Houston Astros! they're really good but besides that, if you plan on actively watching or listing to the games regularly the Play by Play guys are great- both TV and Radio.

Which ever team you root for, remember that due to MLB having 2 leagues you can pick a second team to keep an eye on. The two will rarely play each other and at the beginning of the season you can have the hopes of the two being the last two standing.

Astros fan. Mariners is always a great choice. They have a dedicated fanbase who have somehow someway with all their talent in their history, have never won a world series. They seem like a fun teem to root for. Astros obviously are set to win the next 10 years, and the Rays are pure fun, and they have a moneyball strategy to get hidden gems for cheap because their franchise is worth one of the least amount of money in the mlb.

I will vouch for the mariners. If you like underdogs, this is the best option for an underdog team that actually has a chance at getting far into the postseason next year. Last season they broke a 20-year playoff drought which was the current longest of any of the four major american professional sports leagues. I am 20 years old was born and raised in Seattle, our city love this team and we finally have hope after a long, dark era for baseball in our city. I encourage you to check out Cal Raliegh's playoff-ending homer if you want to see what our fans are like. Also if you plan on watching baseball for a long time, Julio Rodriguez is a budding star who signed a big contract extension and will be with us for a long time, you should watch some of his highlights as well. It will be fun to watch his career evolve into a baseball great if keeps current his pace up.

I'm an Astros fan as I once lived in Houston, so I'm biased.
But, I would second this. They're honestly gaining momentum in a big way in the American League and have had some legendary players in their ranks like Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson aka the Big Unit.

@@MiG-21bisFishbedL noooo. They have some good players right now. Their ownership is bad. They had shown no effort to improve and win for years and years. After this small stretch they will go back to being bad. Dont tell anyone to follow this team. Its setting themselves up for a life time of sadness.

The Angels for me even though I live nowhere near California but only for masochistic yet interesting reasons. Masochistic bc they always choke (especially last year). Interesting bc they've got (arguably) 2 of the best players in the entire league, Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout both in their prime. I'm excited for the Angels this year but will always take them with a grain of salt.

The braves are the most well run organization in the league with a great history and fan base. Be careful a lot like European football many owners use teams just for the income and have no intention of fielding a good team. Myself I’m a reds fan and it’s heartbreaking never being able to see my team be competitive

I think the Mariners are the best pick, they are the only team to have never made it to a world series so you wouldn't be accused of hopping on a bandwagon. They're a young, exciting and fun team that just broke a 20 year playoff drought and everything is looking up. They also have one of the biggest young stars in Julio Rodriguez

I'm an Astros fan through and through but you picked some good teams. Mariners will make you happy. More than likely will see them in the post season this year. Probably won't win it all but you'll have fun.
Brewers are solid. I can see you rocking some brewers merch and there are much worse teams out there.
The Yankees are a good team truthfully but they don't really meet expectations which is they haven't won a world series in over a decade. They spend too much money not to win it. It's easy to like the Yankees considering their history. The fans are something else tho.

First of all, I just subscribed and want to say as a die-hard baseball fan how cool it is that you’ve fallen in love (not sure if that’s a bit strong, but regardless) with our great sport. Support any team you like, truly. Of the ones you listed, I think Kansas City or Seattle could be good; however, as you are in the UK, perhaps you should consider an East Coast team to make it more feasible to attend games when you are able. Accordingly, I’d like to recommend my Red Sox to you. Boston has a long (at times contentious, certainly) relationship with the UK and we have the greatest stadium in the game: Fenway Park (est. 1912). Our franchise has seen some tough times, but since 2004 we have won 4 World Series and have a large payroll generally allows us to afford exciting players. We also have an excellent up-and-coming minor league shortstop named Marcelo Mayer, major leaguers like Rafael Devers who just signed for 10+ more years, and, historically, legends like Ted Williams (last to bat .400 in a season), Carl Yastrzemski, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, and many more. It would be honor to have you join Red Sox Nation, and the flight from London to Boston, which I’ve done several times, is not bad! We also have Spring Training in Florida if you ever want to go to that (West Coast teams train in Arizona). Even if you don’t choose us, though, I must implore you.. do NOT choose the Yankees!! All the best, Michael

im an Astros fan. if i had to suggest a team for a neutral fan to pick it would be SD. I love the city. spent time there in the Marines. if I had to leave Houston again I would choose to live there. Its beautiful and the team is incredible right now and the ownership has shown they want to win. Ownership is very important to selecting a team. You dont want these dog ass owners that dont care about winning and only want to turn a profit. Teams that go for it are very important. I would tell him to pick the Astros but after the scandal I would just suggest they avoid that right now and go with SD. Cant miss with either team because they are ownership committed and thats important.

