+Mic. the Vegan FALSE....I'm "Paleo" and I don't hate your channel. your presentation is thoughtful, concise, properly laced with facts and sources. you have the best and most likeable vegan channel I've watched thus far. I couldn't make it through Cowspiricy but your short video on it showed me the facts I was hoping they would give. also, I put paleo in quotes, because even the biggest Mark Sisson fanboy should admit that anyone iving in the 21st century is hardly paleo. People like you and I can disagree about oour diets without being disagreeable.
watched two more videos. I subbed. I think you have a lot of great information to share with people, and you have good charisma, which makes listening to you enjoyable. Thank you again for having concise facts that are easy to digest. somebody alert the New York Times, I found a Vegan I like, who isn't a superb asshole to people that never had the time/energy/desire/history to fully understand vegetarianism/vegans and can deliver facts without having a superiority complex over us meat eaters. you've piqued my interest into a more plant-based diet (im about 80-90% now) and maybe even serve my kids only a plant-based diet, and see if there are marked improvements in behavior/health.
One thing that is crazily dumb with the Paleo diet is that advocate oils.....clearly the one thing that is guaranteed to have not been available in Paleolithic times is seed oils to fry things with. A lot of vegans tend to consume seed oils so you're certainly one of the smarter ones since you keep away from them.
Thank you for mentioning the Kitavan people!! They get overlooked a lot when discussing paleo-style diets. Ancient peoples have always had extremely varying diet depending on where they lived, so I really dislike the term "paleo diet" as if there was only one type. Personally I've been living on a Kitavan style diet minus fish for a while now and I really enjoy it. I get to live on my favorite food (sweet potatos and other underground starches) with whatever greens and fruit I want, with coconut cream or coconut meat. No grains personally because I'm testing to see if my acne problems are related to that. I'm going to share this video with somebody I know who is into "caveman" style dieting. And I subbed too!
Maybe try increasing magnesium (Epsom salt bath, leafy greens, nuts) + potassium (leafy greens, nuts, avocado, potatoes). Also to improve absorption of magnesium, selenium (Brazil nuts), vitamin D (sun + magnesium), vitamin B6 (tofu, banana). Magnesium is a good detoxifier.
coffee is a key accepted component of the modern carb deficient paleo diet . don't think they had access or need of 100-300mg's of daily caffein way back in the day. livin' off animal fat and caffein makes hangy paleo crew
dude I'm so sick of seeing videos why I went paleo after vegan as if vegan was ONLY a diet I guess they decided to buy leather again? idiots! LOVED THIS VIDEO!
I would say people of the paleolithic had an omnivorous diet than a vegan one. Humans eat can any source of food depending on the environment, in places like the tundra they ate some plants, but probably ate manly meat they got from the animals they hunted due to the cold making edible plants sparse. These days it's easy to eat a meat free diet, but during the ice ages that would not have been a good one to survive on.
Always love watching your videos. They're really informative, straight to the facts no fluff. I'll be showing my family members quite a few videos as they try to follow more of a paleo lifestyle with meat.
What are your thoughts on the phytic acid content of certain grains doing damage during digestion?? I have been practicing a paleo version of veganism ('sides potatoes) since having a bad episode with unsoaked beans! Super glad to have found your channel
Awesome you found something that works for you :) Have you tried teff grain? It's actually a seed that has an awesome nutrient profile. I soak it in vinegar water overnight first.
Why reverse to paleo and not to fruitarianism, like we eat for 20m years as primates in tropics? Fruit doesn't sell like "Butter & bacon miracle diet" eh?
Yeah..the real Paleo are Fruitarians. Maybe not 20, but 2 mil years... which still is much more time than the 30.000 years or so, that we got the bad habit to eat meat, and animal products.
Hi Mike, as a vegan I'm pleased to see these results, yet I do wonder: does Cronometer take bioavailability into account? For example, vitamin A has to be synthesized from carotenoids since it is not present in a vegan diet, and the absorption of minerals like iron and calcium can be inhibited (by oxalic acid I believe?), and are lower than in animal products in the first place. Could you please elaborate on this? Thanks!
