My turtle just passed away less than an hour ago. I just want to say your videos helped me so much with how to properly care for turtles. I only had him for 7 months and he wasn't eating for a while or swimming. Then this morning, he stopped moving. I just went to the vet and they confirmed that he had been fighting a respiratory infection. He showed no signs of heartbeat, lung activity, or head and eye movement. He had everything that he needed including lighting, filtration, water heating, and was being fed every single day. I was hoping to see him to at least 1 year but I guess he could not battle the infection anymore. Thank you so much for all of these helpful videos.
That is so heartbreaking. Don't beat yourself up though because at the end of the day your turtle is with God now. That is a heartbreaking detail. Yeah sometimes turtles have problems that are pretty much unnoticeable until it's too late. I just found my turtle on the 22nd of September and since then I've been taking good care of her and she seems to be doing fine hopefully she lasts a good 7 months to at least a year but if not I know I did the best for her some turtles you just got to do the best you can.
Dude the same thing happened to me my turtle was having the same thing and he never grew within the time I had him, I got him from a flea Market and I'm glad I got him because he taught me many things and brought me many good memories. When I got him he had a black spot on his shell and yeah. He was $20. The best $20 I have every spent.
Very impressed with your video and knowledge. I have a Western African Mud Turtle. He is a very strong and fast swimmer and about 10 inches long. I keep him in a 75 G Aquarium, and I built a basking platform on top of the aquarium, the water is completely to the top. He LOVES this configuration, and has resting places. Then when he feels like it, he climbs out via a ramp to the cage on top to bask and take a break, this cage is half the size of the large aquarium. He has had this configuration for around 3 years now. Now the fun part. He shares his tank with his fish friends. I say friends because he does not eat them. He could eat them anytime he felt like but he leaves them alone. He has lived with some of these fish for nearly five years now.
For my 15 year old slider the rule of thumb has always been the deeper the better. Now let's remember Red eared sliders can get pretty big compared to when they were babies so the water depth just keeps getting deeper and deeper as they grow. My slider is full grown now and is pretty happy in a four foot water depth, loves to hang out and sleep on the bottom. I could even go deeper if I wanted too but she is happy with four feet so I'm happy with four feet lol. I just make sure she has a good area to climb out and bask in if she want, I keep a heat lamp over her basking area and she uses it when she wants. When my slider was a baby and tiny she was in a tank two feet deep and had no problems with that loves to dive down to the bottom. My only experience with turtles is this one turtle, got it for my son when he was 10 years old and my son is now 26 years old. I guess my 15 year old turtle is actually a 16 year old turtle lol. Remember turtles can live for a very long time, be sure to take that into consideration before getting one.
Every question I had been searching Google for you just answered in this one video. Thanks so much. I rescued a musk that has lived its whole life in a few inches and wasn't sure how deep to make it. Thanks again!
I talked to a guy who studied musk turtles for 10 years, and based on that decided to give my tiny baby musk turtle lots of water with lots of driftwood, large riverrocks and plants. He's able to walk on rocks and plants and up the driftwood the way it's shaped like stairs. It's so cute, but I can't capture it on video or picture because once he sees me he comes to beg for food like a water puppy.
@@TheTurtleGirl this video came in hand, I just went from a 20 gallon tank to a 40 gallon tank with my 2 red eared sliders that I rescued... they’re getting pretty big so I was wondering how much water they’d need and you made this right in time. Now the tricky part to get them to swim up their basking ramp... still trying to get that problem solved!
I love how you say that there is no magic number as long as your turtle is comfortable. I have a Malayan Box Turtle. People who see my setup will tell me that my turtle will drown, but my turtle is swimming well at that depth. What I did is like you said, there are decorations and I observe it for days to ensure that my turtle is comfortable and have decorations to climb and rest on.
I spend a lot of time on TH-cam and this is my favorite channel. You have great energy and now im even more excited to raise my baby yellow belly slider Charlie.
I've been very concerned about my 21 yr.old female red eared slider's tank being only 30 gl. After seeing your video, I'm going to put her into the bathtub until I can find a replacement tank upgraded to a 75 gl. and a new filter. I do take her out daily, to roam the entire first floor from a funny south facing sliding door, outside sometimes in the summer, and into the more shady north facing end of the house. She appears healthy, responsive, and able to recall areas that she enjoys out of the tank.
Thank you so much for all your videos! I rescued a little slider turtle and I know nothing about turtles, lol but you have helped me more then anything I have found! Thanks again from me and Tina 🐢
Thank you for this my friend bought me a baby yellow belly slider and I was uncertain about the amount of water because he is so tiny but this really helps me out a lot thank you
Thank you for this video. I feel so much better knowing that it's okay to have my musk turtle in more shallow water with lots of things in there for him to climb on 😅 He was a rescue, like you said, from a little fish bowl, and we've gone from 2 inches to 5 inches of water in the last year or so. He's much better now, and swimming better every day. He's about 2.5" long, so to hear you say "double the length" minimum for the water depth was a big relief. Thank you!
Wow I love how much you love to teach and share....subscribed! I rescued another turtle today during my run and this time there was a fence there and I was trying to find somewhere I could pull the fence out to get her in and right when I found it a guy yelled and said he had a place inside his area where he could slide it under. I have a 40 gallon breeder tank for my mud turtle. I’ve read that mud turtles aren’t the strongest swimmers but my turtle loveeees to swim and rarely ever basks. I have a little more than 11 inches of water in my tank. I make sure that I have a lot of plants and driftwood and things for him to climb onto if he gets tired. And his basking area of course. But he seems very happy so it works for me 😊
This is random but it's so amazing to me how they can still have such good sense without eyes! I have a musk turtle too and he can smell food from across the tank! LOL
