Everyone is talking about the 5 smart students from a graduating class that leave India, but no one is talking about the 50 smart students from that same batch who are still in India, but are unable to reach similar levels of "success". I am sure guys like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella had classmates with even more potential than them, but who never left India and are now working in a 12-hr desk job where the toxic Indian work culture is stifling their creativity and intelligence. We need to improve our home first and provide better opportunities to the smart folks still here instead of crying about those who have decided to leave.
@deepGamingAI agree that, back in india we had unstabilised system bcos of those 1k years of continuous invasions. So now, for almost everyone in india or other looted nations, earning is success. But, we all need to think - we have enough food grains in godowns, almost 95% get food, now what it means is we came out of that hunger, also moat people can get clothes, agree shelter still problem for many, so now atleast we can say we got better, n i think some more time, we can rebuild our NATURE INCLUSIVE socio & political & Economical SYSTEM - and not like DEBT RIDDEN/HIGH ENERGY CONSUMERS / INSENSITIVE TO NATURE COUNTRIES 🙏
My sister worked hard ,topped her boards and got into the best govt college to do MBBS. We are general merit students. She came Rank 5 in MD entrance exams (now it's called NEET ) despite this she couldn't secure the speciality of her choice because of the quota system .I understand the quota system but in medical specialy that is about saving lives ,you need to treat everyone as equal after passing MBBS. She was so furious that that despite studying so hard someone who was half as efficient walked away with the seat .We didn't have enough money to get her a private college seat .She studied hard cracked USMLE. She got into the best US hospitals and today is leading oncologist at California 's top hospital . I'm following her footsteps now . We didn't choose this for ourselves, we are forced to flee . If you wonder why the best doctors are sitting in USA and UK, this s the reason.Medical Toppers without rich parents and without quota for my super speciality have no future in India. We are values everywhere else. It hurts to stay away from our family but we have NO CHOICE !
Very unfortunate but true, but this no government can dare to touch, because it is vote Bank, initially set for 10 years, don't know how many times it would be renewed...
The Indian socialist society of 70 years of Democratic ruling gave India the gift of quotas and reservation system. It’s getting introduced in US too very soon.
As an American Prof of IT in the 90s and early 2000s, at least half of my graduate students were from India - highly motivated, determined to succeed. None of them wanted to remain in the US. They wanted to go back to India. After the year of practicum offered to them after they graduated, less than 10% did. When questioned, they listed what you have brought up. They talked about returning to India in the future once they had earned enough money, but none ever did.
That money earned will never be enough to return. Because India would have gotten equally expensive for their lifestyle. Also they would have their family kids in US and since they came abroad for education they would think that their kids will come too right. So the cycle continues and hence they might have continued.
I remember. Few decades back I was student of engineering in India. I was within top15% merit list . At the same time , another guy with 45% score was able to get admission in to same course as me. Why ? He happened to be born in specific caste. Job was reserved for him so when he eventually cleared BE after 6-7 years, he had government job. While other graduates, better than him, were still looking for job. I left India with 4 years of research experience and now working at organization that has engineering design center in India. Not everyone get lucky like me. If India wants to retain brains, 1) abolish reservations in education and jobs 2) reward merit 3) keep politics away from education 4) have national spirit among people of different states 5) encourage risk taking
How many times can I give a thumbs up for this comment? Finally.... I would like to add one thing, retain reservations for merit students who are from economically weaker sections, and Upgrade educational institutions and make them public not private. Padhega India tabhi badhega.
What is the reason for reservation ? 1. It is important for the specific caste to represent themselves in a society . 2. Specific caste might get the job but never get the equality in the social platform. 3. Specific caste should get reformed law by which they can come in upper cast and they must be accepted by society as well .. I bet you numbers are in millions. 4. Deep inside most of the people have discrimination elements ,it's a fact. 5. Lack of education was the only reason why they were kept doing small work(sweeper, Blacksmith, cleaner, cobbler, peasants etc) they have been exploited for a long time now they need education . 5. Fact : 100% of sweeper, cleaner and other dirty works come from specific cast ,you can check this fact by taking a small survey anytime anywhere in India . 6. Poverty is problem of government but discrimination is problem of society. 7. Specific caste have been a deprived group from education .. it's not a lottery ticket for getting job. 8. India is a very big country in which not only uppercast or privileged caste live .. but also others are there who have been exploited by upper cast who broke their backbone by keeping them to only small dirty works .. education was way too far from them . 9. Reservation is a secondary problem primary problem is discrimination. 10. Without reservation people may not be able to represent themselves in society and then like old time they will be limited to small work because you know everyone favour their community only and by this discrimination will increase. 11. No body is getting rich infact they just reach middle class or upper middle class. 12. Go and check work reports of specific caste employees in any sector they will be at their best with efficient contribution in their department and you will be surprised to see the data of corrupt employees taking bribe is rare most comes from upper caste . Brother you should see the big picture .. I also want that country should develop but development should be for each and every group or community. These decisions are guarded by supreme court and they know what will happen if they will take back reservation. Maybe you don't discriminate but that doesn't means everyone is like you .. discrimination is curse for the country and reservation is just it's effect .
There are questions for you,if you will help me to know . 1. Why most of the specific caste are afraid of getting their caste revealed in public .. why don't they show off like thakur, gujjar,Brahmin .. where is their confidence ? 2. Still there are places if you want to rent a room or house then you must be a upper cast .. why is it so ? 3. In a society you are treated a little different than people belonging to your own community .. why ? 4. No body talks about discrimination but everyone is standing against reservation .. pehle discrimination Aya ya reservation ? 5. How many inter caste marriage happens in this modern scenario .. why youth also goes for their caste for getting married if there is no discrimination ? 6. There are places where people avoid having water or food in a specific caste house .. and they say that we will get "asudh" or polluted if they do so .. if they accidentally get touched by a specific caste they will immediately wash hands or will take bath .. is it right ? 7. Reservation is provided for social upliftment .. so why it is seen as economic empowerment ? 8. 22.8 % of upper caste have 41 % of money of India and 16.6 % of specific caste only have 7-8% money of India .. what's does this indicate ? 9. 50% of population of upper caste belong to rich class .. 10 % of population of specific caste belong to rich class .. how come it's only 10 % if they get jobs and admissions so easily ? 10. Why still there are incidents of inhuman behaviour with specific caste all around the India in today's world ?
Han par ek cheez jarur hai ab 10% tak vary karta hai merit jahan pehle 30-40% tha .. and i promise aage aur kamm ho jaega aur sayad fir reservation ki jarurat hi na pade jb equality aa jaegi sb community ke approach aur vision me .. jaldi Aisa hona chahiye .. you were right padhega india tbhi badhega india and uske liye sabka ek level pe ana jaruri hai jo(upper caste) pehle se knowledge le rahein hain they know the importance of studies bs sbko(others) samjh aa jaye 👍😊
She's telling the truth. Most of my doctors and professors in University were Indian. Even my first employers were Indian brothers. I do notice that Indians in India praise monopolistic tendencies. Seems like India needs to create an environment for small businesses to thrive.
It's already happening we recently beat UK and took 3rd position after USA and china in number of unicorn companies and more are coming the main problem is because of overpopulation , caste based reservation system and ofcourse better salaries in west with every facility available on time and meeting with international community and doing lots of traveling .But now our government is trying to create as many industries in different fields as much as possible and reform our infrastructure.
@@Kalinga_yodha you can't conclude anything yet just because India was able to produce that many unicorns for one year. Sustaining the progress over the long term is needed more.
@Sangram Sarkar lol 🤣😂 just check the facts before saying anything we recently beat uk in unicorn if u can't believe a report which is not published in india then it's not my problem
@Sangram Sarkar hua hai jaa jake dekh le most unicorn likh ke dekh pata chal jayega WhatsApp par news padta hai kya jo itni important news ka pata nahi teko
Greetings from Everett Washington USA. Interesting topic, living here in the Seattle metro area. I've worked with many Indian Engineers, IT professionals, and Doctors etc. Indians are hard working people and they love India. I've asked them why they decided to move to the USA instead of staying in India. The responses I've received is that their skills are more valued in the United States, hence they get job offers with more money. Since they have desirable skills, they can find better opportunities here in the USA. Some have said that the quality of life is better for them here. Many Indian professionals have better access to other professionals who are educated and can network better something that I've heard said many times, that in India it's hard in some regions of the country for professionals to interact or not enough professionals to network etc.
India should thank the Brits for colonising them and teaching them English as these Indians would be nowhere if they didn't knew English to begin with.
*This is a very important topic which unfortunately is being neglected with a pseudo feeling of pride, we as Indians feel proud that a large proportions of scientists in NASA are Indians but we fail to recognize that not many scientists in ISRO are foreigners. We proudly rhetorically say that India was a bird of Gold but we as Indians want Government jobs to just warm the chairs, so many examples like these that a book may be written... Sad truth!*
Dear we general category people don't even dream about government jobs we only want equal opportunities in educational institutions which sadly we don't get. When our country is not able to provide us opportunities why should we sacrifice ourself in the name of patriotism?? It should be both ways na!!
Its China Fault! Its the Wuhan virus! Indian intelligent and logic at its best ! Its always someone fault. If I was a real talented Indian , I will stay away from this country as far-as possible.
As per NASA data only 8% of its employees are Asian American or Pacific Islanders. Not sure where you got this information of large proportion of scientists in NASA are Indians.
Its not only caste reservation. India also has gender reservations. Women are also getting reservations in many fields. Women have reservations even in buses and trains lol. Only general category men are suffering
Very well articulated and presented. This is Narendra Shukla from Sydney, Australia. I love India, and after working in India for close to a decade, it wasn’t an easy decision to make a move to Australia. For me, a few of the reasons as listed below, were major factors. -Equal opportunity -Feel valued and respected -Growth opportunities are not driven by who you know but what you can do and what you know - your real world capabilities. -Red tape: Employers in India still demand 10th 12th mark sheets- even if you have 15+ years of experience. Not sure what they achieve by doing so. I personally find this practice quite rudimentary, boring and annoying. -I’ve seen discriminatory job adverts. Such as candidates from IITs or IIMs only. Though, I’m not from any of these, I’ve led teams consisting of IITians. Developed countries offer opportunities based on merit/actual capabilities not based on where you come from. -No reservation. At least my kids can have an environment free of cast based reservation. I’m sure if not all, most of the immigrants consider at least some of these points before making a move.🙏
Wanna know if a country is a failed banana republic state, look for brain drain problem 😂😂😂😂 India is right at the top of the list, the best case study of a failed 3rd world country with an ego bigger than its stomach 😂😂😂😂
dude no offence I agree on everything u commented just one I disagree and that is caste reservation....do u know how many SC and obc are below poverty line....guess u don't know...maybe u r yourself one of us...but u think we lower caste enjoy equal respect...no dude we don't...we are black...we are ugly and that's why we are sometimes and often treated with hate and disgust....and till now lower caste like mine is still below poverty line...so caste reservation is needed.........after all our ancestors and even current generation suffer discrimination from brahmj.s and upper caste...though not all are like that
Points missed by Palki. 1. Political Structure of India 2. Systemwide Corruption Rate in India. 3. Caste based Reservation System. 4. Law & Order Situation in India. 5. Air, Water & Food Quality in Metro Cities. 6. World looking at India & Indians as just a Market and NOT A NATION.
Bro u r absolutely rit! But with all those above mentioned negative points, we will have so many INDIAN companies i coming decades..so wait for just one decade. We will surprise the world, bt to achieve this goal INDIA should have a strong central govt..If milijhuli Sarkar comes then it will reverse..
It’s horrible reporting, don’t check her dress , beauty and accent. Check her GUTS- she couldn’t call out #1 and only reason- caste based reservation. Lol. Caste system is adopted from British practices and specious thinking. We should unite as Hindus and leave behind a word ‘casta’ to Portuguese.
You must include Scientists and PhD holders in STEM subjects. Having been established myself abroad, I went back to India in 2018 for a permanent settlement. This was just to spend time with my parents. I went on job hunting everywhere in India for two years. In June 2019 I got a job with 30k@month, and after the first two months, I was asked to work for 10k@month. I left the job and asked for a Bank loan to start a small business. My 15-20 other NRI friends in India helped me with the capital after many banks refused. With whatever capital I had, a large portion went on satisfying local political parties, and state bureaucrats. I abandoned everything and came back with my parents in February 2020. Now leading a happy and stable life abroad with my parents.
Your situation is questioning me now,if I should go for PhD abroad,as no matter what, even I,ll have to come back to India as my dad got properties here and I am the only child...
sad truth . But those who want to stay don't pay bribe , instead are now reporting to CBI to trap these crooks. And you can also report directly to PMO via email or twitter with your complaint. It does work. As most folks are in hurry so they think they should bribe and so the corruption thrives. But your decision is understandable
I just graduated with a master's degree from a prominent university in the northeastern region of the United States. Mrs. Palki is not lying India's best and brightest, going to school and settling abroad permanently in the U.S. One-Third of my graduating class was of Asian-Indian descent; most of the students left with school honors.
@@lunafringe10 Hey, JuJu! A master's degree is a post-bachelors degree. In some cases, there are 4 phases of degrees for Arts & Sciences fields in the USA. First, an Associate's degree is what most students attain in community college, which takes 2-3 years. Second, and most common, is Bachelor's degree which takes 4-6 years. Third, a Master's degree takes 2-3 years. Finally, the Doctorate degree, Ph.D. takes 5-7 years. Sadly, education is a BIG BUSINESS in the USA! Individual students debt amongst students is in the trillions of currency, and there is NO ESCAPE from payments with interests!
American here, I used to work for an Indian company in the states and for a software company now with many Indians. Thank you for introducing me to your food, all have been good people glad to have them here.
Thank to ur government to providing opportunity for india immigrants worker also indian government dont know to priority valuable talented ppl inside their country that why india have high unemployment rate and collapsing economy
"Reservations at work place" and " Reservations in education" are not only catalysts but the very reason for brain drain. I wonder how did you missed it in your profound study.
Upper caste logo keh pass at least bahar desh jaa keh padhne keliye paisa hain. Jadatar Lower caste logo keh pass utna bhi nahi hain. Ager reservation nahi hoga toh woh aage padh hi nahi sakega. Ager sabko equal opportunity dena hain toh Sabko Equal facility bhi milna chahiye free of cost.

