It would be great to see follow-ups on these estates - "where are they now"? Alastair passed in 2015 and is buried on the property. At 80 yrs, MaryAnne decided to sell and Cote (Cothay) Manor was sold in October 2020 to its new owners for £5.25M. She truly created something of great beauty.

I've looked up a few of the homes and found that they are sold. I think Covid really hurt the owners. Also, some have passed away and their heirs couldn't or wouldn't take on the project. It's really very sad but at least the estates are in good hands with buyers who paid a premium because of the upgrades done during and after the TV show.

My family live on an estate and run a Bnb. I have learned so much from this show. We don’t spend money we don’t have. We don’t dream about what could be but keep our feet on the ground as to what is.
Then you have missed the MAIN POINT AND HAVE LEARNED NOTHING.
THIS SHOW HAS ALWAYS EMPHASIZED IN ESTING IN AND PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THROUGH GROWTH REINVESTMENT. THESE PSUEDO ELITE JUST WANT TO NOT HAVE TO WORK AND LEECH OFF THESE PROPERTIES UNTIL ALL VALUE AND RESOURCES GONE BUT SOMEHOW STILL KEEP THE SHELL AND LAND IN THE FAMILYANS SOMEHOW AVOID INHERITANCE TAX🤣😂🤣😂🤣

They don't appreciate "Charlie's outburst" because Charlie is the only one making intelligent comments & possessing good, decent sense. A footnote: I loved the photo of a young Mary Ann & Allistair looking breathtakingly elegant, perhaps on their wedding day.
I agree about Charlie...the outburst was all Maryanne's. Such an ugly, toxic attitude.

Ruth needs to take the owners to other places/estates that have been successful to show them what is possible.
She can ask them to view these viseos.
People in other countries could learn a lot from this.I love how mother and daughter are sporting the same roll neck jumpers and pearls.
Ruth is so multi-talented - brilliant marriage counselor too.
The Aubrey park estate should also consider having multi ages. Not just elderly and thirtysomethings. I’m 57 and my Daughter is 36. We’ve been looking into moving abroad from the US. We would definitely jump on the apartments. It’s been proven that elderly live longer healthier lives in a mixed community. The sharing of ideas, experience etc build a strong community. If they have a decent shed they could also rent the shed (unused stalls) to artists of all kinds. Of course strict rules and regulations but it could be amazing!

Maryanne and Alistair what a beautiful estate ,my favorite of all time!.
The most successful ones are the ones that get the stick out of their bottom and adapt!! This it’s a family home blah blah blah we’ll yes 200 years ago it was but they had land and family money to support it! Not to mention the amount of staff they had it was never just a family home. It baffles me how they won’t budge even at their own demise.
I don’t know why Ruth Watson is on these shows anymore. She is lovely and a marvelous human being.
As an artist, I can't help but imagine artists residences and workshops in these beautiful historic locations.
Children must learn that what belongs to their parent does not mean it automatically belongs to them. You need to make your own way in this world, in this life. Make your own money, and stand on your own two feet and also be thankful that they took care of you for as long as they did.
i think that is what the owners were trying to say. otherwise if your thinking your handed a retiring life you might not strive for your own life of own making. also i could see they didnt wanted to be hated down the road for a purdon they inherited and the guilt with it.
I've seen this one before (Mary Ann & Alistair). I think its my favorite house and garden. Ruth is wonderful with a very good inclination for business. Glad she is helping country estates to survive.
I would let it out to groups to run residential retreats, yoga, meditation, tai chi, qigong...spirituality and health & well-being is a big business.
The music is far too loud and covers-up the people speaking.

I have never seen a more beautiful manor, it's like something out of a fairy tale, fantasy, or historical movie. Reminds of the House of cinderella in Cinderella 2015.
Excellent Adrian, my namesake. Your lawn surrounding your house could do well as a herb garden serving your table, your laundry with lavender, and some natural possible pest repellents.
There are some wonderful areas bordering the immediate herb garden possibilities, in which to grow vegetables to serve your tables.
Inviting a localy produced ingredients chef to celebrate each season, could also be a possible seasonal venue for your picture/photo opportunists and locals.
Speaking of which locals I am sure would enjoy a once a week tea for you to conseder selling produce from your merry gardens with.
Of course this all is in accordance with season.