Yayy! Btw I have a red eared slider that is in a 10 gallon tank but is there anyway to find how old my turtle is? I’m thinking my tank is a little too small for her... and I can’t put fish in the tank because anything I place in there, she’ll try to eat it. ( yeah I did comment something like this on a video of yours :)
I've been thinking of buying a turtle but as a beginner..is it okay to use tap water and put some drops of anti chlorine that can be used for fishes? And my tank size is just a small rectangular aquarium is it good?
Hi Turtle girl. Thank you for your videos. They’ve been so helpful. We are preparing for our first turtle at my house and I bought a Marineland Penguin Pro 375 for a 40 gallon breeder only to just realize that it requires us to fill the tank almost full. We only want to fill it up half way so we need to return this filter and purchase another one that can filter a half way filled tank. What filter would you recommend (besides a canister) for a half full tank?
Any advice for box turtles? I know they don't swim well, but should he still be able to swim? We currently have a decently deep wading pool, but we made sure he can quickly get out on his own. Should he have a seperate dish for drinking water? And I saw in another video of yours that you said turtles only eat in water, would that apply to box turtles as well? Thanks for any advice, we found a box turtle fully grown with no water anywhere nearby, we think he was let go
I'm not proud to say this, but I have been not taking care of my turtle at all. I've had my turtle, Froppy, for one year. I used to be really depressed, and I got him for a way of mental support, but it didn't work out so well when I found out a good filter costs 100 dollars. I bought one filter that I could say, was doing its job really well, but the problem is that my tank water was really small, the capacity was only around 7 gallons. I used to keep my 5 inch turtle in a 7 gallon tank, that was not filled all the way up because it could've easily escaped.(keep in mind I didn't have a lid). I kept my turtle in that exact same tank for one year, the water was like 2 inches tall. It was a really bad life for my turtle. Some months ago, I saw my turtle refuse to eat, walk around or even sit on the magnetic island that couldn't keep his weight anymore, and when he'd sit, the island would sink. I got the sign. There was something wrong about the way I was treating him. I used to not feed him, or feed him rarely. I knew I had to do something, even though I had not even close to enough money. I couldn't ask my friend for money, because they are barely surviving, getting paid one dollar per hour and I usually give them a visit and order food while I'm there. (they are disabled and no workplace would accept them) So I got a job. At starbucks. Not the best paid, but it was good enough to save around 300 dollars to get everything my turtle needs. In 2 months, I had the money. With a lot of luck, my turtle survived because I cleaned the aquarium more often now, I fed him and I gave him conditions for him to survive. Today was the day my turtle got the biggest present of his life. He got a 35 gallon tank, 31 inch wide and 15 inch tall. I filled it up all the way with tap water, and now I'm letting it sit for around a week(I have two reasons for that. 1: tap water is not safe,) And the second reason is that I ordered some really nice fake plants, a water filter with activated charcoal, a lid for my tank with led lights and a big island. I don't know if the tank is big enough, but it sure is better than before. My turtle will feel so much better, and probably get used to me. I will watch more of your videos and other turtle owner content creators so I'd see how to take care of turtles.
Hello, I found two red eared sliders but I do not have enough space nor money for a big tank. So can I grow my turtles in a large plastic container of dimensions around 78x56x43 cm ( it satisfies the 10 gallon thingie, it is almost 30 gallons) in my balcony where they will get enough sunlight to bask? Will it be good for them? Please reply I would really appreciate it. You could save two lives if you reply.
It depends on their sizes, if they are around 4 inch SCL then those tub can do just fine for the the being (you need to upgrade eventually). But if they are ≥ 7 inch, those tub is no good.
@@RioCahyadiDrayka Thanks man, I’ll have them in the plastic container for now, but when they grow up would it be a good idea to keep them in separate tanks of the same dimension?
Hello, I have a question: is an LED lamp absolutely necessary in a water turtle aquarium? Not talking about the UVB lamp but to cycle the water, because I have brown algae that have appeared since the impoundment of his new aqua and it's impossible to get rid of it.. the aqua is not directly under sunlight for your information Thanks in advance !
I had an above tank basking area and the water was high enough for him to get up. He ended up jumping out of the tank twice, got a tbi and passes away. I’m so scared to put water too high now with my new turtles.
You are great. My turtle Maggie, a red ear, is 16 years old. I am almost sure she is overweight. She has been all her life in shallow water, I am afraid at this point, to increase the deepness. She is in a 75-gallon tank, and the water is only 1 foot deep. Suggestions?
Hi i am a new turtle owner and i am not yet buying a big tank can the turtle i have a rock in the tank but i dont think he want to climb in the rock? Its just for the meantime but should i remove water instead?
I just got a baby turtle he's about 2 inches from a family member it was not being properly cared for no basking spot no basking light no heater no filter and he was only in about two inches of water he acts like he doesn't know he's supposed to swim I added another inch of water and he slowly moves trying to reach the top he doesn't swim he just stands. It's hard for me to see if he's comfortable because he hides when he knows I'm watching. I've had him for about a week I don't pick him up unless I cleaning out his tub then I put him right back. His previous home people were always reaching their hands in and picking him up. I say all this to say I just set up his brand new aquarium and have the filter running but I think the water is to deep with the filter I cannot lower the water any lower than I have it. The aquarium is 20 gallon long the water is 5 inches high and he is about two inches not sure what to do honestly afraid to raise his water but I want to be able to keep his water clean.
My turtle is small and I just got it today but it comes up and down and dives in at the rest bar so I don't think it has any problems it's just that it likes the bottom
Can turtle bask under water????... because I'm unable to set the basking area..... but i have uv light.... so can he bask within the water.... please reply
Where did you find the large rocks in your tank? if you dont mind me asking. I have a slider and am re doing his tank. He is a year and four months old and his shell measures about five inches long. Thank you.

