    As an American I am overwhelmed by the beauty of these grand houses. I love the way they so casually say houses have been in the family 900 yrs, or when they refer the the Medieval portion without stopping to be agog for 3 minutes or so. It's like walking into huge, glorious historical works of art. Thinking of the grand houses destroyed after WWI hurts my heart. When you live in an old house you become part of its story. Seeing them saved is wonderful.

      I remember being absolutely APPALLED when I heard that the gorgeous, rambling Victorian house that stood in for Lucy Honeychurch's family, Windy Corner, was TORN DOWN some years after the movie was made. It is so sad that buildings with grace and beauty get run down and end up getting torn down and ugly row homes or duplexes get built with no charm, no detail, just ugliness.

    These are SUCH beautifully historic buildings. It is truly a shame that they can't be restored to their original beauty and purpose. Being Canadian and having so few historical buildings, very few as old as those in Europe, I lament the loss of so much history.

    Having been in real estate in the Midwest for years...the problem with selling these structures are the sellers. They think they should receive what the home WOULD be worth if it was restored. They don't take into consideration the cost of restorations. And if they can't get what they want, the house sits there until its too far gone. I have seen a large number of historic homes torn down, just because the sellers wanted an insane price for them.

    • @marlenebraxton7711
      @marlenebraxton7711 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    As the old adage goes, "Out of sight, out of mind" and this home is definitely one of the forgotten ones. Or it, would be be occupied with a family and filled with laughter and joy. The old plantation home at first is very deceiving, it is so much grandeur and larger on inside than it appears on the outside. These old homes were a labor of love and appreciation back in the days. I believe it is the reason they can stand for centuries without as much as a drop of water inside. Id move into this place in a heartbeat. What a beautiful pad. Absolutely, gorgeous!!

    Sadly, it is often those of the family lineage who've inherited these estates, who are the worst suited to maintain them because they don't know how to save their money for the repairs as well as roll up their sleeves and do the work. Warren Kelly has apparently been spending much of his life on his hobbies such as building a car etc. He is in denial about the state of this house while it continues to lose its roof and cause irreversible loss. He is probably following the behavior of most of his former ancestral owners.

      I agree! Ruth is no joke. But that family is not on the same page. Especially the daughters husband. His attitude reflects how he feel like “that is not his family” and why should he go with Ruth plans that require for him and his wife to invest their money for a family that isn’t his. But sometimes people just have to build the new the Older infrastructures. While using those hysterical holes ass hotels are air B&Bs. I don't know. Yes, we shouldn't armchair diagnose over the internet, but... he strikes me as a bit neurodivergent. The very niche hobbies (old car, stained glass, canoe building), seems to focus on details instead of the larger picture, can't seem to set the right priorities (warm house for small children, fixing the windows) etc. He is just old enough to fall into the generation where milder forms of neurodiversity weren't diagnosed as long as the person could still "function" in society. And if neither his wife nor anyone else ever called him out or got him help... yeah, I don't think it's just laziness. At least not with him.

    One BIG thing to remember is Death Duties. After World War II the Estate was liable for two lots of Death Duties. When Warren's father died there was a third. Finally when his mother died, yet another. Death Duties run roughly 13% a time, so that takes a huge amount of money out of the coffers which means there is less and less money to keep up with maintenance. Repairing the roof could run to 7 figures.

But I noticed sometimes you got to play some really good soft music (Like the Isley brothers) to set tone to help people with your vision. Because a Musical atmosphere Influences people State of minds.

      American here, but I've always been confused about this myself. In the states there's an inheritance tax, but to get around it if you know it'll be huge, is you sell it to the family member that you want to receive it for $1 before you die. Is that not something that can be done in the UK?@@dross24MA

      I do believe Castles or Estate should be tax free. With the changes of time , unless they have income from a business they are not able to afford help to keep these large homes from deteriorating. The Owners were not raised to clean, repair and even cook. So they are totally helpless. I came from an Estate in E. Prussia, the family completely relied on maids, gardeners and repair people. Yes we had money, but it would have come to a point where the family would have had to buy some kind of business for an additional income. Of course we did not come to that point as the Russians were near and we had to leave everything just with the clothes on our back and get evacuated to Germany. What money we had stayed in the Bank as my family believed we could return. 😊

      @crs6504 I believe that family members who have been isolated for so long might experience tripidation on the idea of sharing their living space with "strangers". After years of abundance, renting out rooms is perceived as "failure" yet times have changed - we are no longer living in that era of "explorers" travelling across the globe and bringing back lots of fortune! I am so proud of this generation of the Kelly family who accepted Ruth's wisdom.

    I don't know how things actually worked out, but I'd suggested a spa at Whitborn Hall. If you have a spa, there's massage, aromatherapy, yoga, and specialty things that spa retreats offer. You could combine that with the tent idea, and offer gardening therapy which would be a Homesteading type concept in a way. People enjoy reconnecting with land which would cut down on the work that all the residents have to do. Because some of the customers would do it and some hired help would do it as well as the hired help fixing the house. If you do weddings, you could offer a wedding with a honeymoon spa package. So you would make more money than 4,000 pounds. The combination of all these things should keep it calm, especially if the residents get to participate in the spa services whenever they need them. It's just an idea. I think it would be different and it would work. Plus, people would enjoy seeing each improvement made into the house because of their patronage.

      There are many historic homes that are not on the scale of these mansions, that are torn down regularly to make way for housing developments selling shoddy McMansions. I live in an Arts and Crafts era home that has maintained its original decor to this day. The kitchen has been modernised, but in a style that blends in with the rest of the house. There are no government funds to help preserve these homes either. I have 19 rooms in total with a brick carriage house on the property. That is enough effort to keep up, let alone a huge country mansion.🖤🇨🇦

I ask myself will I likely find this again & will I continue to think about it & be regretful if I leave it? I try to be very selective on my purchases since the budget is tight, but if it's something that will brighten the lives of me & fur-child, then so be it. We'll cut corners elsewhere on something else.

He obviously has nothing, but I guess he's thinking, his elbow grease is enough payment for him to get the house in the end. He landed himself a gf from a notable family, with land and property. I fell he's only with the daughter because of the estate. I find he allows himself far too much say in THEIR property! Afterall, he IS just a boyfriend! Not a husband! No legally part of the family! If I had gone into one of those rooms that were just painted the same day or the day before ( even with latex paint), as a bride or as a guest, I would have a severe asthma attack, as well as having my sinuses affected. I would've had to run immediately into fresh air or have gone to the emergency department ASAP. How were these people so assured that the bride or groom, and anyone else wouldn't have had significant sinus issues, and a severe asthma attack from being in newly painted rooms? I work as an emergency R.N. and I'm even on significant sinus and asthma medications, as well as an albuterol rescue inhaler and double Epipens, prescribed by my allergist. It still wouldn't take away the horrible effect of being in a freshly painted room. Significant to severe allergies and asthma are more prevalent among both children and adults, in every country, than many would dare to guess.

      Complain much? For the few people with severe allergies like yourself maybe this wouldn’t be a good fit. I highly doubt they would have people renting a room that has just been painted the day before, give me a break. Most paints today are completely safe with people including pets children and the elderly. With the windows open after a couple of weeks the initial odour goes away. Plus other items are added= furniture rugs linen, they will be cooked in and slept in, it wouldn’t be a problem. It might surprise you that hotels banks hospitals civic buildings sports Plex’s, everywhere public gets a coat of paint now and again to keep it fresh and clean. I don’t know what you expected, after all this is a show on home improvement, painting is the first least expensive option to change and improve the feel of a room and brighten it up🕊
