But we switched to Heart of Dakota this year and it has been a fantastic year. First, I always think you look so much like Scarlett Johansson. You're beautiful! Anyway, I appreciate your channel so much. We homeschool our 4 kids and love it. We recently lost our fifth daughter at 8 days old last Christmas to an extremely rare genetic disorder (Trisomy 22) that we didn't know she had until she was 7 days old. Her story has God's fingerprints all over it and we know that God is using our story for His glory - something good will come out of this. Now we have so much peace and joy as we are in the early stages of the adoption process. We know it probably won't be an easy journey, but there's a baby out there who needs us, and my heart was left with a hole where I need to love and nurture him or her. If I were to get pregnant again I would be a high-risk for uterine rupture because my last baby had to be delivered via classical incision c-section, and I don't think it's wise to put a baby or myself at that risk. Adoption is definitely birthed from loss, as you wisely say. In our case, that applies in more than one way. Your beautiful family is a tapestry woven together so intricately by the Lord, and it has been such a blessing to watch and learn from all you share with us. Thank you for doing what you do.

I started with cle math grade 1with my daughter and I love their spiral approach that she needs so much. Kindergarten in public school didn't prepare her for grade 1 cle so it was a little rocky at first but kept getting better and better. It introduces new concepts so gradual that it doesn't overwhelm her. After pouring over so many curriculum videos about math and English I finally feel I don't need to switch. At least for now. I wanted something more flashy but some people said it distracted them so that was the clincher. Plus I'm super confident she'll have no gaps even though it may be a little dull and not flashy or trendy. It's mostly independent which I wanted and price can't be beat even living in Canada. She did TGTB English gr 1 which was good but she excels in that area so we didn't finish it but went into CLE English grade 2 to challenge her more and she's doing well. I thought TGTB didn't go very deep and she'd finish in 2-5 min. I also started her in CLE reading gr 2 for fun and she enjoys it. Reading comprehension with wholesome stories. All this to say that I don't think people give it enough credit. I do give her incentives to do it without me nagging; no screen time or friends till I it's all finished. She just turned 7 and has 2weeks left of grade 1 math and she'll be all in grade 2. I'm going to keep going through the summer with math 2-3 days a week so she doesn't forget what she's learned. I think master books would be my choice for science and social but shipping is too much for me right now.

If you try to compare yourself to what the public schools are doing, you will sacrifice your children's childhood, for what? To keep up with some arbitrary schedule? You are qualified to get them ready for adulthood because you are an adult. Teach them what they actually need to know, and don't sacrifice their childhood for things they don't need.

I was very overwhelmed when I first started too! There are so many options out there! Do you have a local homeschool group? Ours has curriculum nights a couple times a year where everyone just brings all their curriculum and you can mingle and check it all out! My biggest piece of advice is just to try things and if they aren’t working, don’t feel bad switching. I am the type of person who likes to finish things and check things off lists, but if the curriculum isn’t serving your family well it’s not worth sticking it out. And the season of figuring things out will not last forever! We are going into our third year of homeschooling and we haven’t changed much at all from our second year to our third year. I am so thankful I tried so many things the first couple years! Kids are sponges and you will be shocked how much they are learning. My kids did well in public school, but they are thriving at home!! You will get there- just be gentle with yourself and stick it out!!!

As the summer gets here if you have time, I would love some tips as a seasoned mom on homeschooling on a budget. I don't want to compromise my kids' education but I can't go into debt to do it either. This is my first official year but I've been homeschooling for 2 years technically. Just not on record. But starting for real is a little intimidating.

The good and the beautiful offer so much of their material for free as a pdf download - if you purchase the curriculum already printed, they're not expensive either. The library is free, and so many things on teachers pay teachers are also free. There's a ton of stuff out there, keep looking on TH-cam!

Im would be super interested to see what a day looks like with your pre-schooler or younger kids homeschool curriculum/play. I have a almost 3 year old who is just about ready for a more structured day meaning she has liked the toddler “play school” activities we have done so far.
