This was so well done, Mic, and thank you for the mention! Navigating recovery and the natural restrictions of veganism/a whole plant food diet isn't always straight forward. ♥️ Also: You look great 🤣
It's one of the things that has persuaded me to give vegan food a chance. my family have been vegan for about a month now and I can't believe how much healthier we are all feeling. It's mostly thanks to the logic and rational explanations from Mic and others that helped me see through the rubbish that the meat/dairy industries put out there. Thanks to all of you for being so practical :)
A very sweet reply; I also think Mic should be commended for all the research he does and his organized presentations, which actually is not the norm in any vlog, vegan or not, on any subject in fact.
With the everage adult being overweight nowadays ppl just don't know anymore what a normal weight looks like. I'm constantly being told I need to eat more and my BMI is around 21-22
@@mairimka8757 yeah I have pretty fair skin as well and can't really tan either but I get freckles in summer which helps. So I usually just get the "you look sick" in winter
mairimka lol me too. My Mum told me I looked pale and ill the other day. I reminded her that as a pre-teen/teenager, I was pale due to severe anaemia and very thin, when she was feeding me meat and dairy every day. I’m not anaemic any more, but I’m still pale as a ghost because I burn horribly in the sun and load up on sunscreen every day 😎

thank you so much for mentioning the factor about eating disorders, i really needed to hear that. as a 15 year-old vegan who has been struggling with anorexia since i was 11, avoiding oils was not beneficial to me. i ended up in another restrictive pattern and i accidentally lost weight (which is not good at all, since i'm already skinny). i still prefer to choose whole foods for the most part, but i'm no longer afraid to eat the meals that my mom cooks for me, which always tend to have oil in them.
That's wonderful to hear. I recently started including more fat in my diet as well, mostly from peanut butter. I am thin too and have had issues when I would eat mostly whole foods with gaining weight.
I second that. Like you said, I needed to hear this. I finished my college swimming career one year ago. During training I was putting down almost 4500 calories per day, but I was remaining 19% BMI. After a year of having drastically lower appetite, I have dropped below 17. Incorporating more coconut olive and/or avocado can really help me eat a higher volume. My body is still accustomed to metabolizing 3000+ calories per day, but my intake has dropped because I’m not swimming 5 miles per day anymore (not an exaggeration). So thank you to Mic for putting this video out.
I experience the same, that is why I use avocado or walnut oil in my salads or veggies. Also I do no longer reject food cooked by my mom nor am I afraid and unable to go to a restaurant.
@TheMatron'sMilitia Vegan flexitarian? That's not vegan, vegan is absolute avoiding eating, drinking, using and exploiting animals, but it's not necessarily not wearing wool, it's simply not wearing things from dead animals, note, blood is not vegan even if the animal is alive because it's exploitation of animals. Vegan is defined as: a strict vegetarian who doesn't eat, drink, use, or wear or go to entertainments of animal cruelty and animal exploitation, especially from dead animals. Honey is vegan, but in reality it's quasi-vegan because it's beegan.
@TheMatron'sMilitia They're also part of a subkingdom that includes all animals except for sponges. Bees are insects, so what? I love insects, I don't use anything from an exploited or dead bee, therefore beeganism is veganism with a future for bee farmers, rather than veganism with heart. I'll be vegan my way, you you be vegan your way, and furthermore ", as far as is possible and practicable", not no matter what, therefore I'm going as far as I can go to avoid exploitation and cruelty to animals. You're not telling me the truth with your thoughts, you're just telling me the truth of the textbook definition, you're not the definition and you know you're outveganing other vegans.
How does a pun on the concept of having some plant oil in your vegan diet turn into a darn scrap about honey between vegan fanatics!? Seriously! This is exactly the type of play school sandpit fighting that puts meat eaters off of even thinking of going vegan! “Militia” is exactly why others so many people say they don’t want to know - because they don’t want to be interrogated by the vegan police!
