After watching their 2003 Trilogy shows on Blu-Ray (three full albums in sequence: Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers), I remember thinking if ever saw the Cure live, I could probably die happy if they opened with "Plainsong." Fast forward to 2016, and I saw them live, and to my eternal joy they opened with "Plainsong" (no guarantee on that tour, as they often opened with "Shake Dog Shake" or "Tape"), and the second song they played was... "Pictures of You." They played thirty-four songs (three encores!) that afternoon/evening.
Absolute masterpiece, they played it, in its entirety plus some other tracks like push and esten at the Sydney Opera house to mark the 30th anniversary. Songs like homesick and Plainsong were so beautiful.
Certainly one of the songs, and one of the groups, that absolutely defined '80s music. The Cure were terrific and their sound was part of the soundtrack of the '80s.
Cool fact about Robert Smith (lead singer) - he met his wife when he was 14 and they’ve been devoted to each other ever since. He’s creepy to look at because it’s his stage persona but his love for his wife is truly touching
Yes, I agree with Lex; ethereal, wistful, melancholy, sweet sadness, transported away....but in the end Robert Smith is going to give you a very gentle kiss on the forehead saying it's all gonna be ok.
I got see the Cure twice in concert 1st time in the late 80s and the in 90s. And seeing Robert Smith play lead guitar for Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1983
The Cure.... didn't appreciate their sound in the 80s..... but.... as I grew older, as I'm now 55, they really were unique and absolutely had many great tunes.
Yeah I hated em as a mid 90s teen that only liked rap and classic rock… once I hit my 30s I couldn’t not love a ton of Cure songs. The writing is too good.
Same. I was young and dumb and was "too cool" to listen to them because I was trying to associate my dumb-ass middle school/early high school persona to harder music! Also, Love Song would come on every morning followed by Personal Jesus by Depeche mode on the school bus when I was half asleep and hungry and thought that was the only song they had. Fortunately, it only took a few years to fall in love with them and also see them live.
There is an 8 minute long version of this song which I personally think is the definitive version. Lex is absolutely right though. This song isn't sad to me, despite the subject matter. It fills me with hope too, it's pure, wistful remembrance of love lost. It's beautiful and fragile but ultimately comforting in a very odd way. It's simply a song that speaks to me. I go though phases of loving different songs but Pictures of You has never been far from my heart. If there's one last song I ever hear in my life this would be the one I want to go out on. Just perfection.
I remember in '89 I got this album and sat through the entire production. I couldn't stop after the first tracks. I was mesmerized by its utter genius. 'Disintegration' is just one of those landmark albums that help define an Era in music.
Have loved The Cure through their many lineup changes since their Early Cure Elvis Costello inspired post punk, through to the darker sounds of Pornography, Robert's solo venture with Steve Severin..The Glove( worth checking out) , the psychedelic fun of The Walk , to mid eighties Head On The Door... Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, and of course Disintegration...I loved the Mix recordings of early nineties, to Blood Flowers, Co- labs with Gorillaz and Chvrches..Robert, his looks( which have gone through changes) and his voice( never changes) are the thread that has kept The Cure together and no doubt Robert and the rest of the band will deliver on these two new albums to come! Glasgow Barrowlands 1984, featured Andy Anderson on drums my all time favourite concert...Though I did love them at Sydney Opera House , Pinkpop in Germany and Glastonbury 2019.. I'm now 59 and Im still telling people I'm not a Goth, never been one... I'm a Cure fan!
Robert Smith, (lead vocal), the original shoe gazer. He has penned some beautiful songs, noteabley, Lovesong which was a wedding gift to his wife. Still married after 34 years. More Cure please, they're a magnificent band 💜
One of the best, influential alternative, indie, post-punk, new wave (darkwave/gothic) bands, kind of shoegazy/ethereal/psychedelic, too that came around late '70s. Gained mainstream during the '80s and '90s. Lex is spot on as well. Check out more of The Cure! Also take a deep dive into similar goth bands to them like Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, Sioxsee and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Church, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others.