I woke up to a thud. Found my turtle laying on the floor, confused and looking awkward. She saw my half-sleep face and withdrew in her shell. So now I need a new lid. But since her fall she hasn't attempted to climb out again... But still gonna need a lid.
I appreciate this video. I'm just so shocked that this tiny freshwater turtle is so DIRTY. I'm cleaning the water every 2-3 days!! It's alot is work...AND after all this work I do for him all he does is swim away and hide when I come in
I may need to add more water to my turtle tank. Mine is only about a turtle and a half deep, I try to make sure nothing is put so my tortle can get stuck. Its mostly water plants and she seems to love it. I have to replace them a lot though lol
Hey I am new to being a turtle pet owner and I was wondering what’s best to get my water clear like yours? Mine is dirty and I have a filter (Topfin brand). Seem ok but not quite cleaning properly how I want it to be.
Do you know anything about african side neck turtles 🐢. He's about 8 inches long. I feel like I don't have enough water in my 75 gallon tank. Due to having his basking area platform.
We found a RES on our backyard and I’m having trouble finding the perfect tank. What store/brand do you recommend? I’m considering a 40 gal. Appreciated ❤️❤️
Just a standard glass aquarium from a chain pet store works fine! if you're lucky, petco might have their dollar per gallon sale so you can save some money on tanks ;)
Hi Im not sure if you will see this but I have a red eared slider and it has everything it needs especially the lights but recently the top of its shell starting fading and it’s fading quickly doesn’t look like she’ll rot but I’m not sure it also has been eating everyday and acting normal any suggestions I’m worried ;(
it's possible that wen they get out of the water, the shell just dries out and looks a different color. shedding is also a normal and healthy possibility.
Hi Turtle girl I have a rest letter a yellow slider and I'm working on a alligator turtle and a snapper I feed my turtles shrimps chicken and salad I mean cucumbers carrots