I have a red bearded blue eyed fair complected vegan son, you both look great, healthy. My husband and I are 60, we've been Whole Food plant-based (vegan) for over 2 years. Mic, you are one of my go-to guys to learn, just like Gregor, McDougall, Clapper , Davis, Kahn, Barnard..... keep up the good work you are greatly appreciated!!!
So. I just got home from grocery shopping and after looking at the olive oil wall for a good 15mins, I remembered your vid on oil and I didn't buy oil. Does that mean I don't consume oil? No. Because there are oils in every other food when I go out. But that's my new motto: doing something good imperfectly but sustainably. Btw, super happy about you tiny house build! I'm getting closer to building my own. It makes me excited seeing your progress!
My mentality is "it's NOT meat and dairy, I NEVER went vegan for my health, and there's no greater torture than cold toast with no butter. You can pry my vegan butter from my cholesterol consumed corpse"
Yes! Eating oil has been essential in my ED recovery. I’m not recovered enough to know if I exclude it because of a ED- thought or not and there’s way more feelings involved in it to not eat it. And also please remember you can be sick (sick enough!!!) on an ok BMI too! Thanks for mentioning EDs☺️
Great vid as always! I took the oil free route when I first went vegan but found that it felt really restrictive to me and took a lot of the joy out of eating. Now I use a little olive oil here and there, although my oil consumption is still relatively low, and I’ve been much happier. at least for now, as a relatively healthy 20 year old, i think it’s more important to focus on a healthy relationship with food than being fully oil free, and I think maybe this is true for others too
Tiny 🏠 is looking good Mic, as are you. As far as healthy BMI goes: I pulled myself under the obesity line just by going Vegan, then into the normal range just lifting weights & avoiding Oil!
Yeah, that vegan deterioration video about you is ridiculous. Maybe she honestly doesn’t know about cameras, lighting, editing etc... but it was so clear that it was your different set up that caused you to look different then the natural lighting video. That whole channel is a mess as it’s so easy to see that she is sooooo very wrong 🤦♀️
Sandra O. Yeah I don’t think she does and ironically Vegetable Police just made a video going through the lighting and he featured her video about me. Her comment section is amazing too. People accusing me of having fake teeth and shit. Got your message too, thanks.
@@MictheVegan ....It's the same old story MIC....nice job with this as usual and I'll say the same thing I said with your last oil video....All you have to do is look at your labs and titrate your nutrition accordingly....I've been a nurse for almost 30 years and worked in wellness for most of that....well that was after working in the ER and ICU and taking care of post-op open heart surgery patients....almost all of which was preventable....I did my ICU clinical at The Cleveland Clinic while I was in nursing school at KSU, and also worked in the ICU there after graduating....Dr. Esselstyn did his research there and changed things forever....this is why The Clinic started their wellness program and why so may companies have them now....people think they know things....most do not....I know because this is what I do every single day...and the more companies that have wellness programs the more people will learn about what really effects health and prevention of metabolic disease........it is absolutely amazing what doctors tell their patients and i am glad I am there to help them because so many of them desperately want help and do no know where to turn....my son and I started a channel to help the employees out that I work with and they love it....we have a dachshund just like you did and she stars in many of our videos hahaha....you are helping people understand their nutrition better everyday and keep up the good work as the world needs more people like you....thanks for the inspiration!!!! I regularly report that channel as misleading information. Thenowner looks as if she need to address her own health issues. Her arms like like ham hocks.
