The SI is a good car don't get me wrong but Honda cut a few corners on the inside that steered me away. Also the GTI with the PP pulls significantly harder.
I was cross shopping a 2014 BRZ and a 2015 Civic Si Coupe. I ended up going for the Si. They are both super slow compared to what I was used to, but the Si felt faster to me. The handling was surprisingly close between them. I mainly went for the Si because the sound system was better, it would handle better in winter, and it had better space in the rear seats. In both cases, I had the long term goal of Supercharging it, and once Supercharged, the BRZ would probably be a LOT more fun. But I wasn't willing to sacrifice passenger comfort and winter drivability. Plus, something about having the last ever VTEC Si seems special. It has the k24 engine, which is just peppy enough to be fun, and once supercharged, knowing it will maintain that rev happy, VTEC characteristic just appeals to me. I could have gotten a newer Si for pretty much the exact same price, but making a new one make more power would involve a bigger turbo, which would create lag. And that is not what a Civic should be about. Both of them are super disappointing compared to my heavily modified WRX in terms of driving dynamics and power, but I couldn't justify replacing all the shit I kept breaking on that car anymore lol

@@campkira Torque steer is a FWD issue, and the new SI and Type R have pretty much none. So cut the shit man it's lame to lie so transparently, if a GTI with 230-240whp and 260-270wtq doesn't torque steer neither does the little SI.
Love the Civic for it’s practicality and features plus it’s a blast to drive and is easier in daily commute thanks to the turbo you don’t have to downshift as often to speed up

I have a '19 Si sedan, and at 6'3" with 35" inseam I can sit behind myself. And the trunk is huge. Car is the size of a previous generation Accord, yet very sporty and light. It's definitely the way to go at this price point.
I just picked up a 10th gen Civic Si Sedan. I love it! It's great for daily. It comes fully loaded with everything. If I wanted a Sports car I would of gotten a used 370z and slapped on some bolt-ons for the price of a new (outdated) 86. The car being RWD or FWD doesn't make a difference 90% of the time you drive. Only when you push it to the limits or take it the track is where it matters. Coming from a Nissan 240SX and an Infiniti G35, the Civic Si handles corners like a champ.
The twins are prized due to the low weight compared to most barring the 2 seat Miata. The problem with the 370Z is still the weight. 500+ lbs more for a 2 seater only is unacceptable. That is nearly Ford Mustang weight, which changes the feel drastically. Not sure the comment on used, as the twins can be had cheaply used as well.
My 2019 Brz is my dream car and I bought it for 25k US back in January. Best car purchase EVER! Drives like a dream! (It’s my daily driver and traffic with the 6speed doesn’t suck that bad for what it is plus I can just romp on it once the traffic clears and glide through the gears 👍👍👍
Pretty sure the Si doesn't turn off traction completely with just one click. You need to this sequence : 1. Turn car on 2. Parking brake off 3. Press and hold brake pedal 4. Turn traction control on and off 5. Parking brake on 6. Release brake pedal 7. Turn traction control on and off 8. Press and hold brake pedal 9. Turn traction control on and off I've tried this in a 2018 model, which will make the VSA lights turn on and the "off" light blinking. Unless they've changed this in the 2019 model
I think, unless you're going to be tracking the car often, or you just REALLY want RWD, the Civic wins hands down as a daily driver, even against the BRZ in manual. Just simply 5k cheaper, more torque, better fuel economy (probably), more cargo and rear passenger space, interior amenities etc. If you really wanted a RWD sports car for 35K I would get a Miata ND at that point lol
not probably, it does have better fuel economy and the car is amazing. i own this car and trust me, all that paper jargon like fwd, understeer blah blah wont matter when u drive it, it flicks well, very responsive front end, its an amazing car, also really fast actually
The BRZ automatic gear ratios are more for fuel efficiency than performance while the manual version is more geared for performance (The reason why the manual gets worse average fuel economy than automatic)
@@TeamGun yepp 2017 WRB brz. Can you explain why the manual gets worse gas mileage than the auto then? Usually in autos energy is lost through the torque converter which means manual should and almost always has a better fuel economy
Ethan Colaco you’re talking about things how they were in the past. More gears = better fuel savings. So in the past a 4 speed auto would get worse numbers than a 5 speed manual. Today, with 6 speed autos (or more gears) the auto is always rated higher mpg than the manual, in any car. Modern day automatics just have more gears and they can shift faster than any human can, and at precisely the right time (driving in normal situations). A human can’t replicate that, and a human can’t do it consistently so mpg suffers.
Came back to this video now that I’m 18 and have money to buy a car and a used Auto 86/BRZ is as tempting as can be for a daily, once again cheers for the video lads
I've owned my FR-S for nearly 7 years and have never - EVER - had anyone in the backseats. I just don't know any circus contortionists. My Miata has more backseat room.... *crickets*
maybe you just don't know anyone. I've fit 5 people in the car before 5'5-5'8 height range and their backpacks. 4 people it's really fucking tight for everyone but in a pinch it works.
@@edward101697 I feel like people misunderstand the coined term turbocharge nowadays, because used to be for higher velocity output, now it's gas economy.
The 86 looks so much better, but the civic is probably the most fun to drive...either way, both these cars are slow AF for today’s 4banger turbo era...
I haven’t driven either one but the 86 looks so much better than the Civic. But the radio in the 86 looks like someone went to Best Buy and bought the least expensive head unit that fit, that car really needs a refresh. But to me Miata is always the answer.

