Yes, indeed! Robert Smith's voice and lyrics give you the impression of an intimate conversation. One of my best friends just could not get how awkward his voice made him feel. He said he couldn't take it seriously. Which, I get. Not all music appeals to everyone. But just, damn. That's too bad. There's a lot of catharsis in those lyrics.

This is the purest, most straightforward love song. The writer/singer married his childhood girlfriend and they're still together getting old. You can see them dancing together in the video for Just Like Heaven - they're ridiculously adorable.

As a 44 year old man who is still best friends with the girl he fell in love with when he was 12, I'm pretty sure this is simply a love song and he's just explaining how he feels about that person. I don't think it's any more complicated than that :)

After she passed- I couldn't listen to this song without crying instantly!!!....NEVER take 1 second of real, true- unconditional love for granted !!! ...cuz it may never enter your heart but only for a brief moment ...for me, back in 1991...never since.

@Winston Smith 84 big facts!! Sometimes you catch glimpses of how much Lex loves Brad in just a quick look she gives him and sometimes it's more overt.
I really hope Brad realizes this. I can't see how he couldn't. I just think he keeps his emotions very close to the vest. 💞
@Chaotic Embrace I am so sorry you lost your soulmate but I'm sure you wouldn't have wanted to miss a moment of it even had you known how it would turn out.

The Cure are legends. One of the pioneers of alt rock to bring it into the mainstream. Gothic, post punk.
This is '80s/'90s alternative music. Late new wave (late '80s/early '90s) on the dark wave spectrum. Guitars, synthesizers, etc. They have tons of great music and videos. Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. "A Forest" and "Pictures of You" are their next songs for you to listen to! Oh Brad, you have a sweet, pretty lady there...give her a kiss!
Ok, kids. It is now time for yall to check out similar bands from that same era like Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Joy Division, Love and Rockets, The Psychedelic Furs, etc.

Agreed! More Joy Division, some Gang Of Four, more New Order, try The Sound, more Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins and LEGIT Post Punk bands would be so damn sweet as well. As well as more Black Flag, at least one Jesus and Mary Chain (who even the Pixies covered one of their songs) , Husker Du, Pulp "Common People", Killing Joke "EIGHTIES" straight classic, Blitz "New Age" and especially post Deep Wound band mid 80's starting legends DINOSAUR Jr "Freak Scene", "The Wagon" OR "Feel the Pain" would be great. I have a feeling Brad would enjoy Dinosaur Jr., since they're in the same era, realm and even state as Pixies. Come on #couchgang. Unite! So many musical treasures left. The Cure "Lovesong" was a top ten hit in 1989. It's one of my favorite songs by them. It always takes me back to the late 80's. So nostalgia pop, maybe? (grin). I've heard this playing through the instore sound system at Wal-Greens. Muzak means arrival, maybe? The Cure were mainstays of college radio in the early to mid 80's and alternative rock radio in the mid to late 80's. When you're ready for more from The Cure, check out some of these songs: "Close to Me", "In Between Days", "Let's Go to Bed", "The Love Cats", and "A Forest" along with many others.

I feel that what this song is really talking about is a person who loves someone else so much, that even if there comes a time where they are no longer together, for whatever reason, and whatever words are exchanged.... they will always want the best for the other person.
That's the type of love I feel most people strive for.... near or far, together or apart, forever or never again, that love will remain.

I think Lex and Brad will love them, especially Siouxsie and the Banshees! Songs like "Spellbound", "Hong Kong Garden". Gothic post punk. They keep coming up short on the various polls they have. Should finally win finally, especially another '80s Alternative stream. Or react offstream or headline a stream. They are gettin there! Brad will like Siouxsee's voice (female) and Lex will, too more she'll really dig their upbeat, danceable eerie music. lol

The Cure are awesome - got to see them live in Charlotte, NC. Of course when they played "Charlotte Sometimes" (great song), the crowd reacted as if Robert Smith (lead singer and guitarist - and writer) had written it about the city, not about a woman.
They have so many amazing songs (one of my favorites is the haunting "A Forest" - sort of hard to find). If you really want to hear a contrarian song by them, try "Lullaby" - not what you think.
They, along with The Smiths, Joy Division (and later New Order), and - more into Goth, Bauhaus - really summed up the 80s Prog-Rock.
But I would also suggest Siouxsie & The Banshees, for whom Smith played lead guitar when The Cure opened for Siouxsie Sioux. Peek-A-Boo, Kiss Them for Me, Spellbound, Cities in the Dust - all great stuff.
Keep exploring - there's a world of amazing music out there!