I am so glad you brought up eating disorders. I’ve been struggling with anorexia for a year & have lost my period in the process. Also struggled a bit with orthorexia, to the point where eating out with other people gives me major anxiety. Although whole food plant based has definitely helped me heal & have less fears around eating food.
Thanks for this video! I am pro-oil precisely for this reason. As someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia and plenty of food-fear over the years, an important part of getting better was realizing that, for me, the risks of oil were always an excuse to avoid putting in "unnecessary" calories. But I wouldn't replace those calories with other healthy foods; I'd go without, hoping that I might lose even more weight. Another thing a person with an eating disorder might do is use the argument that "BMI is not an indicator of health" in order to justify a dangerously low weight. While BMI certainly isn't the whole picture, I appreciate you addressing that, and I appreciate you tossing the numbers up on the screen. And while the number of folks with an eating disorder are low, thank goodness, I would argue that MANY people have a disordered relationship with food, and this video is for those people, too. As you said, this is a level-headed take on the subject. Thanks again.
Oh man. I saw that you were on that vegan deterioration video and they were really reaching. You look good bro 👌 💚 I appreciate all work you put into your vids.
@French blue8 Yeah, sv3rige is racist, homophobic, pro murder, pro rape, cannibalism, animal killing, etc. Plus he stabbed 4 kids from his school which he denies but it was reported in the media.
@French blue8 It's called 'vegan deterioration'. They never focus on vegans who are clearly thriving, or they selectively pick photos that make people look bad. It's all about looks.
It's crazy because I wanted to write you about the topic of eating disorders with oil but was too afraid to. I became a vegan as a way to restrict when my eating disorder was at its worst, but it ended up saving my life. I now am comfortable with eating oil (I'm at a healthy weight) and don't feel bad about it. I know moderation is important for everything but enjoying yourself is also important. Thank you Mic. ❤
Aloha Mic! You did an excellent job with the eating disorder issue. (I was a nutritionist at both a residential and IOP eating disorder centers here in Hawaii for 12 years.) When refeeding anorexics it' the priority to get calories without stretch and fullness which with teeny tiny stomachs fat and sugar fit the bill. This is refeeding not a way of life :) Mahalo for all you do!
I thought so too. But if you compare his old photos. Current mic has definitely lost color in his face. I was in denial at first but every video shows it clearly
Yeah, I never add oil to any food I make, nor do I cook with it. I'm one of those Ornish/Esselstyn types who simply has to avoid oils, and I'm vey happy with that, don't miss it at all. I vey occasionally eat food with oil if I'm at a restaurant, once in a blue moon, but even there I try to avoid it. That being said, for folks who are just going vegan and adjusting to it, I wouldn't advise worrying about oil right away - just get accustomed to the basics and work on un-refining things (removing refined foods) later.
I just cook with a bit of water or vegetable broth rather than oil. I do very, very, little frying anyway, just occasional light sauté. And for veggies, I'll often just microwave them - works very well, very tasty that way. Or I'll steam them, which also works great ( takes a little longer, and I'm lazy :). Simpler the better, for me.
@Taiwo Omotosho Been cooking with water for the last few days. It works, but it's easier for the food to stick to the pan. The challenge also is that a lot of foods have oil in them (vegan butter, vegan cheese, etc.).
This guy is amazing. I am ready to start cleaning up my diet but I know that my ED habits are still with me. Looking to reduce my oil use and intake but avoid restriction. It means a lot that Mic spoke about this, because its such a tricky issue but means a lot to so many of us who have struggled.
14 years vegan here and four kids later I'm... def at the "Whatever" level right now. I'm kind of in the weeds, in survival mode, day to day bc I'm so busy!
I hear that Maria. My kids definitely effect my diet in the way of snacking and sugar. Being a good mother is a tough job but someone's got to do it or we'll have a world full of jerks that think it's okay to shame women who have children. Keep up the good work ♡
