Here here to 9 more years! Idk how long ago it was, maybe 5 years, when I pulled up the entire SNESDrunk review playlist, hit shuffle, and started doing work on my car. It was a blissful few hours of listening to obscure person references and great game knowledge. As someone who's first console was a SNES, thank you so much for this amazing channel.

Possibly the most significant thing about this game: the music was composed by Yukihiro Takahashi, a member of the seminal Japanese techno group Yellow Magic Orchestra. It's the only game he ever composed for. It's not a great soundtrack but it has some unusual instrumentation for SNES.

      That's the second irony.
That what became the PlayStation was actually a CD add-on for the SNES originally and would end up completely bulldozing and steamrolling over the N64 thanks to the CD format. So not only was the abandoned CD add-on what created the PlayStation brand it's also the reason the PlayStation used CDs.
Even though the CD lazer was actually made by Phillips as in the Philips CD-i but that's a whole other story.

Japanese people use a lot of German words, especially in movies and games. Like in the Final Fantasy fighting game Ehrgeiz. As a German it surprises me to this day, I don't know why they feel protracted to our language though.

    • @crispyjuice2110

I don't fully understand it but there's a lot to the German and Japanese connection. Historically the Japanese saw themselves as the "rightful rulers" of Asia, and it seems they saw Germany as sort of the same as them. Germany is often portrayed in Japanese media as "the smartest/strongest/best/etc" of Europe.

hah, what a time to upload this.
so I used to stream a segment which I called Foreign Fridays on a now-dead site, but this was probably the most memorable to some friends of mine. specifically the area at 4:33
    with the bats.
God, I got stuck there for quite a while, but I think I forgot to upload it, lol.
the real reason it's interesting is because this is perfectly timed with my birthday, which is relevant because I want to start streaming again for at least a year, so now I gotta make sure to upload the playthrough.
it would have been really cool if this day was also your anniversary of snesdrunk, but either way, congrats 🎉.

I enjoyed Neugier but yeah, it's pretty short and unremarkable. One of the most interesting things about it is how it's an action RPG that encourages speed runs, you get graded when you finally finish in terms of time taken, enemies defeated, etc. And also, how it was the first game worked on by Masaharu Gotanda ("Masaking") of Star Ocean fame.

The whole fascination & love of all things German, by the Japanese goes back to the Meiji-Restoration Era, of the late 19th century, where Emperor Meiji & his government modernized Japan after centuries of isolation. The Meiji-Restoration era government, literally dragged Japan, kicking & screaming into the modern era from being literally a feudal country. Emperor Meiji & his prime ministers and high ranking statesmen where huge fans of all things German/Prussian. Like the German/Prussian virtues of discipline, punctuality, efficiency, hard work etc., the Prussian military, the German engineering and also fine arts/music.
They brought in German engineers to build infrastructure & also train the local engineers, many doctors, engineers, scientists of all sorts where sent to Germany to study, the modern Imperial Japanese Army/Navy was trained by Prussian officers. When a faction of traditionalist Samurais rebelled against Emperor Meiji, the rebellion was put down by the Imperial Army with help of these Prussian military ''advisors'' and the Japanese Constitution is heavily influenced by the Constitution of the German Kaiserreich and the statesmanship of chancellor Bismarck.(they pretty much copied entire sections of their Constitution from the Germans/Prussians and also the Japanese legal system is highly influenced by the German one) . German classical composers like Wagner or Strauss became also very popular and generally speaking, the Japanese love things like German beer and trad. German cuisine.

I've never found out exactly why, but in the 80s, Japanese game & anime culture seemed obsessed with Greco-Roman mythology, In the 90s I guess that got old and Germanic & Nordic mythology & terms became the cool thing. You end up with a number of properties working in German or German-sounding titles.
