Mississippi Map Turtle Setup/Care Explained

  • My turtle had shell rot at the time of filming. I've been getting a lot of questions in the comments about how to fix it. From my research I found a treatment that worked. First scrape the bad spots off, paint on iodine to clean, then rinse. Then coat shell in petroleum jelly and leave it on. After 2 or 3 days, do it again. Continue until he is healed.
    After posting this video I was informed this is actually a Ouachita map turtle. TH-cam won't let me change the title. However the care and habitat is the same for either type of turtle.
    Oh and don't forget to clickity clack that like button :)

    I have a Mississippi map turtle and they are skittish when basking. I have a Southern painted that doesn't budge when he's basking and we walk by.Different breeds seem to have different personality traits.

    That turtle is a ouachita map turtle. Behind his eyes are yellow ovals. Mississippi maps have a hockey stick shape. I ordered a Mississippi from turtle source and they sent a ouachita. They sent me a mississippi for free.

      Ouachita map turtles have a split iris, and yellowish lips. This turtle has a circular iris and whitish lips. I don’t know about the yellow hockey puck behind the ears but I real couldn’t tell. I would say it’s a Mississippi map. But Ouachita/false/Mississippi map turtles can be interbred by mistake due to their similarities.

Then i bought a small power head then an air bubble pump, UVB light and a UVA basking light as well, red shrimp, food pellets, and blood worms. I have a 20 gallon long 30x 12.5 x 12.5 and in one week i will have my mississippi map turtle. After I get my turtles i will send a you a picture of them because you help me set up my tank

    To get rid of the waterfall sound you can get a piece of driftwood or slate and lean up to break the water apart. But if you do that you will want air stones and pumps to agitate the water surface

    A 20 gallon tank will only last you so long, as turtles grow quick. They key is finding a turtle that doesn't get too big, I picked a Male Map turtle because the males don't get very big. Check out the "Care Sheets" for the turtle you are interested in. They will give you lots of info on how to care for them and their sizes. Do a search for the turtle name and Care sheet. (e.g. Mississippi Map turtle care sheet) Austin's Turtle Page is really good.

    Maybe you can help me as I can't find a ton of information or guidance. I have a northern map turtle that was given to me by a friend that could no longer care for it. He has severe shell damage, and his shell has curved upwards around the edges.
    I immediately took him to the vet she gave me some calcium to give him and stated that his shell would never get better but there are things I can do to make him more comfortable.
    I set him up in a 20 gal tank with a basic 20gal filter, basking rock, UV light and basking light. His water is heated to 80 degrees f.
    I just feel awful for him and don't know how else I can help to make sure he's comfortable.
    He eats pellets currently and I plan to get some live aquatic plants (he wont take to veggies or fruits) as I'm worried a high protein diet will make his shell worse.
    Any tips or advice would be great.

      Doesn’t sound good. The shell rot I treated was soft spots. I gave full information on how I treated it in the description of the video. The turtle made a full recovery. Mine didn’t have a curved shell, it sounds like your turtle’s shell rot is further progressed than mine was. I wish you and your little guy all the best. Please let me know how it turns out if you will clear I hope my treatment plan helps.

    • @derick_campos
      @derick_campos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you always what to go big or go home 1 light is uv light the other is heating lights and the 3rd is the strip light for a mississippi map 40 gallons is enough but 70 gallons should be your average for any other turtles turtles have all type of different sizes mississippi maps are one fo the smallest type of turtles so do the rest for your reaserch and good luck 1 year too late but hope this still helps.lol

    Do a search for turtle care sheets. You could get away with room temp probably not too bad. But you need a basking spot 100%. A turtle will live for probably a good while without a basking spot, but its not going to be anywhere near a full life. They key is, the better you can simulate natural conditions, the longer your turtle will probably live.

  • @bobcobb99
    @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It really depends on your filtration. Maybe 3/4 water changes once a month.

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whichever kind of filter you use, you need to have it rated at least double. So if you have a 10 gallon tank get a filter rated for at least 20. More the better. A popular simple choice of filters for a small tank is a fluval.