I hear you, my wife and I always make sure our kids eat healthy, but will collapse on the couch with highly processed burgers and a bowl of fries on the couch every now and then.
Whole Plant Foods Genesis 1:29 thanks for saying this. I just got diagnosed with that plus diabetes so I’m definitely going to do no oil now (plus jump back on the plant based eating style)
I'm moving slowly but surely towards a whole food diet but I still occasionally buy mockmeats and use canola to fry things up a little. After I convinced my mom to quit dairy she started to make her own nut milk and after we blend and strain it we started using the clumpy bits from the strainer as an oil substitute. It actually works great because it's fatty and coats food really well
Excellent video and great to hear your personal views Mic the vegan on oils. I try not to cook without oils and I don't cook with oils daily but occasionally I will cook with oils and only buy it in small quantities and use it up then don't buy it for a few months.
This BMI Things is always worrying me. My whole life i was underweight (according to the BMI) as an omnivore, as a vegetarian and still as a vegan (I'm vegan for almost 10 years now). At the moment i weigh 53 kg and am 1,73 m tall, that makes an 17,7 BMI: underweight. I have no eating disorder whatsoever, never had. Mostly i am eating a whole food diet (because it feels good and i want to, not because i force myself), but do not restrict myself if i crave a cookie or something in the "unhealty sweets"-category. As an experiment i tried to stay away from oil completely (i still used it for cooking to that point) for two month or so. I lost 3kg (i was at 55kg) - i have no idea if the weight loss was because of the "oil-abstinence" or stress or something else. I actually didn't event notice, but as soon as i did (on a bathroom scale not the mirror) i added oil again. But it is and always was so hard for me to gain weight - almost impossible. I eat a normal amount of calories and even if i eat more than that...not gaining weight...i guess my body just burns it in seconds. I would't worry too much, because i am healty and feel fine, but this BMI-calculation is just so frustrating.
@@gSWG3R Yes, exactly. Even if there were some positive effects from cutting oil, I just wanted to say that for me it's overall acutally healthier to still use oil in moderation (as Mic said). But i think it's always interesting to try out adding or excluding certain things for a short period of time (and always with your health in mind!), because you can learn so much about your body. I think with our industrial, processed food with its overpowering fat, oil and/or sugar (and with that a permanent triggering of the "reward centers" in our brain), we lost a sense of "food-wisdom". Meaning: Knowing what your body needs given a certain activity/situation. So shoutout to (actually) Try and (maybe) Error. ;)
It's okay to be under the BMI scale i you're "otherwise" healthy. Why studies see risks with having a low BMI is because a lot of people that already have deceases also have low bmi (or are unable to eat)
For you it would be healthier to use oil in moderation rather than avoid it altogether, or perhaps to select foods higher in fat (like avacado, olives, or tahini, for instance). Also, be sure you get enough protein. Most people don't have that problem, though, but somebody who is underweight should be focusing on getting enough calories.
Thanks so much; I really appreciate how you talk about people with eating disorders. I'm in recovery from a gnarly eating disorder. I'm not underweight anymore; my BMI is actually 26 and that can be really hard to accept. However when I start cutting out or seriously avoiding any type of food, including oil, I start thinking and acting like I have an eating disorder again. Meaning, I think I ought to only eat meals that have less than 100 calories, no fat, no sugar, no grains. No high carb vegetables (there was a time that broccoli was too high carb for me). Then, after undereating all day, I overeat calorically dense foods in the evening, because I realize I’m HUNGRY! -- that’s how my BMI got up to 26. It’s far better for me to eat small amounts of oil throughout the day with my meals. Then I feel satisfied and I neither over- or undereat. To any omnivores who are wondering how being vegan and not cutting out types of food go together, that’s easy. Animal flesh and secretions aren't food.