I have been sceptical the first time I heard about Palaeolithic diet being what it is, I mean, avoiding grains and legumes? Seemed like an unbalanced diet to me. I believe people in the past, I mean far in the past, were more connected and in tune with nature and their body than we ever did in this overly "civilized" society.
...... who here has actually taken courses on the history of human subsitence? Because you know some of us have and call bullshit on all this. Like our first agricultural innovation was an accident because of gatherers picking the tops off of precursors of what is now wheat..... oo and they did that while they hunted animals... because it was storeable and doesn't break down as easily.... but you know.. vegan facts apperently trump all that because you are "more ethical" then i am
I'm not sure what you're arguing here? Is it that modern paleo diets faithfully recreate the diet of paleolithic man? If so, then by your own account the paleo diet should include consumption of einkorn. And doubtless you will also know that insects were also part of the diet, so they should be on the menu as well. However, I haven't seen many paleo promoters actually advocating for any of these, which as someone who has taken courses on the history of human subsistence, must really irritate you.
Purgatori Sakkara well no, not even advocating paleo, but Mic's says his diet is more paleo.... i am saying that unless you lived then you really can't say its a Paleo diet. And most of those vegtables, legumes, mushrooms and fruits that many vegans eat..... potatoes, sweet potatoes, many different kinds of beans, peppers, corn.... all originate in central America, because of agriculture..... unless you only eat things that you hunt or pick yourself..... cant really saying anything is more paleo..... unless you only eat wild game. Then they could call that Paleo. I like to look at facts as opposed to using confirmation biased data.
Well that's exactly the point made by a lot of us who criticise the paleo diet: even if we knew exactly what it consisted of, it'd be largely impractical---if not impossible---to recreate. And, even if we *could* recreate it, it's not clear that there would be any point in doing so as far as promoting better health and so on. Even the 'wild game' thing is a bit misleading; paleo man most definitely ate wild game, but it seems fairly unlikely that it was a staple of their diet (see here, for instance: www.nationalgeographic.com/foodfeatures/evolution-of-diet/ ).
Man that is so cool, I mean, in most of the world, you are baned from hunting with anything that is not a rifle... Do not get me wrong, I do like to shoot guns and so, but hunting with what is in all respects a sniper rifle is not that different to popping targets at a shooting range. Hell, I would love to go on a hunt with a bow, or a spear, but well, stupid laws in the EU...
It is not that you could not get a bow, hell, you could buy a bow with a poundage most people would not be able to draw, but for a reason beyond me, it is ilegal to use it for hunting...
Interesting. How do you get your good fats if you don't use oil? I'm in transition and hope to reach the goal of vegan but eating low grains, carbs mostly from vegetables.
I know you are saying that oil free is healthier, and I know that we wouldn't naturally eat oil, but do I need the nutrients to develop in early secondary school or will I be fine without them and just eating avocado?
You can do vegan keto, vegan paleo, vegan vegan, or vegan fast food. You should do a comparison with other types of vegan diets like raw vegan and fruitarian, and any others I haven’t mentioned.
whos diet were you comparing? you're obviously tracking and making sure you get ideal micros, was the paleo diet you got this from doing the same level of thought?
hi I am iron deficient. what vegan foods should I eat in order to avoid depreciating my health in that respect? also, how often should I eat that "said" food? thnx
pats cookie i personally eat 2-3 servings of legumes and pulses each day (lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, etc), 3 or so servings of dark green veg (spinach, kale, etc) and 2 servings if nuts or seeds per day ( i always have flax seeds each day). I also eat whole grains and a variety of other fruit and veg. The tends to put me at about 200-300% on the RDA for iron. A great way to get iron would be having cane molasses, or blackstrap molasses if you can stand the taste of it! These are great alternatives to iron supplements (1 tablespoon has around 100% of iron rda) as they contain a variety of minerals and vitamins. Of course i am not a health practitioner, but I suggest trying to up your consumption of these sorts of foods to see if it helps, before looking into taking iron supplements. But please listen to your doctor if they are telling you to supplement iron :)
william berthold yes this is very important! Consuming vitamin C with plant foods that contain iron can make the iron more absorbable than heam iron (the iron found in meat)
You are telling me that: genetic made vegtables and fruits, Grain(Aka: Venom), Tofu, Beans, peas, vegan milk is all paleo? If not then what should you eat?