If we had gone full communist this would not have happened, we could have become as great as the USSR, but sadly just like in the USSR, corrupt "democratically" "elected" officials will ruin everything and try to select systems like capitalism which increase and help corruption.
Since my family moved to Arusha, Tanzania, from Italy in 1949, I have come into close contact with persons of Indian origin. I have found them to be generally very fine persons, worthy of trust and employment. Later, when we moved to South Africa, my positive opinion of them never changed. They will outperform other nations in the future, and deservedly so.
@@adeeb8682 Yes there is still the problem of the cast system, but to a lesser extent. One thing I have noticed with all human beings is that, if they are discriminated by "others", they tend to react in a positive way, by trying harder than the "well off", in order to achieve whatever they are capable of, and when moving to other countries, (often with only a small suitcase), dedicate all their energies available, in order to succeed and make their dreams come true. The children of wealthy people rarely understand the value of "earning" what you get, and this is what is happening in rich countries, which start going downhill. This is why I believe that India is in the up going stage. One has to be still a "dreamer" of better things, to put that extra effort to succeed
@@adeeb8682 Not in South Africa... Indians were dumped there by the British to be slaves with no way back to India. There was no hostilities against fellow Indians... It was a horrible thing done by the British that they don't acknowledge even today.
@@jn8922 Your knowledge of South Africa is limited or biased. The Indians were offered passages back to their country, but nearly all refused, because they were better off by remaining, and eventually created active communities like the town of Verulam in then Natal. So many went into trading and shops, raising the standards of their family. They later went to university, though initially separated, by the "Afrikaner" governments when I was there. Runga Naidoo was my accountant in the late '60s, and on weekends often used to visit us with his wife. A wonderful couple ! You should have met them "in" South Africa, before writing nonsense
Reservation and lack of opportunities, recognition are the main reasons. I know a friend who didn’t got in ISRO because of open category cutoff but managed to get into NASA after a year.
Exactly so, I knew someone from ...she went to premier institute iit delhi, but wasn't able to secure a job in india, she moved to USA and now is working with avomeen. She settled there permanently. This is actually the story. Quota reservations are there...and most importantly reservations through politics. I know people who failed classes in school now working in govt ranks...
I know a whole bunch of people from open category in my college who scrapped through under grad, didn’t improve their communication skills, didn’t get placed in campus, but left for the US, Australia and UK thanks to their bank balance. All settled there now, so moving to usa and working there not necessarily translates to having good skills. I believe the ones in India are equally skilled, look at the investments pouring into Indian start ups.
@@dudmatix has it ever occurred to you that it maybe because there is very few good jobs for the millions of us who are entering the job market every year and covid has just exacerbated that problem.
I am doing my Masters in a university in Germany and it's shocking to see out of 120 students 90 students are Indians. This is the level of migration happening from India. I know the reasons and completely agree with Ms. Palki. Indian Govt. has to do major reforms to stop young students from leaving the country.
Actually, India will never lack in number of brains no matter how many of them leave for other countries, but these brains deserves and need better system and better opportunities.