Hey, there are not a lot of people reacting to this kind of thing, hell, not a lot of people even know what this kind of music is nowadays. Thank you for this. Old 80's Goths salute you.
One of my favorite bands from my high school days. School dances were epic with this sound. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "The Forest", or "Let's Go To Bed" Yes, they can sound sad, or disillusioned.... but to twist a quote from a movie, "What is grief, except love persevering.."
The feeling of this song is the feeling of the best and saddest and most amazing parts of my youth. This is the perfect song for laying in the dark with your eyes closed and just letting the beauty of the music wash over you.
Every time I here The Cure it reminds me of my teenage years visiting Ireland, they were massive their. As am Irish Mancunian they had the same beautiful haunting guitar strings as The Smiths.
A longstay of the british indie band scene starting late 70s and developed more mainstream as 80s progressed. Robert Smith still going strong. Seen them live several times in the 80s Glastonbury to a live concert in France. Like The Smiths wrote catchy melancholy songs. Always loved this and that great intro. A typical product of the early UK Indie scene. Indeed this has been used in several movies. I think notably in a John Hughes 90s movie, The Vow, but recently Mr robot.
I discovered The Cure in the late 80s. This song was a sad love song, creative and haunting. Their music covers a broad spectrum of sounds yet the common denominator is the originality. My husband and I were in the early years of our marriage and Love Song was a favorite too, of course. We lost our first born shortly before her 2nd birthday. A beautiful little spirit with huge eyes whom everyone who met her said she looked like a doll. She did. This song took on a new meaning after she passed. Plain Song is another. But the fact that one can feel their songs on various levels is part of their talent. They paved the way for others, Green Day comes to mind. So lovely seeing you both react. Thank you for sharing! 😽💋🎶
HP used this song in one of their commercials in the mid 2000's I believe. Always love the Cure. Robert Smith's voice is another instrument in the band. So intoxicating. ✌️
This song was part of the soundtrack to the late 1980s. Appearing in movies and across the media spectrum, it's possibly The Cure's best-known track. Great song!
The Caterpillar, Love Cats, Lullaby, A Forest, 10:15 Saturday Night, Charlotte Sometimes, The Blood, Close to Me, the list goes on and on, The Cure have so many good songs.
Y'all need to watch the fantastic movie Sing Street. Set in the 1980s, it's about a young Irish boy who starts a band to impress a girl and escape his troubles, of which he has many. Of note, the film introduces the concept of "happy sad," and the music of the Cure is given as a definitive example. So you're both right on this one. Much of the Cure's catalog is a unique blend of hopefulness and melancholy. Tip: If you watch the movie, turn your subtitles on. Some of the Irish accents are think enough that it's easy to miss a few lines. SO worth it, though!
Now you’re in my genre! The Cure is an excellent rabbit hole to go down! One of the forefathers of goth rock music. Robert Smith with his deliciously smeared lip stick. They are recent inductees into the Rock Hall of Fame and they earned their place! Charlotte Sometimes is my personal favorite.
Johnny Marr said this in an interview last year (talking about how he watched them live early in their career): ""I mean Robert's got it in his voice, his guitar playing... I saw The Cure early gigs, his voice was beautiful, his face was beautiful, his guitar playing."
I loved The Cure when I was in high school. This was one of my favorite songs by them. They have so many great songs. One of the only albums that I could play every song and enjoy. This was my bedtime music. LOL
If I'm recalling correctly, this song was written after a fire destroyed Robert and his wife's house and he was lamenting about all the pictures that were destroyed in the fire... Speaking of fire, you should check out their song "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack Also, Robert and his wife are STILL married... lifelong romance in real life
That makes sense because he has like a longing to his voice in this. Like he's really heartbreaking. That's how it makes me feel. It tugs at my heart!😢
The Cure tends to write songs using a minor modality of a major key. This creates a vibe that is melancholy yet hopeful. Robert is singing about the grief of loss, but it's not a pit of despair. Both the words and music have a certain joy in remembering the happy moments together.
I understand the "hopeful" vibe, for me it was always accepting coming to terms with your sadness , being good with the realization that the pain never goes away.