This is how these magnificent estates end up on the abandoned homes lists, with all of its glory, just sitting there overgrown. No one has the money to keep them up nor will the owners make the right decisions to save the place. When ppl would love to come see all of its glory but you do need a chief, meals, a gift shop, events planned where the ppl can come view the place and spend their money. Ppl will not just throw all their money at a place without these things in place.
This is very true. However, the Robbes didn’t seem to understand this😟
Glad to learn the Robbs sold the property in 2020 for +500mil. They had the best of intentions but it was too much for them, physically and emotionally.
This house (the Robbes) is amazing! It really is sad that they didn’t take her recommendations. Some people do not have the entrepreneurial initiative- and this couple is a perfect example.
People like the Robbes seem to live in their own little world🙁

Why so many owners argue with Ruth and do not take her advice is beyond me! Do they want to fail?? I agree with Ruth’s description of MaryAnn as a difficult woman! But I guess her stubbornness is the reason the house has been restored to such a high level.
I don't know who Ruth is to Briton, but from what I've seen so far, I feel that she is wrong for this show. She doesn't get what their dreams are.

After watching several episodes, it amazes me that these elderly people never put in a plan for after their death. They wasted decades fumbling around, acting as if they would live forever. They never had a plan to set up the next generation for success and bring in young blood.
It is maddening
Cothay update (Oct. 2022)--they solved the problem by selling it, apparently. The website is lovely and it looks like they are very busy with a calendar of events.
It doesn't say what happened to the parents or if they are still around.

So exactly what Ruth suggested they do to keep it in the family! But they wouldnt do it, so now its not in the family. But so what? They weren’t long term custodians. The garden was a wonderful achievement, but its future depends on viability - always

Guess I am on updates... Sadly, the bank took the house from Nigel and Jennifer. And being just outside London, they really could have done something with the place. By the time this was taped, there was no hope. Once a bank asks for monthly meetings, it is too late. In the US atleast. I looked it up solely to see if it would end up the same way it would in the UK. Guess it is the same everywhere. Makes sense, considering the economy at the time (which likely made it worse!).
Ruth definitely knows assertive... but let her make full recommendations to help maintain relationships too

It seems that many of the monied Brits that are aging and have theses magnificent homes but rather ungrateful and disinterested children ! What I see as someone in the business of “ historic hospitality “ many of the British ( though very aware of their history and heritage don’t seem to want to share it ) the lack of true hospitality and the enthusiasm in welcoming the public in so as to keep their homes truly surprises me ! If you want theses homes and gardens to survive you have to share them and be joyful in the sharing and preservation of what they love ! I have long ago shared my home and grounds here in the States snd it thrills me that I have company and keep busy with that everyday ! Life would be boring without all that ( at least to me ) ! The Brits need to loosen up a bit or they will loose all these wonderful things !
America is absolutely full of private millionaire and billionaire homes that are not open to the public. The Uk is full of homes that are …What a lot of nonsense yo talk
I feel like some of the estates could tuck some RV sites onto their grounds where they wouldn't be seen by most. Camping is so popular and keeping sites is not very expensive nor time consuming. Horse people are used to camping with their horses and would love the freedom to ride the estates.

They should host a plein air painting event and invite King Charles to Judge the event! They could add a gift shop to sell originals and prints of the artist works.

I’ve watched quite a few of these. Most of the problemis these people still think they’re aristocrats. And these are their private homes. That would be true if they still had the money to back it. However these places belong to the community. They deserve to be preserved and shown off. They need the family that cares for them and they need the community to support them. Even if you had the money to own it and could afford the upkeep why wouldn’t you open it to the community? It’s an investment, that’s self sustainable.

