Actually, Having studied architecture I feel I can say. Architecture is a beautiful field but when I hear an architect talk about projects... Jesus... nothing less exciting. I am amazed at how a group that - in theory - studies and designs spaces has so little connection to reality. Strange to say the least.
@@JB-eg1tb Yeah, I don't really care for the teleprompter-assisted scripts. I prefer more natural commentary. However, not everyone is as comfortable talking to a camera as this dude. 🙂
Nah, I find it distracting. Why am I reacting (good or bad) to the persons personality (could be the architect or inhabitants). I’d rather let their homes do the talking (they say ALOT) don’t need more jabbering on top of that. There are millions of videos like that if we want that.
Check you local public library (for books), they sometimes have a lending library of other items including tools (mine does here in the US East Coast).
Do you know why we all love these two videos featuring this guy? Because he's just a cool dude. No matter which apartment he lived in or which one NTS showed us, we'd still love it. Good job NTS and great apartment bro.
I love this channel but have not always been able to relate to the owners. After renovating my own melbourne, brick, 1 bed apartment, fueled by will and hope. Seeing someone else also renovate a small place like mine, for themselves by themselves, is so meaningful to see. The whole video feels very honest and really reflects my personal experience. Thank you!
I really love that he DIYd his flat for the most part. Creativity with leftover wood scraps to keep costs low as much as possible. However, the best part is all the Facebook market place finds for a sustainable lifestyle. Please more content like this.
Amusing- Sean speaking Italian in the beginning and Italian subtitles showing up on my computer screen. I was thinking, "wait a minute- I have my subtitles (CC) set to English!" I was just about ready to stop the video and check my settings but then he lapsed into English. Made me smile. I am hearing-impaired (and hearing aids don't fix everything) so I often rely on CCs/Subtitles (and context) to understand what I am hearing. Anyway, Sean gave me my first smile of the day (watching this in the early AM).
I love the green ply and the overall aesthetic and vibe, the terracotta tiles, and the chrome accents with pottery and plants. It feels very curated and deliberately chosen.
I know this place. I'm about 20 mins walk away but still in West Brunswick. Big suburb! You're right, the bones on these old places are good. i have a similar one on Moreland Road!
I love this format! This is so real, and having the owner who did most of the work with a reasonable budget is amazing. Also, the apartment is amazing!!
Love this process video. Very inspiring to see that not only did he DIY most of it, he was learning as he went. Also, he’s got such a great sense of humor about all of it, and clearly some really good friends!
Good renovation in an older solid building. Love the layout, the moveable seating units, funky book shelving. Lots of recycling materials - good work! Love all the storage, and the green colour. Using a projector on a white wall is a great idea. I’m from the 1950’s era where slides were projected on the glass beaded screen.
At first I thought, another video about this guy and his apartment? Already? But it was really insightful and entertaining to get all the extra details!
as much as i love seeing architects showcase their incredible work, seeing someone talk through the process of DIY-ing his own apartment (that he lives in!) is super refreshing and such a treat :D loved the video!!
Lovely to se someone who has built the apartment themselves and not just another architect/designer, that talks about the flow between the rooms. I might dare to share my beloved home-project as well
Plyco are good, not too far away from this location too. The first video is one of my favourites, shows that it’s quite achievable for me at this moment. I appreciate the cost breakdown and the materials used mentioned in this video!
Plyco is definitely a solid choice, and the location is convenient. The first video makes the project feel doable, especially with the clear cost breakdown and details about the materials used.
I feel so inspired by Shaun! I am renovating our apartment in London and have taken so much from this! Thank you for sharing your process ❤ I will continue with a "can do" attitude and remember mistakes are how you develop your skills
YES! Me too... Truly very important for comfort & sustainability & not to be too obvious, less strain on the environment. & pocketbook for energy consumption. I really appreciated how Shaun shared this, especially since often the focus is only on what we can see, the finishes & furniture & layout (which are also very clever & fun...)!
I love that you followed the original tour with this deep dive on the process and cost - as someone is just starting their own renovation, this has been incredibly insightful, inspiring and motivating - I am going to try to embrace the can-do attitude!
A very interesting format, thank you for showing how everything was done and what problems had to be solved during the repair process. The guy is great, he has golden hands, he created a beautiful and functional interior.
Loved this video! I really enjoyed the relaxed format and hearing from someone who isn't an architect. It's really useful seeing someone breaking down costs and showing the processes they used with materials. And love that he rented his tools and used secondhand materials! Much more useful than people showing off apartments they haven't lived in.
Absolutely love his place. Glad to see that everything he did was for a practical reason for a better living space. He has some great friends and dad to help him out! The pistachio green is an awesome choice.
I sooooo can relate to this guy. Last year I went through the same thing and It leaves you a little traumatized by the experience. I bet it must be awesome to just pay people to do it and hand you the key after everything is done, but it takes a lot of strenght to do this, mentally most of the time. The amount of work he put on this, makes it even more special. That shower is a hole experience, it looks really beautiful. Probably will evolve to an even better place in the future, I bet. Ps. Also, LOVE THIS FORMAT. Not to sound shady, but most of the time, people on this channel speak like robots, and Its so refreshing to see this change.