The people who are leaving are the ones who already have jobs. They got all the opportunities in the form of education, long training, job experience. No country wants plain graduates.
Growing up in India, I remember carrying a 50 rupee note every time I drove my bike because the local policeman always asked for a bribe even when I had a valid license and registration. I returned to India after living in the US for 10 years. Within 5 min after landing, a customs officer openly asked me for a bribe and harassed me until I gave up. Just last month, while my spouse was in the check in counter at the airport, the airline told us that all Indian visas were canceled and we need to reapply even though our visa was supposed to be active for 10 years. I gave up my Indian citizenship a few years ago and it was a bittersweet moment. I do want to contribute but I can't because India doesn't even allow for dual citizenship and screws me over every chance it gets. I'm not even allowed to apply for an OCI due to my job with the federal government. I hope and wish for a bright future for India but things have to change. Corruption is like cancer. It's killing India from the inside.
I agree with you brother. There is a lot of corruption here. People are insensitive to others problems. I'm kinda worried for my newborn daughter. I just wish she grows up well educated and moves to a better country where she is welcome.
I had been hearing about brain drain from India for the last fifty years. The media was complaining about it when unemployed College graduates of India were seeking to migrate to a country where they can get a job. The migration resulted in a stable and strong Indian community in US and Europe and they sent money back to India several times more than what the Govt. might have spent for their education in subsidies.
As an MBBS student, I can tell you this.... the Reservation system in medical sector, the quality of education and skills provided in all the medical colleges and the situation of resident doctors and their safety in India is enough to explain the brain drain. If you open any National news channel now, you'll see that there's 0 reporting about the current delay in NEET PG councelling, protests and harrassment of residents. Most public aren't even aware this is happening right now. Btw, this batch of residents are the "COVID warriors" that the govt. and media used for TRP.
Others ok excuse me reservation system? When u have money to pay for everything and have better education with all the support doin nathng but studies.. student like me who have to work and support family and study.. dont have anythng anyone to support us we only hav our education and scholarships.. reservations really gives chance for us to prove ourself either, its not simply served to us.. you think people who can buy seats are talented more talented than peoples like us who hard for studies? You are the kind of people who think mavali ka beta mavali hona chahiye.. sewage clean karne vale ke bete beti ko vahi kaam karna chahiye...? Because of your kind of mentality we are cornered many time saying what talent you have u are simply here because of your reservation? It does gave us chance to prove ourselves its simple as tht.. If you cant understand this simple thing.. society meh sabi keliye kuch acha karna chahthe ho ya particular group ke liye, like who is on the top let them on top? What govt is doin here they are cutting down all the opportunities we all have now.. Instead of focusing education good health developments they are simply doing what.. ? Aap log abi bhi reservation ko kosthe raho..
@@salups8284 bhai we genral candidates have no problem with the reservation for the EWS and the PWD but the problem starts when the SC/ST/OBC take up more than 50% seats out out of which 10-20% didnt have any problems with discrimination nor financial. Our simple point is why should we suffer for a thing which we didn't do. There are so many rich students who get seats easily just bcz they belong to some caste and then later on get monetary benefits too. U are just seeing ur situation. No one denies the fact that reservation should be financial based as the SCs who are poor will suffer discrimination and other hardships but what about the ones who are rich they dont live in places where they are discriminated they go to urban places where these things are almost dead. They study in the same coachings as the general candidates then how can u say they have any talent and calibre to share the same hostel room as the general who is paying much higher fees has lesser annual income work much much more harder than the other guy. No one is saying that people with ur situation dont deserve reservation but they are against the ones i described. 50% in IITs 64% NEET PG for the reserved caste. AIR 3 and AIR 2 in NEET PG arent getting branches of choices now tell me who is more talented than them.
She’s right, Indian immigrants in the US are very successful, at least in my experience. I think as a country India should focus on smaller businesses. Small/medium size businesses are the backbones for a healthy society
As an African, I watched the video and read through a lot of the comments and I can see we have similar challenges in Africa. Somebody should create Indian Diaspora Development Institute, create offices around the world, assemble Indian talents around the world and use blockchain technology to raise bond to develop infrastructures and create many smart cities in India. The development of India is going to be accelerated by Indian diaspora!!! The quota system needs to be dismantled.
A person from altogether a different continent knows what has to be done but Not our government 😐.... Thank you so much fellow human Indian government should take notes from you
The qota system is more like to equate india's population which has faced years of oppression and illiteracy thus can't perform. It's like reformed racism. The people who leave the country are upper caste rich ones who've had rich parents and got personal tutors, therefore they are talented. You need to understand india. Its much complex. Brain drain can be solved and more equity can be brought without scrapping qota but government doesn't want to do this.