Love the series and seeing the magnificent homes albeit struggling to exist. Sometimes it's very difficult to accept and embrace suggestions especially for those who are not aware that they are not making the best business decisions.
i kept wondering how they live to eat and dress and mingle. When the daughter said she didnt want to work everyday, or Ruth said something to the father about what he did during the day, i thought maybe they live off a trust fund that includes no extra for repairs upkeep etc. Or maybe off the charity of some sort? I missed a lot that was said... cause of the music.. etc.

The question is…Are you willing to charge to make your life better? Then do they have the intellectual ability to do the work that needs to be done and are they willing to work?
l'm a big Ruth Watson fan (going way back to her Sainsbury's Days (and first cookery book) And l love her forthright close to the bone wit ! However, sad to hear her mention of toothless gum on custard' relating to the retired folk living in this house. (hope lm allowed to say this )

I watch this show to see the lovely homes n gardens but it is crazy for me the attitude of the owners. It is like they all have their heads in the sand. If I was Ruth most of the episode I would simply walk away.
Mary Ann is incredibly frustrating. Why did they invite Ruth if she is going to poo-poo literally every idea she offers? And not even in a logical way. She is clearly resisting any change because she just wants it to stay the same until they die there. It's really a selfish attitude. If I were their children, I wouldn't dream of taking anything on until it's at least beginning to be self-sustaining. Honestly, to not care about leaving one's children with a million-pound inheritance tax just to stay in control and avoid change is reprehensible.
Possibly, but there are no guarantees that the income would continue after they are gone. I think they did the best thing by selling.
They never made a profit so they must have had quite a bit of other money from somewhere to make so many improvements!

Am I missing something? Do they not have instruments like Living Trusts in the U.K.? Avoid estate tax but still be in control of the property?
They need to employee someone(s) to do the house tours, someone to run and man the cafe, sell the plants etc. Take the pressure off mammy and daddy. The extra profits will easily pay for their wages. And maybe even a manager for events (and website, advertising), outdoor / indoor theatre, poetry, music. Keep it simple, homely.
It's not that easy. Hires are expensive and human so that also requires management. HR, taxes, and such. Additionally you can't ignore that they only wanted a garden, you have to listen to the home owner. Sometimes all that works out but you still have to do much of it yourself to maximize profit.
1st episode: oldest daughter runs modeling shoots as SPARINGLY as she chooses. Use only great room and oversee. 3K per day. (I wouldn’t change a thing either ❤)
What were they THINKING!? Get rid of staff and have the meals prepared by an outside catering company! They're feeding 30 people, most of whom are staff!
I added an update above. What I didn't say is that I am shocked that they are not in jail!! I don't know the bankruptcy laws in the UK, but I would guess that they don't want to see someone who owes the bank £4 million, who then spends tons more on catering with champagne, etc., gifted to a fundraiser??? They better not have taken it as a deduction...I am also not sure why the NHS doesn't contribute... 🤔

I truly enjoy these posts but when the music plays at the same time as they are speaking, it is too loud to hear their voices.
They could have artists painting at the location and put them up for sale, sell handmade items in the tea and cake area.

The Adrian & Caroline episode was very nerve wracking to watch - Adrian was in a full blown mid-life crisis. Wasn’t even about the house. He wasn’t sure if he wanted the marriage at all. It was so evident in his dialogue throughout the episode. He even went so far as to say “and go our separate ways”…that’s it, it’s out there isn’t it?
Would be a interesting to see what happened to the property in the end.
She's a harpy..
I googled it and they bought the house for £680k originally but sold it a few years later for £335k so they took a massive loss. They got divorced, and she was ordered to pay £41k to a company that her ex husband was a director of. Sounds like a ripe mess and I feel bad for them, especially her.

What a stunning property..... goodness it hit me like a lightning bolt in my stomach. I absolutely would love to live like that. But the audio editing here is really poor and unprofessional since the background sound is not so much in the background anymore, which makes watching this episode a pain for the ears.
Poor lady, husband hits her with the " D " word, which is completely out of the blue for her. That is a very, very dangerous thing to say. Once you start thinking, that is the answer to your problem the more rocky things get.
and add that to thought, which may be why they didnt work well together for a good cause their home...