Sticking with veganism without oil can be unsatisfying for people, especially if they have no time or don't know how to cook. Yes, the ideal diet consists of no oil, but if oil helps people eat mor vegetables and be satisfied with their vegan meals that's a win. Also! We definitely need a tiny house tour once it's finished!!
@@denboyz9735 Gregor actually says he tells people what is healthy and not what he thicks people must eat every day, so they can decide for themselves. He himself says he doesn't always follow those rules and that is fine. It doesn't matter what you eat sunday night, but what you eat the rest of the week.
Since becoming vegan over a year ago I have not used oil in cooking and I really don't miss it. I have learnt to use methods of frying that don't require oil.
I really really appreciate you making this video and clarifying your views about oil. I'm anorexic, currently at a stable weight, and I really wrestled with the decision to include oils in my diet when I was trying to gain weight from a BMI below 15. I just didn't know if it was healthy. Eating WFPB and nourishing my body is self-care for me, not disordered or restrictive, so my problem with oil was more about that and less about the caloric density/food fear component.
Just a thought on your progression of oil progression chart: selecting for omega 3 rich oils/oils low in omega 6 while still using oil in small amounts at home might be lower on the scale than eating oils when not at home, depending on a) the amounts used (spraying tofu before ovenbaking it vs. making mayo, even "low fat" one) and b) the frequency of eating out. For someone eating out/eating things other people prepared rather regularly, the total amount of oil might be difficult to get down as compared to someone who homecooks 13 of 14 days and occasionally sprays a pan with olive oil and that's it. I overcame a very stubborn weightloss plateau that way ;)
Oh... I really messed up my grammar here :-( won't edit though, as the comment has been up for quite a while now. And it won't hurt to practice owning my mistakes B)
You have a healthy glow and although you are fair skinned..there is not a thing wrong with your looks. I have 2 grown, smart, mostly vegan boys, so I know.
So helpful. Oil was one of the points I missed my first 2 years. Thought the few that mentioned it just had more specific preferences. Glad to be learning the science behind it all! Thanks Mic 🤗
I've struggled with my weight on a vegan diet for years but now I'm learning to cook without oils and I'm staying away from foods that have oil and the weight is really starting to come off now. You are totally right, oil really is the champ for weight gain. My goal is to stay in the low range on your chart. Can you explain why the new nutritional facts tables don't calculate the fat properly?
The reason calories from fat aren't being calculated anymore is because the FDA is more interested in how much added sugar is in a serving. They stopped doing calories from fat when they forced the added sugar category.
Eating disorders are almost always linked to personality disorders. Its weird that they are still discussed like they are separate conditions. Its self harm, common for borderlines etc.
Yes, comorbidity is common with eating disorder sufferers but that can include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders too. Personality disorders are basically with a person for all his/her life, eating disorders not so, they can be treated.
@@florencescheepers9736 Eating disorders can be threatened yes, but its usually just a symptom of some underlying issue. Unless its resolved, you will most likely just find other ways to self harm/sabotage that are not so obvious. I dont believe that there are people who only have an "eating disorder", as it would not have any use or function. It would be just utterly pointless behavior. Eating is so basic core function, much like sex that it mirrors the person inner landscape quite well.
I think people tend to be shocked/confused by the "don't eat oil" advice because they misinterpret it to mean that they shouldn't consume fat. This isn't helped by the fact that on nutritional labels, there is no distinction made between the grams of fat that come from added refined oil and the fats that occur in the whole food ingredients. The same problem arises in the discussions of sugar, because many people forget that there are many important differences between refined added sugars and naturally occurring sugars in whole foods.
I used to give my underweight daughter "buttered (vegan)" peanut butter toast (double-smear) and other nut-based products as well as avocados and coconut milk curries for more fat...now she loves peanut butter...and curry, and is a lovely young lady with a healthy weight and fortunately no eating disorders. Point being, when someone is failing to thrive, oil could save them, so no judgment, but whole foods are yummier and healthier! :-) PS totally cool you are building a house!

