My Dad was an engineer at Ford for 26 yrs. He used to bring home a 1968 Fairlane that was a test sled, it had a 300 six in it. With a 4 bbl! They put all kinds of parts on it, brakes, shocks springs, alternators, power steering pumps, wheels, tires, real axels you name it, and would beat the crap out of it, the only thing that didn't break was that 300 6!!! Thanks for doing this video series it brings back some fond memories of my Dad and Ford and the 300!
My late Father-in-law was a mechanic and a truck driver. He was also a dedicated Bowtie guy. He died over 35 years ago. He told me once, the Ford 300 was the best truck engine ever manufactured.
My dad was a mechanic at lacygne power plant for kcpl I believe 34 years he worked there until he passed away. He drove a 1983 f100 300 straight six 3 speed column shift from Clinton Mo to lacygne ks 5 days a week. At 780000 miles the state of Mo deamed it unsafe to be driven on a public roadway due to rust. At that time he sold it for 600 bucks to a farmer it had the original never rebuilt engine the never rebuilt manual transmission and original clutch.
Had a 1973 F150 with the 300 and 3 on the tree, had tons of torque! I don't know the final ratio but I could take off on level ground in 3rd gear only issue is I couldn't pass a gas station only got around 8mpg!
You can tell this that gentleman is wise. He's always asking questions, not to look down on the young man or to question him, but to improve his knowledge on the subject. I'm getting ready to go to a mechanics and machining school. I hope my instructors are half as helpful and wise as him. Props to that young man for knowing the answers too!
Criminally underrated engine, it's hard to stand out in the inline 6 world die to a lot of other good ones but the Ford does, something like the timing gears just shows how it was engineered to be dependable
You're right on the longevity of this motor. The company my dad worked for had a fleet of ford vans with the 300 6 in them and would sell them after 300k to 400k miles on them and you could see their new owners still driving them around town years later.
@Ed Miller the 88hp number is from the pure industrial application. the version in the pickups made anywhere from 105-117hp carbed (FI made about 190hp)

I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled them in the shop all the time for major repairs, anything that company owns with wheels with the exception of new tractors are the biggest pieces of shit on the road! scheduled for repairs, parts on order, in other words we don't want to fix it until it breaks, then we still don't want to fix it right. The hub I work at are almost all v8 either LS based or whatever Ford engine is in the Ford powered big brown turds. They've been scrapping the diesel based package cars once something goes wrong with them it seems, I see very few of those left and there's a whole pile ADA behind the shop at any given time. I've seen quite a few get engine replacements and those ones weren't even that old. Still haven't seen anything best the 24 valve cummins in the old 40,000 hour yard goat though! that thing was a pile to drive but ran great.
I really appreciate you guys doing stuff with the Ford 300. Father had a 79 F100 with the 300 i6 and to this day days it's the best engine ever made, reliability wise.

i had a 1990 e350 with the 300 and a C6... no top speed but massive amounts of torque... motor blew at 140k, the "composit" timing gears teeth all wore out ... stupid thing was basically wood chips and glue
I sold a 93 F150 with a 300 and M5R2 trans, about 5 years ago. It was originally my Granpa's. He bou g.j t it new in Buffalo NY, and gave it to my dad in '99. I bought it from dad in '04. When I sold it, it has 722,000 miles on it. It was the original motor and trans, with just replacement parts like the alternator, water pump, distributor, etc. The guy I sold it to is still driving it, and now it's got 780,000 on it, and it still runs great.
As a retired mechanic I'm loving your immaculate shop! You guys do a great job with presentation. No bs! Just straight facts. Again, great presentation!
Walter Palmer: Plus, as I commented, due to the fact these engines have five or seven main bearings as long as you perform the routine oil changes and maintenance you can expect to see 350K miles; mine has over 285K and is still running strong with only having the head milled and a new set of valves, etc. just because I figured 'why not' so put them in while I had it opened up, plus a new fuel pump, water pump, 100 amp alternator, two row radiator and an all new brake system. It sees use a few times a week and every time I stop at a red light or to get gas, always have at least two or three people who will tell me about thier Father or them owning a Falcon, which was my first purchase in 1965 of a '63 Falcon Futura after I got married.
I love my Old 1974 Ford F250 with its DRW's and granny gear. I love its simple 300 i6, single barrel Stromberg and points distributor. Although Its computer is many years older than the F'truck and may have a few blown fuses it keeps it going suck, squeeze, bang, blow. i had this engine in my 84 F150. put an aftermarket intake maniford and Holley 4-bbl 600 cfm carb on it, found a NOS exhaust manifold for an 87 efi, new Y pipe and exhaust, and this baby roared. what these guys are doing is amazing.
@@traxxasrcfunthey sure don't. That gas was as at least 6 years old because that's when the truck moved last and you could tell by the smell of the exhaust totally rancid. The carb wasn't even bolted on properly lol, I couldn't believe it started and idled after it warmed up.
I think the cold weather makes them magical... I'm approaching 200 miles without oil pressure and it hasn't been above freezing in at least 4 months (MN).
My 78 had an inline 6 where all 6 rod caps were loose. Only way you could tell anything was wrong was because of a small tapping sound. It still ran like a champ
So i spoke with promaxx where they got the cylinder head from... they sell new efi heads that flow better and for some more moneys they will install the larger valves shown on this episode and they can even CNC port them for you as well flowing 218cfm which that head is gonna be on the turbo build
@@bmstylee the 300 inline 6 is getting super popular. With gas prices rising again there is alot of talk about swapping these in place of 5.0 v8s with a turbo.

