A beautiful, talented 25 yo man who delivers heart and 'blue eyed soul' in every performance. This is a cover of a song written in 1955; not the first or the last but the absolute best! This performance was even better than the studio cut which charted twice. Bobby always gave us the icing on the cake. He never didappoints. Bobby had good dance moves too. RIP Robert Lee Hatfield (1940-2003) you are midded.

The most impressive thing is how it just flows from him without any visible effort at all.

Just a quick comment. For people that haven't heard that song before, it was a story (lyrics) about somebody incarcerated and wanting to get back to the love of his life. If you listen to it again, think of someone stuck in prison, alone, waiting their time, and missing their love. Listen to it with that in mind. Also remember that this was a live performance. No studio retakes here.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
In 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

1965, Andy Williams Show. Before auto tune. Just a man with a four-octave vocal range and a mic. Better than that, he was a rare counter tenor who could sing the high notes without sounding like a falsetto. Lastly, he had such vocal control, he didn't need a vocal coach. It was all about his natural talent.

Sigh. I was 15 in 1965. Today I’m 71 and this song still brings me to tears! Bless you for sharing the Righteous Brothers just now. In 1971, I began a relationship with a musician which lasted 17 years, until he died of cancer. He performed in clubs playing a grand piano and singing and over all those years he would gift me with Unchained Melody at unexpected times.

This Bobby Hatfield version is the best version. Try You've Lost that Loving Feeling or Soul & Inspiration to hear both Bobby and Bill Medley together.
Also, this is him nervous. He suffered from stage fright AND his parents were in the audience.

This was live on the Andy Williams show there was no do overs just his gorgeous voice and a small microphone no do overs just his voice from the heavens above. His performance was effortless, smooth and sheer perfection. Many Artists before and after him have done this song but no one will ever do this song better than Bobby Hatfield. HE OWNS THIS SONG. Many fell in love to this song and with him he was gorgeous ❤. I still get goosebumps when I hear him sing this song and I was in school when he did it in 1965.this version is considered the best even todayhis version was pure magic

NJ, CAN YOU BELIEVE A PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS FROM BOBBY HASTFIELD VBACK IN 1965. THIS IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR PLUS". TRULY A GOD GIFTED MAN
BOBBY SUNG THIS SONG SO SMOOTHLY, SOFTLY, SWEETLY, SENSUALLY WITH SOUL GRIPPING PASSION THAT WAS SO PURE, CLEAN, ELEGANT, CLASSY AND POWERFULLY BEAUTIFUL
I HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS OF THIS SONG INCL ELVIS, NEIL DIAMOND, ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK & OTHERS, BUT BOBBY SUNG IT THE BEST - PERIOD. HE TRULY OWNS THIS SONG
I HAVE SEEN MANY GIRL REACTORS AND MOST WERE SO EMOTIONAL OR TEARY OR SPEECHLESS OR OVERWHELMED OR SIMPLY "fell in love" WITH BOBBY & HIS PERFORMANCE.

What makes this the BEST is the instrumental building combined with extraordinary vocal runs that are effortless. This is so emotional it would wake the dead and the end delivers you to an emotional high. Furthermore, Bobby makes it look easy. Everyone wants to try it, but Bobby has the natural talent to bring it home with FEELING. YOU ARE UNCHAINED!!!!

This song was written for the 1955 film Unchained about a convict deciding whether to break out of prison or finish his sentence and return to his love. It was recorded and performed many times before and after Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers, but his is the definitive version. This live performance is so much better than the studio recording, which was a big hit in 1965 and again in 1990 when it was in the movie Ghost. The other "Brother" (they weren't really related) was Bill Medley. To hear both check out the most played on the airwaves song of the 20th century, You've Lost That Loving Feeling.

This is called Blue Eyed Soul. They got their name because they were performing at the show on a military base and a soldier went up to them and said man that was Righteous, Brothers and that's how they got their name.
Family lore cuz I was conceived to this song.
The time zone is PST. Not Pacific Standard time but Pentatonix and their time. Please react to something off their new album if you have them. Happy now, be my eyes, love me when I don't, Seasons of Love what does my all-time favorite from the musical Rent. Very personal to me

Thanks, NJ - this was indeed amazing - and Bobby was reportedly nervous b/c his MOM was in the audience -- nevertheless, I'm sure she was proud -- there is a version that has the "intro" with Bill Medley and Andy Williams... can't be bothered to look for it right now, but it's a little good-natured banter where Bobby says he does this one alone, and Bill says "well, because I didn't know it would be a hit" -- I appreciate your flexibility in listening to old-style stuff -- I am an old lady, myself - remembering my teenage obsession with Queen - when all of my BFF & I high-school compatriots mocked us for liking that "weird" band... lol