This song is brilliant and beautiful. It's also to me more about loss. It could be death it could be an old friendship or an old love that you reminisce about- maybe the dude got dumped like you said Brad - but over time you often forget the specifics and zone in on the vibe which this song is all about. It's just a deep resonant melancholia about how hard it is to keep love alive. It's a goodbye kiss to the dearly departed -alive or dead.
The Cure are an incredible band with a great back catalogue of music and one of the bands that sound better live than the studio versions of their music
These guys pioneered mope rock and were part of the soundtrack to my college years. When I first discovered ‘college radio’ they were one of the groups that set the stage.
The amount of amazing songs and albuns from the Cure is ridiculous. Everything they did until 92 is almost perfect. We're talking about 9 original albuns straight! I know is subjective still I don't know other band that did the same. Even the Paris live record from 93 is one of the best live recordings ever, imho.
Now you're in the good stuff. Believe it or not that's a shortened version. It has such a hypnotic, mantra-like quality I can listen to it for hours (OK lots of minutes) without getting bored. Yes very positive sound, I completely agree.
Robert Smith is one of the greatest song smiths on the planet. All the nuance, great lyrics and on and on. And a wonderful and witty guy. React to Friday I am in Love. Iconic! Art!!
The one Cure song that kills me to listen to. I have reasons. It one of their most beautiful songs and I'm sure it's another 🤘🏻❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥 reaction. Love to y'all as always.
I know we say this about so many bands, and the unthinkable list of bands and songs we INSIST you listen to, but yeah. REM-U2-CURE-SMITHS-POLICE-DEPECHE MODE-TEARS FOR FEARS-CLASH ... thats pretty much the 80's (and some of them into the 90's and today) bands that had ALBUMS more than just songs. You can go down a rabbit hole with this band.
Great Alternative New Wave band if not the Best of the second Wave of the British Invasion. Incredible writing and the Mood of their sound, second to none!
The Cure is a deep rabbit hole. Huge catalog too, with seemingly infinite remixes. Check out “Close to Me”. Original from “The Head On the Door”, or the one from “Mixed-Up”.
Wife here..Amazing 80's song/band...I would definitely consider The Cure grandfather's of Alternative Rock..One of the best!!.Taking me Way Back!!..Yea Brad.,.I think he's wishing he had done something different..a regretful tone and vibe!!
Since Brad loves Weezer so much, check out the Flamin' Groovies. They started late '60s playing bluesy garage rock, proto-punk type of stuff, which is phenomenal. Songs like Heading for the Texas Border still slap hard. Their first album without the original lead singer, Shake Some Action, takes a turn to a more beat driven pop sound. I bet the guys from Weezer listened to that album a lot. Check out the title song off that album, it's a timeless classic.
Maybe the best live band I've ever seen. Consistently better live. I saw them play in Denver in support of this album and every song seemed perfect. The played a long show, but still included a medley do to having a big catalog. It takes dedication to accomplish that - you have to play those songs over and over together to become that in sync. They have such a unique sound - his vocals are very distinct, but i can always tell a The Cure song just from the music.
Thanks - I forgot about this one. You might want to try 'HOW SOON IS NOW?' by The Smiths. They never could reproduce that wild guitar riff Live in-concert, so use the official video, and/or studio album cut.
The Cure are such a vibe & the Disintegration Album in particular is a portal 2ur soul, the musicianship & lyrics will numb ur mind in the best of ways....#PUREGENIOUS
The Cure are fantastic and timeless. this is my favorite song of theirs. The lyrics to this song are absolute poetry. It's not about him being dumped though, I don't believe. Remembering you, fallen into my arms Crying for the death of your heart You were stone white, so delicate Lost in the cold You were always so lost in the dark Remembering you how you used to be Slow drowned, you were angels So much more than everything Hold for the last time then slip away quietly Open my eyes, but I never see anything Robert Smith is also underrated as a guitarist
Oh, I just thought that "Lullaby" would be an awesome song for reactions. Also, Lex is spot on. Hopeful-sounding music. In 1987 I met the Cure and told Robert Smith that their music cheered me up after being in the hospital from a devastating car accident. We hugged and he laughed and said something like "Cheered you up?" But it's the truth. I spent six months at home in a body cast and their music took me through many emotions. "Give Me It" was my anger and frustration song, and "Sinking" (a beautiful song) can make me weep. But it was cathartic and just kept me sane lying in that bed. Easily one of my favorite bands.