What a great comparison and a great idea. For me it would be FWD manual all the way! As much as I like RWD there is just something about rowing your own gears in a car with a good manual that can't be beat and Honda makes amazing manuals AND Honda knows how to make FWD cars. To be honest, not having a manual is what I really miss from a lot of "modern" sports cars and super cars. It is no accident that I am a FK8 Honda Civic Type R owner. People just need to learn how to drive manual. IMHO I believe manuals also help save lives because when you are in a manual it forces you to focus on driving and to use both hands when you are driving. I can't tell you how many people I have seen texting or using their phones while driving automatics. You just can't do that in a manual. If Honda stops making manuals it would be a huge loss to the automotive community.
As an auto brz owner the paddle shifters offer a great experience when you want manual control and chuck it in auto while stuck in traffic. I’ve never had a more fun car to drive!
Shame I just found this video, my adopted sister just got her hands on a 2020 Civic Si, whereas I got an auto Oceanic 2019 86 GT this past Fall as my first car, in an auto, and I don't regret it one bit. It handles smooth, it turns like a dream, and the only things I've considered changing (or already changed) were the stock "nav upgrade" head unit (stupid idea to put such a slow 2005-era HU in a brand new car, jfc) for a wireless AA Pioneer unit, and a set of Tein coilovers to smooth out the road bumpiness. A great daily for an awful work commute (40-50 miles daily in DC traffic) and for shredding those curvy, hilly rural roads that I take instead of the highway. Only thing I dislike so far is that Audis and Teslas like to pick on me over my "speed" deficiency. I try to pay them no mind, though, let their asses get pulled over for trying to race me, lol. Actually considering the manual if my work commute changes, though. I understand the concept and have applied it in practice, but I didn't want to deal with that in a daily. Great car, even in an automatic, and I hope others see this.
There is no reason in my opinion to get an 86 that is auto. Si all day unless the 86 is manual then it’s 86 all day. I can’t justify having an auto 86 my friend had an auto 86 and let me drive it. It was the most boring car I have driven to date. I had more fun driving the new corolla with a manual then I did driving the auto 86. My friend then proceeded to sell his auto 86 and got a fiesta ST and he loves it so much more then the 86.
On the phone slot, I had gotten my Galaxy S3, the next day my FRS. The phone fit perfectly. The current larger phones no longer fit, so blame the phone companies for that.
@@Crlarl I understand that they wanted an "aggressive" look for the Type R, but it looks like something a kid watching old Fast and the Furious movies would think to design. It's a missed opportunity for Honda IMHO as they might have reeled in more customers (older customers) that shied/ran away due to it's mutated looks.