One reason to eat a bit of fat is to release more bile to reduce stone formation. I've dealt with gall and liver stones a lot and always being low fat may not be optimal in this way. Most people don't think about this.
Btw get Thincredibles tortillas- zero added fat. You can cut them into tortilla chip shapes and just toast them and voila! Guilt free tortilla chips. Similarly to make regrows beans without oil, take already cooked pintos and add a little marinara and grilled oil free chopped onions.
Thank you so much for mentioning eating disorders, I was looking for an excuse not to have oil today (as a recovering anorexic) but you’ve shown me I should do otherwise and not let it control me. Thank you- I really mean it.

(Don't know how you have the energy to go to school, build a house and make well researched videos??!!!) Amazing!
certainly that is a choice solely for you to make...However, just know that the science overwhelmingly supports that the amount of time that "your" never exists within (aka the amount of years you live) will be several years less than it would be if you chose to not consume Olive oil. best to you

Mic!! since you try to avoid oil in you the food that you cook, can you please do a suggested brand or type of pan that we can use that will not be a mess to clean. There are plenty out there that claim to be non-stick but we want to be sure on the choice that we make when spending several hundred dollars on a set. I would greatly appreciate your input on what pans you use to cook.
GoHomeRog I wish I could somehow test them all. I have learned that treating them right is half the battle. No using metal anything, for some don’t cook over medium temp, going from hot to cold too fats can mess them up too. Wish I had an answer.
It depends on whatn you want to cook. Sometimes non Teflon non stick is the best; sometimes seasoned cast iron is the best. I do find the new ceramic ones are not that non stick in practice and of course stainless steel is terrible.
Ok. Cause in November we bout the Red Copper pans. They were great for 6 months. Bought all silicone utensil for them and treated them pretty well. But the ones we use the most (3-5 times a week) are no longer "non-stick" ☹️
Your videos are so extremely helpful and I appreciate the fact that you share all of the knowledge you’ve come across. I have a condition called CPT II, and without the use of MCT oil, a medium chain triglyceride coconut oil derivative, my muscle cells can run out of energy and literally die off. I go into rhabdomyolysis and it's not fun. I think you'd agree that I fall into the camp whose immediate calorie needs outweighs any long-term health effects of oil consumption.

I am a binge eater and trying to limit my oil consumption. My favorite binge treat is popcorn...now I am spritzing the popcorn with water and sprinkling my homemade vegan nacho seasoning (no oil). The water helps the seasoning stick. I am also cooking with veggie stock instead of oil. This seems to be working for me. Not loosing weight but maintaining. :) Trying to loose 20 lbs....seems harder over 50 LOL
I avoid all oil whenever possible. Too easy for it to go rancid and I don't really like how heavy and greasy I feel after eating it... I don't freak out if I randomly eat something with oil in it though.
Thank you Mic! I definitely look at ingredients lists more for oil content. And I try to stir fry vegetables with water instead of oil. I have to keep looking more for baking alternatives. But I’m trying! Thank you for all your informative videos! Yours is probably one of the only channels that I get alerted to with new content, and watch as soon as possible.
I am definitely whatever ... and I don't see myself taking up the headache of trying to eliminate oil, the stress of even more restriction feels more hazardous to my health... 😄
I wish we could move the conversation away from BMI. It was only ever meant for use with population statistics, not individual health. Lots of things make it inappropriate including, as you mentioned, high muscle mass. A better metric for individuals (that has high statistical linkage to health outcomes) is waist to hip ratio. Even waist size alone is a better health predictor than BMI. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waist%E2%80%93hip_ratio
I've completely eliminated oil and fat from my cooking for an entire month as part of my whole food plant-based diet, and I've seen remarkable progress in reducing my dad bod with each passing day.its nearly flat now.
Honestly, I’ve seen some of Mike making food and I want my food to taste good. As someone adopting a mostly whole-food plant base diet, Im going to add oil to my food. Obviously by my name I’m Italian and olive oil is a big part of food making.
I guess I can think of another (admittedly fringe) exception to the "no oil" idea. I've been watching videos of people who do long-distance backpacking (for example the Pacific CrestTrail) and this is an activity where it is difficult to get enough calories in per day relative to expenditure, and it seems common practice to supplement dinners with olive oil to up the calories. Oil is popular because the calorie-to-weight ratio is high, a characteristic many ultralight backpackers are interested in. I do backpack, but instead seek to up calories with nuts rather than oil. But I get where they are coming from. It is cheaper to use oil rather than nuts when you're hiking for months at a time.
As lots of people have already mentioned thank you for addressing eating disorders! I’ve struggled with BED and bulimia primarily but part of my recovery has definitely been allowing myself to be less rigid and consume some processed foods including oil even though I still eat mostly whole foods (and everything is vegan of course) :)
I think the solution would be oil sprays. You can significantly reduce the amount of oil you consume with these sprays, and your foods will still be tasty. Honestly, I've tried cooking oilless, with water, but the food didn't taste as good, and it really made me want to stop eating those healthy foods (sweet potatoes, etc) and actually crave junk foods. So if a little bit of oil is going to encourage my habit of eating healthy foods, then hell, then I'd rather go with the grain rather than against. Again, oil sprays!
Zephyr López Cervilla Some spices actually don’t release their flavour and aroma without oil, but it’s been ages since I read up on it so I can’t remember which ones off-hand. 🤔