Astros v. Cardinals is funny because they’re old rivals. I’m an Astros fan so I would say to go with them, but the Cardinals have a long and storied tradition. Can’t go wrong with either
Yankees v. Diamondbacks… please don’t pick the Yankees
Rays v. Mariners is interesting, both are young franchises with not a lot of success. The Rays have been competitive more often recently so maybe go with them?
Brewers v. Marlins: Brewers ballpark is more nice, and their mascot goes down a huge slide every time they hit a home run. Bernie Brewer is his name if you want to look him up

Just watched all of your World Series vids. Love to see youe enthusiasm. You should check out game 7 of the 2016 world series. The Cubs hadn't won a championship since 1908 and the Indians since 1948. Many consider it to be one of the best games of all time. Definitely too long for reaction, but you'll enjoy watching it.
Also, don't pick the Marlins. You'll only be disappointed. Terrible ownership. As long as you don't go with the Yankees, you'll be a respectable fan in our eyes.

gotta come in here and suggest the Cubs, long, rich history (filled with mostly losing from 1909-2015, but there are some good teams and iconic players in that stretch) beautiful old stadium with an unmatched atmosphere, passionate fanbase whether the team is good or not, and right now it's a team on the rise. Lots of fun to watch, likable players as well. Be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • @Josh-ut4wv
    @Josh-ut4wv ปีที่แล้ว +3