It's quality of life because of the medieval colonization and looting of Asia and Africa that's why quality life gain some knowledge instead talking about quality life.Native Americans and Blacks don't have a quality life over there
Excellent piece. As someone who was born, raised and worked in India and loves her motherland, I can list (in no particular order) some of the reasons that motivated me as: 1) work life balance: working for 12 hours everyday is the expected thing to do in a lot of companies in India unlike lot of western countries where I may have to work more than 8-9 hours only occasionally. This leaves me more time with my loved ones and for myself 2) the corruption in India even at the grassroot level. Be it having to bribe the traffic cop even though my paper work is perfect or brining the government officials before building a new house even if the house plan meets all requirements. I can’t think of one place where I don’t have to grease palms despite of all the official requirements being met. This is nothing to do with any particular government 3) better infrastructure and facilities. Most of the taxes people pay in India goes directly to the pockets of politicians and common people don’t benefit much, be it hospitals, roads or other amenities 4) The Bollywood glam of NRI life did entice me a little before I moved abroad. They don’t show that people can live abroad and still be broke and not living in palatial buildings 5) some countries have excellent and accessible healthcare for free (govt funded) 6) The pay if definitely better especially when you convert into Indian currency 7) the reservation system in schools, colleges, workplaces, etc Some of these points may seem like trivial issues but for a lot of people it does get to you eventually

As per an iit professor, less than 5 percent from his college goes out of the country every year, but the impact they are able to create in a merit based society is much greater. We completely ignore the 95% who stay back and go into oblivion in the country because they are stuck in traffic everyday, fighting potholes or dont have energy left to contribute after paying 30-40% taxes in their bracket with no future security or benefits for healthcare and children education. Do we even notice the talent which is already there in the country, in your own office? We are still talking about having more reservations in private sector and in promotions in govt jobs in Supreme court dealings regardless of how it impacts the economy and the country. Good point, I wanted this video to deal deeper into the issue but ended up sounding alarm only, "loss of opportunities" the sweeping term to put the entire problem into doesn't disuss why there are lesser opportunities, I still don't regard india a developing country yet when 50 percent of workforce is employed in agriculture and most of the service sector is full of call centers like work, there is no place for a skilled person in an underdeveloped country.
I think most of them won't go abroad straight out of the college. They will work for 1-2 years and then leave for MS. So actual percentage might be higher. Also for iitians, the salary in India itself is very high.

