    Keeping turtles in bins under a window to brumate isn’t “weird” at all. When I was breeding several species (Eastern Box Turtles among them) I did the exact same thing although the turtles would go into two large plastic footlockers with little flapped doors filled with mulch & straw of their own volition. These footlockers were kept under a staircase in an unheated room. As Eastern Boxies are local to the NE US region (these were bred in NJ) they can withstand slightly cooler temps (around 45 F) and would brumate from late Oct-early Nov through mid-late March. This “cooling” off makes the males extra feisty in April and more than ready for “sexy time.” I wasn’t breeding them for resale but rather it was a project conducted by Hofstra University to repopulate depleted areas that once supported breeding colonies and were now protected wildlife preserves in the tri-state region. I also bred Spotted Turtles & N American Wood Turtles. Each has it’s own specific brumation preference. Most aquatics used the pond in the backyard except the “Woodies” who had their own “dens” outdoors way below the frost line. I love our North American native chelonians however the Vietnamese Black-Breasted Leaf Turtles are on my “bucket-list” of exotic species!

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahah not weird to other turtle people... the average person would probably be super confused haha. That's such a cool story, thanks for sharing! I haven't ever had the pleasure of owning any box turtles, but they seem like they make incredible pets. These guys are incredible, definitely something I hope I can achieve some day!

      They are one of my favorite N. American species and highly sought after for their coloration & appearing to “imprint” (in a large part responsible for their decline/total decimation in some areas.) Easterns are way more aquatic than first believed and alhough unsubstantiated by myself it is alleged some will hibernate beneath the mud at the bottom of shallow ponds. N A Wood Turtles also naturally hibernate beneath water but prefer better oxygenated, running, cold-water stream beds. “Woodies” are another species much more aquatic than first imagined, they’re also thought to be the undisputed, most intelligent chelonian species -and are now one of the most highly protected. The Vietnamese Leaf Turtle’s crazy feeding response and “Mr Magoo eyes” make them a very endearing species. Good luck with the breeding project, brumation should definitely help get them “in the mood.” We’d allow our breeder male “Boxies” to have (supervised) sparring matches in front of the females. It’s part of their natural breeding/courtship routine and is said to really elevate their hormone levels. Clutches of 9 -12 fertile eggs (once 14!) were not uncommon. I know the clutch size for Leaf Turtles being a much smaller species is waaay less but I wonder if a little “macho show” between rival males would affect the % of fertile eggs per clutch? Just speculation. They don’t appear to be an aggressive species but looks can be deceiving! Cheers.

    New to the Channel and Bio Active setups. I definitely want to make my own subtrate. How concerned are your with possible pests in the typical garden center potting mixes?

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for stopping by the channel! We aren't really concerned, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, this soil was frozen outside most of the winter. Second, if we are worried about fungus gnats or something we microwave the substrate.