where can i get the list of the cave man nutrition. is there a good page where it shows the calorie, fat protein and carb intake ofe different past populace
I disagree with your presentation on one point. That is, paleolithic humans regularly went into ketosis; however, not for the same reasons as someone on the paleo diet. Paleolithic humans experienced prolonged periods of fasting when food was scarce.
It looks like an Indian ham pattern was printed on some heavy weight paper and then cut into leaf like shapes. Perhaps string was affixed for hanging? Pretty cool!
Wow, 97 grams of fiber... i thought the ideal was around 30. Is there a such thing as too much fiber? If not i have to put more fiber in my diet pronto
+Mending Wall Yeah I go hard...without trying to. Recommended minimum amount is 25g/day for women and 38 for men. The Institute of Medicine says a healthy person who consumes a higher than suggested amount of fiber will not suffer "deleterious effects."
What did you eat to reach these numbers? Plant food is not bioavailable to us as animal products so something might contain particular nutrient but you wont be able to absorb it.
The 45-50% carbs and over 100g of fiber might be possible because wild species of fruits and greens have a lot less sugar, more protein and more fiber.
Nobody seems to really follow the original paleo diet (including Cordain). Now it's mostly low carb whatever you feel like is paleo - meat, butter and lots of oils with a few greens. That being said, I think the paleo people are exaggerating some numbers. No way low carbers are getting over 200 mg of vit C. And 31 grams of fiber? From where! Maybe 15 if they're lucky. Absolutely no way 4,700 mg of potassium! Again, maybe 1000. Great vid, thanks for sharing.
notvto mention that a true paleo diet would have none of the banans, watermelon, broccoli, kale ... we have selectevly bred for cosumption and that their meat sources were mostly deer, wild goats and rabbits not grass-fed cows that were bred to be bigger and have more meat
Olive oil is pure monunsaturated fat, and has been better studied than one study examinating 10 people (the one linked), and more recently. I'm not a dogmatic person but when you have over 10 studies examinating olive oil as a coronary and vascular protector against one or two that say the opposite... i'll keep using olive oil until the major recent evidence supports the opposite.
Wrong. Most oils are polyunsaturated or monounsaturated. Saturated fat comes from animals and is referred to as "fat" not "oil." Oils (and fat) help to transfer certain vitamins and minerals through your intestinal walls into your bloodstream. They are important adjuncts to your diet. Fruits and vegs tend to be relatively low in fats or oils but they still have them. Grains and nuts are better richer sources and when eaten with fruits and vegs will speed those nutrients into your system. Processed oils will not hurt you if you use them moderately, although people with allergies to nuts or grains may wish to avoid using vegetable, canola, corn or peanut oils. Olive oil is a very good oil for most people. I can't tolerate coconut oil so I don't know how that might rate for others. Again, moderation is the watch word.Incidentally, our ancestors likely ate meat with vegetables so had plenty of fatty acids to transfer fat-soluble nutrients before they had processed oils and when grains and nuts were seasonally unavailable.
I have a question for anyone to answer: I know a guy who is paleo and he keeps saying he knows the vegan diet isn't healthy (from science and his background in biology studies). He says most vegans feel sick after 5 years because all their old vitamins and nutrients are deplenished . He says vegans can barely get K2 and Omega 3 vitamins, blah blah blah. I'm strongly vegan, but I feel like I can't fight back with facts or opinions to support being vegan (I do not have a science background). Besides animal cruelty, I want to know how to respond to him about just how the diet is good for you (if you still eat right of course) but I just feel like he judges me for being vegan. Please help! some add on: in your video how you saw we can get everything we need from plants, the paleo guy doesnt agree. And i don't think he is worried I would get enough protein, he is worries about vitamins and nutrients like DHA/EPA omega 3s, and k2.