The song has been used numerous times in movies and television including One Tree Hill, The Vow, Misfits, The Goldbergs, Gilmore Girls and The Politician.
thanks Brad and Lex for your great reaction as always. Two soulmates for sure. God bless you both.. We all know that Lex is an 80s kid...What about it Brad...where does your soul belong??. Thanks to both of you again. Stay safe
Me my partner and my Dad Saw THE CURE a cupple of years ago here in Aotearoa new zealand 3 hour's of being CURED WICKEDLY AWESOME 👍 I've been listening to THE CURE since i was 10 year's old 1980 when Dad brought THREE IMAGINARY BOY'S and too see them with dad 72 and me 50 year's old was a really cool experience me and dad have been to dozens and dozens of concerts over the years together Definitely the highlight of gigs with Dad was just before i turned 13 1983 DAVID BOWIEs SERIOUS MOONLIGHT TOUR for the LET'S DANCE album at WESTERN SPRINGS STADIUM auckland. IT'S still to this day the largest crowd of people in one place at the same time in Aotearoa new zealand 39 year's later R.I.P DAVID BOWIE you GENIUS
Disintegration is an absolutely perfect album. There is not a single bad song on it.
Couldn't agreed more👌🏻

What a phenomenal song and what a phenomenal album. Robert Smith is such an incredible talent.
A perfect flowing album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed
Both true , but can he at some point change his look.😂
cool story
The Cure ? Fantastic band, i just love their music. Greets from germany. 👉😍👈
Certainly one of the songs, and one of the groups, that absolutely defined '80s music. The Cure were terrific and their sound was part of the soundtrack of the '80s.

Not one Cure fan has ever said “he is creepy to look at” . Jus sayin
@@musik_non_stop I was thinking WFT, Creepy but loves his wife, most un-creepy look IMHO.
Yes, I agree with Lex; ethereal, wistful, melancholy, sweet sadness, transported away....but in the end Robert Smith is going to give you a very gentle kiss on the forehead saying it's all gonna be ok.
Robert Smith is one of the best romantic lyricist and singers of the 80's and beyond.
My favorite band of all time, I have seen them live 18 times.
Once for me in the late '80s. Gothic Beauty!
LUCKY GIRL ❤🇭🇺
one of the best intros ever. one of the best songs ever. best heartbroken song ever.
I got see the Cure twice in concert 1st time in the late 80s and the in 90s. And seeing Robert Smith play lead guitar for Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1983
The Cure has always been there for me during the hardest times of my life.
This! Truly, so many times I'd have ended in deeper darker holes if it hadn't have been for Robert and the boys...
Amen. The cure is like that hug that you don't want but you know you need while your world is breaking apart. I took great comfort from this music.
The Cure, Depeche Mode, and the Cranberries.
Well when you feel down, beaten, nearly defeated...they are The Cure. 😉🤙
This sound is like a warm blanket in winter. Sad but comforting!
This band is magic, so unique.
Oh this was my jam in 1989, I was 13 years old
The Cure.... didn't appreciate their sound in the 80s..... but.... as I grew older, as I'm now 55, they really were unique and absolutely had many great tunes.
I feel exactly the same way.
Same here. I didn't have a mature enough musical ear to appreciate them as a kid, but now they're one of my all time favourite bands.
I agree 100%
Yeah I hated em as a mid 90s teen that only liked rap and classic rock… once I hit my 30s I couldn’t not love a ton of Cure songs. The writing is too good.

Robert Smith an absolute genius 👏👏I remember fondly listening to them in the early 80's in my bedsit in Bristol stoned👍epic days👏👏👏👏
As soon as I saw the cover of their debut album I was a fan. And then of course that voice, and that guitar sound.
