I love the grunt of the z - put on an exhaust - an intake + tune and you have another 50hp. These motors are well built and can take a decent turbo as well.

Had my 370z for 6 years and I love it. Don't care about the infotainment, it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Granted, I don't daily it. It's an analog car like so few cars are these days. With basic mods and tuning, it's the most engaging car I've owned. But holy cow, Nissan, time for an update. This "new" model is no different from mine - it's been a decade. Let's put the VR30DDTT in at least.
An f86 WILL NOT out handle a 370z let alone a NISMO. It might feel like it but that's because it's hard to feel like you're sliding in a car that is too weak to actually slide or break loose. The 86 is what you get your 18 year old as their first sports car so they don't kill themselves.
I own the TRD 86 and I LOVE IT. It takes me back too when I owned a 1986 2 door Corolla GT-S. While it isn't fast me living in Puerto Rico this car is a grip monster in the curves. Love the car period.
The GT86 with a supercharger, oil cooler and intercooler is perfect. Got 290hp out of mine with stable temps all the time, the supercharger also eliminates the torque dip very well. Got the car used for 18k, then spend around 8k for the upgrades. Awesome car.
Nice! Which supercharger kit did you go with? I have a BRZ and went with the SBD turbo kit 3 years ago. I don’t think I could enjoy this car without FI.

Violated Gerber Baby I’m 13 years old and i own a 2007 toyota yaris 5 speed that was given to me and it’s way more fun to drive than any automatic vehicle i’ve driven.
I knew the 86 had a torque dip before I bought mine. I actually didn't mind that it had a flaw like that. It is an opportunity to tune your 86 the way you want to do it. The philosophy from the ae86 is maintained. It's almost like the 86 platform leaves the door open for tuning because it's incredibly easy to do. However if you're looking to maintain reliability, DO NOT push the boxer engine over 300 horsepower. Once you go over 300 horsepower you're going to be walking a thin line between speed and detonation. Without any tune you can shift around the torque dip as long as you're staying under 3,000RPM until you hit 5th gear. If you keep it in 1st gear like a dummy, you will be at the mercy of the torque dip because you're over 3,000RPM's before 5th gear. This is a tip for people that drive the vehicle stock. The 86 reacts to weight and tires like I've never seen before in other cars I've driven. Because it's so light, even an axle-back muffler delete will give you a ton speed solely on the stock muffler weighing SO MUCH. You don't have to go cat-back exhaust, save your money. If you're looking for ways to tune the 86 I would recommend starting with solely a Stage 1 ECU open-flash tune. All that tune does is increase the amount of fuel being injected and requires your car to take premium every time. Try and upgrade the OEM battery to a Shorai battery, along with replacing the OEM fuses with higher quality aftermarket fuses. That increases the throttle response of the car and reduces the torque dip quite a bit. If you are willing to take it even further, the next step is changing the final gear ratio to 4.8. Do not change the gear ratio by yourself. Take it to a shop and pay the labor fees. Trust me on this one. From there, if you're somehow still not satisfied you can install Unequal Length Headers and a bigger air intake along with an aftermarket aluminum radiator to take care of the overheating problem. It will require a Stage 2 tune. However, this will eliminate the torque dip completely. The only sacrifice at this point is fuel efficiency because the boxer engine is NA. Weight reduction will reduce the fuel efficiency problem. I find that tuning the car this way to start is the best thing to do. It's not worth going the supercharger or turbo route because you're playing with reliability at that point with the boxer engine. Not to mention the price of a supercharger or turbo kit + all of the supporting mods. Save the headache. Save your wallet. If you're planning on going crazy with horsepower (300+) you might as well engine swap. The nice thing is that the OEM chassis can fit a 2JZ or any RB-Series engine no problem. If you are planning on going the engine swap route, please please please try and mount the engine as low as you can in the engine bay, even if it requires custom engine mounts and some welding. It will help with cornering drastically. This whole process is actually really fun to do because the OEM engine bay is very easy to work with. Everything is in an easy to locate spot for the most part. Happy Tuning! 🔧