How can you eat 97g of fiber per day? Seriously!! A 100gm serving of any vegan food like nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies, legumes and even grains has 5-10gm of fiber. So do you seriously eat 1-2 kg of foods in a day?
How about Paleolithic-Vegan, with no animal products? No Neolithic foods like grains, beans, squashes. Only fruits, Paleolithic vegetables, nuts, seeds. No meat, dairy. I adhere to this, and I usually feel tremendous. It is important to get a very good Vitamin B12 supplement, though.
this was wonderful. just to add to this, we ate grains, veggies, etc and that sound be obvious because we developed agriculture during the Neolithic era which we grew the foods we ate the most. as far as meat goes we really only raised animals to help with harvest, trade, etc. It was too time consuming to raise meat. there is evidence that Egyptians ate a mainly vegetarian diet but could have had meat every once in awhile. and this is from studying the bones of pharaohs, not slave or commoners. the Pharaohs were mummified scientists could easily study them. if we truly look back during the dawn of agriculture it's evident that animals were just mainly used as a tool and every once in awhile used for food. in the Americas the Olmec used llamas for their wool but also learned to grow cotton for clothes. the Inuit are the only ones I can think of that used meat solely and they don't have the greatest health
Meghan Rood yes! I've read that ancient Egyptians actually ate mostly bread made using grain and water, and lots of different vegetables with some fruit and some fish .. basically no meat there! and yeah I don't know where the idea came from that we only started eating grains during the neolithic era... agriculture began when people learned that they could plant food that they liked and have been eating before to selectively breed them to be larger or taste better
I read a stupid webpage by a paleo dude who kept talking about "eating like a predator" and "thinking and acting like predator" or whatever and it was laaaaaameee.
Maybe too many grains saps my energy. You should try "Dr. Gregers Daily dozen App' from your app store it is free. And is the best version of a Vegan Diet I have found.
The problem with this is that we are not palaeolithic humans, we are mesolithic/neolithic humans, also these humans from the latter period if the stone age made bread for barley and ate legumes, (I wrote this comment before actually finishing the video :p) also just to clarify, the humans from the palaeolithic period were a different species of human to homo sapiens.
You sort of mislead people by using your own diet when showing the omega 6 to 3 ratio. I don't disagree that a vegan diet can do this. It's just not entirely intuitive to many new people pick up veganism for the 1st time as to how this is done. Dr. Gregor did a video on a vegan at 40 getting a heart attack, that goes into greater detail on what changes in diet reduce omega 6 and increase omega 3.
+xenoblad That's why I named the video why "my vegan diet" etc. I think that if you eat whole plant foods it's pretty natural to get a better omega ratio. I in no way engineered my diet to have a better omega ratio, it just happened why I cut out oil. I do agree that a standard American vegan will not get these number. Especially the fiber numbers.
"and we tied on iron, which is IRONic"
nice
Terry H. Hahaha
And incorrect. Plant iron is nowhere near as bioavailable as heme iron.

is there a good page where it shows the calorie, fat protein and carb intake ofe different past populace
That shifts drastically based on the regions theses early ancestors lived in.
I disagree with your presentation on one point. That is, paleolithic humans regularly went into ketosis; however, not for the same reasons as someone on the paleo diet. Paleolithic humans experienced prolonged periods of fasting when food was scarce.
your vids are insanely good.
What do you know the reference links don’t work so you can’t actually verify any of the numbers he’s claiming are accurate.
10k potassium what’s the safe limits on that? Because I love bananas and beans.
The vegan LDL study link is wrong, this is the actual study fyi www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17364116
What about mineral blocking phytic acid?
NO PEANUTS?!?! HOW DO THEY LIVE WITHOUT PEANUT BUTTER?!?!?!
