  • Painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) are some of the most beautiful turtles in the world. They are also very commonly kept as pets. But is this common pet turtle actually a good pet? Is it the best pet turtle for you?

That is how they breathe. Their lungs can’t expand like ours do because of their shell so they have to do it with their legs. If you were to restrict a turtle or tortoise’s legs you would literally be suffocating them.

As the bipedal food servant of an eastern Painted Turtle, I can confirm that they are wonderful pets. Spud is so interactive through the glass and loves to chase my hands. She is not skittish and seems to enjoy any attention that I give her through the glass, even while she is basking. She's not a fan of being handled, but we all have our boundaries and I can respect that.

I've seen a million of these guys through my life in Minnesota, where lakes and streams are basically as common as dirt. Used to catch them a lot as a kid (along with leopard frogs and garter snakes). Beautiful animals, the incredible red color and patterning on the plastron is breathtaking.

I love these videos so much! I've actually been considering an aquatic friend, and have my choices down to an axolotl or a reasonable turtle, and this was very helpful.
My aunt is the unwitting owner of a "rescued Red Eared Slider" and I love its little personality, but it had the unfortunate circumstances of improper husbandry for a long time. Everything has been corrected, but Linda basically has her own room at this point and I can't dedicate that much space to a pet right this second.

    So we took her in!
After 4 years she got her colors back and was waaay more healthy!
She lived untill she was a little over 10yo. Vet said it was cuz her organs could not fit in her misshaped shell anymore, but that we gave her a waaay longer life.

I got my southern painted turtle when she was super timy. I’ve have her a little over a year. Shes still not this big. Shes so sweet. I just bought her a new tank because I was told she won’t grow in anything smaller than 10 gallons. She is so tiny in her new tank but she absolutely loves it. They really do need a large tank in comparison to their actual size. I don’t think people realize they stunt the growth by keeping them in tanks that are small because they are small. They really enjoy swimming and they need a lot of space to do so. I wanted another turtle but mango interacts so well with me and my kids I don’t think she needs a companion. I’m not sure yet.

I know it's gerally frowned upon to remove it from its natural habitat, but if I wouldn't of taken him home he would of been crushed, eaten, or dried out. I believe that the 4 inch rule was to stop turtles being sold which were small enough to fit in a child's mouth and so reduce the amount of reptile associated salmonellosis which was a problem at the time. I think that the problem with that rule is that it encourages sellers to stock animals which can be raised up to 4" cheap, like sliders, and not animals with a more manageable adult size which would take a few years to raise up to the minimum 4".

You should make a video on how to setup the proper enclosure for painted turtles it would help a lot of people steer into the right direction of turtle keeping!

We have them native here, and cannot buy them legally anymore, as far as I know. Which is a shame, because they are gorgeous. I kept one about a decade or so ago because I found a baby with half of its shell missing with a bloody wound. I kept it until its shell wound healed over, which took quite a long time. I kept him "wild" by only feeding it live food (mostly tadpoles, which it loved). I released it in the same area I found it, and I still spot him now and then, years later.

I dunno if this is in theme with the channel. But a video on hermit crabs and betta fish care would be great. Most all pet stores Ive seen have both available (even reptile pet stores) and those are two very popular and VERY misinformed pet care animals that people need to know better care for. Keep up the great work Clint!

There are also a lot of great videos on Betta fish care by channels that focus on fish care.
Examples of some I like are Aquarium coop, girl talks fish, KG tropicals, Fish for Thought and Prime time aquatics.
      Hope that helps.

I know about betta fish care. I just meant more that other people hear it. I know other channels specialize in just fish, but Clint seems to be branching out a bit in what he talks about on his channel so one more person telling people the proper care for both hermit crabs and bettas would be great. The more people that can spread good and correct info, the better.

I never see them for sale in Philadelphia where I am. We always have only, red eared sliders, African side neck turtles and river cooters.
However in the woods of southeastern PA, if search for turtles (search to check out, not keep) if I search in the wild, specifically the Fairmount park system, penny pack park, I find snapping turtles and painted turtles

I love these turtles, I have a male midland painted turtle with mbd and pyramiding, (I run a rescue.) and I have a very special turtle, it's dad was a southern painted turtle, and it's mom was a midland painted turtle, dad was a released pet, this little guy came to me because he was bitten by a softshell turtle and was going to die, but after a month of twice a day treatments, he's better, all that's left are scars, unfortunately he needs to be kept in super clean water with tannin rich waters, if not his shell starts to act up.

My first reptile rex was a eastern painted turtle we found on the road in here in western NY he had a bad crack in his shell thanks to my local pet hospital and months of recovery we reintroduced him to a nearby pond and ever since there was an increase in the little buggers in that pond.

I went to a Petco today to get dog food and for my mother to pick out some fish. When I took a little stroll past the reptile enclosures, I noticed that the humidity was WAY too low in almost all of them. It's not hard to tell because the cheap meters they use say "Desert," "Moderate," and "Tropical" right on them. Frogs, snakes, geckos, chameleons, ALL in enclosures with the meters reading "Desert"!!! I saw a crested gecko that looked completely desiccated and I thought for sure it was dead. It was lying there looking all grayish brown with a pasty white stripe running down its back and it was completely still and VERY thin. There was a baby albino king snake whose enclosure was at about 20% humidity. I went to the front of the store (even obnoxiously cutting the line in my high-urgency and wholly annoyed state) and immediately told them that all of their reptiles are going to die. Of course I knew this wasn't true for the beardies or the one little tortoise they had, but I wanted to make the point. A guy came over and started manually misting all the enclosures and HE was mad too saying, "Oh, dude, they're supposed to do this when we open!" (This was about 4pm). Interestingly, within a couple of minutes the "dead" gecko started moving very slowly and immediately went to licking droplets off the surface of an artificial branch. Do you think it'll make it?! Anyway, I don't even own a reptile yet, but, thanks to being an avid viewer of your content, I recognized what was going on and intervened. YOU saved all those critters at that Petco today. Thanks, Clint! I don't know if it'll make much difference in the big scheme of things, but I suppose I could call their corporate office too.

When the turtle keeps closing one eye it means it’s getting stressed … it closes both eyes it’s scared or something is wrong if it’s not sleeping. There’s other reasons too , but that’s the main reason.
