Secret of Evermore is still one of my favorite games ever. I just love it, especially on a cold winter day cozy'd up inside for an afternoon or 2 or 3 and going through it. Great game.
Love the fact that u use ingredients rather than magic points for spells. This game is missing something, cant quite put my finger on it, but its a childhood fave
@SNES drunk You know, Secret of Mana has a gameplay improvement patch which allows you to assign spells to four hotkeys (A, B, X, and Y) which lets you cast spells in real-time without pausing the game. It's simply called the "gameplay improvement patch" if you're interested.
www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=20093.500 Here's a link to the patch btw, the patch fixes more than just the magic system, adding changes such as the inclusion of light and heavy attacks, longer range for bows, etc. Also yes, the man who made the patch (calls himself Zhade) is still working on it for improvements to this day, so try it out if you guys are interested. I personally cannot play SoM without Zhade's miracle of a patch anymore lol.
I wish they leaned more heavily on the original theme song in the crowd funded "Shadowrun Returns" that cane out in 2013. I played that whole game only to finally hear that wicked tune played at during the last boss fight.
I remember many years ago having played Shadowrunn and at that time no sequal I rang Capcom in Japan but forgot about the time difference and got the early morning cleaners:(
12:54 "Unfortunately this one [SD3] never left Japan officially..." ...until now! Trials of Mana, both an official localized port of the original, and a remake in the works set for release next year.
I certainly enjoyed SoE, but like Secret of Mana, I always reach a point where I just lose interest and my attention drifts to something else. Never finished either, despite best intentions.
Evermore is probably my most replayed rpg ever. There's something so special about it. No other SNES game, or any game for that matter, has an atmosphere and sound design quite like the way evermore does it. The graphics and engine are really nice too. It feels faster and more refined over mana. The alchemy system is a lot more interesting too. They could have just gone with mp, but combining ingredients is way more interesting. And then there's the different currencies to use in different parts of the world. So many great ideas.
Secret of Evermore is still my favorite action RPG after all these years. The alchemy system, dog, soundtrack, and story all just blended together so well. I actually loved the flea market portion of the game and the occasional hiccups in hit detection didn't bother me much.
What people don't understand about the game is that the "bad hit detection" is actually your attack missing due to the enemy's evasion stat Hit and evasion are stats
I remember buying secret of evermore as I loved secret of mana, so I bought it at toys r us when it came out and fell in love! The art style is so dope
One thing i really appreciate about your videos is the way you cut to black at the end so the video links don't block the game-play footage, its a small thing, but it bugs me so much when other videos don't do it. Nice job.
A lot of times they just blanketly put them on all of their videos when that feature launched a few years ago, so that's why they're completely out of place a lot of the time.
Great video! Terranigma is my favorite SNES game hands down. It's also a game that I never would have found out about had it not been for the emulation scene. Happy Thanksgiving!
Id also probably go with Terranigma as my favorite game on the snes or my favorite action rpg ive played at this point. The combat is just so satisfying ,the approach to story felt very unique, and the atmosphere is just so gripping more so than even modern games ive played with vastly more advanced graphics.
Terranigma is one of the best RPG's ever made. It was really ambitious at the time. I think this game didn't get too much attention because Chrono Trigger was released a few months before and Playstation was just released too. Square-Enix should consider a remaster or at least a port.
Pretty sure the killer for Terranigma was that it was never released in america and it wasnt released in Europe until december 1996 which is about13 months after its original Japanese release and after the N64 had come out.
Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, & Brain Lord were the first RPGs I ever played & I love those games. Star Ocean & Tales of Phantasia are definitely some of the best RPGs on the SNES
I honestly cant remember my first rpg. But if i had to put money on the line, id probably say FF3 (or ff6 because they decided to name them weirdly over in the west) But that said, Evermore, Gaia, and Brain Lord are hands down my most favorite action rpgs. I even have the final bug lair thing in brain lord mapped out in excell somewhere on my pc XD
The spellcasters in "Tales Of Phantasia" were surprisingly useful. A party of one physical fighter an three spellcasters for an extended amount of time is usually really awkward in a lot of RPGs, but in "Tales Of Phantasia" it works really well, and the spells are actually useful.
Looking at the description. You played ALL of these, wow this is going to be an interesting video, thanks for taking the time to play all of these and bring attention to them, I'm not familiar with some of them.
Yeah, I can't really think of games to compare them to, haven't played evo, but Choas seed is really worth playing if you're into that kind of game, it's really well made for what it is, it just takes a substantial time commitment, to learn everything and finish it, the tutorial alone takes about half an hour. It's addicting once you get into it.
