To anyone watching this in 2022 or later. It is now outdated. The MLB added a 6th team for each league. Now 4 plays 5, and 3 plays 6 in best 2 of 3 wild card series all at the higher seeds stadium. Winner of 4 vs 5 plays 1, and winner of 3 vs 6 plays 2 in the division series

The only real differences is that now the lowest-seeded division winner partakes in the Wild Card round against this new 6 seed. This round is now also a best-of-3 series. Other than that it's the same.
Yeah and there were only 2 divisions in each league back then and you needed to win your division to make the playoffs. There were multiple times back in that era when the team with the second best record in their league missed the playoffs because the best record was in their own division.

I would like to see all playoff teams face every other team in a 1 game playoff to start the playoffs, so essentially it's a 7 game series against 7 different teams for a team. Then in round 2, we have MAX a 2 game series matching the teams up by the best and worst record from that first round. So for example if Rays beat Boston in round 1 and get matched with them in rd. 2, and Rays win the first game of the two game series then Boston is eliminated. See I always wonder how a world series champion would have faired against another playoff teams that lost to someone else earlier in playoffs. To truly be the best, you should beat all the playoff teams. Love to hear your thoughts if you agree or not and why it wouldn't work if you disagree.
This is how I'd prefer the wild card game. The higher seed team can advance to the division series with one win. The lower seed team must win 2 consecutive games in order to advance the division series.
A seed is basically just a ranking system to determine who goes where in the playoff bracket. The 1st and 2nd seed teams skip the wildcard round and go right to the divisional series. The 3rd 4th 5th and 6th seeds go to the teams that will play in the wildcard round. 1st seed goes to the division winner with the best record in their respective league. This year it was the orioles in the AL and the braves in NL. The 2nd and 3rd seeds go to the remaining division winners in order of win/loss record. For this year in the AL that was Houston with the 2nd seed which also means they get a bye (meaning they skip the wildcard round) and the twins got the 3rd seed. It’s a little confusing because a team like the rays have a better record than both Houston and the twins but since they didn’t win their division they end up getting the 4th seed.
Would have been more helpful if you included the team names and not just their logos. Not everyone knows the team just from the logo. I got frustrated having to pause the video to search the internet trying to work out what teams some of the logos represent. gave up at the Wildcard screen.

And now, during this miserable lockout, BOTH sides want to continue to make things worse, going in the opposite direction of where they should go-1 divisional race per league, one LCS per league, one WS to determine world champion, with finishing in first a requirement in your division to make the postseason and the division winner with best overall league record going straight to the LCS. Never again will the game be as great as it once was, especially August-Sept. fever race baseball. This popcorn flash and bang of "More teams!!! More chances!!!" won't attract any more younger fans. It's an idea by old men who barely understand the game themselves anymore and why it's the greatest; they just understand that October TV ad revenue dollars are a lot more profitable. Nor do the players have any better understanding of their own sport's history. Sad. Googling Bob Costas's piece "Playoffs Even a Purist Could Love" from Sept. 21st, 2003 in the New York Times more thoroughly explains my point, which I can't hyperlink in for some reason.
MLB really needs to add rules to the Wild Card rules. One in particular: if the 4th place team has record that is better than X amount of games (like 5 games) over the 5th place team, there is no Wild Card game. A team could win 105 games in the season, and then face a 1 game elimination. Makes no sense.
@@oppenheimerfaaaaaan5547 Dodgers won 106 games, and played St Louis who only won 90 games; so the difference is 16 games. That is a huge difference. There should be a certain amount of max games difference that there wouldn't be a wild card game.

i have never understood why the MLB does the playoffs the way it does. the MLB should do exactly what the NBA does. a 16 team playoff with four rounds. seven games per round. it would create way more excitement and give average teams a chance to make a run at the world series. there would be way more opportunities for the players. can you imagine seeing more at bats, more game sevens, and more starts for pitchers? more clutch plays? more high stakes games? i understand that the season is a long, long grind. and expanding the playoffs would cause more injuries. for example, a team that makes the world series in a four round playoff could potentially play 162 regular season games plus 28 playoff games. but i'd much rather see more high stakes games, even if it means sacrificing some injuries. MLB needs to wake up and emulate the NBA... which has the most exciting playoff format in all of sports.

As a compromise, I propose a 12 team format with each league getting 6 teams with 3 division winners, and 3 wild card teams. First things first, under my format the wild card game would become the wild card series, it would be a best of 3 series, the 2 worst wild card teams would play each other in the wild card series, while the best wild card team and the division winner with the worst record will play each other in the best of 3 wild card series. The two best division winners will get a bye from the wild card series and face each other in the traditional best of five division series. The winner of the wild card series match up between the 2 worst wild card teams and the best wild card team and the division winner with the worst record will face off against each other in the best of five division series. Whoever wins that will face off against the winner between the the 2 best division winners in the tradition best of 7 league championship series and the winner will head off to the traditional best of 7 world series. The reason I think this format is better than the 16 team format is because it let's more average teams get in the playoffs while making sure, unlike the NBA that bad teams still don't get in.

The Wild Card game is only 1 game, so basically you're playing 162 games not even counting spring training then you become a Wild Card team now suddenly that 162 games you've put in is all just for this one game that could determine if you will take home the WS cup.