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, the main part is a "power head" all it does is suck the water in through one end, and shoot it out the other end. The suction end sticks out a bit, I hollowed out an aquarium filter sponge to fit on the end, so all the water it takes in has to go through the sponge. I put a charcoal bag at the end of the sponge. I put the green hose on to send the clean water where I want it. I closed the whole thing in the brown slate rocks you see.

    Hi I have just got 5 neon tetras and 1 bronze Cory i and my map turtle has ate 1 neon tetra and he keeps on trying to catch and eat them I was just wondering of you knew why and how I can prevent him eating any more fish

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turtles eat fish, it's normal. The older a turtle gets, the more he moves towards a vegetarian diet. Some things that might help are making sure he is kept fed on pellets. Small fast fish like your tetras are good choices, if the fish are big, the turtle will kill just because of space. Don't put too many in, and make sure you have a nice big tank. When you put in fish, expect to loose some. Depending on your turtle's personality, you might likely be able to keep a few long term. As time goes on, the fish get smarter at hiding, and yea, have a place for them to hide from the turtle.

    How often do you need to clean your tank/replace the water in your tank? Mine doesn't stay as crystal clear as that for longer than a few days at the most. I have a 60 litre tank with both U3 and U4 internal filters and still find myself having to scrub down algae from my tank every week/2 weeks. Any help on how to prevent the growth of algae?

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do 3/4 water changes every 2 weeks or so. I have more of a problem with calcium buildup on the top part of the tank. Algae can be a few things. One is if it's in direct sunlight it will cause alge to grow. Also, I'd recommend a Plecos breed algae eater. Your turtle would probably leave it alone until it gets too big, then he'll just kill him because he is taking up too much space. You'll likely get a year or two with him. Google the type of algae you have, black algae or green algae. You should find common causes and remedies for both.

    • @lornahunter1644
      @lornahunter1644 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Cobb That is so helpful, hadn't even occurred to me about getting some algae eaters!! Thank you!

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, I'm glad to help! Snails work too, however my turtle seemed to like digging the meaty part out of the shell and eating it. I had better luck with the Algae eaters, the Pleco types are best because they have something of a hard almost shell like skin. I'd still google the type of algae you have, if there is something causing serious algae it could be too much for the algae eater.

    • @lornahunter1644
      @lornahunter1644 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Cobb Yeah my turtles tend to eat anything in sight so snails might not be as effective haha but i'll just need to see what my local pet shop stocks as there isn't much choice of resources up my way unfortunately! Perfect, I shall do! Think it might be put down to the lighting because the tank is quite near a window and the room can be quite brightly lit during the day.

    Your Map isn't male or Mississippi, it's female and a Ouachita. It also is nowhere near fully grown. Female Ouachitas can get between 5" to 10 3/4", usually averaging around low 9". You also say it is 4 years old. Turtles do not reach full adult size until they are 8 to 10 years old unless you over feed them which can cause overgrowth, pyramiding, and shorten the turtles lifespan.

    So is 125 litres or 27 us gallons to small for the turtle and fish ??

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly it depends on the temperament of the turtle. Some either prefer live food and some won't tolerate fish in their space. And as I said it depends on the age of your turtle as well. You can never really count on having fish in there forever, some might stay longer than others, some may last awhile. All the fish in my video are now long gone. The size of tank you need is dependent on the size of the turtle. 27 is lots for a baby, but cruel for a 11 inch turtle.

    Just a quick questions about the rocks at the bottom of your tank. Do they seem to get dirty often and also how difficult is it to clean them? I've been looking into different substrates for my turtle and so far I'm stuck between getting Fluorite or just large rocks and I feel like cleaning would be a substantial difference for my decision.

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rocks aren't too bad. You gotta move the rocks around a bit with the suction end of the syphon and all the crap will come up.

  • @bobcobb99
    @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its easier and cheaper to get a "stay small" turtle. Like a male Mississippi, but a female will grow much larger. Problem is if you get a baby, you don't know the sex. A normal size turtle would really need like 70-100 gallon for it to be happy. Honestly, If I was going to have a 70+ gallon tank, I'd go salt water fish. Another option people use is rubbermaid tubs, but you probably don't want that in your living room

      Mrsotobean generally turtles of the same size can live together just fine. if not the bigger one could attack the smaller one.,I've seen it first hand with the turtle in the video. I had to get rid of the bigger one

    Can I use regular pebbles with my set up?? Will they swallow them?