Reservation is real. When a general person, as we call it here, scores 85% they are denied admission in good colleges, not top colleges but average good colleges. At the same time some SC/ST/OBC person who scored 60 to 70 % will get admission in the same or better college without even paying the full fees just because they belong to a particular tribe/caste or they are minority. This is applicable everywhere in our country, in schools and colleges where general public has to pay extra fees + donations to get a seat which their child deserves rightfully. In government sectors, business, hospitals etc. And how can we forget NEPOTISM. People here do not respect the skills and talent. They care about money.

Removing reservation, and that much weight into an exam only would help. Lots of the people who move out are really smart, middle class at least, didn't come in the top 0.1% of the exam. And it's easier to be accepted to a foreign University with a higher University rating than to get into a IIT/IISc.
It's not the Students/Employees who want to leave India. It's the country that forces us to go out. I left India back in 2019 and shifted to USA. I already refused many opportunities back in 2015, 2018 just because I want to be the part of the Indian economy. In 2018, my daughter who was 7 year old was eve teased by the colonies uncles in Delhi where I used to live. She was visiting nearby shop to buy Chips and Bread. Can you imagine? 7 year old girl eve teased by some bloody 40-50 year old uncles. Such a shame. I confronted them but they were so many and I was all alone. They complained to my Landlord and he gave us eviction notice after saying that "beti ko shaam ko bahar bhejte hi kyu ho, Yeh toh hoga hi" I complaint to Police. They came and they were drinking Chai with those uncles. Even I was taken to the police station because those uncle filed a false complaint against me that I eve teased their daughters. That i am mischievous and roam in balcony naked. I immediately left the place and shifted to some other society. Policeman took bribe of 15000 to dismiss my case. He also said to me "Ki ladte rehna case. Wife and beti ka bahar nikalna band karwa dunga". I am 39 year old grown man and not some 17 year old teenager who take decision without thinking twice. Me and my wife decided to leave India and I took that foreign opportunity and never regretted.
Indian nurses are the best. I’m a New Zealander and I always pray that God would send us Indian nurses to fill our job vacancies. They are smart, strong, reliable and awesome friends/colleagues. New Zealand is not a particularly wealthy western country, but our unions have fought hard for fair pay and conditions for our workers, which has made it a good place to live and raise a family. Now we are even attracting highly skilled American and British migrants because of our work conditions are a lot better than American ones, and because of our successful management of the pandemic. I hope that Indians can support their own workers unions to raise their society’s standards and expectations of workers pay and conditions, and make jobs more desirable for skilled workers to stay in.
@Voltar444 Starman445 that's the problem right there with Indians... They think being nurse is some kind of servant job... Maybe in India but in Western nations they are our heroes...
To be honest, I'd actually like to settle in the ANZ if I get the chance. Already decided though I'm only just starting college, and it's mainly because of many reasons others have already pointed out, some of which I'll mention: The caste-based reservations made me hate the system. Affirmative action is one thing but compromising on quality is a consequence. I can understand to an extent in engineering but letting subpar doctors into the workforce isn't great. It's because of that that I barely missed out on an IIT seat. Thank God for BITS Pilani and its pure-merit system that let me in. Apart from CSE and electrical branches, the other streams of engineering aren't appreciated as much. I love chemistry, so I chose Chemical Engineering, and job prospects are dim for us in the core branches. And I want to enter Academia, so I'd rather make it outside India than inside. I could go on for a lot longer, but not a lot of people read a reply within a comment. But if you're ever more curious you're welcome to ask more about it! It's a common mentality among most of us youth, and unless the government adds some incentives for us general category students to stick around we'll all just go someplace we're appreciated better.
@Voltar444 Starman445 how do you know that nurses are treated the same everywhere as they are in india? Stop embarassing yourself and concentrate on getting educated first. And what's with this white supremacy shit you are blabbering abt? What, did the indian society suddenly start giving the required respect to nurses? Stop watching porn and get off the internet for a while. You're humiliating our country.
Two big reasons that were not mentioned: 1. Work culture in India is stifling due to a combination of hierarchical mindset, political influence and corruption. 2. Weather and pollution. I believe this is an understated and underappreciated reason. Each time I go to India, I am struck by how hot and smoky most Indian cities are.
True, true and true. I worked in India briefly before immigrating. The “face time” requirement and recognition for seat warmers was stupid. Single guys had made the office their second home, having breakfast lunch snacks and also dinner at office! It didn’t matter if they were productive! Ridiculous office culture

