comparison considering that's a decent game Rama's okay this one looks mediocre as all hell.
"It's difficult to get the special moves to work consistently." That's pretty bad, considering how difficult it is in games like Street Fighter to get those moves to work consistently.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's an unofficial fan translation to the manga which is probably about as good as we're likely to get for something of this age. Same goes for the anime. Realistically there's little to no chance a company would bother to go to the trouble to even sub something like this nowadays.
I really only feel like that's a good quality if it's trying to be different and good at being something different. It's okay to be similar as long as it's competent, cuz otherwise (as we see here) you'll be compared to other better games.
The walking animations are really stiff and goofy. Typical TOSE, never quite getting their games over the threshold of "good." I recently bought Scarlet Nexus for my Xbox, and I'm relieved it only cost me ten dollars.
Beats up a disco dancer then immediately takes on Sagat.

One of those series that are great for breakefest.
Yes. Exactly
Hard agree. Especially if you are taking the Browns to the Super Bowl
Yeah makes me not feel so bad about having to go to work!

Holy shit, she is ABSOLUTELY a clone of Ryo. It's not even remotely subtle.

No matter how many times I hear that it always surprises me.
It also surprises me how many people still don't know it.
I happy to see that Purple Pants are finally getting a game where they can reach their max potential!
Purple pants is the hero we didn't know we needed.
Love that story. Literally ANY issue can be settled by fighting. Just like real life.
Violence solves anything.
Sometimes you just need to throw an elbow

That's how I got through high school.

How can you tell if your date cares about what is on the inside? They have a devastating liver hook.

3:32 "Let's attack aggressively"
Man, there are about 4000 manga/anime licensed fighting games on the SFC…at least this one kind of builds a story
2:27 she kinda looks like she's cosplaying Ryo from the AOF/SNK games. similar moves too.

Love the fact that there are many lovers for old nintendo, sega games...always had a feeling that there are not many of us
Lavender is slightly more blue, orchid is a bit more red, amethyst is spot on. Purple is also acceptable.
What about violet?

I love this game totally inconsistent character shadows.
THAT'S IT
i felt something was off but couldn't tell what it was
Pretty sure they are both there flickering very fast but the TH-cam video is messing with the frame rate.
Play the game and you'll get why they look like that. This video is 30 fps so it messes with how the shadow looks. You need to watch it at 60 fps
420 points with 69 seconds left in the match at 4:20 in the video, if you tell me that wasn’t intentional you’re a god damn liar.
All right that's incredible.
Intentional or not I have to give give it my personal seal of approval.
Well, it •looks• good. Without the warning on how it handles I'd be tempted to pick this one up.

loved your interpretation of the story lol
I would love to see a SD Snatcher review. A little obscure but it seems right up your alley.
I'm a sucker for urban- and suburban-Japan backgrounds in Super Famicom games. The ones in this game look really nice.
Wrasslin' terminology for "flying chest attack" is "splash". One variation would be Sting's "Stinger Splash" which I think he normally does in the corner turnbuckle.
I really appreciate your consistently correct pronunciation of manga.
Great vid, I'm still waiting for a snes homebrew video

Finally someone's says something about this game... I like it, the OVA and Manga is ok.
Good review.. I happy now.
Ah, the fact this is an OVA anime explains a lot. I should probably go look for some fans translations of the manga though.
Too bad the ova only had 2 episodes. It was great

Natspurple Purple Crisis
The music sounds really nice, between that and the graphics, this game kind reminds me of Super Variable Geo. I'll be sure to give it a go.
I dig the music too. Thanks for the video!
Amethyst. Definitely amethyst.
lmao @4:20 the 420 69... that couldnt have been an accident

The color purple fighting game.
0:40 This game(manga/anime) is totally not believable, DSP can't have all those muscles.
That guy in the purple shorts is definitely not Sagat.
I remembered the 2 episode ova.. I never knew there was a game
You should take a look at Super Variable Geo for your next forgotten games video.
I played it. It isn't too bad but I had my fair share of struggle on it and I had to read its source material to understand what is going on.
The stage with rain made me get this game instantly any way I could 😉

Nice vid 👍
Good video but theirs a small small issue, the video title is wrong since it says Battle Crisis instead of Crisis Battle.
Damn, the main character really hates purple. Gypsy from MST3K better watch out!
How have you not done a video on street fighter 2 alpha! Probably the best fighter on =the snes!
Title should be:Japan High scool fighting simulator.
Lilac. Obviously
Looks thoroughly okay! Lol
i have a big soft spot for crusty fighters like this one
doesn't look too bad for a licensed game / SF clone. The chick in the red reminded me of Ryo or Dan, not really Ken though.
Yeah the animations look great, the attacks are a bit sloppy though.
Making Tuesdays Thursdays and charity streams great again!
Seems to at least try to be different from SF. I think that's a bonus

This game is a hate crime against people wearing purple clothes lol
I've played several fighting games for snes..... I'm not a fan of most. I might check it out just to see what it's like. Not touching the anime.
Fighting games on the SNES were hit and miss at best. The vast majority were pretty mediocre even then and have aged like fine milk.
Yay!

Looks unique but unfortunately seems like it doesn't live up to its interesting features.
They really hate purple in this game
