Hullo Gem, I have avoided subscribing to art boxes as I am very particular about my art supplies. I have developed a desire for watching others like yourself and EmilyArts open your boxes and create an artwork on the fly as it is said. Now I have purchased several previous months boxes from Scrawlrbox and a couple of others I was impressed with. I think those purchases were to support the featured Artists or I saw a wonderful artwork created by a person like YOU And I just wanted to give it a try! Thank you for sharing this box with us, your attitude and positive outlook is truly inspiring. Please take care and have a lovely day 😊

I have missed your videos for a variety of reasons but catching up as you move, unpack and organize. I LOVED the meet and greet with the “coos”

I agree with everything you have said Gem. This box was the one that finally prompted me to stop my Upcrate subscription. The box combined with the change to magazine was it for me. Will be sticking with Scrawlrbox as they appear to be listening and making positive changes for their subscribers.

I've only ever had the Artful subscription box, I have too many art supplies already to justify having a monthly one! I like the Artful boxes best because I can also choose to see what's in the box and skip it if it's something I'm not interested in. I think for value for money, the Artful boxes can't be beaten, even their "poorer" ones still have everything you need to complete multiple artworks and their magazine is hands down the best.
I'm not surprised this box disappointed you, I'm not, and never have been, a fan of acrylic paints so I wouldn't have been happy! I also totally agree regarding the magazine going digital. I do art to escape from computer screens and phone screens because I have to use those daily for work, I wouldn't appreciate having to read the magazine digitally even though I do use a Kindle Paperwhite as my reading device of choice!

While I understand your reason for prefering the paper-magazine, I am actually excited for the digital version.
After checking out the paper-magaine I sometimes would cut out a page with information or an artpiece, and throw the rest away. I just dont have the space to store them ( I used to but after over a year I realized I never look in them and I could save that space).
I then do expect a better quality thou. More examples/information, less typos and maybe a short clip or gif of some things, besides the co-captains video. (Maybe even a comment section directly under it, for discussion and inspiration)
I do hope though, that it works for PC. I hate big smartphones and therefore only have a small screen. And reading a magazine on it isnt an option for me. They have a website, they just just integrate it in that (and make it work on smartphone).

I think you may have subscription box fatigue! You have seen everything now and few things get you excited. I think you get most excited about the quarterly Artful box. Maybe time to suspend all the other boxes and maybe try a different type of box? Maybe a crafting box? Something to do with resin? I am with you on the abstract. I have a hard time doing abstract because I am addicted to straight lines. I attributed it to having done years of drafting at a young age. I can appreciate abstract but I can't do it.

Too bad you cannot choose which box you would like magazine online or not. Totally see your point, I think many people use art as a way of getting away from screens. ❤

Thank goodness you're back! I don't think I'd be happy with that box as, like you said, we all tend to have loads of acrylic paint lying around our caves and craft rooms! But, always fun to play with anyway!

I've only kept my Artful subscription due to the variety of materials. I got fed up of the monthly boxes as they tended to be tubes of paint or markers/felt tips x

i actually had a lot of fun with the box 😄, even though i don't do anything with abstract art myself 🙈. instead of the wooden chopsticks, a pallet knife would certainly have been more practical. I'm already mourning the paper magazine, I'll miss it ☹

Hi there, liked what you did with thst box... btw, no, germany didn't get a knife or palette knife either. I am through one year of upcrate now (pausing two months), and this box, I consider the weakest of the lot, although colors are good, the paper and scraper tool were not quite mine... would have appreciated a palette knife and an XActo in there additionally (I have those, but a box should provide it). Continuing upcrste though, as I liked the boxes overall (best of the year imho were 41, 42 and 45). Keep it up, I like your videos.

I'm sad to see the magazine go away too. The rest of the box was meh.

Hello! Us here in Germany didn't get a scalpel of any description in our boxes, and i couldn't find mine so i used scissors. I would have loved to have got one of those ceramic type scalpels in the box, you know the ones that aren't meant to cut your fingers? That would have been nice. I quite enjoyed this box, but i did a lot of colour mixing to get colours i liked, spent a long time using scissors to cut shapes into the tape, and decided not to bother myself with the theme. I enjoy seeing everyone else's work, but i don't necessarily think people adhere too closely to the topics. But they are usually pretty vague anyway. I've liked having the paper bottlepost, it's nice to go back and look at occasionally, but i am not too bothered if it goes digital. Will we get more paper in the boxes though? Hmm... I have my doubts that will last longer than a month or 2. We shall see!

If I got this box, which I don't, the digital format would be a no go. 5 min. staring at a computer screen and the eye fatigue kicks in.

