I'm a painting contractor 38 years now I've used this product too many times to count never had any problems, I power wash with bleach beforehand. Remember this product is not an end-all it is for a deck that is cracked and weathered and for people who don't want to spend or can't afford to buy new decking material. P.S never use a roller always brush by hand morning is the best time for application.
Why not use a roller? It works the paint I to the wood/cracks/fibers. And I HATE Deckover. It look GREAT in the beginning. Until it starts peeling in 2 years.
We painted the deck last year with just one coat using a brush, and waited to see how this product held up. After a year, there were a few spots that peeled up, but nothing serious. Pretty satisfied, and will apply a second coat this year, and see what happens next year.
I used this on a wraparound deck and it changed the entire home. I even went very light grey, almost white and was impressed with the outcome. I know there have been complaints about peeling, etc. My contractor did the prep work and I have had no problems going on three years in. If you just slap it on over a dirty, unprepared deck it probably won't last. But when you power wash, sand where needed and pay attention to the actual directions it works great. No regrets.
Everyone read the directions where it says 2 coats required? I talked to the Behr rep and the thickness of the coating adds to the longevity. so.. follow the instructions.
I see a lot of people complaining about this product peeling and not lasting. If you read the product information, these resurfacers require the deck surface to be stripped, sanded, and filled to a bare and flat surface to adhere properly. Not removing old stain or paint and going over it is a recipe for disaster. Preparation is the most important factor with this product.
@@angelacarrillo6868 It's not meant for new wood. I wish there was a followup because this guy used it over oil based without stripping that off first.
We actually had to replace our old deck from the previous house owner.we rebuilt it ourselves with hard labor in redwood costing us an arm and a leg.well you know how you like to walk on a deck barefoot if you've ever had a sliver on the bottom of your foot and thought that hurt wait till you get one from redwood that's a real experience. So we decided to try the Behr deck cover in a reddish color and it covered nicely smoothing over the slivers that allowed us to walk over it barefoot many times.the deck is 3yrs old and standing up ok probably because the redwood was fresh cut an raw.there however is some fading and small cracks showing up so it's about time to get after it again before I get a sliver ..LOL
Question: Did the roller give texture to it, or did it roll on smooth? It looks smooth on video. I just want to make sure. Thank you for your videos. 😊
We used deck over on our deck roughly 5 years ago. It was terrible to work with, but looked beautiful for 1 summer. Then it was a matter if just watching it peel a bit more every year. Last year we removed a section of deck because the wood was rotting. This year we completely removed what was remaining. There were several areas where the wood was rotting. Upon looking at the under side, we could see that the wood was just completely wet underneath. So much that there was mold on some boards. I can understand a product not holding up, but never expected it to rot the deck.
Thank you. Your experience seals the deal for me. I will not buy this product. I cannot afford that to happen to wood patio. I will stain it yearly instead of HAVING TO REPLACE WOODEN DECK due to rotting because of the above product. 🙏🏾
You still talk to your brother @ Freakin' Reviews? LOL, thanks for the upload this came out great. I know this DeckOver has ton of negative reviews after a couple seasons so hopefully yours stays looking good. Most of the negative reviews were user error and maybe give us a quick update after the season is over to see how its holding up, thanks again.
So far no reviews from anyone 1-2 years after. Here's my take: While Deckover did look great after application, 1-2 years later it began to peel, especially on the old worn wood that Behr and similar products claim will work great. I expected this peeling and understood I'd have to reapply at this time. What I'm finding is after I peel off the paint I'm finding the old wood in much worse condition: wet, rotting. The product seems to act like rubber undercoating on a rusted auto frame. I'm believing that eventually the Deckover and like products eventually deteriorates, creating microscopic defects that allow moisture under thus causing an unseen deterioration of the wood. I installed new wood on the steps 2 years ago and the Deckover is still holding up. Seems to work great on new wood but just doesn't work well after 1-2 years on old wood that shows signs of neglect.
I put on deck over about 8 or 10 years ago have the same exact problem. I am now in the process of stripping the whole deck sanding etc and reapplying some other type of stain. I too noticed that when a piece peeled up the wood underneath was damp even if it had not rained for quite a while. In many areas the rotted wood actually adhered to the deck over.
I used it at my last house. It doest last very long and it destroys and eats right through the deck. Its a true deck over!!! Get it?!!! Deckover?!!! Lol yeah my husband fell right through the deck to the ground. Crazy
So it's a year later, is it still decent? Where's the follow-up video? I saw a bunch of other stuff where this stuff was peeling up like rubber off of the floor
I don't know if you'll see this comment, but just a thought ... I wonder if you could use a Behr paint stain (same color), to brush between the boards. Probably cheaper, goes a longer way because it's not as think, and it would probably have a better run down between the boards. Then roll the rest of the deck like you did with the Overdeck! I think it would All blend together. You might have to let the paint stain dry before rolling. Might work?
Used this on my deck and absolutely regret using it. With in a year is was peeling. Within two years it was coming off in small sheets. The only place that looked good was areas that didn't see extreme weather. I had to completely strip everything off all wood that it touched and went with a semi transparent oil based sealer stain. Time will tell if that is better. Buyer beware on this product.
How did you get rid of it? Parts of it are really stuck on my deck. put it on really thick with the textured roller. I tried stripper and it doesn't touch it. I tried sanding - that would take forever unless I rent a floor sander and I'm not skilled enough for that.
It’s a lot of work to remove but can be made easier if you use the right tools. Purchase a Makita 5 “ disk sander. Purchase a groups of disks. 24 grit and 36 grit and a few 50grit. You are only going to use it to rip off paint. Move along to the next spot as soon as you get to bare wood. You are not using the sander to sand the paint. The goal is for it to grab paint off the wood. My tip: Purchase an extension cord that has a dimmer on it. Use the dimmer to lower the rotation speed of the sander to a comfortable speed. This will help a lot to keep from damaging the bare wood and it helps each disk last a lot longer.
@@joanchantler2498 i just did mine today. i used paint stripper and a scraper tool , only 20% paints come off. power washing made 15% more paints come off. i was frustrated about to give up, then i decided to use a wire brush for last try. thank goodness i did it. the small wire brush works so much better than scraper tool. it’s power washing and wire brush repeatedly processing, 90 % paints came off at the end.