I am thinking about doing the same thing, or raising (and re-shaping) the intake port 3/4"-1" on the efi head by milling the wide open surface above the ports and brazing on some square stock for the extra meat, and milling some plugs to braze into the old floor of the ports. Press-fit some dowels to fill in the unusable old manifold bolt holes, and tunnel porting the exhaust ports. Either way it's going to be a lot of work
300 I6 was THE best, most reliable engine I ever owned. Had it in a 1996 F150 I bought new, drove it 490k miles, replaced only an A/C compressor before I sold the truck in 2016 and the guy who bought it drives it to this day in 2023.
My 1987 Ford van Econoline had a inline six 4.9 l in it. We'll use it for all sorts of things we used it to haul a boat we use it to haul a trailer full of off-road toys, it was a true Workhorse

Awesome to see a bunch of work thrown into these old boat anchor engines, I love it! The results are incredible too, never would have thought a 300 would make this much power without forced induction.
Love this build. Once I’m done w my 87 Turbo T I would love to build a 77 four door Ford with a 300 inline 6 and compound turbo set up. Can’t wait to see the power it makes w the turbo.
It's pretty funny that you think of a straight 6 as an oddball engine. They are inherently better than a V type engine except for weight and length. If done right they can perform with any V engine of similar design parameters. BMW still sells and races inline 6 powered sports cars. And they sound so very good when made to perform properly.
Don’t mock what you don’t understand. You sound like older people mocking fuel injection. I managed 58 mpg with an 80ci Harley and made excellent power. And a camaro with a 383 stocker and could knock down 19 to 21 mpg both with carburetor’s both where daily driven and reliable. I use fuel injection now, but just because I’m lazy and it’s easier. Wouldn’t claim it to be better.
Yeah injection is superior, but for the guy who doesn't have the cash to get that setup in a carb is perfect. Slap it on, connect to stock fuel pump, dial in your ignition and you're away. Good carbs (ie Holley Brawler, Edelbrock) come with an electric auto choke, too, so you don't need to worry about cold starts. Just turn the key, give one pump and start.
I honestly LOOOVE this show, it’s the reason why I wanted to become a technician. I know, I know. There’s lots to learn about cars. These guys are definitely experts.
Brother and i had one, we freshened up few things, pulled the Carter 1 barrel for 2 barrel, woke it up nicely, 3 on the tree, lots of low end grunt. Miss that motor..
I had a 300 in my 1977 ford truck I drove that truck for years with a wrist pain knocking in it didn't smoke didn't use oil . when I did rebuild it haf of the Piston came off with the oil ring it was something to see .one tuff motor !!!!!!!!

I remember article in old hotrod mag where a guy cut up 2 Cleveland heads and welded them together and bolted them on a 300 six. It was strictly a drag engine experiment but I've been intrigued with the 300 ever since.
Been running with the 300cc 6 cyl. engine now for like 43 years in 3 different Ford Vans. Always dependable and economical to maintain. Long lasting motors. Recently bought a used 1995/300CC motor off of facebook marketplace for $200 that had 76,000 miles on it. It runs great. Why would Ford stop making such a good engine is beyond me. I always wanted a crate motor but never found one. Someone needs to save all these old 300's for the future.
A friend once bought decades ago a Chevrolet with a 'stove bolt ' engine. I ran okay for a awhile and then it didn't run and made a lot of noise. Well, turns out that the previous owner had replaced a couple of insert bearings between the crankshaft and rods with pieces cut from a leather belt. My friend was disturbed about this and used bad words.