Palki, your podcast on brain drain struck a chord with me. The Fiji Islands in the South Pacific had almost equal population of Indians and Indigenous people. After the military coup, staged primarily against Indians, 26,000 Indians of mainly the professional ilk left Fiji in the first year and the biggest beneficiaries were New Zealand, Australia, US and Canada. For a tiny island nation like Fiji, the loss of human capital was devastating to the economy, and took 30 years to recover. I was one of those , with 17 years of education including a University degree and 13 years of work experience , left Fiji reluctantly, and ended up with a better and well paying series of jobs in NZ. But the point is that if conditions at home are not safe or fair or promising then migration becomes an option.
There are multiple factors for "brain drain", 1st: Money (Salaries - India has very low per capita income) 2nd: Stability - job security & congenial work environment, 3rd: Political stability, 4th: General law & order, 5th: Environment & decent standard of living. 6th: Merit based recruitment, NOT reservations or cast allotment or quotas.. India has a long long way to go before people are given equal opportunity, not quota _(quotas are basically political appeasements for vote banks)_ based education or jobs etc...
South Korea is a great example of a country full of patriots who came together for the love of their nation to help build it and to make it what it is today
I believe brain drain in India is GOOD for the individuals because If a country can't serve it's talent and can't give them atleast basic appreciation or support That country doesn't deserve that Talent And It has nothing to do with patriotism Because When you work your Butt off And still a guy from some other state gets the seat with having less numbers than you because of some god damn reservation system That will be depressing

Aah... Finally someone is asking right questions. But I think Palki missed, maybe perhaps one of the biggest reason driving this brain drain, which is reservation in almost every field of study. Now "General" category is having minority seats. Irony is on one side we are trying to be world superpower, yet on other side we are still stuck with this ancient concept of "Reservation". Why? Because politics come first than everything else. Our politicians will never completely finish the issues like reservation, roads, infrastructure, quality of life, less pollution, because then what will they promise during next elections.
This is the most common excuse given by most people but the fact is those who goes outside too have to compete in private sectors that are open for all just like the private sectors of India....'Generals' and 'Reserve' are only good in government sectors but when these competent people can compete in the private sectors of the West, why can't they do the same living in India....

When 75% of the seats go to mandatory quotas, it really doesn't leave much of a option. Those you can afford it, go for study abroad. Others look for emigration options - Canada and Australia.
India has an education system like no other. Here, you are taught how to study the material thoroughly, the only problem is that we are not taught how to question what we read. This causes us to believe published research at face value, and have complete faith in our professors and the administration, even when they abuse us.
India lacks to choose talents Not 90%, 100% of talents who immigrated are general merit students. Reservation system suppresses the great talents hence they fly and grew.

Palki, I graduated with B.E. in Mechanical and decided in late 1960 not to go abroad. I searched for a job in Gujarat, but I could not find a respectful job for a long time, eventually, I found a job 100 miles away from my home, but during my interview, a general manager offer me a job with only a salary of Rs. 60 per month. I refused that job because the living cost was Rs. 300 a month in the area. After a couple of months a got job in Western Railway of India, Lower Parel Factory in Bombay (Mumbai) for Rs. 300. With the hope, that I will advance there, I decided to survive for a few months in the Bombay economy by supplementing the cost of leaving with my own family money. But, in the very first week, a production manager who was not an engineering college graduate told all new recruits that he did not need us because he was running that factory since the British Raj and not needed any innovation or changes. He told new recruits that we get lost in the factory wherever we like to kill time our time and peacefully collect our salaries. Then and then I felt, that I need not struggle and I planned to go abroad to the USA for higher education. In the 1070s, I got M.E. in Mechanical and followed by MS in Computer Science. I am now U citizen and living in the USA as a retired engineer. I agree with you that Indian businesses and Government have to change a lot to retain India’s brain.
Essentially it is not just Indians who are leaving. Qualified Iranians, Nigerians, Ghanians, Russians are all trying to enter the West a.k.a USA + Canada + EU + Aus. All the reasons that Palki mentions are valid, and brain drain will exist as long as there is some sort of differential: money, safety, professional growth, infrastructure etc. What was missed in this edition of Gravitas Plus is the number of people the West is willing to absorb from abroad per year. This is probably around 1 - 1.5 million per year combining all of the Western nations. If the Indian government wants to prevent brain drain, they need to close the gap between India and the West as fast as possible. This is a 20-30 year long-term project as the annual per capita income of India (PPP) is around 7500 $ whereas that of the USA is around 65000 $. The short-term way forward for Indian government is to build an institute of national importance in every district of India. As of 2021, there are just 161 institutes of national importance in India. They need to set up at least one institute of national importance in every district. This means around 750 odd institutes of national importance churning out at at least 4 lakh PhD graduates per year and 15 lakh master graduates per year. The effect of a brain drain is felt more significantly by a developing nation when the graduate generation capacity of developing nation

