    Wow! That computer, though relatively old, is still quite capable! Excellent find!

    CF (compact flash) is a memory card, usually for high end devices. They're still used. :)

    Edit: in norway at all Child schools we have school bands, and each half A year we have something called "loppemarked" were we sell all kinds of stuff. And once we got in a computer which was working, and with almost no personal files on it, but the previuos owner had managed to leave A cd in the cd-rom drive with personal pictures on it!!

    Our school districts still use some of the older versions of these BTX Gateway PCs, although the ones that they are using are the P4 HT 3.20 GHz systems. They are fast systems on Windows XP (I should rephrase, SCREAMERS) but are kinda sluggish on Windows 7, due to the fact that some of the idiots that work in our school district's tech department put x64 copies of Windows 7 on some of those machines with only 1 GB of memory. One of them is running a Dell install of Windows 7. But they aren't bad

    Blowing air directly across the CPU, BTX definately has an advantage on my Dell XPS 700, as it uses a Pentium D which produces a buttload of heat.

    I also can say around me no one throws them away. They now take them to Best Buy and get a $10 for each computer sometimes even more if it a newer . I found it about a few months ago. I took my old pile from 1990 well broken beyond repair . I also strip them for any good parts.

    No, it's not supposed to say "Media Center Edition." Only Home edition says it on the splash screen. Professional says it on the login screen.

    I do have that very same Gateway computer form factor and I am looking to get it going again for modern era however I am unfamiliar with what parts work what parts don't.

    Still have a Windows 98 hard rive from the first computer I ever used. My family still regularly uses an HP Pavilion a520n from 2004.

    It's weird how some Gateways of this era had the image in the recovery partition, and you had to create backup CDs, and other had the recovery image that you had to complete with the included CDs. I guess MCE was a bigger image than regular XP, although not really by that much. My 3522GZ had the full recovery image on the drive.

    I have this exact computer sitting next to my desk unused. The USB ports haven't worked since at least 2007 (not a driver issue, something is just borked to where USB doesn't work at all), and I suspect there are bad caps. I'm only keeping it around because there are lots of memories on that computer I don't want to let go. Maybe I'll try to fix it and get it back up and running one of these days.

    The later installs of Windows XP (after SP2) do not state the specific edition on startup.
    Also, I had a Gateway from around that era. Same config, too. But all the caps were blown. All of them. The motherboard was trashed.

    I agree with TheSoxmania: get that Bestec PSU out! But, at this point, try experimenting with Windows 8 on that PC for starters (to see if you like Windows 8). If not, it could theoretically be a great little internet browsing PC with Windows or Linux 64-Bit. My ideas

  • @TheSoxmania
    @TheSoxmania 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can beat that, used to have an MSI gaming rig with a geForce3 TI GPU and 512MB of RAM, well, the power supply I bought for this $900 (at the time) rig was a 450W Bestec PSU, I got it for $24.99 and after about 9 months, the standby rail went open circuit and lobbed 240 volts right through it, every little part of the system was fried, had to spend $700 on a low end rig. decided not to get another bestec PSU and went for a Delta 268.9W power supply which is still working now with no issues

  • @TheSoxmania
    @TheSoxmania 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    you might wanna change that psu, Bestec are known for bad standby rails that blow components out, due to the design, the standby rail fails after a few years and this causes a spike that ranfes from 12 to 24 volts, the original rail voltage, as you most certainly will know, having a strong knowledge on computers, is 5 volts, but even a cheap power supply is safer than that bestec that's currently in that system, in fact, 98 of mobo failures were due to those Power supplies!!

    I can remember I worked on a machine when I worked for NCR . They had the contract
    for Gateway and dell and there laptops. Back then a Gateway had some nice laptops. I had to keep a log of all those machine I worked on. For that machine it was the power supply and keyboard. I never seen the Belkin wireless n in those 2 I worked on ..
    They had a Gateway wireless G card .
    Give me the complete models and serial I still have the repair books and a lot of parts.

    yh, I replace the PSUs if they're bestec, especially the ATX250 series, My school has also done as I advised, all the old machines they had with that model PSU had a corsair 250W PSU installed, I had a stockpile of them that I sold off in bulk for somewhere in the reigion of £199.95 for 30 PSUs, Cheapest buy they had!!
