So glad that, even though you weren’t excited about the contents, you had a play and actually enjoyed making something. It’s great to see and lovely to hear you having fun ❤
Lovely video! So much fun! I have oil pastels that I use for backgrounds in coloring books. On smooth paper they create lovely gradients and blend like a dream. And as you mentioned, they go down quickly! Thank you Gem! You're a blessing to the art community❤❤
I dont like that they dont provide the magazine anymore... i totally get why people want to stop wasting paper or plastic, but no one including our govern ments will use hemp paper or plastic, it takes like 6 weeks from plant to harvest, and we wouldnt be chopping down our lungs/trees but wed also have an abundance of paper and plastic alternative that biodegrades easily and relatively quickly.
Not for me as I don't like oil pastels, but still a fun box overall and very cohesive as a theme. The 'nanas were ace! I've never drunk my paint water because I use a water bottle for my drinking water and a Thermos mug for my tea! Also my water is in Kilner jars or a Paint Puck pot, so no stray mugs of paint water lying around!
"I doubt it'll be straight oil paint as [...] you need a lot to get it done" You know, as an oil painter for 20 years, I wish I could get to be the featured artist for a sub box just to show how much a myth that is! It's such a common misconception, but here I am with my tubes of colour (usually 5, but can get by with 3), 1-2 brushes, a couple squares of toilet paper and... well, that's it except for the painting surface and water & soap in the bathroom. 🤷 Unless I'm making my own surface. Okay, I'm off my soap box and on to the video! 😅
I liked the look of this box. Not a fan of the 'canvas papers' but looked like a good one in that category. The oil pastels I have. 😅 Just bought the full 60 set of the Van Goghs, actually. 😁 They're really cheap (the 60 set was 26 euros, no sales/discounts) but great to use. I bought them to complement my Sennelier oil pastels. The Contes I can take or leave, haven't really been reaching/found a use for them. Your piece turned out great! Such an expressive little sketch. And you really sounded like you were having fun. I think this was a great box for so many others as well. Well done, Upcrate.
Glad you had fun with it. Love the bananas! What I really want to try with oil pastels are those things where you use a palate knife to make flowers and stuff with them. Not sure how they get them so creamy but I kinda wanna poke that style. Looks really satisfying.
Hullo Gem, thanks for sharing your experience with us. I loved seeing you create a wonderful piece with this box! I am not a fan of the oil pastel medium. I have recently started working with soft pastels and I am hooked! I have even made a set-up with a dust catcher tray on an easel that tips forward towards me as I paint! Yes, paint with pastels not draw! I believe that most people who are struggling with pastels oil or soft(chalk) are trying to draw and not paint with them. Learning how to create marks and creating a painting is very different than most mediums that I have ever used! Thank you for sharing your time and efforts with us. You are truly inspirational and just so lovely, thank you. Ummm Gem? Banana’s grow on a tree and are gathered in bunches. I am just not sure if you were serious, having a laugh or just being silly for silliness sake!

We use that antiseptic too! Blue, blue my hands are blue! lol! As always, a delight to watch your video! Your truffles sound good! Happy Birthday! Love your bananas!
I would have been very meh about this box if it was not for the prompt. FRUITS!! that's such a fun subject matter, and with plenty of options! I would love for you to do more fruit :)
I have to say, I enjoyed it! It's just not a medium I work in - I think if I worked on a bigger scale it's something I'd probably get into more. Hurray for diverse art supply tastes!
Conte crayons are hard pastels (as opposed to the soft pastels) and are nothing to do with wax crayons. The word crayon is used for pastels in some countries.
I have a set of Camel Oil Pastels on my shelf... still have to really use them for something, though xD I just feel like the things I would create with them just turn out way better if I use watercolours 😅
I concur. I regularly think this when I do these challenges on-camera… I’m always in my head saying ‘This would be much better if I was working in pencil’ 😁
Maybe you can try melting the crayons, and maybe the pastels, and use the like and encaustic medium. I can't believe "encaustic" was in my auto correct
Interesting box for sure, though definitely not for me since I don’t like oil pastels at all. I don’t know why, as the chalk pastels I love. Anyway, that was a very lovely bunch of bananas. 😅

We say Scelf in Ireland too. Love the channel.

This was the sole reason I carried on. Such a fun box!
This video was so fun!
I must be one of the only people who likes getting pastels in sub boxes lol😝
I have to say, I enjoyed it! It's just not a medium I work in - I think if I worked on a bigger scale it's something I'd probably get into more. Hurray for diverse art supply tastes!
def can be easier to work in a bigger scale with pastels, just creates A LOT of dust if its soft pastels 😝

This made me laugh.

Can you really call yourself an artist or crafter if you haven't drank the paint water?
I’m not sure… is that a requirement? I’ve been told I’m not a ‘proper’ artist because the Cave isn’t ‘messy’ enough… maybe I’m an impostor 🤭😮
I have never drank a waste water/rinse cup or jar! I do consider myself an Artist. I also believe Gem to be an amazing artist too!