I am an Indian living in Dubai since last eight years. My initial plan was to return to India after few years when i got a job here in UAE. Now i seriously started thinking to migrate permanently to somewhere else. India has so much potential and still we choose to go backwards. I am from Kerala and it is considered as one of the best state in India and has similar HDI compared to many western countries. Eventhough many call it "gods own country", the visionless politicians and bureaucrats making it hell. Be it politics or religion people are becoming more and more intolerant. Politicians and bureaucrats are always in search of an opportunity to loot public money. We are not spending enough to build better qualiy infrastructure. It takes decades to build flyovers and roads. Political murders are common. Moral policing is another thing. Poor waste management, lack of industries and opportunities, alcohol and drug addiction etc are other key issues. Since our economy is heavily based on alochol, lottery and foreign remittance government is in huge debt. Due to the policies taken by communist government many industries are permanently closed or moved their production to other states. I can go on and on. Its getting worse day by day. I don't know why my earlier comment on brain drain as elaborated by Ms. Palki Sharma is not showing up. I recall that during my engineering college days a brilliant engineer from Canada took up Professorship. He was a great teacher and told me during my final year that if your brain is not drained it will be in the drain and asked me to migrate to gain recognition and due rewards. Like me, many in India did not heed such advice. Many did, some of them far less talented but almost all shone like shooting stars. They were obviously wiser and not foolish like so many nationalists like us who strongly believed of a great Indian dream coming true that only turned into a nightmare. We have a system geared to benefit the rulers and the persons who work for the rulers, to pillage and rob without remorse. This has been and continues to be in accordance with the system and culture established by the British, to serve their Kingdom. Calling our country as a democracy is a misnomer. It is truly a feudalistic democracy with a Government of the people, by some people for some people. The archaic and lackadaisical attitude of all arms of the Government is pathetic. So please don't blame intelligent people for running away. Laws to assist the downtrodden are misused by politicians, law enforcement agencies and administrators to serve their selfish ends, at the cost of talented and capable highly educated engineers, doctors and scientists. Of what use is there in lamenting brain drain and pushing more brains in Indian drains.
The reason why I left back in 2004 to USA is still same for Indians today immigrating to other countries.... caste based Reservation quotas and corruption at every level which bugs our day to day conviniences. On the forefront, this seems like a matter of pride for the Indian citizen, but in reality, we must realise that their successes in foreign countries is the ultimate proof of the worrying condition of India’s education system, and India in general.
True. Apart from what they've mentioned major reasons of why cream crowd is leaving India - 1. Corruption 2. Reservation in education system and government jobs 3. Payoff is low 4. Work-life balance almost doesn't exist in India
@@notfunny3468 caste system is gone but reservation still exists. Funny thing now sometimes I think certain castes are really above other castes. Funny thing right
Two big reasons that I can personally relate: 1. Currency exchange rates: a devalued currency gives less returns for the same amount of hard work done in India. Many countries that are way below in GDP when compared on purchasing power (PPP terms) are still ahead of India and are developed countries only because they can buy more from the income earned by similar amount of hardwork 2. System: bureaucracy, politics, religion and rigidness. All these things will make you feel helpless so many times, and it will make you feel so small that you will feel there is no justice and no accountability for all that you are doing for your country. (Example: I can't tell you number of times I was harassed by traffic police in Mumbai. Despite being a law-abiding citizen, they will find ways to harass you and try to extract money out of you that you will feel furious, but you won't be able to do anything. And this, this will make you feel so insignificant in hands of such a public servent. Similar experience with Police during Covid times.) I still think India is perfect when it comes to living conditions, weather and net produce. We are a victim of the environment we created ourselves.

Some points might be discussed before, just expressing my views on the possible causes: - Reservation system - Rat race competition (its not worth it, unnecessary stressing out) - The real reason for having entrance exams is : We just don't have enough good institutions for our massive population. So, instead of making entrance harder and competition tougher increase the number of quality institutions. Quality education should be a fundamental right irrespective of how smart or dumb you are, that decision should be is up to students to decide for themselves if they want to continue with their degree/institution or not. - Most Universities/colleges would have syllabus at par with global standards but the way of implementation (rote based exams, lack of good guidance for faculties which affects faculty quality) makes the degree unemployable. - People learn the skills on the job rather than during the Bachelors degree even if the degree specialization is relevant to their current job- it shows education system is designed to score in tests and assignments but not acquire skills.
at some point above i told major reason is throat cut competition for (IIT, GATE, NET), very limited number of seats, even after scoring 99 percentile staying in waiting list and rostering system in merit list. force the general merit students to look for better option.
Why reservation giving trouble? This is actually representation, inclusion, participation and diversity. You should appreciate it as 85 percent of aboriginal Indians are finally getting their fare share and disparity is reducing. India is not a place to mean everything for few castes who are historically privileged to get best of education.

buddy, the government and the system in India are corrupted in all sectors. That's the only reason why talented people are thrown away.
Report them to immigration.

Very well articulated and presented. This is Narendra Shukla from Sydney, Australia.
I love India, and after working in India for close to a decade, it wasn’t an easy decision to make a move to Australia. For me, a few of the reasons as listed below, were major factors.
-Equal opportunity
-Feel valued and respected
-Growth opportunities are not driven by who you know but what you can do and what you know - your real world capabilities.

@@rubudollo6524 If so called Upper class had that much money and power with unity, either it would have been migrated totally or it would have been ruling the country.
Equiality does not mean tending towards other extremity it literally mean treating people equally irrespective of there caste, creed or religion, and not privileging a set of people at the cost of capacity of capable.
The capable is just a proved capable without any label of categories.
And by the way there is a famous saw " There is no free lunch." It fits in the law of karma too.
So many years after reservation started it should be have been made void either by understanding it is not really fruitfull or by concluding that it was successful attempt.
Government do not give any kind of certificate course or diploma for cleaner and domestic workers .. brother brain drain se jyada apko manpower drain dikhega .. you know very well foreign countries me bht acha salary aur equal respect rehta hai har kaam ke liye .. humari country Aisa kaam bas lower caste hi milega .. manpower drain would be a 10 times more bigger problem .. desh chote kaam karne walon se hi Banta hai .. kyunki woh kaam har koi nahi kar sakta na jata hai .. dedo opportunity cleaners aur baki sbhi aise kaam walon ko .. then see .. jb baat kar rhe ho toh sb cheezon ki Karo 🙏😊

Most public aren't even aware this is happening right now. Btw, this batch of residents are the "COVID warriors" that the govt. and media used for TRP.

Excellent piece. As someone who was born, raised and worked in India and loves her motherland, I can list (in no
particular order) some of the reasons that motivated me as:
1) work life balance: working for 12 hours everyday is the expected thing to do in a lot of companies in India unlike lot of western countries where I may have to work more than 8-9 hours only occasionally. This leaves me more time with my loved ones and for myself
2) the corruption in India even at the grassroot level. Be it having to bribe the traffic cop even though my paper work is perfect or brining the government officials before building a new house even if the house plan meets all requirements. I can’t think of one place where I don’t have to grease palms despite of all the official requirements being met. This is nothing to do with any particular government
3) better infrastructure and facilities. Most of the taxes people pay in India goes directly to the pockets of politicians and common people don’t benefit much, be it hospitals, roads or other amenities
4) The Bollywood glam of NRI life did entice me a little before I moved abroad. They don’t show that people can live abroad and still be broke and not living in palatial buildings
5) some countries have excellent and accessible healthcare for free (govt funded)
6) The pay if definitely better especially when you convert into Indian currency
7) the reservation system in schools, colleges, workplaces, etc
Some of these points may seem like trivial issues but for a lot of people it does get to you eventually