Now this is a very dynamic list. I am an Astros fan myself and it is a great team and it does have a great atmosphere and the stadium is a cool place because it is right next to downtown and one of the entrances is an old train station that had stood there for a very long time. Also it is a very good team and many of the players they have are going to be there for at least the next few years with some chasing great milestones such as 2,000 hits and later 3,000 hits. A very storied franchise as it was one of the early expansion franchises (came in the same year with the Mets) that does produce a lot of great pitchers even in there day back in the old Astrodome. Also they have a great mascot. Philles also a great franchise on the rise with good talent now there issue is that they are very much offense and starting pitcher heavy which is great but they can run into trouble. They have been around for a long time and have had many great play on there team. There mascot is also great. One issue is you have to deal with fans from the city of Philadelphia and they are very routy there American football team's stadium has a jail (or did at one point in time). Yankees ok from an historic perspective amazing franchise as they have one the American league 40 times and have won the world series 27 times. Now one issue with that is 7 of that 27 have been since 1976 with the last one being in 2009 and they have struggled quite a bit as they haven't beat the Boston Red socks in a postseason since Boston came back down 3-0 in the ALCS back in 2004 and they have face the Astros several times in the post season 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 they have lost every time. Another pro is that many of the all time greats of baseball have played there. Another con is that the Yankees have the mentality if you don't win the world series you failed and they often turn on players going through hard times. The Mets another New York franchise this one was given to New York after the city lost both the Giants and the Dodgers over in Brooklyn to California as a sorry. This is a franchise that can throw money around and has a great team right now. Cons well you have to deal with Yankees as the two teams hate one another and you also have the classic Mets choke. The Mets choke is basically the Met are going great but then all the sudden it comes crashing down and the either get knocked out of the playoffs or get eliminated playoffs spots and this happens a lot. Rays: Tampa bay has a very good team there pitching core has been great for some time. Unfortunately no world series win here but maybe they will get it one day as they have made it several times to the World Series. The biggest con is the Trop and that is their stadium the issue is the fans don't come even though there team is good and also it feels a lot older than it is, but with that said they are trying to get a new place. Blue Jays a very great team biggest issue is that they are in the same league with the Yankees who often win it so there is that. The Rogers center is also a great venue being the oldest one with a retractable roof and it also has a cool hotel inside now if you ever go to a game in the hotel that glass is NOT one sided so don't do anything embarrassing. The team is also very good. Cardinals another storied franchise they too also have a lot of World Series win (no where close to the Yankees though). There stadium is also very lovely. The team has some solid players and it does help that the NL and AL central have been weak for a few years. Unfortunately you did miss their historic 2022 season which had many long term Cardinals retire ending with one of them getting 700 home runs. The Cubs i know i sound like a broken record but this is a very very storied franchise. Intresting thing about this franchise is that their stadium Wrigley field is the second oldest in MLB (behind Fenway park) also they did have a historic 108 year world series drought record that is still the longest for any franchise in the world i think but north America for sure but that was broken in 2016 when they won the World Series. Since then they have been pretty good though they have dipped down a bit but it seems like 2023 looks to be a good season and again they are in the NL central which is weak so they might make the playoffs. Brewers intresting thing is this team started out as the Seattle Pilots but that only lasted one season. There stadium have a very cool design and if they get homeruns their mascot will go down a slide. This team does have some good pieces and who knows as they too like the Cubs and Cardinals are in the NL central so they might do it or they might be like this year and struggle just enough to miss the playoffs also no world series wins here either. Rockies now if you love a lot of home runs then this team is for you. Not because they can get it more because of where they are. The high altitude actually makes it easier to hit home runs in their park than in most other stadiums. To combat this they actually freeze the balls before the game but still there is only so much you can do. Again no world series wins but they almost did it in 2007 with Rocktober. Diamond backs this team looks to be on the rise and so that is promising. The issue is they share a division with the LA dodgers and the San Diego padres both very good teams and the Giants don't like to give a bunch of wins up either and they cant play just the Rockies in their division. This team did win the world series back in 2001 and even though it is new it has had a decent amount of great players throughout its short history. Miami this team is one of struggles issue is while there stadium is like a post modern futuristic look their owner doesn't pay that kind of money and often sends talent away. But this team did just have a Cy young winner so all is not bad though another issue is the NL east is hard as you have the Phillies, Mets, and Braves all very good teams and again they cant play just the Nationals. Royals this is a team that might be thinking about a rebuild it is really unknown as they are trying to leave their current stadium. This team does have some good players and some greats near the end of their careers and who knows since they are in the AL central which is also weak they might put something together though unlikely as they finished last in their division with 97 losses. This team did win the world series in 2015 after narrowly beating the Astros, then beating the Blue Jays, and then finishing off the Mets. Padres this team just threw a ton of money around and this year they might get over that LA bump and win the division as they handled the Dodgers in the playoffs. The stadium is very nice and it does have a cool touch of a old building being a part of the stadium (similar to the Astros). Tigers well this is a rough one as basically since 2017 they have been going through a perpetual rebuild and sucking a lot as while in the AL central they lost 96 games just narrowly missing last place in the AL central. While a storied franchise by having some of the best hitter and pitcher play there going back to the great like Ty Cobb and to today with guys like Justin Verlander and Miggy. Now this season will be Miggy's last and currently he is the only active hitter in the league with 500 home runs and the same goes for 3000 hits. So it would be cool to see that as he is going to retire after this season. Finally the Mariners had this been like 2 or 3 years ago I would have said run as this is a franchise that gets your hopes up only to crush them but then 2022 happened and they were very good being the playoff team that gave the Astros the most trouble. There stadium is very cool and has the roof opened almost all the time. Now one down side is in the offseason they didn't make a lot of big moves and with them being in the AL west with the Astros it might not be as easy as 2022 as the Rangers made some big moves and the Angels made some moves that might hurt their chances.

Let’s go Mets! Things are only getting better ! This is our year! #LGM 🍎
The Mets have been known as Underdogs for their entire existence. The team is getting better and has a real chance to win soon. This is paired with the richest owner in baseball, willing to do what it takes to win! The Mets would be a great choice to root for. As to picks, I'd suggest: Cardinals over Astros because the Cardinals almost always have a great team and have a long history of greatness. Yankees over Diamondbacks. It pains me to say it but the Yankees are the most iconic team in baseball. But if you like to root for the underdog or don't like the popular choice then Diamondbacks instead. Rays or Mariners... toss up. Mariners are an older team, neither have a lot of success or history. If I had to choose, Mariners. Finally Brewers vs Marlins... I like the Marlins more and I think they have some nice young talent too, but Brewers are probably more likely to be a contender. Still, I'd go with the Marlins.