thank you so much for mentioning the factor about eating disorders, i really needed to hear that. as a 15 year-old vegan who has been struggling with anorexia since i was 11, avoiding oils was not beneficial to me. i ended up in another restrictive pattern and i accidentally lost weight (which is not good at all, since i'm already skinny). i still prefer to choose whole foods for the most part, but i'm no longer afraid to eat the meals that my mom cooks for me, which always tend to have oil in them.
You can add raw tahini to your meals, it's super nutritious and it's really good as a side dish with veggies :)

I'll be an oil flexatarian
@TheMatron'sMilitia Let me paraphrase what I said: "in reality, honey is quasi-vegan because it's beegan". Try to figure that one out.
@@annwilliams6438 No, it's a discussion between someone who thinks exploiting bees is vegan and someone who is rational.

So. I just got home from grocery shopping and after looking at the olive oil wall for a good 15mins, I remembered your vid on oil and I didn't buy oil. Does that mean I don't consume oil?

Now I use a little olive oil here and there, although my oil consumption is still relatively low, and I’ve been much happier. at least for now, as a relatively healthy 20 year old, i think it’s more important to focus on a healthy relationship with food than being fully oil free, and I think maybe this is true for others too
agreed. I felt extremely restricted/controlled and even depressed as someone who could never eat oil. I feel better when I stick to low oil.

Also struggled a bit with orthorexia, to the point where eating out with other people gives me major anxiety. Although whole food plant based has definitely helped me heal & have less fears around eating food.
Nice, balanced, well-reasoned video. As always ;) Thanks
I was actually underweight as a vegetarian, then ate more whole foods as a vegan and it fixed the issue. I gained 20lb and am normal weight now.
I also gained weight eating mostly fruit when I went vegan. I was thin before but wouldn't say I was underweight.
Fox Boy yeah I should’ve mentioned that you don’t need oil to gain weight. Thanks

What do you cook with?
I just cook with a bit of water or vegetable broth rather than oil. I do very, very, little frying anyway, just occasional light sauté. And for veggies, I'll often just microwave them - works very well, very tasty that way. Or I'll steam them, which also works great ( takes a little longer, and I'm lazy :). Simpler the better, for me.

You lost weight because cutting out oil meant that you cut out a fair amount of calories. Oil is about the most calorie dense item you could consume.

I really really appreciate you making this video and clarifying your views about oil. I'm anorexic, currently at a stable weight, and I really wrestled with the decision to include oils in my diet when I was trying to gain weight from a BMI below 15. I just didn't know if it was healthy. Eating WFPB and nourishing my body is self-care for me, not disordered or restrictive, so my problem with oil was more about that and less about the caloric density/food fear component.
lol, you cracked us up with that "here's a closeup for you to examine and criticize"
Thank you for addressing those of us with EDs. Been fighting diagnosed anorexia for 16 years, myself.

