    Just having some fun here shooting steel through bricks.. Although we didn't get to shoot a ton of arrows through brick it was still fun to see what happened.. One thing to keep in mind about Dan's broadhead opinion at the end: It's about ELK, mechanicals certainly can be plenty effective with lighter skinned animals like whitetail or antelope. But we still feel that a fixed broadhead up front forces you to be tuned and ready to rock.. Also it offers the most forgiveness based on something going less than ideal - TC & DS

      Dan,
      Wish I'd have seen this before elk season. Hit a bull in the scapula and should have blown thru and killed him, instead he was still chasing cows 5 days later. I did kill a small bull with a frontal shot at 20 feet, but the mechanical took so much energy away that I only got 18" of penetration

    • @rattlingjunkie

      @@sb7508 18" is plenty, doesn't sound like anymore penetration would've killed that bull.

    The less moving parts the better. This applies to broadheads, sights, releases, rests, you name it. I'll stick with fixed all day.

    Broadhead integrity and blade sharpness and the ability for that blade to stay sharp after impact are one of the most important factors in a lethal shot along with arrow flight and shot placement. Only thing I’d shoot an expandable on is turkey.

    I’ve bow hunted for almost 20 years and I used fixed blades for the first three years and did fine but my blood trails sucked. I switched to expandables and couldn’t believe the blood trails I was getting. At that time I was running Rage and couldn’t stand the collars that always came off walking through the woods, so after about five years, and never losing a deer, I switched back to a fixed blade. I was successful with the fixed blades again for another three years and never lost a deer but my blood trails went back to shit no matter where I hit them and the deer always went further. One year I put a G5 Montec through the liver and both lungs on a quartering shot and kept watching for the deer to drop but he didn’t, he just kept right on trucking. I gave him about four hours before I went looking for him and the blood trail was mediocre at best. I lost blood at around 100 yards so that finalized the disappoint in my broadhead. Luckily, I know the land, I know how the deer travel and I found the bastard over 260 yards from where I shot him. Between where I lost blood and found him, there was a few drops of blood at around 230 yards and then a small patch about the size of a softball where he must have laid down for a little bit. When I got to him 30+ yards later, he was still alive but couldn’t get up. I waited for about 10 minutes hoping to see his last breath naturally but it didn’t happen so I had to put another one in him. I’m glad I found him, I’m pissed off he suffered for so long, and I’m pissed off at my broadhead. Rapid blood loss is absolutely key no matter if you have good tracking skills or not. The point is a quick, clean death and that only happens with massive amounts of blood on the ground. Needless to say, I’m back to expandables and haven’t had that situation happen again. There is no doubt that a fixed blade is stronger and most of the time it’s argued that they are sharper but I haven’t found that to be the case with a quality expandable. I shoot an 83# bow and a 460gr arrow with tons of kinetic energy and momentum so penetration is a moot point for me. I will gladly buy a new set of expandables every year to get a good clean kill. The tests and arguments everyone has for fixed blades is how tough they are and how far they penetrate. I can care less how many bones or pieces of plywood my broadhead can go through and keep being used after I sharpen it. In my experience with well over 30 successful kills on multiple species, including elk, the expandables put more blood on the ground hands down. There is no debate for me.

I live in Oregon and i just did my first spring bear hunt in that exact same area below hat point in hells canyon. They aren't lying, it is super brutal but awesome country. I spent 3 weeks total in there and a couple other areas and i did kill the only rattlesnake i saw, it was on my way out near the trailhead at the bottom, the locals encourage killing them. As long as its not crazy hot the snakes arent really around. I think you would enjoy a spring bear hunt there, there are creeks everywhere from the snow melt so finding waer isnt an issue and a good amount of bears, getting on them is another story. Mostly color phase but i did see 4 jet black. Saw rams, mtn goats, mulies and plenty of elk. Oh and there is 100% wolves in there, i saw several tracks and i met some people on mules that saw a couple black wolves

    Dan, I love your content and your message, but I have to take issue with you on this experiment. What does shooting through a brick prove? Would a beef side not prove to be a more accurate representation? Also, mechanical broad heads require the same common sense as fixed blades: chose the appropriate blade size and angle based on your poundage and arrow weight. I think there is far more involved in this decision than is portrayed here. That being said, love your videos! ABT!

