- "I'll be coming home, wait for me" - what a great lyrical song regarding love and time. The vocal range and the ease at which it is sang really does amaze me. It reminds me of a time that has gone by but also the circumstances around it. This is the Righteous Brothers with UNCHAINED MELODY and my reaction to it.

I watched Bobby sing this in 1965 on the Andy Williams show. I'm 72 yrs old and I still get goosebumps when I hear him sing. This is his song! No one will ever sing it like he does. Beautiful raw talent! This is his voice no gimmicks! 💞💞💞💞

The instrumental arrangement by the 'Andy Williams Orchestra may it a point to make the string section prominent in this the best version of composer's Alex North's 'Unchained Melody.'
The beautiful orchestration and 'Bobby Hatfield's' beautiful 'Tenor' voice help to create a masterpiece that will go down in memoriam as the greatest performance of 'Unchained Melody.' Ever!
With this epic performance alone "Bobby Hatfield's legacy will go down as one of the greatest 'Tenors' in music history. May he rest in peace.

I first heard this song at this show as a teen who had gone to the Andy Williams studio with my aunt to see the Osmonds who were pretty regular on Andy Williams show. I was not real happy that the Osmonds were not there until I saw Bobby Hatfield do this song. It was so emotional hearing this song & I became a life long fan. I have heard others do this song but his is the one I remember. During the Vietnam war this song got a lot of airplay & even teens in school had it played for their sweathearts.
Whenever I see someone new to me has reacted to this, I tune in and listen just so I can hear it one more time.

I think the term velvet is often used and somewhat loses its depth. Such a stunning vocal range brings me a sense of grounded reality. Yes it does bring memories, but at the same time, an element of healing.

The quintessential love song. Covered by over 670 people but Bobby Hatfield owns it. Along with Bill Medley make up the greatest duo in history with their hits Souls and Inspiration, You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling, the most played song of the 20th Century.
I to sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983, as we danced to it with our oldest (but at the time 18 months) child. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped.
I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.
Bobby Hatfield had a 4 octave range and perfect pitch. With classical training, he could have been a world class opera tenor. He and Bill Medley both had extensive solo careers and Hatfield truly excelled with his "blue eyed soul" sound. (Btw, the first time that phrase, blue eyed soul, was used was in reference to these two guys.)
He had absolute pitch and a rare counter tenor voice. What a legend.

for our soldiers in Vietnam for their wives and girlfriends that they would be there when…if… they came home. Women still love slow dancing to this song…
When is was playing in the late 60's..a lot of young men were going to the war in Viet Nam .. a lot of separated couples..and yes, time could do so much
Earlier in the live performance, this was on the Andy Williams Show. Andy asked Bill and Bobby about the name 'Righteous Brothers'. Bobby explained, they were playing Down South (in an era when white people weren't listening to Soul music) Bobby said, "A young black soldier stood up and yelled That's Righteous Brother, and they adopted the name."
Also, when Andy asked them to sing their latest song, 'Unchained Melody', Bobby said, "That's me. I do that one."
Andy looked at Bill and asked, "Why?"
Bill sheepishly said, "I didn't think it would be a hit."

I was a young adult in 1965, and when I hear this song, I think of the Vietnam War. So many friends were drafted, and they wondered if their girlfriends or wives would be waiting for them if they made it home.
This is from an appearance on The Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield singing. Later, Andy comes out with the other “brother” Bill Medley. Hatfield passed away, but Medley was still performing in Las Vegas until the shutdown. Who sang the song was determined by a coin toss. Bill was happy that he lost.
Medley sings the closing song in “Dirty Dancing” with Jennifer Warnes.

