Four bed townhouse in same square similar age for sale for £1 million - so investment in the building alone has been worth it

Seems they changed it to the Reading Room Hotel and have done well. They now charge £500.

Does it still have all that wrought iron on the front? Gloomy, negative energy. Anyway, good on them for giving up the best room. I've a friend who rents out his condo on the beach in Mexico. He lives like a homeless person at such times between guests he goes down to inspect and lease it to the next person. (He has his homestead here in Minnesota other times of the year.) Maybe this couple could let all the rooms in the hotel, and live rough themselves.

I hope with all my heart that Margate does an about turn and their beautiful Hotel is a success.
And let's hope the UK doesn't slump no more as my town that use to bustle has changed beyond recognition with shops in the town shutting, Working mens clubs and pubs closing,. Gone are the days of a community and only the corner shops, the taxi ranks, kebab & curry takeaways growing. It's a totally differant town.

My town the same state too. I avoid it. It WAS a tidy, cared for, very industrious working class town, with money people on the outskirts. A thriving celebrated, 800 year old market. Shops galore. Packed with shoppers and "stops" for a cuppa. Two Victorian arcades. It had a HUGE heart and soul. NOW: it's a filthy dump. The renowned market dessimated! It is unrecognisable now. An embarrassment. Hotels exist but only just! You'd definitely NOT start a business there, with the marijuana fragrance permeating the air. I hope Margate pick up. You do have the sea that does help. I wish them luck but they've got to learn the ‘B&B’ persona. They're very smart, clean and today too! There’s no ‘tatty’ edges.

They are still open, they are still running it and charging £215 a night with a minimum of 2 nights in 2024. That is very expensive!

That's a very basic hotel price in Canada 🇨🇦 $280-350 gets you a definite stepp up from basic average 2024 , from a frequent traveler.

Nice to see they're still at it and their investment paying off. People who have a different view on hospitality and are willing to invest in a revitalized area is the key to this success.

I must admit I found the Rough Luxe Hotel that this couple was sent to look at very unappealing and simply can’t imagine anyone paying a couple of hundred pounds to stay in a place that looks like cockroaches would come out after the lights are off. Apparently, not very many other people could either, because it’s permanently closed now. Hope this couple make better choices….
ETA: they made much better choices and appear to still be in business, so good for them. But continental, not full English, breakfasts 😆

I thought the Rough Luxe took the shabby look way too far and it looked like it was falling down, just shocking and I wouldn't have stayed there. The Reading Room is my kind of decor, where just a bit of the original features are showing, they did the old building justice, I hope they succeed and I hope Margate picks up.

OMG🙀 - There's no way on earth that I'd want to choose to stay in the Rough Luxe Hotel! It would be one of my greatest nightmares to wake up in the morning looking at an unplastered ceiling where there was evidence of a water leak in the past! 🙄

You don't "think about" how you will do a business after you have sunk $300,000 into it with no business plan! And they bought at the top of the market! If they had just waited until the Great Recession, which was on the horizon and could see it coming, they would have been a little better off having bought at a much lower price, but still living in dreamland. And then to learn that they didn't even inspect for structural issues, especially the roof! The roof of any structure is the first and main thing to determine it is in order or not before you go any further in considering a purchase, even just a storage shed.

Thought I recognized the voice of Hugh Bonneville as the narrator. The episode dates from 2009 so just before his role as Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey.

So, what kind of clientele are they looking for? Just the "argues". Is not a normal family or check-out girl welcome or do we just get a nod. Very discriminating.

This pair really annoy me. Over-priced pretentious bare bones rooms, that look half-finished. Too posh for fry-ups? Give me a break. Also..very late check in times and early chucking out.