    No matter what you pick it is all about shot placement. That’s why I pick a mechanical. I have yet to see a fixed blade that will shoot as accurately as my mechanical heads. If you hit a bull in the shoulder with a fixed blade or a mechanical the results are the same. I’d rather shoot the head that is going to hit behind my pin no matter what.

    • @ElkShape
      @ElkShape  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fixed tend to penetrate better.. Results would not be the same. If you hit a bull perfect with any broadhead results should be fine.. We are looking for maximum forgiveness on a less than perfect shot, and have found that a solid fixed broadhead does the job best.. With that being said you should shoot whatever works best for you and you have the most confidence in - TC

      Better shot placement vs better penetration... I’ll take the better shot placement.

    Not a very good test shooting thru a brick unless you are testing strength only. You also used different type bricks for the different broadheads. I only use expandable broadheads and have never lost an animal hunting whitetail here and many animals in Africa. I also shoot fixed so I’m not against them. They do seem to be stronger if you want to re-use them. I have had several expandable break after passing thru the animals and pledging into the dirt.

      That first brick you shot is pretty much the softest brick there is. Cool idea for a test get some 1/2 MDF board and put a cheap ham behind it then measure penetration. 1/2 mdf would kind of simulate a whitetail shoulder blade

    “It didn’t expand...” well no duh. You’re hitting a brick.....a brick....they’re not design to cut hard, dried clay blocks. That being said, I was very impressed by the damaged brick the fixed split in half. Not ruining an expensive arrow is always a plus. But come on, make a better test. For example, hang a couple layers of tissue machine felt, in front of a sheet of plywood or something like that.

    • @rchunting2579
      @rchunting2579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Lind your comment makes sense but why wouldn’t you want a broadhead that performs against a brick vs one that doesn’t. Also plywood is very inconsistent, there are other methods to this test but when spending your hard earned money on a broadhead I personally would rather have one that performs well on a brick than one that doesn’t.

    • @ericlind3569
      @ericlind3569 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      RC Hunting, if you’re using crappy big box store plywood, then I guess you could be right about plywood layers being inconsistent. But, being a cabinetmaker by trade, if you got a sheet of 11 ply Baltic Birch or some comparable cabinet grade plywood with no voids between the layers, you find a very consistent test model. To be fair, I totally agree with your sentiments that it’s better to be sure your equipment will not fail, given how much time/effort/money it costs to elk hunt. Where’s all this going? I guess with all this typing I don’t even know. What I do know is I enjoy your channel, I’m anxiously awaiting the 2022 season as that’s the soonest I can return to the Colorado forests. I guess “ABT” in my case means “Always Be Talking” about archery and elk. Good luck this season & how about doing a review/comparison on back quivers?!? I personally don’t know how you guys can stand shooting with bow mounted quivers...cheers!!

    I like your guys channel great info but abt always be tinkering is not a good moto people need to tinker less and just shoot there bow more alot of times people tinker to try and get there groups tighter when its not the bow or there equipment its the shooter so LST ...lets stop tinkering

      ABT in the pursuit of better.. Shooting more reps won't always make you better, practicing bad form and processes isn't productive.. Tinkering isn't referring to only gear, it means don't settle, keep working 🤘 - TC

    The reason the mechanical blades did not deploy is because they are opened by the hide of your prey. A brick wil not allow this.

    Translation:
    a) Mechanical if "all circumstances beyond your control are perfect" (aka "never"😉).
    b) Fixed if you are a good shooter who's patient and that can wait for an ethical shot.