Secret of Evermore and Terrangima are my two highest rated Action RPGs on the SNES. Evermore for its unmatched sound and atmosphere design. Terrangima for it's story and soundtrack.
The tales of phantasia rom I have found always crashes. I've tried others but I always get the same issue. Which sucks. Probably the emulator. As I only have a phone no computer, I'm pretty limited to emulators. I use super retro 16.
I remember downloading a Tales of Phantasia english rom about 20 years ago. It had tons of cursing in it and some sexual innuendo jokes. I found it very weird for an SNES game to have such content so I guessed the translator went a bit crazy with the script.
Really glad you had included Shadowrun, with another brief mention at the end. Watching a friend play that game back when it had come out, really woke me up to ideas and thoughts on other games that may be different. So with that, it opened me up to random PSOne and PS2 purchases later down the line. While games like Final Fantasy VI (3 in NA) and Super Mario RPG opened me up to RPGs in general, games such as Shadowrun taught me to seek out games that indeed were a little to VERY different. I help contribute it to my wide range of personal tastes in genre and games themselves. Including some terrible games I know are really bad games, but ones that I personally love and enjoy playing.
I always loves Secret of Evermore. There is just something about it. It's a flawed game with a steep difficulty curve, but once you get used to it, it's totally worth it. It's a very unique experience and I personally like it more than Secret of Manna.
damn, dude. I was actually blown away after watching this. There are so many good games on SNES that doesn't get recognized well. Everyone's fav Secret of Mana is just a potato if compared to the other games, lol.
I tried out Chaos Seed after seeing it in this video. Wow, I think this is the most I've enjoyed a video game. Awesome sprite work, awesome gameplay, awesome role playing elements and story, probably the best 16bit top down action. I hate replaying levels, but on this game going back and getting alternate endings is just as fun as playing it the first time. The translation by d&d has alot of character keeps my laughing through the cutscenes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Thanks!

The defining difference in an RPG is a numeric leveling and experience growth system, while adventure games are usually defined by inventory and puzzle solving. The only Zelda which is an RPG is Zelda 2, since it has an xp growh system.
Yeah, I feel like a lot of people forget about what an adventure game is at its core. But at the same time, I still feel strange about Legend of Zelda since it still feels RPG-like even knowing it shouldn't be considered one. A lot of adventure games wouldn't allow yourself to strengthen yourself so much and leave it on the optional side. I also wonder whether a game like Devil May Cry or God of War is considered an action RPG since I felt like they were.
@@sigurdtheblue Linear games with little to no exploration, instead of having a big interconnected world, you just clear the stages one after another, no real inventory system, no towns, no quests, yet you can "level up" so to speak. You're the reason I checked out Brain Lord and I absolutely loved that game! Looks like you just introduced me to another couple of games that may becomes favourites of mine [Alcahest & Front Mission Gun Hazard]
I am always surprised that you are so "negative" /meh on Illusion of Time/Gaia, it has such a unique mood and the soundtrack is amazing, and the final boss fight is so cool/ your 3rd form in general. I loved that game so much.
I played through the quintet trilogy for the first time last year and Illusion of Gaia ended up being my least favourite of the three, I don’t know what it is but I feel like some of its cutscenes and story moments dragged on forever, don’t get me wrong though I think it’s a good game and I still enjoyed it.
@@ArcaneAzmadi I only played the German version. :) Been a few years since I last replayed it but I always thought they did a good enough job on that one.
@CybersheII ^^ that's how I feel about Soul Blazer, I can't stand the combat and gameplay, the soundtrack or the story. I love Terranigma the most. Illusion of time is a close second though. The swapping of characters, the extremely cool and mysterious soundtrack. It's just pure love for me.
Been watching your videos for a little over two years and I as a SNES fanatic your channel is the best. I always seem to agree with you 98% of the time and this video proves it. Also, enjoy how you tell everyone to enjoy the rest of their day (or Thanksgiving in this case).
Great video! I sent it to my partner that I’m developing a top down action rpg with. A lot of the games that influenced our style are games I learned about from this channel, so this was a really great summation.
I remember reading about Secret of Evermore in my Nintendo Power . I loved reading about how rich the sound and music was . Bought the game when it came out and loved it . And the Composer and sound for the game It never clicked until I did my research years later . Hint and spoiler : he did the The Elder Scrolls . Name Jeremy Soule .
I remember when i first got my hands on it, and was like 'oh this is like secret of mana, but with SCIENCE!' and never looked back. I still have yet to beat it though XD The biggest flaw i always thought it had was the fact that weapons leveled independently, and they become a major pain to level up in the later areas :/ Alchemy is busted af tho xD
The Sega Genesis version is also really good. It's totally different than the SNES version but it's very open-world before open-world games became a thing.