probably my favorite NTS video to date! i really enjoyed the format and getting a peak behind the curtain into the process. it inspires me for future renovations. more of this please! it felt much more engaging too
So happy to see a real story of someone doing it on the budget without a lot of knowledge. "I came to realize maybe I'm not a perfectionist" - is what I can say about myself, too, after purchasing a property, attempting to fix the issues that bothered me a lot when I moved in and gradually accepting the imperfections. I have a dent on my fridge (Stainless steel Samsung, lol), that I also covered with a calendar. Not going to replace it just because of the dent.
I love his DIY approach. I did the same with my apartment although I did not renovate it from the scratch, it was renovated and looked ok (although I don't like the bland tiles but there is nothing I can do about it because it's rented) but I went to the hardware store for example and asked if they had any flooring for sale and they *gifted* me quite some cork click-parquet with two different designs. One with finer cork pieces and one with bigger ones and I made a little design "island" with the bigger pattern under the kitchen table and it looks perfect. Gifted! 👍🏻 And cork is such a cosy material. Natural and simple. My Dad and me layed the floor and I can totally relate to the fear of cutting out the space for the sink and the stove in the kitchen... You need to subtract 1cm or so from the outline so that your appliances don't fall through the hole. I died a million times on that day. 😄
This is my first time finding another person who actually found the IKEA Online Kitchen Planner to be useful for purchase outside IKEA! I actually saved 50% from my kitchen budget because of that kitchen planner. Usually customers get free 1-hour kitchen consultation with IKEA specialist where essentially the staff is going to help you draw up the plan and printout the picking list for the warehouse on the same planner. Because I already drew mine, I got an actual consultation where she recommended cheaper series that matched my measurements, gave me the measurements where to put the sink, got rid of the plumbing kit and sink from the list and ended up with half of what I budgeted to spend. I was grateful for her help.
Really dig this format. As a home owner myself, I love to see a more honest experience about renovating cost and thought process behind DIY projects. All the regrets and what can be improved on the next time. Please have more of this kind of format please!
Would love to see a balance of this style and the million dollar spaces 😂 seeing this DIY, second hand space is inspiring for me because it's actually achievable
Done an amazing job but the only tidbit I would've recommended is instead of using glasswooll or whatever mineral wool that was would've been to use a natural insulation such as woodfibre, hemp or sisal. Natural insulations have much higher specific heat capacity and therefore can absorb more heat and therefore it takes longer for heat from outside getting in and is particularly good at reducing overheating. They're also just way more pleasant to work with.
Really loved this episode, it's unique because of his DIY story. Excited to see his can do attitude. I can see his positive character and energy based on the help from his friends
I'm a lamp-person, also. I only use my overhead lights to enter a darkened room safely and then turn on the table or floor lamps. Even with a "yellow" (warm/soft) bulb(s) in an overhead fixture it still isn't as warm and welcoming (to me, personally) as the light cast by table or floor fixtures or even wall sconces. That's just me...
What a lovely space for a single person! It doesn't feel claustrophobic and you have everything you need. Well, maybe just sharing the washing machine is a minus for me (but that's because I've never lived somewhere where it did not have a washing machine in the unit). Other than that pretty good job for a DIY!!!
This guy is funny and it seems like he had a realistic view of what he could do with his budget. Good on him for taking on most of the work! I's want to be his friend.
All good intention but the other comments appear to berate previous NTS format. All I am going to say is that it is refreshing to other aspect of NTS living and this video is an example of that refreshing side.
Love this type of videos more than the usuals! You could see life and not only the architectural or "creation". Good job with this and hope to see more like this in the future!!!!
It's very spacious and warm. I love everything, except maybe the mushrooms poster, but as you have a Freitag bag and a KeepCup, that compensates.😌 Anyway, exactly what I visualize when I imagine an apartment in Melbourne, well done!👏
Really nice video. I would have placed the fridge where his shelves are but that‘s a personal thing. Besides, his entrance cupboard has given me an idea for my own home
Facinating!!! Thank you for this. And the energy efficient tips were so interesting. I live in a smaller apartment than this one. I might look into the wall thermal tips. Especially as one of my two external walls and FULL WEST eeppp haha. Oh and for fridges, I know you like your fridge, but I opted for two “bar fridges”, one a fridge and the other a freezer. Then I put them under the kitchen bench and really hid them. It makes such a difference if your living space is also your kitchen.

Fantastic small space with character, warmth and a story. On a tight budget too. Shaun, thank you for sharing. And yes you could make this a career!. All the best. Great place to live.
This is wonderful to see someone who is not an architect speaking about the process and the costs. Love it and he's done a great job.

@@Rhallyson Oh, no! I'm going to be looking to hire an architect in a year. Will you please give me some tips on what I should be looking for? Thanks!
Wow this version of the video is so much better than the typical format. Please release more videos like this.
I agree. Its more genuine and real instead of what it looks like reading a memorized script.
This version definitely offers a fresh and engaging take. More videos like this would be a great idea!

Chiming in to say this format feels very real! The place really feels “lived in”, not a sterile hotel room that was just cleaned and tidied.
This, it’s important to see real places that feel like actual people live there
It probably was just cleaned and tidied knowing it was going to be filmed. 😆
Love the format too.