The design of the 86 is just so much nicer with that aggressive front end. I just can't get myself to like the looks of the 370, that rounded body style and the headlights just don't do it for me.
As so many other people have said, so many other places: People speak of how dated the 370Z is (mostly people who don’t drive one or care for tech DESIGNED for eventual obsolescence) and yet, every time you see someone DRIVE one it’s all smiles.
Z is overall alright, but just right for what it is. 86 handles like a dream, if you ever get it up to speed.... Nismo package is kinda worth tidying up slop Nissan left, but TRD is frivolous as hell just making an already kind-of-overpriced little guy even worse of a value. And in the used market, well, Nissans are a PAIN to do anything with in the engine bay, but Subs are much easier.
Great production and I agree with most of what you guys mention in this video (especially the torque dip issue that the Toyobaru 86/BRZs have rather than its 'lack of power') BUT, unless you're talking about a used 370z vs a new Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, i'm just not sre if its right to pitch the two together as their specs are incomparable. The 370z is more of a rival to the A90 2020 Toyota Supra and the 86/BRZ are more of a rival to the Mazda MX-5 with its power+weight figures. Nevertheless, good job. And unfortunately, its only in Japan where we can have the Toyota 86 GR, Toyota 86 14R-60 and Toyota 86 GRMN that all feature much better brakes and some feature much better aero and slight power upgrades.
I doubt I agree that its necessary for the 86 to have a 6 cyl as it is suppose to be a successor to the Toyota AE86 which has a 4 cyl that were designed to be driven at 10/10ths around the narrow tight & twisty touge roads in Japan unlike the wide straight roads you get in N.America... Keiichi Tsuchiya (aka THE Drift King) proved the internet that you can have so much fun on the touge in a modest powered AE86 and the 'new' 86 whilst not spending too much on consumable costs. Tetsuya Tada san (engineer of both the Supra + 86) hinted that they might release the manual version of the Supra soon, once demand of the early batch cars start fading away.
I think they just randomly put this together without doing any real history research on the 2. The 86 was never meant to be compared to the 370. Because originally the 86 is technically a corolla. Or at least the original from 86’.
Agree the NISMO wasn't best comparison but least they got TRD to try lol. Best get the base model for $28k plus ttl same price 86 discounts are awesome on 370z

Just so you know that Toyota's DNA injected all over it helped it reach the 200 horsepower output. Without Toyota's D4S DNA, it would've been more anemic.
I have a 2017 Toyota 86 860 special edition and I know from experience that it will do 100mph in 5th gear and over 140 in 6th with 2k rpm left before redline
At the time of the video the Z was only three years old and ya'll are talking about it like it's from the 90's 🤣 But man, that paint on the Z. Don't know if it was just something the camera was doing or not but if it looks like that in person then holy balls that's hot AF.
So much complaints about the 370z, but enthusiasts will be begging for a car like that in the near future. It’s as raw as a driving experience you can buy and really is a driver’s car. It’s manual, RWD, has a beefy NA V6 engine, handles very well in stock form, and in my honest opinion is still a good looking car. What more could you ask for from something that does what it was meant to do, which is to be driven.
The Z’s may be outdated but it’s still a beautiful car. They have a huge fan base due to the uniqueness and I feel if they change to much they will lose those fans. As the saying goes “why replace what isn’t broke” the endless mods available for these cars will make them legendary for years to come!
Still own a 370Z and it’s still fun and pretty quick, a huge upgrade was the Michelin pilot super sport tires - taking off down some old country roads still brings me joy

True points. Japan has its engine displacement tax so I guess Toyota wanted to keep the 86 'atteinable' for more people. If they did have a 6cyl option available exclusively for the N.American market where they have straight roads, the Japanese domestic fans will be pissed at Toyota I reckon.
Well there are rumors now that the 86/BRZ may get Subaru's 2.4L, either NA (~220hp) or turbo'd (~260hp). While I personally love my G35's V6 power, I think the 2.4L just makes sense (also harkens back to the 240sx). It would have better every day power in the low-mid rev range while giving much better fuel economy. Likely it would also be lighter and fit better without having to lengthen the car.
(Owning and driving a 86 as a daily current) you shouldn’t even put one in a comparison the 86 is Prius with a capable chassis. The z is a accurate sports car. The gt86 is rear wheel drive 90’s Celica sold in 2020 🤷🏼♂️ honestly
i'm not even an 86 fan at all, but I agree with you 100%. These are apples and oranges, a car more designed for autocrossing in the 86 (handling over horsepower) versus a pure-bred track car in the 370z (all around power and handling combined).

