When you have all this mis-matched ram, does it run dual channel? I guess I would have bought 3 DDR3 X 4GB sticks, and sold or kept the 2 GB for spares.
I did something similar with my 2012 Gateway sx2380. I don't game, but I am getting into video editing with premiere pro and the upgrades helped big time.
I wanted to try out what a "used" price/performance build is. So I just bought myself a second hand I5-2500k on a Z68 mobo with 8Gb of ram for $90, overclocked the CPU to 4.5 Ghz. Coupled with a second hand GTX 970 i also bought for $80. Wow its very satisfying! I am gaming on 1080P high settings flawlessly on a budget of less than $300 (Casing brand new $25, PSU second hand a Seasonic SII 520w for $25, SSD 128Gb $20 and 1TB HDD for $30). I used back my old 24" LCD 60Hz monitor and logitech G102 and Dell membrane keyboard.

What a difference 3 years makes! My 10 year old Shuttle SG41J1 that I've been trying to modernize has presented some unique challenges. The original Celeron 2.5 GHz dual core was upgraded to a 3.0 GHZ Core 2 Quad, a nice boost! CPU cooling was another issue. The stock Celeron cooler could handle 65W, but the new CPU TDP was 95W. I found a Thermaltake cooler that did the job, but it was a DC (3 pin) fan and the mobo can only control PWM, so the new fan always runs at 2500 rpm (cool, but noisy). Finding a PWM fan for LGA775 AND fits mechanically with the mobo layout turned out to be not so easy. SSD upgrade - check! The SATA-II ports were good enough for a new 240 GB SSD, which boots Win10 20H2 in under 10 seconds! With only 3 SATA ports, the never-used optical drive was removed in favor of additional HDDs. So far, so good. Adding USB3 to the stock array of USB2 ports seemed in order. The problem is there's one PCIe slot and one PCI(!) slot. The PCIe is really there only for GFX (installing anything in PCIe disables the on-board graphics!). So the PCI slot is really the only option. I found one vendor that sold PCI USB3 cards, but sadly, no joy. The card would not work with the mobo. The last challenge was RAM... the mobo supports DDR2-800 and has 4GB installed in its 2 slots (not bad for 2010). It can support 8 GB, but 4GB DDR2 sticks that are not AMD are really hard to find without blowing the budget. Sigh. Without the extra DRAM, spending for a GFX upgrade was just out of the question, and the project has gone to the back burner. So, while I have a quite usable, moderately fast 10-year-old system, sadly it will never be a console-killer. I think it's time to build a new system...!
@@eepysilon dual core 3GHz? Is that a E8400? That was my rig for a long ass time too. If you ever want to upgrade for cheap, check if your motherboard is compatible with Xeons and then go look on ebay for a modded E5450 or X5450 (it has to be modded for the LGA775 socket). Then you do the BIOS update to get the extra Xeon instruction sets. You get a quad core at 3.0 GHz for really cheap, I got mine running with 8 gigs of RAM on Windows 7 and runs great.
You might be able to fit a 1080 TI in that thing if you get rid of the metal bracket system for the hard drives you can store an SSD above right beneath the CD drive 1080 TI is now around 280 to $300 and is around the power of a series x or higher and you really don't need Ray tracing as that features very minimal for gaming fidelity
Samll Problem, that PSU no way will support 1080 TI you think whats the problem i will change the PSU... Dell: man do you know what does it mean propietry connection? so no and by the way how you would kepp it cool? it has a one 80mm fan...