Being a gamer over many years who have played hundreds of games on all kinds of systems and from almost every era I can say that Terranigma is hands down the best game I ever played.
I just started playing front mission: gun hazard. It's a really stellar game. I'm amazed how well the story and the gameplay complented each other nicely. It feels like i'm playing a mecha anime or an action movie. However it's pretty grindy for me. A bit too much perhaps. I'm pretty much stuck at the helicopter mission in borukta (borkuta?) atm. Would you perhaps have some advice for me on that mission?
Kinda cool seeing some Shadowrun love! I fell in love with Shadowrun back in the early 90's with the SNES game and later reinforced by the Genesis game, which lead me to check out the tabletop RPG and then the CCG. The "new" Shadowrun games by HBS are pretty good, but they don't perfectly capture what I loved about the old console games, so I'm still hoping for something like that!
I always felt it'd be amazing to see remakes of a lot of these RPGs but done in a different way. Like imagine Illusion of Gaia, or Holy Umbrella done in the style of the new Tomb Raider games. Like a third person RPG where you're basically a kid trying to survive against these immense odds, having to learn how to patch up your wounds and just barely making it through each situation. The people of the realm think you're a great hero, but really every fight you're just making it through with pure survivor's luck.
Star Ocean is a masterpiece. The story is really amazing and ambitious for a 16 bit game, it's one of my favorites. Seiken Densetsu is pretty good too. Terranigma is one of the best SNES's games and one of the best RPG's ever made. The historical references, the plot twist and some emotional moments are really ahead of it's time. Sadly this game didn't get so much attention because Chrono Trigger was just released and Playstation was something people talked about all the time.
I used to play an action-RPG game years back with my brother. I remember how the game looked/played but I could never remember the title for YEARS. Ultima: Runes of Virtue II. So glad I gave this video a viewing!
This showed up randomly in my suggested videos, and I'm impressed enough with your content that I wanted to comment. Your summaries, gameplay footage, use of words, and vocal tone were all excellent and I'm excited to see your other videos based on the quality of this one. Your biggest flaw is probably that you didn't enjoy Secret of Evermore's market section XD
I always love to hear about Illusion of Gaia. It was one of my favorite games growing up, and one detail you glossed over was the incredible music. Maybe it's because I was very young playing it, but many of the flute tunes and the ruin music still give me chills.
11:32 I loved Secret of Evermore as a child. I thought it was great that they made a western version of Secret of Mana. There is a ROM hack to enable 2 player with the dog.
@@SuperNintendoZach No sorry. English is not my native language and we don't have Thanksgiving. I just wanted say good thanksgiving, nothing else. I am not disrespecting by writing it wrong on purpose.
This has to be the tenth or so time I've come back to this video. It's one of the most useful videos for retro gamers, since there are so many ARPGs on the SNES and I often get confused because a lot of them are very similar.
Thanks SNES drunk. This is by far my favourite game genre on SNES. I have most of the NTSC ones, a few repros of Japan only and played them all too many times to count. It's great to see the number of Japan only ones you uncover. I'll be sure to play them anyway I can ;) Keep up the great work you do. This will definitely be one I'll keep re-watching
I rented "Lord of the Rings Vol 1" a few times when I was a kid, and I even beat the game.... But I don't really remember too much good about it, except that the music is really nice. There's a decent game there if you have a LOT of patience, but it's hard to recommend it.

It still amazes me the amount of good snes games that never were released outside of japan (officially).
Thanks for another amazing video.
Thank you for watching!
This is the Best video of RPG action ever and Forever, thanks snes drunk!!
Thanks for breaking down the differences in RPGs. Layin' down the knowledge. We love all your sterff. Keep it up and have a good rest of your thanksgiving!
You're the reason I checked out Brain Lord and I absolutely loved that game!
Looks like you just introduced me to another couple of games that may becomes favourites of mine [Alcahest & Front Mission Gun Hazard]
Enjoy
I know everyone else is already thanking you, but seriously we all super appreciate the content! Considering picking up a shirt too
Thank you for watching!
I am always surprised that you are so "negative" /meh on Illusion of Time/Gaia, it has such a unique mood and the soundtrack is amazing, and the final boss fight is so cool/ your 3rd form in general. I loved that game so much.
One of the best games on snes
I played through the quintet trilogy for the first time last year and Illusion of Gaia ended up being my least favourite of the three, I don’t know what it is but I feel like some of its cutscenes and story moments dragged on forever, don’t get me wrong though I think it’s a good game and I still enjoyed it.
I think it's a classic, but the English translation _is_ really, really, REALLY bad.