HI, Gem! Oops - apologies. I didn't intend to type all this, just the first part. It just sort-of made its way out onto the screen as my thoughts unravelled... But maybe something here is interesting to someone who may have the courage to read the whole thing? Debate is welcome, btw. 😄
Many thanks for keeping me engaged for the full length of the video!!! (even though it's using acrylics - environmentally friendly? Absolutely not!! Acrylic = plastic, in a form that goes down our drains, however careful we are. Oops, sorry - soap-box digression there! )
Written with the Upcrate people in mind, cos they may just read through our comments (?!?): Going digital, instead of a physical magazine may be cheaper for them, but onscreen is a big no-no for any of us whose work involves uses computers for a large part of our day! Add into that the issues of colour-variance in our screens, many of us not having QR-enabled phones, and even if we had, using such a small screen (and even a computer) adding to eye fatigue and posture issues...
With reference to abstract art: at 24.29, you have the profile of a lady with a large bun hairstyle. At 26.29 you have a horse-like animal's head, and under its nose there is a hare at full stretch, jumping up onto a rock. Some of us just see it naturally (eg janscott9151 has commented that she saw an armchair). Some of us see it when we point it out, others don't see it at all. It just is what it is... but I encourage looking for it, cos it's fun!
We can all do 'abstract art' within its proper definition. Just playing with our paints is abstract art. All our colour swatches are abstract art. It's great fun to look at the blobs of colour mixing testing, and to see what is there - mine are mostly heads, but icecreams, trucks, boats, cup cakes, butterflies... If you get a minute, take a look and see if you can see anything and then outline it in pen. It's a lot of fun, and mine actually get stuck into my sketchbook, and when I'm out, folk who stop to look are fascinated, and discover that they, too, can make art!
A question of lexical semantics: 🤔😄Making abstract art is something we do every time we paint or draw. We are abstracting parts of what we see to make marks on paper. I've always been really sad that 'Abstract Art' has been given to name a plethora of variations, some of which are what I would call 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. Some of it genuinely is abstract - Picasso's stuff may be weird (some of which I love, some of which worry me deeply!), but it truly is an 'abstract'. But Van Gogh's work is also abstract - taking what he saw and painting what his 'inner eye' saw. When we decide to change the colour to something totally different (eg a landscape using purple and orange instead of blue and green) is abstract art.
Oops - just realised how long this is! Sorry again. I didn't intent to type all this. It just sort-of made its way out onto the screen as my thoughts unravelled... But maybe something here is interesting to someone who may have the courage to read the whole thing? 😊

I'm still not a huge fan of upcrate, tbh. Though I am also considering to end my ScrawlrBox subscription, but mostly due to the fact that I've collected so many art supplies over the past four years that I'm not sure I need the box to stay creative... and I hardly even do the challenges anymore, because the last two just didn't really speak to me 🤷‍♀ but then I also like getting the box every month xD
Abstract art also isn't my thing 😅 though I think it can be a lot of fun, if you dare to experiment a little

I’m with you, Gem. This box doesn’t seem to have much value in it at all really. I have a question, are you still getting your value out of this particular subscription in terms of cost & ROI? Cave Washi sounds so so exciting though!! (Will there be wee coos?!)

I was kinda disappointed with this box too. It's not a bad box... it's just... well, like you've said, it would have been fun to have more texture options. The magazine thing is a shame too, though I can see their side too. it's expensive and prizes have gone up so much, they may not be able to afford making the box with magazine anymore.
About the abstract art... I personally get super frustrated (well, I'm gonna be honest... I go berserk. that's the level of frustrated/angry I get) when trying to make abstract art. It looks so easy, but for me it's a feat of unimaginable strength. I don't understand how people do it.. just slap paint here, and there, and squish it about, move it about and make it look good. My brain can't handle it 😂
I do like the colorful piece you've created here 😄very cool color combination!

Oh this would have been just a horror for me. On various levels. I don’t have any subs now and glad I don’t. I’m afraid abstract isn’t for me - I too have a logical mind. I suppose we could analyse your mental state like Rorschach’s stuff!! I saw a comfy armchair in your big blotch at one stage. The move to digital magazine is a massive shame. I do have digital mag subs (I live in a small flat, storage at a premium) but I still get excited by physical ones. And as someone who is an IT Support Analyst I really don’t need to stare at a screen when I’m doing my own art (aside from the online classes I take in watercolour, but that’s me learning before I go out and sketch).

I don’t see much value in that box. The paints look a bit meh and the scraper is easily replicated by using an old expired credit card.