Cool man. I did something similar to my 6 year old HP Pavilion desktop which has served me well. I have 16gb of ram, a GTX1060 3gb card, and an i7-4790 pcu on the original motherboard. I'm going to start building a high end gaming computer next, just trying to figure out which parts I want to go for since I'll have to do it slowly because of money constraints. Also I have a 3rd gen core i3 and was wondering if it would slow the in game performance down(like fps) and if you think it might be able to stream somewhat smoothly.
My Dell XPS 410 is still kicking! Heck even my HP Pavilion 4450 still works! Intel Celeron 366 MHz. 64 MB RAM, 6GB hard drive, 32x CD-ROM drive, 4MB ATI Rage IIC graphics card.
Speaking of their IPC being so strong in earlier models, the 4690S was a particular little beast. The IPC they put on that refresh chip actually put it neck-and-neck with a factory clocked 4690K, while using less power and producing much less heat (albeit it WAS a locked chip). Paired with n H97 board, GTX 970, 16GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport, and a 500GB Samsung ssd, made for nearly instant win7 boot. I was very happy with that CPU when I built with it, and I've always been an AMD fangirl.

Thank you CEX for been an amazing chain of stores for anyone who loves anything electric, from PC,s, laptops, tablets, phones to earphones/Buds, etc. They have it all_*
With those parts, that's not much like a console killer. A solid state drive and a power supply replacement would be recommended to make it qualify for a console killer.
That's really interesting. I didn't think that the 570 would boost performance that much. I appreciate budget builds, and this hits that mark. Great job, kept it simple and informative.
Vs the Intel HD 4000, the 570 is a beast GPU. Back in 2012, the HD 4000 was shit and today it is virtually useless for gaming. I don't even think it supports DX11 games let alone 12. The 570 by comparison to 2012 GPUs would have been one of the best single GPU cards out right up there with the OG Titan.
I'm finally "upgrading" my 12 year old PC. I had a pre built Dell desktop (Dual core Athlon 64 X2) that I maxed out with upgrades its mobo could support. Although, the PC still runs well, I'm constantly running out of memory for my applications. My new build is based on a nearly 4 year old platform though (Skylake). With mostly used parts, but the price was good.
Speak for yourself. If I see that it is a Lyle video I just don't watch it these days. I understand he's meant to be an irritating character but I just don't find anything funny about it.
@Bitwit i added gtx 980, had to remove hdd cages, but not using it anyway. sata ports on motherbord is overlaped by gpu, and on 1 cornered connector can be connected, i using it for 1tb 960 evo ssd
Didn't hear it mentioned, or see in the transcript incase I missed it, that there are also adapters that can be used for installing a solid state drive into a hard drive bay. My acrylic case only has 5.25" drive bays, so I had to go even further, and start with adapters just to install a hard drive. Until this coming weekend, when I move everything into their new chassis, I have an adapter for an SSD, connected to an adapter for an HDD, installed in a 5.25" drive bay.
Hey a little tip to first time viewers of PC tech content, I would strongly recommend replacing the power supply (PSU) for something better in this system if possible. The last thing you want is to spend all of this money just for it to be for naught because your PSU went bad and took things with it. Also look into changing the CPU cooler to something like a noctua nh-l9i or nh-l9x65 both should fit in this case and offer better airflow and better acoustics for about $40-$50. You could probably find cheaper ones but those just come in mind for that CPU cooler height clearance. The reason why he didn't mention these upgrades is because it makes waste from tossing the PSU and CPU cooler. Those upgrades would add about $100-$115.
It makes no sense from a budget perspective to do any of those things you mentioned unless they pose a risk or issue which in this case they're not even close to being. The CPU was running anywhere from 50-60C under full load which is already very, very cool. On Ivy Bridge CPUs anywhere up to about 85C under max load is fine for 24/7 use. If the fans were a bit loud he has plenty of temperature headroom to quiet them down using BIOS settings or SpeedFan while keeping temps cool, so there is absolutely zero reason to waste money on an expensive Noctua cooler. Regarding the power supply he has a 120W model of the RX 570 and an Ivy Bridge Core i5 system only pulls a maximum of 90-100W by itself. Therefore, worst case scenario power consumption for this rig is 220W, well below the maximum rated 350W of the power supply. Again, no need to change. If it were a 250W unit though, only then would an upgrade be definitely needed as running low-end units at or very close to their max rated capacity continuously does cause them to fail prematurely.
Guys, If his GPU was running near 100% then he didn't have a CPU bottleneck in those situations. Therefore Dual Channel would not have helped those situations at all. I have no doubt there are situations where something like a 2133MHz kit in Dual Channel would give results of up to 20% higher but again for the situations in the video it's a non-issue.
@@photonboy999 Even if the GPU was running at 100% it still would of increased the performance considerably, it helps with the FPS dips and keeps the game play much smoother having that extra bandwidth
You can run 3 Modules in dual-channel, if (for example) channel A has 2x4gb and channel B has 1x8GB. Need more information? -> wikipedia "dual channel" ;-)