SNESDrunk I want you to have a great rest of your day any way you can.
I love coming to your channel because every other video I discover a new game to love. This channel rocks!
Action RPGs is my favorite genre. And SNES my "all time" favorite console. So this topic is a no-brainer for me.
Seriously. I owned almost all of these SNES games lol
@@uglyfxxx6981 cool!
@JulianRock Secret of Evermore and Mana and Zelda obviously (not saying that the other games aren't as great as well !)
Great video! I sent it to my partner that I’m developing a top down action rpg with. A lot of the games that influenced our style are games I learned about from this channel, so this was a really great summation.
Thank you for watching!
@@DaMoniable there is a patch that makes weapon level up in groups, and magic as well
videos of chaos seed, gotta be one of the most gorgeous snes game I've ever seen
Shadowrun was a real treat on the SNES. Such a unique and pleasant experience, which seems to be in short supply these days.
The Sega Genesis version is also really good. It's totally different than the SNES version but it's very open-world before open-world games became a thing.
Being a gamer over many years who have played hundreds of games on all kinds of systems and from almost every era I can say that Terranigma is hands down the best game I ever played.
Sadly, we don't have thanksgiving where i come from. But thank you for the wishes nonetheless. And thank you for your recommendation
Thank you for watching!
I liked the way Secret of Mana paused the game for the magic system. It made it possible to spam spells as well as give you a moment to strategize.
Nice video. Your channel is amazing for discovering 16 bit videogames. I really like your videos.
Thank you for watching!
I think on balance Terranigma is my favourite action RPG on the SNES, it really surprised me, but Secret of Mana has that soundtrack.
I remember the first time I played it! Was great. Never finished it. Then I couldn't find it for a while. I will be revisiting soon!
@@nxlevelsicc/ You really should finish the game. It's a game that stuck with me (in a positive way), and still does.
There is a ROM hack to enable 2 player with the dog.
hope one day we will have a rom hack that fixes the level design of the dungeons 0_0
You got my thumbs up the second I saw Brain Lord so early. My personal favorite and I love pretty much all of these! Well done sir.
I don't have Thanks Giving, but I wish you a good rest of your day (and good Thanks Giving).
Have a great day

If it is wrong, then sorry.
@@thingsiplay you did it on purpose its a huge insult, massive OOF my main man.
@@SuperNintendoZach No sorry. English is not my native language and we don't have Thanksgiving. I just wanted say good thanksgiving, nothing else. I am not disrespecting by writing it wrong on purpose.

This is my new favorite channel! I've been telling myself for yonks I gotta get into SNES RPG's so this will be my reference fosho!!!
23:42 "If you found this one too Ys-y..."
Iiii see what you did there
Great video, I love the effort you put into making these and I love using this channel to find hidden gems from Japan :D
Thank you!
25 neat minutes of SNES drunkness!
Drakkhen is a good game but you just have to figure it out a few things first.
I'll be sure to play them anyway I can ;)
Keep up the great work you do. Enjoy your style and format in these videos every Tuesday and Thursday. I've watched all your videos and always keep going back to them (especially the soundtrack ones). This will definitely be one I'll keep re-watching
Thanks for watching!
Nice, now I know what to add to my collection. Thanks, SNES Drunk!
Thank you for watching!
A breath of fresh air in the smog of videos about turn-based rpgs. Keep up the good work!
Great video! I've been looking everywhere for action RPG and you conveniently have them all here. I had to favorite this video for future reference.
Thanks for watching!
I'm glad that you gave a nod to Shadowrun! That game is super fun and I still get its soundtrack stuck in my head from time to time.
I rented "Lord of the Rings Vol 1" a few times when I was a kid, and I even beat the game.... But I don't really remember too much good about it, except that the music is really nice.
There's a decent game there if you have a LOT of patience, but it's hard to recommend it.
terranigma, soul blazer. secret of evermore ,actraiser saga, secret of mana saga, illusion of gaia, super metroid, Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof ,zelda offcoarse,Dragon View, Brandish,Spike McFang and mutch more, i love snes since comming out on 90s :D :D :D
The graphics in Chaos Seed 😍
This is one of the best reco videos I've ever seen. So many gems... Thank you.
8:12 some things u can’t unsee 🤦🏽♂️
😂
I played Brainlord. Great game honestly and loved having two critters following you around doing different things.
Good Lord man! I better get something to drink! This may take a while!!
Shadowrun is one of those games I remember just getting completely lost in. Haven't played it in forever so I wonder how it still holds up. But a lot of these I've never heard of before. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for watching!
Happy Thanksgiving SNES Drunk. 🍻 Cheers!

Thanks for the video. I appreciate the timestamps in the description as well.