Cardinals Nation would love to have you as a fan. The Cardinals have a rich history of winning, colourful characters (see, I even added a "u" in colorful for you), passionate and dedicated fans, and easily the most gorgeous uniforms in the game. If you're interested, I'd be happy to personally give you a rundown on Cardinals history (or, heck, the history of any of the teams you listed), and even help with the finer (see: rather confusing) points of baseball. Tampa Bay Rays.....perhaps one of the smallest market team in the league with very limited revenue but yet make playoffs often as well as the world series. Curious to see your reaction to houston when you learn about their checkered past. They are the most despised team in baseball along with the yankees and red sox, but the latter two are probably hated more because their fans than the team themselves, a lot like the cowboys in football. I root for the pittsburgh pirates because my favorite player was roberto clemente but i would never recommend them until they get a new owner who cares about winning and not just profits. You should perhaps react to a video about roberto clemente, he is the only player the hall of fame ever waived the 5 year waiting period for enshrinement. His career was remarkable but its his life story that makes him so special.

Dodgers should've undoubtedly been on this list. Massive fanbase, iconic logo, historical franchise, 2nd most valuable franchise behind the Yankees, star players, always make the playoffs, supported by a ton of celebrities. Think of them like a Manchester City at the moment.
    BUT...
If they're not on here, I'd have to say the Padres should deserve some looking into. Check out their recent "FanFest" interview with some of their stars like Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis, and Xander Boegarts... they are crazy about the padres in San Deigo right now. They're experiencing a renaissance of fan support in that city, new star power, and the entire city of San Diego with over a million inhabitants, only have the ONE team to support as they have no other franchise In any of the other 4 major sports. So the entire city is bleeding padres Brown at the moment. Not a person around San Diego who isn't being touched by the Padres, an absolute Gold Rush of support for those guys.

Texas Rangers is my choice in the American League, and the St.Louis Cardinals is my choice for the National League. In the 1950s when I was just a little lad, the Cards was the western most team and their games were broadcasted over clear channel KMOX. After the sunset, local radio stations turned off and the clear channels boosted their power, and you could tune in KMOX anywhere from the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains to the western slope of the Appalachian Mountains clearly. After moving to Fort Worth, of course
I started rooting for the local team.
I suggest you route for a team your friends or family support. Just about all the curses or jinxes have been removed. If you want to support winning teams over also rans, pick a team that prioritizes pitching during the draft and not hitting. I know it sounds foolish as there is just one pitcher on the Diamond at a time, almost half the 25 man major league roster are pitchers. Teams that do not draft near 50% pitchers rarely go far in the playoffs.

You should join a Fantasy Baseball League, Roto style, which is based on stats, lots of stat category's in batting and pitching. A good Roto League will have lots of stats for you to compete with according to the performance of your players. But, Head to Head Leagues are fun too. Playing in a Fantasy Roto League will take you into the Rabbit whole of baseball and you'll learn quite alot about baseball and it's fun if you are in a good highly competive Roto league. First, you'll have the Draft and then the daily managing of your team. Roto is a lot of fun because there many ways to win or compete for 1st place and you don't have to have the best players to win, but you do need some great players, make sure you do your homework before the Draft so you can draft the best players wherever you are in the Draft Order. Roto baseball kinda like the stock market, players are up and down and it's up to you who you play on a daily basis, pay attention and don't get suckered in a Trade during the season, do your homework before accepting a Trade. I like Yahoo! Fantasy Basebal! Good Luck!

Now you could choose a team with a reasonable chance of success or a team with a personal connection OR you could choose the Minnesota Twins if you'd like to be disappointed every year. It also serves as a nice gateway to the other Minnesota sports teams which will also disappoint you on a regular basis. Consistency. On the bright side, we did win the 1991 World Series which was a great series that I remember fondly. Just a thought.

