    I had the same experience with Behr deck over paint. Some how water gets trapped under the paint and in the wood turning everything to crap. What a job sanding, scraping, replacing boards. Going with a Cabot solid deck oil stain after I clean off the previous junk! Live and learn!

    Your deck looks exactly like mine after using the same product. My son and I sat out there are we were able to pull up about 75% of it by hand. And the wood was soaked underneath. I used an angle grinder with a diamabrush attachment to remove the rest. Will sand and then use a stain. Will never use Deck over ever again!!

    I used Behr DeckOver on my cedar deck a few years ago and had the same results. I don’t believe that the product is necessarily bad because it does adhere well and for a long time on deck railings, spindles, etc. that are COATED ON ALL 4 SIDES. I think that when you coat a deck board on 1 SIDE, it’s just a matter of time before water soaks into the sides and bottom of the board and with a little sun and evaporation the water vapor tries to escape up and through the DeckOver. The result is peeling paint. I ended up sanding off all the DeckOver with a belt sander and using a semi-transparent deck stain (Ready Seal) and the results are great. The boards can “breathe” and the oil-based stain actually seals the wood from moisture intrusion. Sure, you need to re-apply it every 1-2 years but that is relatively easy. The end result is a beautiful and effective deck finish with good looks and some water sealing to help ward off rot.

      The railings n spindles are different wood so the absorbing of the material is different from the floor planks. Try sanding the floor planks fist not pressure wash n apply deckover 3 days after it rains n 3 days before it rains n watch the difference

      my best advice is to get it off ASAP. I waited too long and ended up wrecking parts of my deck.

    There are two choices for a wood deck -- a solid-colored product that looks good and will peel, or a transparent or semi-transparent product that does next to nothing and will look discolored and awful long before it peels (like Thompson water seal). I've tried three different types of stain -- two applied by me, and one applied by a professional. The one applied by the professional lasted the shortest time even though it was supposedly the best product. I paid $700 for the deck to be stained, and it was peeling a year later. I then used a product from Menards that was supposed to be a better alternative to Behr Deckover. It was marketed as a "lifetime" finish. You had to mix it from a powder with a separate container full of dye. The prep time made Behr Deckover look like a walk in the park. I literally had to sand the deck down to bare wood per manufacturers instructions. A week later, I finally applied that product. Two years later, it was peeling badly despite following all the instructions. I am now trying Deckover... but here's my point. All stain will deteriorate unless you have pristine wood and perfect conditions (no extreme weather, low humidity, etc). In the real world, the only realistic long-term solution to this problem is to rip up the wood and replace it with composite. Other than that, you're kidding yourself if you think you're going to find a magic product that lasts more than a couple of years.

      I'm happy to restain the deck ever few years as long as it doesn't destroy the wood it protects. This stuff traps in moisture and ruins it.

      @dwiggzmasterflex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil based stains are the way to go...you have to keep up with them on a year by year basis but if maintained well, they get richer and fuller as time goes on, assuming you're reapplying every year or 2.

    Thanks, I’m gonna with Veranda brand Composite decking (least expensive kind I can find and has a 15 year warranty). I tried Rustolium “Restore 10 X” and had the same problems (looked great the first summer, like crap by the spring 5 years in a row). Thanks again for the update bud👍🏽

    I have used Behr DeckOver as a professional painting contractor and have had good and bad experiences with it. For a few years, this product was all-the-rage as everyone wanted it for their decks, but I would not recommend using it. This video reminds me of my next door neighbors' deck as the coating is peeling and is wet underneath, however, the coating on his rails and balusters still looks good. Horizontal surfaces always take a beating on decks, but the product should last several years. I would recommend removing as much loose DeckOver on the deck as possible, sand and clean the surface and then apply at least two coats of a paint or stain.

      I couldn't agree more. This season, my wife and I decided to give up and rip the entire deck apart and replace with new. We went with Trex. Coating my pressure treated wood with this garbage discouraged me from using wood again. So far we're very happy with the Trex deck.
