I agree, people should have the right to repair because it's better for the environment and better for us and our way of fighting the sheer greed of technology conglomerates.
Right to repair is so important. Every town in the UK used to have a couple of shops that could repair a kettle, hair dryer, vacuum cleaner.... It's not just fixing something that doesn't need to go to landfill. These people understood how things worked.
Recycling doesnt mean anything it just gets shipped to developing countries such as those in Africa where they end up in gigantic electronic wastelands.
The old fashioned drip coffee machines lasted a lifetime unless you broke the glass pot. Enter the fancy single serving coffee machines which cost 5 to 10 times more depending on the model you buy and they need to be replaced every 2-5 years. Here is where you see the government’s hypocrisy: Most, if not all, of the pods used for these machines are not recyclable but we won’t worry about the environment. Instead, we’ll probably see a “non-recyclable goods” tax that’ll be passed on to consumers, which does absolutely nothing for the environment while making Canadians poorer.
Apple is one of the worst. New Macbooks have an angle sensor that detects when you open and close the lid so it knows to put the laptop to sleep. The problem is this angle sensor now has a serial number so that if it goes bad and you replace it, your entire laptop will not work. There is absolutely no reason for this sensor to have a serial number. Furthemore this sensor is in a spot where it easily can get water damaged.
The reality is that, when it comes to sophisticated electronics, they can't be repaired without very expensive sophisticate equipment We have a choice in many purchases, but you know very well that most computer based items limit private fixing.. Do you really believe that having the right to repair will help in this scenario? The vast majority of users don't want to repair their printers or phones or whatever. I applaud the exposure of the tactics by Hewlett Packard or Apple or any of car chip manufactures etc.. who are limiting life on real things or jacking the prices on replacements to maximize profit. Right to Repair makes sense , but Repair What? Personally, I like the ability to upgrade , it makes things more interesting , so enjoy the change, you sure as heck can't take it with you! Computer companies not upgrading their Bios so we have to discard and buy new.Boycott all companies that do this like Dell,Lennova, etc.they force us to discard and they are not fixable.
I've found it more cost effective to grab last gen, top tier 'k' binned cpu in price freefall than to grab an OEM pre-build. It tends to be fairly future proof as well, my mom is still using my old 4790k w/1650 super for gaming... It runs most AAA games smoothly @ 1080p.
All my old PCs still works and never throw em away, monitors that still works but old. A broken laptop, Salvaged and took its hard drive for a portable one! Keyboards as spare parts and so on.

It used to be 10 years they would keep parts in stock but now even one year is a long time for a company to have spare parts unless they are still making the same item with the same components. I have a bunch of Kenwood 2 way radios that need an upgrade kit, KDM-7, in order to add a DTMF keypad. Incredibly when they sold the radios this keypad did not come with them. It was an optional extra part and it needs two pieces that came in the little box the actual plastic 16 buttons that go on the outside of the radio case and a 16 pressure-sensitive pad PCB board that went inside the case and had a little film style pressure that just pushed into the connector inside the radio I was shocked that this kid did not come as part of the radios or just assembled together as the stock. The keypad can be disabled in the software so there was no reason not to have the keypad come installed from the factory. I don't know what they originally charged for this additional part but now that it's 30 years since they made the radio finding this part is impossible And anyone looking to buy a radio would buy a Chinese new radio for $40 So the cost to have a custom part printed and a new PCB board made would be the cost of buying 4 brand new radios It is so frustrating The company could easily make more of these at a small cost, maybe 2 or 3 dollars But many companies are not even in existence anymore, like RCI that was based in California and sold handheld two-way radios in stores like Walmart They began selling digital radios that could be programmed but then suddenly went out of business Obtaining parts or getting them fixed is impossible And then you have the companies that clean their technology is intellectual property and won't allow anyone to actually fix the products and apple is a good example of the company that really started this that apple and Tesla Sue anyone who attempts to fix their items that they bought like a smartphone or a car and the idea that you can't fix your own car is absolutely crazy
Products made in China still have to pass the corporate standards and are only as good as the OEM quality assurance at the end of the line. Many manufacturing facilities handle different companies products on the same floor, just on different lines.
What if the old items of electronic waste were kept and parts cataloged and used for the repair shops? The older items might not be in the new items, but its a start

there should be more ifixit like companies and maybe for the ones out there now there needs to be slightly more better qaulity control on parts due to ifix it in EU/UK.England being garbage tat being sold toi us lot in EU/England. ive ordered many iphone3gs battires and even an iphone10Screen just to find both itemes many times did not work at all. so ifixit in USA are not the same ifix it as in EU. someone needs to kick that iFixit EU/UK Sales ceo in tbh till they get better or stop sending unworking trash to EU/ england

The best Apple MacBook Pro of all time was the pre-Retina models, due to its repairability and upgradability.
