I've taken 2 of these apart about 4 times each now, and yes- These will run 70 mph on the highway with a half ton of sand in the bed, with 2 cracked pistons, all rings seized, and not 2 squirts of oil. Then I re-re-built it with 5 new pistons and all new rings, bearings, and a HO oil pump. Absolutely love turning the key on my '85 F-150. Runs smooth as a sewing machine, even the air conditioning holds a charge and works.

It's fun, seeing someone finally giving the "Big Six" the recognition it deserves! Good job, guys! I had a 1982 Ford Econoline van, with this engine in it, and I agree: This is the best inline six cylinder engine on the planet. I gained a lot of top end torque, by merely installing a bigger exhaust and down-pipe on the stock exhaust manifold, paired with the factory intake and mono-jet carburetor.(Identical to what was on your engine when you got it) I had the 4-speed overdrive transmission, which was created by changing the 3rd gear ratio to create the overdrive. That meant, the transmission acted like it was a 5-speed transmission, missing 3rd. With the huge RPM gap between 2nd and 3rd, it would "run out of breath" in second, before I could get the RPM high enough, to be in its torque curve in 3rd. The big exhaust solved that, by giving it enough torque band, to cover that spread. I was able to use it to pull a travel trailer.

I built a 300 with a 2-barrel intake, 302 carb, headers, and a torque cam. It twisted the 1/2 ton drive line out of my truck a piece at a time in 6 months. I had to replace Everything with 3/4 ton Dana Posi, 1-ton granny trans, 11-inch dump truck clutch and a custom driveshaft. Two years later I had to weld, box and fish plate my frame back together to live behind that engine. I NEVER had any use for a V-8 after that.

Had I known you were going to turbocharge the build:
Borrowing from Pittsburgh Power-I would have stuck with lower compression ratio pistons. This is the Pittsburgh Power method of reducing the peak pressures but still building a lot of horsepower big semi truck diesel engines.
I would love to see you at 20 lb of boost would be on 8 1/2 to 1 compression ratio pistons. I had a 1992 Ford Probe with eight and a half to 1 compression pistons and it was a slug. I was one of the 90%. The lucky 10% had a turbocharged version of this car with the same engine and it rocked! Especially by 1992 standards.
Next Ford 300 l6 build see if you can build it to be turbocharged from the get-go. Attempt to get a more sturdy head gasket.
It's so incredible that you're almost getting two to one horsepower to cubic inches!

2:16 built like that is something a normal person can do in there garage its reasonable and 270 hp and 338 pound feet of torque would run pretty good in an old 4x4 F-150 i think the aluminum head and cam did most of that! pretty cool

A bought a 1995 f150 with a 300 4.9 out in Denver Colorado, I did oil change thermostat belt got on the truck and drove it all the way to Californian and roll this day I’ve been using the truck as my daily driver. I’ve had the truck for near one year now and I can say I love it it’s a five speed sheet bed 4x4 .. dude if you guys would raffle that engine or you ever want to sell it I hope you pic me to win it lol.. I never want to sell this truck I want it to stay in the family for ever my dad had one when I was younger and he passed it down to my older brother I always wanted one because my older brother taught me how to drive stick shift on it so every time we work with our pop’s I would go get lunch for all of us on that beautiful blues truck 🛻. Now I want to pass my truck to my son or daughter .. I love 95 and down Ford trucks and it better be a straight six.. if you’d like to give that beautiful engine a home I promise it’ll always stay in the family.. good bless us all and America... man you guys are awesome thanks next you should build a dodge slanted six....

I love the straight 6's, currently in love with the 98' Volvo s90 but also had an older late 80's Mercedes Benz 3.2 that just rocked but the 300 started it all in a 70's ford 4x4 tow truck... glad to see it

Walk softly and create your own atmosphere... :)
I think a follow-up is in order. Head studs, good gasket and more spring!
Honestly though with 6-8psi that thing would be an absolute ripper in an 80's F truck. Find an 80-86 Bullnose short bed F-150, add a late 70's D44 solid axle to the front with some 6" lift springs, a 9" in the rear with add a leaves and maybe blocks for about a 4" overall lift, some 35's and that engine with 6-8 psi making around 450hp and 500+tq. You could run a C6 with 3.50 gears with little problem. Honestly it would be a relatively cheap build overall...