Right out of highschool, l worked at local wholesaler delivering mom and pop gas stations, restaurants and general stores around northwest Ohio. It was great job only making a buck an hour. We drove new 1972 Econoline vans with the 300 six and 3 on the tree. We drove them hard and fast and they didn't complain a bit. I also remember a E/SR Ford T that ran at the local dragstrip that had a 300 Ford six. It hooked hard and ran real strong and beat up on many small block Chevys. The sound I'm hearing as you run the dyno reminds me of the wild sound that little race car made. It surprised everyone who saw it run.
Had two F 150's with straight six's. Put 500,000 Km on the first in 18 years and now my second is in the driveway for sale with 427,000 Km after 22 years. 1981 and 1996 model years with the same body style. Best motor ever
Not anymore. The re wont be anything besides electric motors in uos trucks, fed ex trucks, amazon trucks, etc etc.....in just a couple years. Anyone that doesmt believe internal combustion engines are being phased out is fooling themselves. Believe me guys.....they are going away and its coming quick. I work in the auto manufacturing world in R&d, testing. I wish people would wake up and take notice. It makes me sick. Every day I try and not think about it but, ts difficult and it makes my stomach twist into knots. We need to fight this people. Everything we love is getting ready to disappear.
My first vehicle was (is) a 1985 F150 with the 300. Bought it at age 16, 2 years ago yesterday, and been driving it ever since. Never let me down. Only issues I've had is the choke sticking and my stupid self running it out of fuel.
I did a very similar build about 10 years ago, but my block was pretty rough and didn't clean up until 4.080. I ran .030 over 360 pistons, they're a hair taller, and kept the stock intake and exhaust initially. I put that into a 78 E150 shorty with a C6 and 2.75 rear gear, which did surprisingly well. I ran it down I 15 to SLC at 75, which it did easily, and it turned in 16mpg for the trip. No overheating thanks to the incredibly thick bore walls on these engines.
Y’all don’t understand the anticipation I’m having waiting on this turbo video it’s never been done publicly like this and people are gonna know what’s up then. I’m dailying an 88 with the efi 5spd 4wd an she’s rollin 3.08’s on 32’ like it was meant to be keep in mind still has cats an egr and smog, deleting soon. I have another 88 same combo but it’s granny 4spd that was my first truck, ran it on 5 cylinders for a month one time cause I broke off number 6 spark plug in a removal. Jus unplugged the injector an went on with it. Got the plug out a month later and I wasn’t “easy on it” as you’d say during the drive for 5 as I called it. New plug in with new wires ran like a new one. DOOMS DAY MACHINE!!!!
Love your engine builds. As to being bullet proof, I had a 2 liter Pinto that went to Florida & back from Cincy getting an honest 27-28MPG. It was only after we returned did we discover the distributor shaft wasn't getting lubricated.
Having just watched this rebuild, my questions may sound a little ‘off-base’, but here goes. You fitted a new head onto this engine. Would a new head with the intake on opposite side to the exhaust been an option? Would this have produced better results? just wondering, because I have the thoughts that a ‘cross-flow’ head is better.
Pat's really letting that slicked back mullet show more nowadays. And the pens in the pocket are probably worth an extra 25 hp on every engine build. I think they should keep him around.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I’ve been looking for an efficient gasoline powered low end torque monster application for my 68’ Bronco, and had been on the fence between the 300 i6 and a V8. This episode more than just nudged me off that fence, and I gotta say this will now be my choice. Now for the bigger question....would you guys build it for me?
Good to see that people are putting out performance parts for this engine. I had a 1995 F-150 with this engine about 15 years ago; wanted to build it but parts were almost impossible to find. If I can find another one it would be the best of both worlds - mechanical upgrades plus EFI.
The Ford 300 found it's home in vans , pickups, and industrial apps. It always had more torque than HP. My brother had one in his van. It pulls like crazy. Designed not for speed but lots of work.
I just wanted to comment that Grove used the 300 cid in there 15 and 18 ton cranes to power the hydraulic pump! I am from Manitoba Canada and it gets brutal cold and that old girl will start just like downtown I still have a 18 tonner with the super six and she still runs like a champ I have had those 300’s in half tons cranes pumps they are very reliable so when I saw your video I thought it was pretty cool! Thanks guys 👍

John, I don't know about that my 73 ended up with over 500,000 before rebuild; it's all in how you take care for it!

So i spoke with promaxx where they got the cylinder head from... they sell new efi heads that flow better and for some more moneys they will install the larger valves shown on this episode and they can even CNC port them for you as well flowing 218cfm which that head is gonna be on the turbo build
There are guys that make their own heads for these. One guy I been watching cut 2 LS heads and welded them together.
There is no aftermarket head. Probably because there is no market. Simple economics buddy.
@@bmstylee the 300 inline 6 is getting super popular. With gas prices rising again there is alot of talk about swapping these in place of 5.0 v8s with a turbo.