Meiby they did eat nuts and tender veggies and ofc fruits flowers seeds grains leafes and greens
Why does the paleo diet say legumes and wheat are toxic?
Pretty sure I've heard that initial background music played at the Scene parties I went to years ago... lol
How do you get so much potassium? I struggle to hit 5000.
What diet actually makes up those values for the true Paleos?
What are your thoughts on B12 or B complex?
Nice run down :) been wondering about this! New subscriber here!
It looks like an Indian ham pattern was printed on some heavy weight paper and then cut into leaf like shapes. Perhaps string was affixed for hanging? Pretty cool!
+audiovisuality Yeah it's actually on thick fabric. The leaves are pierced with twine and they are all hanging from a branch :)
What program do you use to track your nutrition?? Just wondering
Great Content! Great comparison!
This Channel is fabu!! Can u plz make videos about foods high in vitamin A, B, C and D plz. Cheers Mate ;)
Favourite Channel 👍🏻
Hunting wild animals was a very difficult challenge in paleolithic times, so those diets had to be low in meat.
What did he use to keep track?
Olive oil is bad ? The mediterranean diet is full of it. Salt is bad ? The average korean daily intake is 12g per capita.
This is not really surprising as even today most hunter gather societies rarely eat meat and get most of their food from the plants gathered.
How do you get 90grams + of fiber in a day?
How did they get so much calcium?
kirmöööl greens, almonds, figs oranges, oats, dates fortified foods, beans and seeds, blackstrap molasses, generally eating enough, tofu, tempeh, lentils
they showed a steak ad before the video, ugh... how dare they?
How the hell does anyone have any idea on what a paleo ate?? Or even how long would live for
Bones and poo
notvto mention that a true paleo diet would have none of the banans, watermelon, broccoli, kale ... we have selectevly bred for cosumption and that their meat sources were mostly deer, wild goats and rabbits not grass-fed cows that were bred to be bigger and have more meat
Whats the problem with oils anyway?
they are pure saturated fats. heating and eating them increases LDL which causes arthrosclorosis (not as bad as meat or eggs though)
Olive oil is pure monunsaturated fat, and has been better studied than one study examinating 10 people (the one linked), and more recently. I'm not a dogmatic person but when you have over 10 studies examinating olive oil as a coronary and vascular protector against one or two that say the opposite... i'll keep using olive oil until the major recent evidence supports the opposite.
without fiber it has a negative effect of blood flow and artery function
Iker Claire watch 'olive oil and arterial function' by nutritionfacts.org
Again, moderation is the watch word.Incidentally, our ancestors likely ate meat with vegetables so had plenty of fatty acids to transfer fat-soluble nutrients before they had processed oils and when grains and nuts were seasonally unavailable.
hahah awesome
the beard is paleo
LOL!
hahahahah!
It is important to get a very good Vitamin B12 supplement, though.
good job, bro. keep it up.
wow, how did you get 48mg of Zinc
this was wonderful. just to add to this, we ate grains, veggies, etc and that sound be obvious because we developed agriculture during the Neolithic era which we grew the foods we ate the most. as far as meat goes we really only raised animals to help with harvest, trade, etc.
Thank you for making this video!!!!!
I read a stupid webpage by a paleo dude who kept talking about "eating like a predator" and "thinking and acting like predator" or whatever and it was laaaaaameee.
Excellent job
How come I have zero energy on my vegan diet?
Maybe too many grains saps my energy.
You should try "Dr. Gregers Daily dozen App' from your app store it is free.
And is the best version of a Vegan Diet I have found.
why is it sodium so high?!
I think you're right.
Great video.
Oversimplify everything and then you can always believe your right without ever having to know
The problem with this is that we are not palaeolithic humans, we are mesolithic/neolithic humans, also these humans from the latter period if the stone age made bread for barley and ate legumes, (I wrote this comment before actually finishing the video :p) also just to clarify, the humans from the palaeolithic period were a different species of human to homo sapiens.
Plus research has actually shown our ancestors ate way more plant foods than animals
Starches are bad for teeth?