When you say "let's have a friendly discussion down below" it makes me think of a flatulence contest.
Mic is so healthy that he’s almost see-through!
I’m not religious and I’m hardly spiritual but if there’s anything I’ll do in my life along those lines is what’s best for all living beings. However navigating how to do that and stay healthy is hard in the society we live in. So fucking helpful. Thank you!
I only love the byproduct of soybean oil. Textured soy protein like 44g of protein per cup is insane! Perfect for cutting.
have you tried the soy curls? I like to make them with a teriyaki sauce. =]
I wonder what Mic's take is on any ____ protein isolates. I heard they are inflammatory but forgot from where.
@@Thepianoman77 Sadly i have not, but i plan on ordering them online!
The soy curls are just dehydrated soy beans and made into little strips.
im always amazed how the questions or thoughts that come to me watching your videos you answer in the next breath! even at the end i was just about to go search your other channel to see more about the gorgeous stairs
and then boom, you showed me! im such a fan
You look amazing 🤩
I love your skin🥰
Glowing with real health 💕⭐️
I have so much respect for you
You always nail it and I am so jealous of your tiny house !
Alcohol is a carcinogen?!?! I never knew this...
And heart disease.
Great info! Funny, you and Lily Koi are my go-to for Vegan info (plus Greger:) Your house looks fabulous. So much work I bet, but very satisfying. Love the windows in the loft...so open feeling.
I love that tiny house. You guys are doing a fantastic job.
Don’t paint the stairs white! It looks beautiful. Everything else A++
Taylor Armstrong ... I could also stain the plywood the same color as the treads....
@@MictheVegan Yesss! The little touches of wood in the stairs and window frames make it so much more homely I think
Mic the Vegan . I am an eco-friendly House. 👈, my design ☺️🤓 five minute. Sandwich panel, really quick 😉. 1,000 years ?? On the sandwich panel. Keep up the good work ✅😉
Taylor Armstrong I think he means he's painting the risers white, not the tread. Having the plywood unpainted next to those nice-looking treads would be a bad design choice
Mic the Vegan I would definitely go with the stain! My uncle has entirely plywood stained floors and they do appear quite esquite…
Try putting tamari or soy sauce in a sprayer for popcorn then yeast and garlic powder yum
Mic, how do you feel about flax oil, chia oil, hemp oil, etc and health foods/supplements?
@TheLocalFuzz That's easy same rules apply and eat them in whole food form as ground chia, flax, and hemp seeds.
I avoid all oil whenever possible. Too easy for it to go rancid and I don't really like how heavy and greasy I feel after eating it... I don't freak out if I randomly eat something with oil in it though.
I hate when people come for my olive oil. I live by the sword I die by the sword
lol don't worry about it, it's not like it's an animal product we have to avoid :)
just meditate more or something
Thank you for talking about this important topic Mic!

I've completely eliminated oil and fat from my cooking for an entire month as part of my whole food plant-based diet, and I've seen remarkable progress in reducing my dad bod with each passing day.its nearly flat now.
Are you going to cover this algae oil drama?
What's the algae oil drama? I take algae oil daily.
Great video Mic. You cover so much territory in your video and provide great info. Keep up the good job. Amazing job on the tiny house!
I quit oil because of you lol
Honestly, I’ve seen some of Mike making food and I want my food to taste good.
As someone adopting a mostly whole-food plant base diet, Im going to add oil to my food. Obviously by my name I’m Italian and olive oil is a big part of food making.
McDougall Approved...
Spoiler
Just kidding
🤣
8:35 thank goodness you're not a vegetable police !
Beard is coming on nicely- Tormund, watch out!
I live for the GOT reference.😱😋😂
I think the solution would be oil sprays. You can significantly reduce the amount of oil you consume with these sprays, and your foods will still be tasty.
Honestly, I've tried cooking oilless, with water, but the food didn't taste as good, and it really made me want to stop eating those healthy foods (sweet potatoes, etc) and actually crave junk foods.
So if a little bit of oil is going to encourage my habit of eating healthy foods, then hell, then I'd rather go with the grain rather than against. Again, oil sprays!
Eugen Vataman Oil spray bottles really do reduce the amount you use, and they’re great for coating things you plan to bake without saturating them!
Foods don't need any added oil to be tasty (nor salt, nor hot spices).
Zephyr López Cervilla Some spices actually don’t release their flavour and aroma without oil, but it’s been ages since I read up on it so I can’t remember which ones off-hand. 🤔
