Good review! I think there was an English patch released for this a few years ago, so it might make things a bit easier to understand. I played this one many years ago and it was fun. I'm just so used to modern Tetris games now that it might be difficult to go back to classic Tetris. I do like the concept of a puzzle battle, but it sounds like the character roster is obviously a bit unbalanced in their abilities! 😅

I was on a tetris soundtrack binge a while back and downloaded this one from KHInsider...never played the game, but the soundtrack is bangin. Other ones with great music I recommend are Acid Tetris, Tetris Pro for Amiga, Tetris the Grand Master (like 3 of them), and of course cd-i Tetris
Always been a huge tetris fan and on whim one day about 10 years ago I decided to research all of the tetris games made for super nintendo (both in US and Japan) and discovered this gem. It is in my regular rotation of SNES games that I play to this day. I have turned many friends on to it as well. It is SUPER fun to go head to head with a friend.
I've been the host of the Tetris Battle Gaiden tournament as part of the warm-up for Classic Tetris European Championships for a couple of years now, and it's a really fun versus game with a lot of strategy in regards to which character you choose (I usually go with tiny pink bunny or the princess) and what level of powerups to use (levels 1 and 2 are usually the defensive ones).... and if it's an even match the speed will increase after a while, as sort of a built-in mechanism to stop two equally skilled players from playing forever.... and small correction: you can only hold up to 4 of those yellow orbs at once....
This is the first I'm hearing of this and I'm already in love with it! The characters look cute and I bet this could make for some really heated competitive matches.
Have you ever tried Dossun Genseki Battle. It's my favourite Super Famicom puzzle game. Would be nice to see it in a Super Famicom puzzle video or something
I love this game. Me and my middle school friends played this game all day and night during summer break. We played so much we see blocks in our sleep.
An old buddy and me (both took years of Japanese a long time ago, so super rusty) fired this one up a few years ago and loved it. Trying to figure it out while getting cross-faded was awesome. We made sure to never look it up so it was really all up to our impaired brains to piece together.
There's also a code to play as the two boss characters from the single-player mode, who have even more absurd powers. Definitely a top five competitive game on the system for me.
This one reminds a bit of Salior Moon Super S also SFC exclusive, but this seems a bit more complex and faster. Another great Tetris that's also exclusive for SFC is Tetris 3, great music and sounds though not much variety on those. That also has some interesting extra variant modes

I once played Tetris off of “Tetris and Dr. Mario” with a friend. We were rolling on MDMA. Whenever you get a 4-line Tetris in that game, it plays a high pitched squealing noise and piles lines onto your opponents screen- we were crying laughing every time it happened. Good times.
Never would’ve thought that Japan made their own Tetris game and it’s a competitive puzzle game,and it has ninjas fighting yokai monsters. Japan always make something so simple and turn it into something awesome.
The Princess has a Level 2 magic who counters the magic of the other player (who would suffer the effects of her own magic if they are bad). An another good thing of this game is that you had 3 different "rules" to play, Battlis (the main mode) Rensa (Battlis but the pieces had gravity and they fall) and Tetris (regular Tetris with no magic). There are also 2 secret characters, but they were more powerful than the regular ones.
The title and the multiplayer gameplay reminds me of the old browser game called Tetris Battle, which was very popular years ago. Anyway, why is the English patch calls it Tetris Battle Spinoff when Gaiden means side story though.
I wish we had this as a kid. We would have gotten to know every character and their spells inside out as well as jerk moves to piss each other off. It would have been a change of pace from rock n roll racing where we pump the other full of 9 missiles or where we go in reverse in mario kart just to hunt each other.
I remember playing this, I think my friend got an import of it (we lived in Hawaii, so there were some import shops that allowed you to buy Super Famicom games). It is absolutely fantastic. It's a fun spin on tetris.
I used to play this on my chipped snes via the wild card on a floppy disk, never mind that I didn’t understand any of the words on the screen it was still one of my faves.
I imported this one a year ago! definitely a fun twist on the classic tetris formula. could definitely use a modern-day upgrade with the Tetris: The Grand Master additions.
I got this game back in the days (I had a Super Wild Card which allowed me to discover tons of japanese games I could never have known otherwise), still to this day, I consider TBG the best Tetris-like game ever, and the funniest to play in versus mode, maybe alongside Super Puzzle Fighter :-)

have you played dossun ganseki block battle on super famicom? i think you would also be pleasantly frustrated by the fierce vs puzzler battling going on there, assuming of course you can stomach columns-like puzzling
Just an fyi for people there is an English (and Spanish) patch for this game, alongside an addendum patch that unlocks the two bosses as playable characters on romhacking. Highly recommend them if you want to play the single player story mode.
Gonna be honest: the wolf samurai's pretty boss. But I have to wonder; the Bunny's name is Mirurun, which kinda reminds me of Maururun from WakuWaku7, who was a Totoro knock-off in the form of a big bunny monster. Does the suffix "rurun" mean anything in particular?
I’ve seen the shared pieces queue in Tetris 2 and that game can get intense, but this game looks even crazier. Some of those spells look so unfair, lol
I wouldn't call Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon), Yoshi's Cookie or Wario's Woods etc. Tetris varients. They are early match-three games and have more similarities with Columns (or Chain Shot! or Dr. Mario) than Tetris.

Cosmo Gang is great, they released in the west as Pac-Attack but the game looked awful than the Cosmogang One.
