I love Palki's way of journalism. She gave the profession a new dimension. She speaks crystal clear n pin pointedly. She also chooses unique topics and her topics exposes harsh reality.
In the US it started with Auto repairs and now with the "Great Reset", they know it alls want to just want people to rent everything and not owe a thing from home to autos to food for tomorrow's breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Palki makes some good points. The problem of repair of goods is complicated and there is no one simple answer. The progress of manufacturing methods and the rapidity of their implementation over the last 50 years have worked to make repair of products more difficult. Computer aided design and computer aided machine tools now make it possible to quickly produce products like molded plastic parts that are just strong enough for purpose. When they fail repairing them is difficult and often not worth the effort to repair. Compounding the problem is that changes in a product are often relatively easy to do so that keeping spare parts for products over several years old is prohibitive and keeping the tooling to make new spares isn't feasible. As Palki noted, electronic manufacturers have taken steps to make repair almost impossible. The new trick is that even if spare parts can be found they have been coded so that they will only work in the device they were in when they left the factory. E.g. you can take two new iphones and swap the batteries and neither will work. Generally the older a product is the easier it is to repair...if you can find spare parts. The new problem is that, for automobiles particularly, repair parts (especially Chinese made) are often so shoddy that care has to be taken to make sure they will actually fit and work. It seems the future just isn't what it used to be.
America use to be very different in the 60s 70s we didn't throw things away like today. The milkman use to delivery milk in glass jars then pick them up when they were empty.
This is the chemistry of business if they create quality products then how the industries will run . What Apple say it is attraction of his product .that is a business tactics nothing it .
I would imagine Steve Wozniack recently showing his support for the right to repair had something to with it- he's their respectable link to the past. A lot of Apple II computers from his time in the company 40 years ago are still working
Extremely important issue, especially to cut down waste and save the planet. Well presented by Palki. Sad thing is that our elected politicians represent interest of large companies and lobbyists rather than citizens.
Great to hear all these,I used to follow this in a small scale, preserved few things to use it as hobby..remembering Old is gold..hats off to bring back this system to the coming future!!
Why do they fail to last long? Answer is corporate business has to grow and for achieving that no one makes quality product that lasts for a life time.
Designed Obsolescence (DO) and Planned Obsolescence (PO) are not quite the same thing but have the same impact. DO is where components / software are known and guaranteed to fail within a known time scale. PO is where parts or software become unavailable so it is not possible to repair on failure. So for example with DO a washing machine main board having components that will only last 5 years +/-3 months. Where with PO the specialist parts e.g. the washing machine pump are no longer manufactured and unavailable after 5 years. This is done by manufactures as they continually want you to new buy the product in the future. Look at camera lenses. Those manufactured in 1980’s will last for 50 years plus, can be serviced by competent person. Modern camera lenses have recycle guidance of 10 years due to DO & PO. Dont buy new - simple.
Fixing things has been a compulsion, hobby and way of life all through my life from school days. It has been sad that these opportunities have been reducing with time. Of course I still rarely dispose anything till its last bit of workability is lost, at times fixing things even at a higher cost than a new one too. This would be such welcome shift to see happen within my life time. It was very heartening to even watch this video. Thank you for the hope.
Very true, right to repair should be introduced as an optional product during the purchase as a warranty. Not all customers can do it perfectly, for them service will be offered by company. This movement may bring down service charges laid by companies. Great content delivery.

It should be made compulsive to all manufacturers to make available all the parts of a machine gadget etc. Also the spares cannot be charged more than the actual price of the product..
*And let’s not forget exactly what will “accompany” our right to repair!!!* *These companies already know most of us have been bypassing them for years using 3rd party tools and accessories! Their only option is to give us the right to repair and provide us several “Apple certified” repair guides and parts - with Apple Certified PRICING - to match!*
I repaired my PCs multiple times. but as computer power upgrades keep coming and old OSs are no longer supported, and you need to buy new software for the new OS, even repairing doesn't last more than a few years. I finally got a large iMac, and right now the only thing I can do inside it is to add RAM (which isn't cheap), but is better at some things than any of my PCs. Planned obsolescence is real, but a song or photo I now can use wouldn't even fit on my first PCs hard drive. I hope this one will do what I want it to do (record and mix music) all last several years. Also, getting rid of old microcomputers is a polluting factor, considering the metals that are in it, and if you want your old data to be safe you must destroy it. Deleting or formatting don't do it.
Yes, we all are knowingly or unknowingly creating throw-away era. We used to have different repair tools at home earlier. But now, considering the cost of repair and the advantage of getting a new finished one by adding some more money, made us to buy new one. Thats the consumer culture .