Bobby and bill medley had an agreement to do a solo song each album hatfield won the toss, this was on b side of their single hung on you, but radios didn't like it so played b side lol, rest is history
This song has been recorded over 600 times. 25 year old Bobby Hatfield is singing. He is considered the best. Even over Elvis. I saw both of them in concert. Wonderful experience. 💗

That's a good point. The orchestra supports and interplays with his singing almost like waves. Bobby Hatfield rehearsed and worked with the orchestra before the show.

fun-fact: I was introduced to this song in the early 1990s ... I've been to a concert of the great, great David Hasselhoff!!! He sang that song live, which he recorded in the late 80s - got that one on vinyl :-) btw: Ddid you know, that David Hasselhoff was born as "David Michael Hasselhoff", so thatÄs why his "Knight Rider"-name became "Michael" ...!? XD

Blue-eyed soul at its best. What an amazing tenor voice Bobby had. Love Angelina's version of this as well. The Righteous Brothers (Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley) were not actually brothers, and got their name when they performed at a marine base in California, and the black marines would call them "righteous brothers." Music really can transform your sense of time. Not only the universal "takes one back to the first time you heard it; where you were: whom you wrote with, but humans have the ability to sing a song in their heads and get the duration correct to within 5% or so. I saw that somewhere and it feels like it matches my experience.
This beautiful song was recorded by other singers, even Elvis, buy no one can match Bobby Hatfield's so perfect rendition. Pure magnificent voice, layered with deep emotion and soul. As much as I know- the song was written for some prison themed movie in the 50s. The brothers version is the best known one. This is Hatfield (I don’t know if I pronounced it right)- he had a much higher voice than the other brother who was singing more in Bass voice. They each had their solo carriers. That’s about everything I can recall now but the song is wonderful and brings back memories for all of us I think.

when he got an inspiration or idea, he called Phil Spector and went
back to the studio to make a change and that is how we got the high
note and verse "I ah ah ah ah really need your love", so glad that he
came up with it
Phil Spector had nothing to do with this song except for claiming credit for it. Bill Medley produced it and Bobby Hatfield created his version of singing it.

Amazing perfection
Bobby sang something like 92 separate notes in this song. What a voice. He had terrible stage fright. That night his mom was in the audience and he was nervous and he had a bit of a cold. Most couldn't sing half that well on their best day. What a legend. Oh, this one was a cover too, but it's the gold standard. His stage fright was so severe, he sometimes got physically sick before performing, and turned to cocaine. It contributed to his death, unfortunatly. RIP Mr, Hatfield.

Although Bobby made the last note look easy, he wasn't certain that he could hit it. If you noticed the smile on Andy William's face after the song was over and the handshake. He knew how unsure Bobby was about that ending.

I know this song was written with a prison movie in mind. But keep in mind 1965 was the Vietnam war. How many men and ladies were separated by the war. Waiting for them to return. Think of the song in this context. it is so moving. The best.

Live band and performance. He and Bill Medley (not real brothers) both wanted to record the single, so they tossed a coin and Bobby Hatfield won. It was meant to be because no one could match this perfection. RIP Bobby.
Bill Medley was there somewhere because this was a concert and, of course, they had songs together. Bobby Hatfield was the right voice for this song. No auto tune in the 60s. It was effortless for him. Sadly Bobby did die in the early 2000s. But his voice and this recording will live on forever.
There have been many remakes but no one compares to Bobby Hatfields version! Imo. His voice was so angelic....his range was unbelievable! No auto tune & Live! What singer can do that?! lol. The way Bobby did! They both did solo songs throughout their careers. A lot of people thought they were black until they saw them..lol.

Thanks, Hap - I know you recently reacted to Angelina Jordan's version - and my comment on that was that "she did almost the exact arrangement as Bobby Hatfield -- although she often changes arrangement to make it her own - I think I sad something like - guess she didn't see the point of changing a perfect arrangement" - anyway she totally hit it all - and in Bobby's LIVE performance here, I understand that he was nervous, b/c his MOM was in the audience..... nevertheless - I'm sure she was proud! (btw, also love Bill Medley, but he simply was not needed on this one... lol) One added comment: he is so EFFORTLESS on those high-reaching notes.... no strain, no sweat - it's as if it's "all in a day's work" - extraordinary!