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been known to happen and cause an impaction in their bowels. Lots of people do use pebbles and are fine, but it is a risk. I don't recommend pebbles.

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tristan Johnson I've even read that sand can cause an impaction. But sand seems lots better than pebbles. 55 galleon is a good size tank. If you get two males you're rocking. The females can get big and technically need like a 100 galleon tank. It's all up to you really, either way you're good for awhile.

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Tate I've had a different one since it was a baby. this time I got an adult because the females get bigger and need a larger tank. you can't sex them when they are babies. this tank is 33 us gallon, long style. in my opinion it's the absolute smallest you could go for a small turtle. for a full size you need around 100 gallon

      then rinse. Then coat shell in petroleum jelly and leave it on. After 2

    Hi I have a missippi map turtle in with a yellow bellied slider.. i have a filter and rocks.. i noticed i need a uv light and a heat lamp... can i add oxygen by adding a bubbler? Whats the easiest way to have more oxygen? I need help also keeping the water clear any suggestions?

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely you can get a UVB light that gives off enough heat, so you don't need two. An air pump with a bubbler on the end is a great way to oxygenate the water. To make the water more clear, you need more filtration.Add a second filter, and get one rated 2 3 or even 4 times bigger than your tank. Turtles are messy and you have two :)

    • @angellopez-blindedangel21
      @angellopez-blindedangel21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up getting an aquatic plant and a bubbler.. we have two filters on it right now.. one made for turtles that goes in the water and one that stays on the rim.. I have night time heat lamp that im using for them to sun bath... then the lid has a small light in it.... like really small.... is the heat lamp N ok substitute until I get a uvb lamp or is that a different lamp all together... also got the stick pellets for food and then a bottle of mixed shrimp,millworms, berries.... any more suggestions i could use id be happy!!!

    • @bobcobb99
      @bobcobb99  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      angel lopez An Aquatic plant? As in a live plant? lol he will eat that eventually. You do need the UVB, they need the vitamin D3 from it to metabolize their food. Sounds like a happy turtle setup to me Angel :)

    • @angellopez-blindedangel21
      @angellopez-blindedangel21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Cobb thanks yes, its a live plant. Thanks to your post I am more informed on the environment they need.. i have two filters, very strong.. provides stronger current and the water is much clearer. I still dont have a uvb light money is tight right now will get one eventually... they eat very well. I have a couple videos on here of me feeding them you can check out!.. Thanks for everything.

      Cali Dog they are not very expensive to buy. But most turtles get large, the males are smaller but you can’t tell their sex when they are babies. A 10 inch turtle would require 75-100 gallon tank and good filtration, which can get expensive. Some people opt for large tubs and no filtration, or even kiddie pools for a cheaper option, but it’s not as nice

      Hey there dude!
      I am from Portsmouth and I have recently bought 2 Mississippi Maps. I bought mine from a dedicated......... garden center lmao hence why they sadly had shell rot when I bought them. Happily they are very healthy now and shedding the old rotten scutes.
      I have noticed many fish shops and reptile shops selling all kinds of turtles. If you are a first time turtle owner I'd recommend a Musk Turtle or a Red eared Slider as they are very happy to be handled and not as prone to many of the health issues Maps have.
      Apologies for a rather late response.

    • @1237paul4321
      @1237paul4321 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Termi I would not recommend a red slider for a first time turtle owner, they will rapidly grow until you need a huge pool to keep them in and live 25-30 years!

    • @Termi-Motovlogs
      @Termi-Motovlogs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the ease of their care to why I recommended them, but I do agree they grow very quick just like maps or maybe faster. It's all down to pre owning research. What's easy for myself may not be for you or anyone and vice versa.

    That is to many water changing. The water needs to be changed 1-2 times a month. And when you change it, make sure you dont change more than 30% of the water in the tank. The water needs to build op natural bacterials which the turtles need to live.