The feeling of this song is the feeling of the best and saddest and most amazing parts of my youth. This is the perfect song for laying in the dark with your eyes closed and just letting the beauty of the music wash over you.

This is the video edit version of the song. The album cut lasting 7 minutes 28 with the long intro builds the song to another level imo.

Death Cab For Cutie managed to capture some of this sound imo, in their Transatlanticism era. Not sure if you've covered them yet.
great album Pictures Of You!
A song that typifies the early to mid 80's from The Cure is 'Primary', even though it came out in 1979...I believe...maybe 1980.
Reminds me of my student days. Hearing this makes me feel young again. Loved The Cure then. This song always touches my heart strings.
If I'm recalling correctly, this song was written after a fire destroyed Robert and his wife's house and he was lamenting about all the pictures that were destroyed in the fire...
Speaking of fire, you should check out their song "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack
Also, Robert and his wife are STILL married... lifelong romance in real life
Well remembered. Apparently he found his wallet in the remains and one of the pictures of his wife in that became the cover for the single.
That makes sense because he has like a longing to his voice in this. Like he's really heartbreaking. That's how it makes me feel. It tugs at my heart!😢

Head on the Door is such an amazing album!
Wife here..Amazing 80's song/band...I would definitely consider The Cure grandfather's of Alternative Rock..One of the best!!.Taking me Way Back!!..Yea Brad.,.I think he's wishing he had done something different..a regretful tone and vibe!!
Loads of bands can write great songs, but few bands can set a mood like The Cure.
very true!
The Cure are amazing such wonderful musicians, check out “A Forest” or “A Strange Day” great reaction
There is a live concert video on YT of this song, it's almost perfect. One hell of a band. So glad they're touring again.
Live in Sydney 🔥
Maybe the best live band I've ever seen. Consistently better live. I saw them play in Denver in support of this album and every song seemed perfect. The played a long show, but still included a medley do to having a big catalog. It takes dedication to accomplish that - you have to play those songs over and over together to become that in sync. They have such a unique sound - his vocals are very distinct, but i can always tell a The Cure song just from the music.
I always found The Cure songs mesmerizing.
Lex, it's at the end of The Vow, w Channing Tatum (2012). The Cure is a British Band that started back in 1979ish. Followed them all thru my HS years.
Thanks - I forgot about this one. You might want to try 'HOW SOON IS NOW?' by The Smiths. They never could reproduce that wild guitar riff Live in-concert, so use the official video, and/or studio album cut.
I think they did this one but B & L have reacted to so many. I can’t keep track.
The cure always brings a lovely surprise.
🇬🇧 ❤️The Cure, one of my all time favorite bands ❤️🇬🇧
Their darker stuff is my favorite. Disintegration is a top 5 album for me. Check out Prayers for Rain, Lullaby and Fascination Street
Fascination Street is absolutely wonderful.
Remembering you, fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white, so delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
Slow drowned, you were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes, but I never see anything
Robert Smith is also underrated as a guitarist
Disintegration is one of the best albums ever it is simply a masterpiece.
The song has been used numerous times in movies and television including One Tree Hill, The Vow, Misfits, The Goldbergs, Gilmore Girls and The Politician.
In the Hall of Fame for a reason. Fantastic band. Great visual shows.
love her reaction............
Love it! It feels like it belongs in a John Hughes 80s movie that he never got a chance to make.
One of the best 1980's bands. "Love Cats" is a cute, fun and good song too.
Big fan of this band since the " Boy's Don't Cry" album. Totally awesome!
It's been so long since I've heard this. Great song! Love that Rickenbacker bass.
I think this was either an Eccleshall 335 or Musicman Stingray. The Ricks were pretty much left behind after Pornography.
thanks Brad and Lex for your great reaction as always. Two soulmates for sure. God bless you both.. We all know that Lex is an 80s kid...What about it Brad...where does your soul belong??. Thanks to both of you again. Stay safe