@@rushildhar2389 what's their size right now ?.
@@RioCahyadiDrayka 3.5”
@@RioCahyadiDrayka I already have a 6.5 gallon fish tank but I’m not sure weather I can keep them in that.
My Red Slider likes to sleep on the floor with its head out, is that normal? It's not staying in the water at all. Please help.
Hii I am from India my turtle get white spot in turtle shell what cai do what is that 7:16
If I have recently taken on 2 Musk turtles that have only lived in a few inches of water, should i introduce more water after each water change?

Hello,
I have a question: is an LED lamp absolutely necessary in a water turtle aquarium? Not talking about the UVB lamp but to cycle the water, because I have brown algae that have appeared since the impoundment of his new aqua and it's impossible to get rid of it.. the aqua is not directly under sunlight for your information
Thanks in advance !
Thank you so much I have a few turtles I got my first one when I was eight I'm 14 now and I now know how to fill this up right
I don't have a filter at the moment is it okay if I put water store water in with him ? Lmk please
What tank is this that you use? It’s hard to find a square tank like this one and I want to give my turtle more width.
Hey, can you tell me what enclosure you use for Sienna and what heatpad?
I had an above tank basking area and the water was high enough for him to get up. He ended up jumping out of the tank twice, got a tbi and passes away. I’m so scared to put water too high now with my new turtles.
You are great. My turtle Maggie, a red ear, is 16 years old. I am almost sure she is overweight. She has been all her life in shallow water, I am afraid at this point, to increase the deepness. She is in a 75-gallon tank, and the water is only 1 foot deep. Suggestions?
my tank the water evaporates, d oi add more water when it evaporates?
Same with mine. I usually let it dissipate about 5 gallons and then take out 5 gallons and add 10 during my water change. Seems to work great!
@@zaffromstatefarm oh ok Thanks mate!
@@redspicycatnip no problem
yep! you can always add more water...either during a water change or just top it off every now and again.
@@TheTurtleGirl okay thanks!!!
What about taking turtle out of tank occasionally to dry out more. Is this necessary or helpful
Is there a specific reason why my slider is swimming frantically back and forth and she keeps diving

Thank you. Super helpful.
I just got my turtle from someone today and they said he has air in his shell, can his water still be deep
My turtle is small and I just got it today but it comes up and down and dives in at the rest bar so I don't think it has any problems it's just that it likes the bottom
Always enjoy your videos!
thanks!
Can turtle bask under water????... because I'm unable to set the basking area..... but i have uv light.... so can he bask within the water.... please reply

Can you tell us about Indian roof Turtles
Thanks for sharing
I woke up to a thud. Found my turtle laying on the floor, confused and looking awkward.
She saw my half-sleep face and withdrew in her shell.
So now I need a new lid. But since her fall she hasn't attempted to climb out again...
But still gonna need a lid.
yikessss yeah make sure you escape proof haha!

Hey turtle girl is it okay to put play sand in your turtle tank will it hurt your turtle if you do
Yes you can. If they eat it, it'll go through them. I would advise using Play Sand
I appreciate this video. I'm just so shocked that this tiny freshwater turtle is so DIRTY. I'm cleaning the water every 2-3 days!! It's alot is work...AND after all this work I do for him all he does is swim away and hide when I come in
Love this video
I may need to add more water to my turtle tank. Mine is only about a turtle and a half deep, I try to make sure nothing is put so my tortle can get stuck. Its mostly water plants and she seems to love it. I have to replace them a lot though lol
Hey I am new to being a turtle pet owner and I was wondering what’s best to get my water clear like yours? Mine is dirty and I have a filter (Topfin brand). Seem ok but not quite cleaning properly how I want it to be.
Doing frequent, scheduled water changes and having a filter that turns over the tank multiple times an hour is your best best!
sooooooooo helpful
glad it could help!
I wouldn’t even keep turtles, but found this informative. Keep it up!
@Chris McCune I guess. Deal with it

Do you know anything about african side neck turtles 🐢. He's about 8 inches long. I feel like I don't have enough water in my 75 gallon tank. Due to having his basking area platform.
unfortunately don't know too much about sidenecks, sorry!
@@TheTurtleGirl Ok thanks anyway. Love your videos by the way!
So mine is yellow bellied baby slider turtle should i fill it?
I would! just make sure you have plenty of decorations :D
Thank You ❤🐢
welcome!
Hi turtle girl is it okay to feed your turtle shrimp frozen shrimp from the store
You can feed them frozen Shrimp however only as a treat. Once per week
So I have a 4 inch and 3 inch turtle. So I need 22 gallons of water?
I think you 15 second need is cute, and informative 😉 😊