I am thinking about doing the same thing, or raising (and re-shaping) the intake port 3/4"-1" on the efi head by milling the wide open surface above the ports and brazing on some square stock for the extra meat, and milling some plugs to braze into the old floor of the ports. Press-fit some dowels to fill in the unusable old manifold bolt holes, and tunnel porting the exhaust ports.
Either way it's going to be a lot of work
Great job sprucing up that old six! The valve cover should have been painted Ford blue though to make it stand out.
300 I6 was THE best, most reliable engine I ever owned. Had it in a 1996 F150 I bought new, drove it 490k miles, replaced only an A/C compressor before I sold the truck in 2016 and the guy who bought it drives it to this day in 2023.
Definitely my favorite of the builds you guys have done. Can't wait for the turbo!!

My 1987 Ford van Econoline had a inline six 4.9 l in it. We'll use it for all sorts of things we used it to haul a boat we use it to haul a trailer full of off-road toys, it was a true Workhorse
always a sign of a true professional when they have a caulking gun of silicone to use, I still use bolts and gaskets to hold and seal parts

I had a 240 and three 300 Fords. They were all about indestructible. Cool to see somebody build one up for fun.

It's pretty funny that you think of a straight 6 as an oddball engine. They are inherently better than a V type engine except for weight and length. If done right they can perform with any V engine of similar design parameters. BMW still sells and races inline 6 powered sports cars. And they sound so very good when made to perform properly.

Cause pat the gas 15 times before they turn the key!! Run it 10 miles before they push the choke back in

Don’t mock what you don’t understand. You sound like older people mocking fuel injection. I managed 58 mpg with an 80ci Harley and made excellent power. And a camaro with a 383 stocker and could knock down 19 to 21 mpg both with carburetor’s both where daily driven and reliable. I use fuel injection now, but just because I’m lazy and it’s easier. Wouldn’t claim it to be better.
Carburetor: lives mechanically
Fuel injector: voltage is too low and I've burned out the FI computer
Yeah injection is superior, but for the guy who doesn't have the cash to get that setup in a carb is perfect. Slap it on, connect to stock fuel pump, dial in your ignition and you're away. Good carbs (ie Holley Brawler, Edelbrock) come with an electric auto choke, too, so you don't need to worry about cold starts. Just turn the key, give one pump and start.

Brother and i had one, we freshened up few things, pulled the Carter 1 barrel for 2 barrel, woke it up nicely, 3 on the tree, lots of low end grunt. Miss that motor..

I had a 300 in my 1977 ford truck I drove that truck for years with a wrist pain knocking in it didn't smoke didn't use oil . when I did rebuild it haf of the Piston came off with the oil ring it was something to see .one tuff motor !!!!!!!!
I remember a magazine back in the day. it was called 6=8 and there were performance parts for any inline six you could name in it...... this takes me back!

I remember article in old hotrod mag where a guy cut up 2 Cleveland heads and welded them together and bolted them on a 300 six.
It was strictly a drag engine experiment but I've been intrigued with the 300 ever since.
Been running with the 300cc 6 cyl. engine now for like 43 years in 3 different Ford Vans. Always dependable and economical to maintain. Long lasting motors. Recently bought a used 1995/300CC motor off of facebook marketplace for $200 that had 76,000 miles on it. It runs great. Why would Ford stop making such a good engine is beyond me. I always wanted a crate motor but never found one. Someone needs to save all these old 300's for the future.

Guy brought me his bike that wouldn't start. Had a rag stuffed in the carburetor.
I had an old Wheel Horse lawn tractor that you had to stuff a rag in the air intake of the carburetor to get it to start.

A friend once bought decades ago a Chevrolet with a 'stove bolt ' engine. I ran okay for a awhile and then it didn't run and made a lot of noise. Well, turns out that the previous owner had replaced a couple of insert bearings between the crankshaft and rods with pieces cut from a leather belt. My friend was disturbed about this and used bad words.

Right out of highschool, l worked at local wholesaler delivering mom and pop gas stations, restaurants and general stores around northwest Ohio. It was great job only making a buck an hour. We drove new 1972 Econoline vans with the 300 six and 3 on the tree. We drove them hard and fast and they didn't complain a bit. I also remember a E/SR Ford T that ran at the local dragstrip that had a 300 Ford six. It hooked hard and ran real strong and beat up on many small block Chevys. The sound I'm hearing as you run the dyno reminds me of the wild sound that little race car made. It surprised everyone who saw it run.

