I lived through the era when this great music was made. I was 10 years old when I watched this live on Andy Williams. It still gives me chills and tears 58 years later! They FLAT don't make music like this anymore, and I doubt any singer today could match this man's absolutely amazing voice!

Don't forget that there was a lot of rubbish music back in the day too. The music that survived to the present is the best, the cream of the crop. Teenagers have a pre-filtered selection of the best ever recorded music at their fingertips.

My young friend, after 55+ years the performance you just witnessed is still considered by most to be the greatest "live" singing performance ever done. I'm 65 and I can't say that I've seen or heard a better live performance. Being 65, I've seen many great singers too. Thx for reacting to this. It's so much fun for me to see a young man such as yourself who can appreciate the music from the 60's and 70's. Thx

That vocal quality,_the tonal quality, the vibratto, passion, and sincerity, that was Bobby in every song he performed not many artists today can come close to the sheer beauty of this man and his music. Together, ha and Bill were simply the best of the best. And this song, though recorded by many others, will always be " Bobby's Song." You must hear them together. Duo or solo, they were amazing.

I was 10 and had finished my homework and went out to the living room where my Mom had this show on. I was reaching for a book as I was a great reader when this came on. I was mesmerized and just stood there for the whole song. I was introduced to the magic of music.

This is the quintessential version of "Unchained melody" of them all. This performance by Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers and the NBC Orchestra from the 1965 'Andy Williams Show.' Has been considered as the greatest (Live) television performance in history. Written back in 1955 by composer Alex North and Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the prison movie 'Unchained (55).
Their collaborative effort has been sung and performed for 68 years by over 1000 singers and orchestras the world over. It has become one of the most loved ballads ever.
No one has sung this song better than the late great Bobby Hatfield. R.I.P.

This song will always be Bobby's song. Many others have sung it but no one better than Bobby. A flip of a coin was how Bobby got to sing this song and not Bill Medley. It was a correct flip.

Hi! Good for you for being open to hearing music from past generations. This is a HUGE rabbit hole to go down. The music of the 50s and 60s is not to be missed. Today's music would not exist without this. You will also hear music that has not been overly processed by machines and technicians, no use of auto tune. This older music was subsequently purer in tone, clearer, and full of soul. Keep up the good work.

this song in many a TV commercial track and on several movie tracks.... top hit of the century...... has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. none could top the righteous brothers version.....

Great reaction. I'm glad you found the video with Andy Williams introducing the brothers. A lot of reactors start with the video which has Bobby immediately singing. Then they'll keep asking and wondering, "Where are the other brothers?"
BTW, this is live from an old, weekly, hour-long variety program, _The Andy Williams Show._ Andy himself was a singer, starting out in a group with his brothers. This is just as Michael Jackson did decades later.
Also, a big kudos to the Andy Williams orchestra for mastering the music. They probably had less than a week to practice, and yet the result, both musically and voice, is clearly better than the studio version.

Probably mentioned below, but the song was written for a prison movie called "UNchained" in 1955, sung by a black opera singer named Todd Duncan - the clip is on TH-cam. Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke, two black singers, released it in 1955 (also on TH-cam). But this version was the one that knocked it out of the park. Since then, it's been sung by hundreds of singers. None have sung it as well as Bobby.

The original song was for a movie called Unchained (1955). Guy is in prison, his wife wants to bail out of the marriage, this song is asking her to wait for him. This is the best ever recording of this song. No autotune, no flashing lights, no dancers, no huge band blaring the music. PURE TALENT. Enjoyed your reaction, please keep listening to the " boomer" music I don't think you'll regret it.

So glad that you enjoyed this presentation. It was done live, Andy Williams show in 1965. A pure classic, no autotunes. Bobby was a tenor/counter tenor. That's why he was able to hit those notes. A very blessed man with a beautiful voice, god given. After all these years the music still lives on, even though he passed in 2003. He is dearly missed.

And time can do so much--refers to the movie this song came from. The movie came out in the 1950s called Unchained, about a man in prison, hoping his girl was still waiting for him to be released--and worried she might not be waiting because he's been in prison a long time.

You hit on the right video as a nice intro to the righteous brothers, who they are. . the shorter video confuses people like"where's the other brothers?" As if there are more than two. And they think they are real brothers. Really? Bill and Bobby Righteous? Who has a last name like that? duh! From the grave, Bobby has gone viral on the youtube reactor ciruit, thousands of people have discovered the Righteous Brothers, and this particular performance, BETTER than the studio record. You won't hear these inflections and high notes on the record. Bobby's parents were in the audience, and he nailed that high note for his mom who had never heard him sing professionally! Bobby died at age 63 on tour in a hotel room before they were to go onstage, in Kalamazoo MI, just less than an hour from my house! I heard the news and cried...I grew up as a little kid with that music, I was a music teacher, those guys were phenominal. check out their other songs. You get the song, the vibe, the quality. If you're looking for some good stuff to react to, U2, Live where they end the song with "Unchained Melody". th-cam.com/video/hdpyzDAuH60/w-d-xo.html (Ignore the views on this version, "One" is a massive song and U2 is a massive band, they've played live to more people than any artist in history!)