I've been driving a brz for the last 5 years, and sometimes I feel like it's time to go for some other car, but I just can't find the right replacement for it. It's such a good car, and it's really fun to drive. It would be a waste to spend money on something else because for sure I'd regret it !
Owned an automatic 86 for four years, added a Jackson supercharger after 30k. It was a great car, still miss it. The supercharger only added ~60hp, ~50tq, but that's all you really need in such a light car. Own a Stinger GT now because I need more cargo space, and I can honestly say I had the same amount of fun in my 86 that I do in the Stinger. BTW, you need to hold down the traction control button until TRAC OFF appears and stays on. You'll have a much easier time sidewaysing your 86. You really can't hold a drift for long with just the standard traction control off option, stability will kick in ~2-3 seconds into your drift and set you straight. Learned that the hard way on an exit ramp, straightened me right into a guard rail. I shed a manly tear for my baby, won't lie. Might look into getting the Stinger GT-S with AWD/RWD decoupling after it's been out for a year or two, really digging the Stinger. Would be nice if they made a Stinger coupe and kept the liftback, I'd be all over that. AWD is almost always quicker, but you do miss RWD, even with the Stinger's rear-bias, close but no cigar.
Eh I went from a 5 speed manual to a auto FRS and it’s a ton of fun. Sometimes I get auto, sometimes manual, just depends on what I’m looking at and how it feels. The auto FRS saved me $10k, I got it for so cheap, and it’s a blast I love this car by far my favourite car I’ve ever owned.
My 09 Civic SI was a great little car, with the factory "aero kit" and 6 speed Manual, car had clean simple lines. Not a bunch of plastic up front. Also not a fan of the taillights, I think the SI gets uglier every year.
@@Stexen As far as I can tell, the 2019 Toyota 86 with the "GT" trim as shown here is exactly the same as the 2017 "860 Special Edition" Toyota 86 EXCEPT the reverse camera pops up on the infotainment screen where it should. They had it right and then decided to mess it all up. I have the 860 edition and it's great, although I'll probably upgrade the infotainment system at some point since the one Toyota puts in all their vehicles is kind of lackluster.
did I see you guys filming in GTIs around Rattlesnake Point Conservation area a few weeks ago? I saw someone with that same camera set up cruising up a cool little corner by the park that could be the NEXT cliche corner!
Michael Vaca I have had both as well. I love my Si more too. More comfort and is a tad bit faster with a beautiful interior set up. My brz does win in exterior though everyone can agree with that
3:33 Wow that's actually a really hard choice! I think the Civic sounds really good for an I4, and the 86 sounds disappointing for a Boxer 4, but Boxer 4s inherently sound cooler sooooo they come out almost as a coin flip for me.
Love your vids. Owning a '17 SI now, and having owned rwd sports cars, surprisingly the SI is one of the most fun cars to drive. The chassis work is so tight. And yes, sport mode does sharpen the handling and steering noticeably. Since the basic chassis is so good, the SI handles really well in normal mode. That is why you didn't feel the difference right away. One huh? moment watching your review: how did the 86 sound better? Not from the video, where you couldn't even hear it. Not close. Maybe it sounds better live. Not that either car's sound is making Fiat Abarth owners jealous. If they can hear their exhaust over the screaming plunge of their resale values. The 86/BRZ just seems like someone said 'hey, let's build a 280 ZX again.' Which is fine. I enjoyed that car too. And it had less lag from its six cylinder NA engine than the Toybaru twins. If a sports car is ever better with an automatic, then you are looking at a design fail. Great athletes are called 'clutch' players for a reason. Mic drop.
Great video guys. I think its fairly evident that the Toyota 86 is meant to be in manual. Not that its bad in automatic, but the manual is better. This comparison is fair, but I think there are some better comparisons. In my opinion, I think an interesting comparison would be the manual Toyota 86 TRD edition vs the Honda Civic SI HFP. Although, we're still comparing apples to oranges with a rwd vs fwd car. I think the Toyota 86 TRD vs the new Mazda Miata would be a good comparison as well. RWD coupe vs RWD coupe. The Toyotas interior seems refreshingly retro to me at this point. Missing some of the gadgets we now expect in 2019 cars, but thats ok with me.
I think I need to move to Canada. I love the fact that there are so few cars on the road. Where I live in south Florida, any time of day or night we have way too many cars on the road. I'll keep the Florida weather though. . .

