    I recently discovered your page because I am hoping to adopt when I have children. However, I was also homeschooled my whole life, and I believe that is the sole reason was I was so successful in higher education (I graduated with my Master's degree at 20). The flexibility and individual attention really allowed me to excel and I just wanted to say I love your page too! Hahah

    This was such good advise. My 13 year old daughter has been home schooling for the past 5 months since all schools in the UK closed. It’s been a shock to the system to say the least. My son attends an independent school which offers amazing alternative way of teaching children with additional needs and I was shocked to find how much more enjoyable it was to learn this way. I think all schools could take a leaf out of their book.

    Yes for the toddler bins! They don’t even have to fancy. I filled my kids with toilet paper tubes, little containers they could play with, beans or rice, magnets, popsicle sticks / anything! Love all your other advice too 😊

    Finally after 6 years the last year was my first letting go and enjoying home school and finding the true joy and just chilling out a bit. My kids are relaxed my teens are actually not fighting me to do schoolwork and thankfully my 1st grader is now old enough to focus and have fun and learn!!!

    Such good tips, Angela. I homeschooled for 15 years and am by no means a genius. I believe desire goes a long way and nobody cares more about your kids than you do. Of course, prayer is essential. Hang in there moms. You can do it.

    This spoke to me! I only have one child, she’s about to turn 2. I’ve looked at all these channels of moms who have full on “class” with these tiny children. I have tried it and I too am overwhelmed by my daughter’s lack of interest and ability to understand, stay put etc. Of course! Developmentally a 2 year old’s attention span is very short. But I agree, the feeling of comparison and also being realistic and not turning it into a stressful situation. Thank you. I feel so relieved and refreshed by hearing your perspective.

      People who direct their child's learning at age almost-2 are the ones who are missing the boat, not you... My son is also about to turn 2. There are many amazing Montessori and sensory activities we could do together. We do 1 every week or even less, when I feel like it! He's learning a ton just by playing, as the other commenter said!

    A good suggestion I heard recently about homecoming. Someone was worried about not knowing what they would be teaching their child. They said don't stress it if you don't know. Get your child and yall look it up together. Make it a team effort to look that problem or situation up. ❤

    • @lauryncrump8361
      @lauryncrump8361 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! My daughter and I do this. Teaches them humility! If mom or dad admit that they don't know everything (gasp!!) and aren't afraid to look something up, it shows the little people that it is 100% ok to not know everything. Plus, you can show different ways of looking things up!

    • @aglaurendance

      Lauryn Crump I distinctly remember one moment when I was in about third grade when my Dad told me that he and Mom couldn’t homeschool me and my younger brother. He picked me up from the extended day program at school and I was telling him about the dolphin unit we were doing in science (I lived very close to the beach in San Diego at the time) as we were walking to the car. He replied that he didn’t know enough about dolphins to possibly be able to teach me at home. While that might have been valid, the reality was actually that he was on active duty with the Navy and Mom worked full time as an accountant, so that is primarily why they couldn’t have. As a third grade teacher now, I don’t have a dolphin unit, but there’s definitely tons of things in the curriculum that I have to look up and my kids are fully aware of it and seem cool with it.

    Amen Angie!! You go Girl! You've so got this homeschool thing! I loved hearing your philosophy and managment of your homeschool unit.
    I homeschooled 2 out of 4 of my children through Jr and Sr High School. The other 2, I schooled kindergarten. (They're 10 yrs younger) We used a homeschool Co-op where once a week we'd go meet for classes. It was great! Also there are special event tickets for homeschooling students. You're doing great!

    • @erinaa9486

    • @modernhippie5281
      @modernhippie5281 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the option is extremely important. It was the same for me, my childhood dream was not having to go to school but learning what I was truly interested in. But that was not an option back then, and still isn't (Germany). Luckily, I now live somewhere where I can homeschool my own children.

    • @lisab.1559
      @lisab.1559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would move if I was told it's not allowed. Been homeschooling my brood of 6 for 12 years. My kids hated regular school. Oldest 2 went for a few years, homeschooling they loved once we began. My youngest never went to regular school and the mere thought of stepping into a school would freak them out.

If I try busy boxes, my kids doing school will want to play with those instead of doing school or the non-school kids will fight over the toys. My children have repeated the same lessons over the years, in history. I simply give the older kids deeper work, such as research papers or an appropriate book to read in addition to the lesson. Does that make sense?

    • @christiseverything8709
      @christiseverything8709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      History and Science are done in a 4 year cycle. You repeat the focus (american history, biology etc) every 4 years. Public schools do this as well.
      Teaching many ages at once you touch on the topics when they are young and go deeper into the subject matter as they get older. High school is often independent for them.
      I hope that makes sense?

    • @cynthiadeweese4116

      History and science are basically review each year all through school until high school. They don’t learn everything in say first grade and then it’s never introduced. Each time they learn about a topic they retain more of the information

    Hi Angela, I have been a long time watcher and subscriber. This is my first comment! What a great idea this community you are starting is! I was wondering if you need older (as in years homeschooling, not age ;)) homeschool moms to be a part of it? I kind of want to sign up, but not sure if I should. I don't really need much help, but would love to be a help to others. My oldest (18) just graduated this year. I also have a 16, 13, and 5 yr. old. I have homeschooled all of them from the beginning. I too was homeschooled for most of my education.

    As a teacher, I would say you're absolutely on point with not trying to be their teacher. Trying to teach the traditional way at home I think would be catastrophic and just create issues between parent and child. Teaching in the classroom is also moving more towards teachers being guides rather than the traditional teacher role. I've been out of the classroom since last November due to the birth of my first child, so I don't know what awaits when I go back in, and I'm both nervous and excited. I do live in Norway, so we have less of the virus at the moment, but that could change.

      Shannon Galloway See what's available in your state. In Ohio, we can get scholarship money for children with an IEP for a certain amount of money depending on diagnosis and needs. That money can be used by finding providers who are approved for the scholarship. These providers may include tutoring, various therapies, or both. You can also search for homeschool groups on FB on a national, state, and local level. Special needs homechool groups are on there, too. Some homeschool programs and curricula are geared toward children with special needs. Easy Peasy is a free online provider of courses. You can find many free printables and such online, too. Just put in what you want in a search and you will find. Also, you can ask any questions in homeschool groups as there many seasoned homeschoolers there.

      Find the best way in which they learn as you have more options than when you are just sitting in a classroom. For me when I was homeschooled I really struggle to visualise things and as I was doing science I learnt using lots of diagrams and videos because that meant I actually retained the knowledge. Khan academy is a really good free resource I found

    I’m really excited! My son is 18 months old right now and we’re paying off debt so we’re throwing aaaall extra money at that, but by the time I’m actually starting we should be able to join the group! It’s a very reasonable price and I really look forward to having it as a resource!!