Only Paid $200 for just the 870,8gb ddr3 ram, 1 ssd, a gtx 1050 along with the case and whatnot, back in like 2017. Then spent about $200 on upgrades over the 4 years to what it is now.
I will note though, that trying to build a rig like this nowadays may be very difficult thanks to scalpers and the like. Finding a gtx 1060 now ( used and new) for a good price is tough, even my 580 is apparently worth $279 brand new now at best buy even though i legit paid $75 for it less than a year ago..... that should probably give you an idea on how bad the market is right now thanks to the low supply/scalpers/miners ruining everything for all of us. I got very very lucky when i decided to build my 2nd rig a few months ago with a ryzen 3600/rx 580, 2 ssd and 16gb ram for $300. Had i waited alittle longer.... would have spent $300 on just the cpu and motherboard combo alone. Man hopefully prices come back down soon.

So I got a new SSD online, a 2nd hand i5 3440. Cloned my HDD using the free version of EASEUS & use my SSD as C drive, with all my library directed to E: HDD. Spent $55 overall & my beautiful little workhorse is better than new. This was my first time using an SSD. I really taught it was too good to be true but now we can buy a 240GB Toshiba SSD for $30 with a warranty, I had to try it. OMG, ITS LIKE USING A NEW PC. I love it. Thank you CEX for been an amazing chain of stores for anyone who loves anything electric, from PC,s, laptops, tablets, phones to earphones/Buds, etc. They have it all_*
I've got one of those for my secondary rig, I put my old 1070 in it.
Wow
"so I don't have RAM anxiety" loool
You're only missing one thing : Linux
Great video as always Kyle!
Hey, I'm getting an upgrade in RAM! tomorrow I will edit it if I get it in successfully
Edit after RAM replacement: It worked!
Nice. Would brand, type (like DDR4), capacity, and speed?
We want more lyle!! Solid video
Speak for yourself. If I see that it is a Lyle video I just don't watch it these days. I understand he's meant to be an irritating character but I just don't find anything funny about it.
Cool. Then giiiit. Gooowaaaan
Since my ps4 Was 7 years old. Mama told me get yourself a gaming PC
What the fuck
what
How about dual channel memory?
Yeah, different sized slots mean you drop down to single channel.
Screw running at the slowest speed, not balancing it halves your speed
Exactly. I was really confused that he did not mention dual channel, because those different sticks won't give you good results
Guys,
If his GPU was running near 100% then he didn't have a CPU bottleneck in those situations.
Man 2 years makes a difference
Any shirt that takes a piss outta the Verge PC build guide is fine by me. Cant wait to rock that out!!
9:20 But the SSD is not even plug-in in that shot... #consistency

You should've printed a swiss army knife that hopefully has a screwdriver in it instead of an actual screwdriver. xD
Hey, My brother built a new pc, he used his old pc’s case (it is so good) and the psu, the other parts are all there, and the thing is it can run warzone in 130fps! But I don’t have a case or a psu, i am 13y/o and i already know that my parents would not let me buy that :/
Reality is cruel. His old pc is so good, i had wished that he builds a nee pc with all nee specs.
:(
Do you have the money to buy a case and psu?
TBH, as you have used an SSD, there is spare space for a cooling fan assembly that can sit in a HDD bay and generate a bit more airflow.
Sometimes u can get older but lightly used parts for cheap and get not only a good performing but also good looking system.