@@mikenormandy9250 Only Si's even if you could afford the R or a GTI? There is a reason I bought the MK7 over the SI, and the Type R is a solid pick if you have to have a Civic. The SI is a good car don't get me wrong but Honda cut a few corners on the inside that steered me away. Also the GTI with the PP pulls significantly harder.
“Bro we’ve got the HDMI cable” 😂
Your timing is impeccable as I was comparing these exact cars yesterday! Thanks boys!
Whisky, Weed and whips Watson you just need a KTuner with the bigger turbo and it cuts out the lag. I plan on doing that with my 2019 si
@@boardin11 Mine is 2015, pre-turbo model. That's why I'm supecharging it, not turbo. Keep that VTEC characteristic. It's the last ever true VTEC Si, may as well not ruin that with a turbo

That says alot coming from you because g35 and g37 have excellent handling

I just got the Civic Si a week ago and am really enjoying it. It is really forgiving to people new at driving manual as well.
I love that yall consider more than just stats and that you give multiple perspectives on each car.
Pretty sure the Si doesn't turn off traction completely with just one click. You need to this sequence :
1. Turn car on
2. Parking brake off
3. Press and hold brake pedal
4. Turn traction control on and off
5. Parking brake on
6. Release brake pedal
7. Turn traction control on and off
8. Press and hold brake pedal
9. Turn traction control on and off
I've tried this in a 2018 model, which will make the VSA lights turn on and the "off" light blinking. Unless they've changed this in the 2019 model
CZ Studio that’s only if you want to fully turn it off I don’t think much people do that
That’s ridiculously complicated.
Ethan Colaco wrong, do you even own a brz,86,frs? Doubt it
@@TeamGun yepp 2017 WRB brz.
Cars nowadays always get better mpg with auto. There is no logical reason to get stick but it’s all I drive.
The manuals are actually faster than the automatics, its all in the gear ratios
No matter the drivetrain, manual will be my choice

@@TheStraightPipes alright guys, first of great commentary throughout the video. Great video overall. I still standby what I said.
Some cars in an automatic, especially with ZF or dct transmissions are great, but some cars just need to have a manual transmission. Like the 86 lol.
Horsepower and drive train really do affect whether or not a manual or an auto is the better option. Let's be honest though, a 200 hp manual car is super fun, just like a fast manual v8. I'm sure if the Lexus ISF came with a manual trans, you would have got it Jakub.
At this point, the only legit reason I see people using when it comes to manual or not, is heavy city traffic, like if you live in LA, or NY. Other than that, if it comes with a manual transmission, you'll have more fun for sure in the manual.

Daaayyyum the 86's bright aqua blue looks so freaking good. If I could get that blue on the Si I'd be completely sold.
While I like the blue on the 86 I feel that's a color for a Porsche 911, like that classic bubble gum blue, the Electric Blue on the Si seems like just any ordinary blue but when you come out of the car wash with a fresh coat of wax on it and the sun hits it at just the right angle it never fails to put a smile on your face.
The 86 had no chance. They didnt drive them hard so the wheels dont make enough of a difference. This is a really poor comparison

Hopefully I get an auto gt86 for university. For commuting with fun.

I'll keep the Florida weather though. . .
We close down the roads
I've been driving a 2013 BRZ 6-speed manual since new. Still love it.
Tell us about those overhead drone shots. Pretty fancy flying!