Love this show, so I decided to back up to the beginning. Unfortunately, the background music is drowning out the voices. I am forced to turn it way down and use subtitles. Hope the next episode is better.
Re: Scotland episode
Cringing that they didn’t feed the photographers dinner!!!!! And Adrian worked until midnight and at 4am he takes them on his first tour. Cranky and sleep-deprived the entire show.
I didn't think about that aspect of the big picture until I was watching another channel & it was mentioned that the crew would be dining with the program narrator and lady of the home they visited. She was ecstatic to feed these people & talked about the preparation of the food & the ingredients. I thought, "What a class act to remember that the crew is made up of humans who get hungry!!"
A bad combination for someone who came into the situation needing to slow down and take care of his health.

I've always liked Ruth, but upon rewatching this, after I saw it on TV originally, I must say that I found her comments at Aldebury Manor in Surrey very anti old people. I'm, sure she's trying to do her best in difficult circumstances & in a short time, but what she said was borderline unpleasant. Of course she's correct in that not all younger people would buy a flat in this house with lots of elderly people, but I've always found older people great company, comforting even, and for all of my life, & I won't be the only person that would think in this way. I think this speaks to the wider societal problem of how the elderly are treated & this attitude just buys into all of the negative & totally silly stereotypes, what a shame Ruth!
That stupid music is making me COO COO!
Another channel I watch plays classical music, quietly in the background, that is always the perfect choice, as the narrator shares the story. I love it.

Adrian just keeps wanting to run away - from the house, business, marriage. He bought the house to live in and create a business - instead, he's doing 16 hr. days of farm work, nothing about the house and business, and abandoning his marriage, while living in the servants' quarters! Why buy the house in the first place, when it lies empty, unlived in?
Wish they'd turn the voices down a bit, I can barely hear the music.

I do so appreciate these episodes being available. However, the sound mix is off-balance, and the music is much too loud. I try to just in the audio on my television, but it can’t adjust the source recording of course. Wonderful house.
A couple of things I didn't understand from this video was at the beginning when the owner talked about all the money it would take to "restore" the 500-year-old wall paintings. Why on earth would you want to "restore" something that is over 500 years old? Has there ever been talk of restoring the ancient ruins in Rome? What about Egyptian hieroglyphs? Would anyone ever consider "restoring" them? When a painting is over 500 years old the ONLY concern is how to prevent further deterioration! So, I didn't understand that.
The other thing I did not understand was all of the family drama with the youngest (very attractive) daughter who the couple wanted to leave the home to after the other siblings expressed disinterest in the home. What am I missing? The very attractive youngest daughter didn't seem to want the home. Why? What am I missing (Inb4 some troll says "a brain")
Before the property was sold in 2020 it had been used as the backdrop for major Hollywood productions as well as TV series which I am sure brought in much more in income (easily over a million) than any of the revenue generating ideas proposed by the property "expert" Ruth Watson.
Inheriting this house, will be " inheriting a poisoned chalice." ha. yes, well put; maybe. in that circumstance.

While the inheritance tax rules are ridiculous in the UK, it does seem that the (random) 7 years+ prior to one's death that exempts the children from paying the tax, may actually help them learn, alongside their aging parents, how to do the business and go forward. Or, that they don't want to take it on, and decide to sell it
But atleast there is a chance of them getting attached and continuing on.
couldnt they band together and make it a business. and work around it. as a business with associates etc. or would the government demand one person only as heir... or maybe private agreements legal agreements

I don't think it was mentioned how much of the visible land Adrian owned, but I don't think Adrian was working on his own land. I believe from the dialog that he was hiring himself out.

Maybe rent out an area for someone to open a food business that someone else can run and a tour guide tooo. To take the pressure off them.

Is it just me or is the music a LOT louder than the voices? I feel like i can barely hear the people meanwhile the violin is blaring 😂

A person who has had a brain injury may be very inflexible and unable to do complex thinking such as taking responsibility. I fear they are asking Adrian to do what he is not capable of doing.