Major League Baseball has two different leagues, the American League & the National League. It use to be that the American League & National League teams would never play anyone from the opposite League until the two best teams from each League met in the World Series. Now, there is interleague play, where American & National League teams play one another in the regular season. The World Series is still a match up of the American League and National League Champions though.
So I suggest you pick a team from both Leagues to follow! I'm biased, and say for the American League the Astros are a great choice. They're a Dynasty team in the making, have been in the American League Championship for the last 5 Consecutive years (which is extremely rare) and been to 4 World Series in 6 years. They're still poised to keep making deep runs. Some other fun American League teams though .. : Seattle Mariners are a young up and coming team, and a division rival for the Astros. Toronto Blue Jays are also a very young and up and coming team.
From the National League the San Diego Padres are a very fun team, the Phillies are fun to watch, the New York Mets may have the best pitching rotation in baseball, and the Atlanta Braves are all excellent teams.

Unless you like just being sad, I would stay away from Tampa, Colorado, and Miami - each have terrible ownership groups that never spend any money on good players, and sell off their own prospects as soon as they get good (and thus expensive). The Rays have one quirk that they're widely considered one of the smartest teams in baseball, so they're very good at picking up on players who other teams don't think are very good, and then getting the best from them. But they spend *so little* that they can't ever really capitalize on this and win a championship. There's also a lot of drama about their stadium, which is old, is not very good, and has artificial turf that hurts players' knees.

If you want an easy and happy fan life filled with championships ‐ Yankees
However, if you don't want to just support a team that gets their title from having a big budget to pay the top players, there are other options.
Not saying all teams with big budget are successful (i.e. The Mets, Cubs).
If you want a direct rival against the Yankees [the evil empire], then go with Red Sox.
Beware of some small market team that are in a perpetual rebuild or team owners with zero interest in winning, only see their team as a profitable business.

I live in Turkey and have a special interest in American sports. But there is something I've been wondering about for a very long time. This question is not just about baseball, it's about all sports.
Does everyone in America have to support their own city and state's team? For example, can't someone who was born and raised in Los Angeles and still lives there support the Bulls because they watched Jordan in their childhood or the Cavs because they watched James? If they do, will they be betraying their own city? Can they comfortably walk the streets of Los Angeles wearing a Bulls jersey, or will they face backlash? I don't fully understand why sports are viewed as city and state focused rather than team focused? (of course I respect it, maybe I don't know because I'm not American).