Bought an HP tablet assuming that product will last for another 5 years, now within an year the company says that it cannot be repaired, you have to buy a new one, the product got obsolete
Recently, I have opted to repair the mic & speaker of my 5 yrs old Samsung phone from an authorized service center. I could able to do this at an affordable price, instead of even thinking about buying a new phone. Moreover, it somehow reduces the load of electronic waste generated every year.
I learned at a young age to fix my own car, to save money. 30 years has past, and my vehicles have never seen a garage for repair. Because of this, I repair everything myself. However yes, I totally agree. In the 90’s, you could buy a new printer with ink for $50. When the ink depleted, the ink cost you $100. I realized this would be a global problem, back then. People would just buy a new printer, when the ink ran out! Electric cars will be disposed like cellphones, because they are an extension of a cellphone. Let’s fight climate emergencies by making Space Travel, available to all. How much fuel does that space ship use, for that 15 minutes in space? But yet, people are excited about what’s around the corner. When you get older you realize, you don’t need all this shit. Nobody really cares, what new phone you have in your hand. Nobody really cares about you. You care about, what they think about you. Buy things you will use for a long time. Cause an old car, is like an old Dog. Your gonna miss it, when it’s gone. Old things, revive old memories. It’s enlightening to relive, those memories.
There was a scandal with a hp printer recently. This one was a scanner+printer device and it seems that you couldn't scan, if the printer ink ran out. HP was sued if I am not wrong. This kind of practice seem very common with the global players.

I love Palki's way of journalism. She gave the profession a new dimension. She speaks crystal clear n pin pointedly. She also chooses unique topics and her topics exposes harsh reality.
& most of the time it's hard to digest for some people.
@@Amit_Dammit1998 yeah u said it right. Long live Palki. Long live Wion.
From Consumerism to Recycling as part to respect Mother Nature!
Hello my friend I love watching your program
My father bought a 50 years old 'Singer' sewing machine in 1950, she used it for 50 years.. and passed it to others... Nothing to repair.. so solid !
Wow, wonderful analysis! Every other day, I buy a new set of products and within an year it becomes obsolete! 😲
I'm here for Ms. Palki throwing shade at China lols
Why do they fail to last long? Answer is corporate business has to grow and for achieving that no one makes quality product that lasts for a life time.
The Coase Conjecture
Exactly, we think on it always.
I am not seeing this anytime soon in India.
Samsung must be made to oblige to this concept
Very true, right to repair should be introduced as an optional product during the purchase as a warranty.
Not all customers can do it perfectly, for them service will be offered by company.
This movement may bring down service charges laid by companies.
Great content delivery.
Hi Palki you just topped all your great reporting. It is pertinent to making my life better. Really great report keep up the good work.
every time this lady opens her mouth she blows me off my feet !! i don't know what is more valuable, the person palki sharma or the information she imparts...
Always learned something here
Apple asked ₹40k for repairing iphone 11 rear glass frame just a month ago and to surprise more they told me that they were going to replace the phone. I did the job in the outside market for ₹8k. What a service !!!
How many computers have been sent to scrap because of Microsoft's updates? Louis Rossman of New York City
runs an independent repair company that services Apple products. He is waiting to get details on Apple's new
repair program to see how many tricks maybe be buried in the fine print.
Rossman has been active in promoting right to repair in the U.S.
How beautifully you are choosing the topic. Repairing a out of order gadget is a low profile thing. Going for new one is a symbol of social status and shows that a person has more money to spend.
Fascinating!!!!!!!!!! 120 years damn thats long time...... this lady is awesome she's educational sophisticated beautiful very good news journalist again better than any American news journalist rubbish I love how she words things I love this news journalist go INDIA 🇮🇳 GO INDIA 🇮🇳!!!!!!!!!! INDIA IS FOR ME SHE'S RIGHT Walmart is junk!!!!! I LOVE THIS LADY........ CYA 💜
Elegant dressing too. Nice presentation.
Right to repair, yes. Right to a long lasting product too!
I own a 2017 Peterbilt with a Paccar Engine in it. I can't get parts or service for it because you can only get them from the dealer. Ridiculous.
It should be made compulsive to all manufacturers to make available all the parts of a machine gadget etc. Also the spares cannot be charged more than the actual price of the product..
We the common man are not polluting the env...we are actually FORCED to DO it... unknowingly or knowingly
You studied in CU
Like the quote 'Obviously it was made in China'
*And let’s not forget exactly what will “accompany” our right to repair!!!*
*These companies already know most of us have been bypassing them for years using 3rd party tools and accessories! Their only option is to give us the right to repair and provide us several “Apple certified” repair guides and parts - with Apple Certified PRICING - to match!*
Planed obsolescence. Also lightbulb monopoly
Palki turned stand up comic with one liners like, " Obviously it wasn't made in China, in case you're wondering!"
I love this lady.
Sooo good! Such an important issue!
Profit is the main reason why big companies do this planned obsolescence. This is one reason why we have so much of electrical/ electronic waste.
Now this is amazing journalism! Hats off to you!
Brilliant
With all Due Respect, it's "Gravitas", and not "Garvitas".
Yes, we all are knowingly or unknowingly creating throw-away era. We used to have different repair tools at home earlier. But now, considering the cost of repair and the advantage of getting a new finished one by adding some more money, made us to buy new one. Thats the consumer culture .
Apple is like those Arab countries who recently legalized some basic human rights for women and non-Muslims, and the world praising them for being a bit progressive 😂
Bought an HP tablet assuming that product will last for another 5 years, now within an year the company says that it cannot be repaired, you have to buy a new one, the product got obsolete
This tendency to "throw away", try not to repair has creeped into our social behavior of not to fix our relations. So divorce are rising.
So i pay 1000$ for a phone and i am not supposed to open it??governments should fine those companies
Same applies to the automobile sector too