Already decided though I'm only just starting college, and it's mainly because of many reasons others have already pointed out, some of which I'll mention:
The caste-based reservations made me hate the system.
@Voltar444 Starman445 you know how many medicos are being detained r8 now? They can't even sue rather are being sued...
New Zealand not wealthy ?
@Voltar444 Starman445 how do you know that nurses are treated the same everywhere as they are in india? Stop embarassing yourself and concentrate on getting educated first. And what's with this white supremacy shit you are blabbering abt? What, did the indian society suddenly start giving the required respect to nurses? Stop watching porn and get off the internet for a while. You're humiliating our country.
Two big reasons that were not mentioned:
1. Work culture in India is stifling due to a combination of hierarchical mindset, political influence and corruption.
2. Weather and pollution. I believe this is an understated and underappreciated reason. Each time I go to India, I am struck by how hot and smoky most Indian cities are.
Even the littering, poor city infrastructure and lack of cleanliness overall.
True, true and true. I worked in India briefly before immigrating. The “face time” requirement and recognition for seat warmers was stupid. Single guys had made the office their second home, having breakfast lunch snacks and also dinner at office! It didn’t matter if they were productive! Ridiculous office culture
And how cold western US, UK are! India is a hot country but it's not extreme like south africa as far as climate is concerned india is the best !

Same people who don't give a damn to anything in India.. Suddenly go to abroad and start following everything 😂
As a Filipino, we can relate to this Brain Drain Phenom.

Phillipines is a small nation where opportunities may be limited. I understand if Filipinos want to emigrate for better opportunities. But this shouldn't be happening in India.
Our failed govt policies regarding equality of status and opportunity has given rise to this trend.

But u can't relate to birth based reservations phenom
Most of them are Tamilians
There are multiple factors for "brain drain",
1st: Money (Salaries - India has very low per capita income)
2nd: Stability - job security & congenial work environment,
3rd: Political stability,
4th: General law & order,
5th: Environment & decent standard of living.
6th: Merit based recruitment, NOT reservations or cast allotment or quotas..
India has a long long way to go before people are given equal opportunity, not quota _(quotas are basically political appeasements for vote banks)_ based education or jobs etc...
Well said. My perspective is same
The main factor is reservation, no jobs and facilities for general category people.

Dear Palki, thanks for shedding light on this topic. Doctors aren't in the public?

I don't want to raise my future children there, period.
U don't have right to say that ..... Now a lot of things have changed in india ,u can see in future

Spot on Gravitas…a topic that needs to be addressed now…one important aspect of this global trend is that you need to discuss the dilemma of many Indians in the global stage - the dilemma known as the “provenance paradox”.
What does that mean? Provenance paradox?

This brain drain will keep going well on to next 100 years but I would hope and be pleasantly surprised if it ever changes...
Agree with you bro..but I m sure it will never change
@Tall Grass I am too an victim of reservation but country matters for me this is not a solution you guys are selfish , giving reason If one have a love for a country then he try to do very possible contribution for it rather leaving it

I live in Europe and, I am helping my friends to start companies in India with the knowledge and technology transfer from Europe. We NRI´s should help our friends and families to start creating businesses back at home by sharing our knowledge and expertise which would compensate and contribute to India´s economic growth.

Indian youth became tremendously successful in foreign lands and became CEOs of big corporations. On the forefront, this seems like a matter of pride for the Indian citizen, but in reality, we must realise that their successes in foreign countries is the ultimate proof of the worrying condition of India’s education system, and India in general.
True. Apart from what they've mentioned major reasons of why cream crowd is leaving India -
1. Corruption
2. Reservation in education system and government jobs
3. Payoff is low
4. Work-life balance almost doesn't exist in India
Caste system is ok but not reservation due to caste?
@@notfunny3468 : isn't discrimination on caste system banned according to law. Then why use this system to promote discrimination in education system
@@notfunny3468 caste system is gone but reservation still exists. Funny thing now sometimes I think certain castes are really above other castes. Funny thing right
Two big reasons that I can personally relate:
1. Currency exchange rates: a devalued currency gives less returns for the same amount of hard work done in India. Many countries that are way below in GDP when compared on purchasing power (PPP terms) are still ahead of India and are developed countries only because they can buy more from the income earned by similar amount of hardwork
Similar experience with Police during Covid times.)
I still think India is perfect when it comes to living conditions, weather and net produce. We are a victim of the environment we created ourselves.
Excellent informative presentation ! Only WION with Palki is able to accomplish this high level of reporting. Much appreciated.

Alas!! India has so many talent who never got oppotunity to excel their talent thier dream killed and their ambitions are downgraded, they never get opportunity to put their ideas on the table which causes them stress, depression, etc. and unltimately ends up in worst result.
I feel called out, I’m actually planning to do the same. The root cause of it all can’t be solved for another 50 or so years, I can’t blame the people for seeking a better life which the country doesn’t offer much

@@yangleezhao908 How many profiles are you running Abdul? 😂Certainly it's creating enough burn to you. There are 5 Million Indian expats which isn't 1% of Indian population. Your logic is stupid.
Some points might be discussed before, just expressing my views on the possible causes:
- Reservation system
- Rat race competition (its not worth it, unnecessary stressing out)
- The real reason for having entrance exams is : We just don't have enough good institutions for our massive population.
Rightly said. Population growth and mismatch in number of institutions..
This creates unnecessary competition
Very insightful and rightly said. Our entire education system is rotten. Gov't has no interest for Brains. Coz those with Brain don't Obey easily.
at some point above i told major reason is throat cut competition for (IIT, GATE, NET), very limited number of seats, even after scoring 99 percentile staying in waiting list and rostering system in merit list. force the general merit students to look for better option.
Why reservation giving trouble? This is actually representation, inclusion, participation and diversity. You should appreciate it as 85 percent of aboriginal Indians are finally getting their fare share and disparity is reducing. India is not a place to mean everything for few castes who are historically privileged to get best of education.
I think just overpopulation is the problem, just don't produce kids