Just throw out the Marlins and Rays if atmosphere is important to you. You'll have the stadium to yourself unless a big team comes through.
Yankees - they're the Manchester United of the MLB. Stories, lots of championships, and supported well outside of city boundaries. But, also the most hated. No one "kinda" likes the Yankees.
Houston - on a heater the past decade, but lots of controversy. Caught cheating (stealing signs via video) after their first world series win, which casts a shadow on everything they've done since.
Phillies - Philadelphia is hands down the best sports city in the country. Fans are ruthless, loud, they tear up the city. They even call themselves the Broad Street Hooligans. But, the Phillies can go through stretches of being awful. The best team to root for if you want a rollercoaster ride every year. Just don't pick them if you want to take your kids to the game. You'll hear and see some shit. But, an easy direct flight from London with a less than 10 minute Uber ride to the stadium from the airport.
    Brewers - Meh.
Rockies - They'll have a good year once in a while, otherwise pretty bland. Cool purple and black uniforms, but Denver is on another planet so not exactly a place you can visit and then go see other places easily.
D-Backs : The #1 reason to pick them is you would get to go to Phoenix to watch. Other than that, don't bother.
Mets/Cubs : how important is it to you to be perpetually disappointed and be looked down upon by everyone around you? If you have to pick one of these, pick the Cubs.
SD : really fun team to watch lately, but they were bottom of the barrel for a long time. Probably the team that has the highest bandwagon factor in the league right now.
Toronto: Love their vibe, and generally a decent team, but very dull overall. Not much fanfare for Toronto. You want a team that travels well and people show up for on road games. Also, stadium isn't great.
Cardinals: the safest pick. Fans there are super knowledgeable about baseball, are nice Midwesterners, and the team is usually very good. Storied history, good ball park, lots of good players cycling through, good rivalries (like the Cubs). But, almost too safe. The least exciting one for you to pick. Also, St Louis is a shit city.
Seattle: don't do it. Cool team, sometimes good, nice park, nice city. But just an afterthought team. You'd be relying on them having a huge prospect come through that takes the world by storm, and even if that happened, he'd be traded soon after anyway.
    Missed picks:
Braves: a lot of people hate on the Braves, myself included. But, they destroyed that division for 15 years, and won a WS a couple years ago. And the main reason--it's who people in Alabama follow.
Orioles: not usually very good. But, the best park in baseball in the coolest setting. Maybe the most fun games to go to. They play the Yankees and red Sox a ton, being in the same division, so lots of firepower come to town. The atmosphere outside of the park is fantastic, as it's built in town, not in a remote parking lot like a lot of them. I've been to 20 MLB stadiums, and this is my favorite (other than going to my Phillies games). Also, nosebleed tickets are dirt cheap. And the best "standing room only" ticket in baseball. Grab a few beers and hang out at the top of the right field wall, leave and go to the harbor, aquarium, restaurants, etc. The best Sunday afternoon team in the sport.
Extra thought: You might want to consider a team based on time zone. If you're able to watch in the morning, west coast teams play at 7pm pacific most days, which is 5am for you. East coast teams would be on at 2am. However, if there's a matinee game (~1-2/week), that would mean you get to watch east coast at 5pm. West coast at 8.
And regardless of what you do, look at the MLB Network package and make sure they don't black out any teams where you are. It may seem dumb, but they'll black out games in places where games don't even air. It's a huge thorn in the side of MLB fans.
Also, watch some historical recap videos to get a feel for the sport. Baseball is about three things:
1- history. It's no longer the most popular sport in America, but it's by the far the most historic. Like a shitty father, it's in our blood even if we wish it weren't.
2- With that is the overall vibe in America with kids and upbringing. We grow up playing little league. Almost everyone played as a kid, even if briefly. Some stop, and some keep going. It's a big part of just existing in the USA on a summer weekend. You'll see fields all over, hear the bats hitting balls in the distance, watch a foul ball bounce across the road when you're driving by a field, etc. Also, everyone has a cousin, friend from school, buddy's wife's sister's friend, or someone who played professionally. I grew up with a guy with a 10 year MLB career who lives a minute away, and I see a hall of famer mowing his lawn when I'm running errands. It's built into the fabric of this country.
3- Statistics. While all sports have crazy stats nowadays, nothing comes close to baseball. 162 games a year for each team means the sample size is something that makes an analyst like me love the game. I could look at Baseball-Reference for hours and never get bored.
Lastly, look into the minor league system of baseball. It's the closest thing we have to the clubs in GB. There are very few areas in this country that don't have a minor league team. All of those players are signs and committed to an MLB team. Each MLB team has a network of minor league teams called their "farm system". It's fascinating to dive into.

I’ve been to a lot of ballparks & Toronto loves baseball… when they’re good. It’s a tough division to play in but are real contenders as of late.
Cardinals. I was super disappointed. Large crowd of people but their knowledge of baseball ends with their Cardinals. Not very friendly either. Not mean but not talkative.
Philly has the best fan base - of any sport - in the country. We can get a bad rap but that’s totally overblown!! Families will definitely enjoy themselves (even Mets fans!) Citizens Bank has a whole kids section & the freaking Phantic!! Also, we don’t win often but when we do, crime in the city ends & schools close the following day! Haha
The Padres are their only sports team left in the city (having lost the NFL Chargers to LA) & having great success w/ their team has really made San Diego shine!
The Mariners never won a Pennant & that city is still in love with their team! They’re finally contenders & hopefully their Pennant drought will end in the next few seasons!

I will add the Astros arent the only one who stole signs as the Yankees, Red socks, Rockies, and Dodgers all did it. Also the fact stands with that 2022 win only 5 players were on that 2017 team that were with the Astros for 2022 two of them were pitchers so they dont count. One of those hitters was Altuve who didnt participate in the sign stealing. So that leaves two Bregman who will most likely retire an Astros as he wants to stay with the team and Gurriel who isnt even an Astro right now.

As far as other teams go, the Diamondbacks, Padres, Rockies, Cubs, Rays, Giants, Marlins and Royals would be great secondary options.