They did a stroked 5.9 build a while back. I don't remember if it was a later model block or not. I was thinking it was an LA series engine.

Had two F 150's with straight six's. Put 500,000 Km on the first in 18 years and now my second is in the driveway for sale with 427,000 Km after 22 years. 1981 and 1996 model years with the same body style. Best motor ever

Not anymore. The re wont be anything besides electric motors in uos trucks, fed ex trucks, amazon trucks, etc etc.....in just a couple years. Anyone that doesmt believe internal combustion engines are being phased out is fooling themselves. Believe me guys.....they are going away and its coming quick. I work in the auto manufacturing world in R&d, testing. I wish people would wake up and take notice. It makes me sick. Every day I try and not think about it but, ts difficult and it makes my stomach twist into knots. We need to fight this people. Everything we love is getting ready to disappear.
Ford needs to nix the ecoboost and make a modern version of the I6 300.

My first vehicle was (is) a 1985 F150 with the 300. Bought it at age 16, 2 years ago yesterday, and been driving it ever since. Never let me down. Only issues I've had is the choke sticking and my stupid self running it out of fuel.
I did a very similar build about 10 years ago, but my block was pretty rough and didn't clean up until 4.080. I ran .030 over 360 pistons, they're a hair taller, and kept the stock intake and exhaust initially. I put that into a 78 E150 shorty with a C6 and 2.75 rear gear, which did surprisingly well. I ran it down I 15 to SLC at 75, which it did easily, and it turned in 16mpg for the trip. No overheating thanks to the incredibly thick bore walls on these engines.

I had this same 300 engine in my 85 F- 150 and loved it plus it was a 4 speed shifter 4WD,,,loved the video.
This is my favorite ford motor. Its unassuming but it just works. tower of power.

Y’all don’t understand the anticipation I’m having waiting on this turbo video it’s never been done publicly like this and people are gonna know what’s up then. I’m dailying an 88 with the efi 5spd 4wd an she’s rollin 3.08’s on 32’ like it was meant to be keep in mind still has cats an egr and smog, deleting soon. I have another 88 same combo but it’s granny 4spd that was my first truck, ran it on 5 cylinders for a month one time cause I broke off number 6 spark plug in a removal. Jus unplugged the injector an went on with it. Got the plug out a month later and I wasn’t “easy on it” as you’d say during the drive for 5 as I called it. New plug in with new wires ran like a new one. DOOMS DAY MACHINE!!!!
My first truck was an 83 f250 with a 300 from factory, c6 rear wheel drive. Tough as hell, still have it 🇨🇦
Love your engine builds. As to being bullet proof, I had a 2 liter Pinto that went to Florida & back from Cincy getting an honest 27-28MPG. It was only after we returned did we discover the distributor shaft wasn't getting lubricated.
Do you ever measure fuel usage?
I would be curious to see if the spacer saved or cost more fuel.

You fitted a new head onto this engine.
Would a new head with the intake on opposite side to the exhaust been an option?
Would this have produced better results?

Not really, the pushrods are in the way.
My first two pick-ups had the 300. I loved the fact I could peel out on our dirt road for a couple blocks.

Pat's really letting that slicked back mullet show more nowadays. And the pens in the pocket are probably worth an extra 25 hp on every engine build. I think they should keep him around.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I’ve been looking for an efficient gasoline powered low end torque monster application for my 68’ Bronco, and had been on the fence between the 300 i6 and a V8. This episode more than just nudged me off that fence, and I gotta say this will now be my choice. Now for the bigger question....would you guys build it for me?
As a 70 year old, who learned ‘engines’ by taking apart and working on 60’s era motors, this takes me back to my youth
Good to see that people are putting out performance parts for this engine. I had a 1995 F-150 with this engine about 15 years ago; wanted to build it but parts were almost impossible to find. If I can find another one it would be the best of both worlds - mechanical upgrades plus EFI.

The Ford 300 found it's home in vans , pickups, and industrial apps. It always had more torque than HP. My brother had one in his van. It pulls like crazy. Designed not for speed but lots of work.
I just wanted to comment that Grove used the 300 cid in there 15 and 18 ton cranes to power the hydraulic pump! I am from Manitoba Canada and it gets brutal cold and that old girl will start just like downtown I still have a 18 tonner with the super six and she still runs like a champ I have had those 300’s in half tons cranes pumps they are very reliable so when I saw your video I thought it was pretty cool! Thanks guys 👍
