You can and should really buy ATX to AT power supply adapters and use modern power supply, I have 2 "older machines" a generic beige box Pentium 100 and also a Gateway P2-233. The P100 i dont really care , so if it blows no big deal. The gateway has little use and is in great condition, all caps are good, so i guess gateway did not use the sub standard caps at the time.
If the machine is valuable and you can use a generic supply then it is a smart thing to do

Hi All. Wow a great find, i actually have the model from the year before, G6 233, also with 100meg zip drive and 4meg nvideo Vanta card, usb x 2 and Ensoniq PCI sound card
I also have about @ 205 Gateway OEM install floppies so if you need anything i can check, btw i have 2 space 100 zip disks
The OEM floppy worked 2 times then jammed the metal slide door of a floppy and the disk drive is ruined, i have a generic one in the re but the eject button is different, so i just use a pencil to press the eject button.
The machine has been upgrade to a new internal 5 port usb2 PCI usb card ( get the one with NEC chip as uses stock win98 drives ) - As i had some trouble with lan cards, i use realtek usb ethernet adapter
Win98 mods was only the large usb drive patch , i can see 16g usb cards.
Machine works fine and is actually quiet.
Hard drive is by Compact flash adapter using a 4g card with 2 x 2G partitions, the second partition has cdrom images mainly for games
I do have a 3dfx 1 or 2 card to place, when i get around to it.
A hint on the painting from a panel beater friend, you seen to be spraying to much / heavy coat, while maybe not the best method, i tend to spray side to side with so fast short squirts, it never covers the item in full and takes about 5 or 6 swipes to cover, i was told many light coats is better than a heavy coat, allow about 20 to 30 seconds between each swipe for it to flash off. Try to spray in a corner so you dont get any wind or dust ( or loose paint spray ) , then move it into the sun to bake and dry off. When you mask if you want to keep the serial numbers logos etc, use plain paper or post it notes and cut it to almost the exact shape, then trims is back about 3 to 4 mm all the way around, now position in place, it should cover 99% of all the writing ( seldom does it go all the way to the edge, and now you can tape it down , as the paper protects the text it wont peel it of when you remove the tape.
    Regards
    George

hard drive rubber was implemented for noise suppression. not drop protection. I have over 50 of these still in a drawer. These hard drives are remarkably solid work horses. WD were in a huge mess at that year with most of their HDD failing. The ever only ones I have still working is a WD Bigfoot HDD at a measly 4 gigabytes (lost 400mb with CRC issues). but still works fine when the hard drive is limited to no scanning the error area (thankfully it was at the front area furtherest away from the platter.

painting over the rust and yellowing has not saved this pc... it will continue to both rust and yellow under the paint and worst of all the plastic that was yellow was not just a colour change, the process of yellowing also weakens the plastic meaning it will eventually be a rusty crumbled mess with paint on it. This is not a restoration you just cleaned it and painted it. shame.