Was your FRS paid off? Thinking about doing the same thing but im still doing payments on my FRS wanted to know if it's still possible to do a trade in.
2 years later, now that the new Z is here, I think the 370z is going to remain a classic forever. There’s just something so timeless about the design and it’s so freaking cool. I’m looking at cars right now and I’m torn between getting a brz and a 370z. I’m a big Nissan fan and I’ve always wanted a Z so I’m leaning towards it, but the brz is a fresher design and more affordable and has a nicer interior… going to be tough to decide
They’ll ruin it. Turbo 4 most likely. The current Z is exactly what it’s supposed to be. Low-tech, naturally aspirated 6 cylinder, mildly-quick sports car, that handles well and looks good, for a reasonable price. I own one. It has its shortcomings, mostly in tech and luxury, but only if you ignore price. Brand new base models for $30k all day long. It’ll be one of the last “purist” sports cars. Going to try my damndest to never get rid of it. I think it’ll become a novelty.
I believe it's because if they go turbo with the new Z it'll be a 4 cylinder (with little HP improvement over the 6 cylinder NA. It's main focus is mostly to meet MPG regulations). I think it'll be a different story if the next Z is a 6 cylinder turbo or even a V8 NA like the E92 M3. I doubt many people would complain.
Kevin Lau I doubt it’ll just be a 4 cylinder because Nissan already has VR30DDTT, and they’ll probably gonna use it. I think people are just getting sick of turbocharging everything. It’s no longer special, and we know the cons about turbo as much as we know pros now, like sounds, response, etc. Z34 is old, but old enough to be something unique and special, and people want to be that way probably.
I still think those Z's look good. I would rock that... But I'd rather buy a used one since there are so many out there.

I mean a sports car like 370Z or GT86 and while they are meant to be fast they are meant to be DRIVEN hence why a true sports car has a manual transmission
I don’t mean a base model with a manual transmission
Not really. Worse acceleration, less focus on steering, and more prone to human-error...
Yousef Al-A'ssaf يوسف العسّاف yeah but that’s not what the manual is for
When you are talking about a sports car, it’s meant to be DRIVEN and the manual transmission gives the best driving experience
Yes autos have gotten so much better since the past decade as they became faster and smoother but sports cars are not about speed it’s about the fun to drive experience
@@basithph8958
For me, it's much more fun to drive the car fast. Not just in a straight line, but having fun and playing around with the steering wheel. I only find that happening when I have both of my hands on the steering wheel. I could never trust myself in doing the same moves/tricks with only one hand.
I know that shifting the car at high rpm's and the way it throws you inward and outward is fun, but to me, it's not as fun as jockeying around with the car.
But that's just me.
The 370Z has to be one of the most under-rated sports cars out there.

After getting a Tune to remove the torque dip it’s definitely the FIRST modification every 86 owner should consider doing day 1 of owning one.
The introduction was just amazing.. then when James starts talking about the 86 I lost my nuggets 😂😂😂😂
An f86 WILL NOT out handle a 370z let alone a NISMO.
It might feel like it but that's because it's hard to feel like you're sliding in a car that is too weak to actually slide or break loose.
The 86 is what you get your 18 year old as their first sports car so they don't kill themselves.

The GT86 with a supercharger, oil cooler and intercooler is perfect. Got 290hp out of mine with stable temps all the time, the supercharger also eliminates the torque dip very well.
Got the car used for 18k, then spend around 8k for the upgrades. Awesome car.

I have a BRZ with header and tune. I absolutely love it! Great car. Super reliable. Averages 29mpg basically all the time. Highly recommend!
How much power does ur BRZ make with just the header and tune?
Always a great morning when I wake up to a Throttle House video! Thank you!
I have an STI, and as soon as I test drove the Nismo I fell in love. I was hooked !

Bought a 86 over a Z, miata and Wrx. It’s just so much more fun and the extra two seats are perfect for cargo. I take it out and fold rear seats down, get in my sleeping bag under the night sky. Wish it had a moonroof.
The design of the 86 is just so much nicer with that aggressive front end. I just can't get myself to like the looks of the 370, that rounded body style and the headlights just don't do it for me.
I chose a new BRZ over a 370Z, no regrets.
As so many other people have said, so many other places:
People speak of how dated the 370Z is (mostly people who don’t drive one or care for tech DESIGNED for eventual obsolescence) and yet, every time you see someone DRIVE one it’s all smiles.

After all, if you want a 6cyl RWD Coupe Toyota, thats what the Supra is for is it not? Tetsuya Tada san (engineer of both the Supra + 86) hinted that they might release the manual version of the Supra soon, once demand of the early batch cars start fading away.
What I love about the Z is that despite being a modern car, it's at heart an old classic

I think they just randomly put this together without doing any real history research on the 2. The 86 was never meant to be compared to the 370. Because originally the 86 is technically a corolla. Or at least the original from 86’.
Agree the NISMO wasn't best comparison but least they got TRD to try lol. Best get the base model for $28k plus ttl same price 86 discounts are awesome on 370z
because they are very comparable, basically same class - old school, simple rwd sport coupe and have very similar target
People say 370z look dated only cos not much has changed in the way it looks over the years but compared to new cars of today it still looks better! It looks better than the 86 and the new supra!
Wish the 86/BRZ had an 8500k redline at least since it doesn’t have a ton of power; Subaru could have given the motor more beans in that regard.
As a owner of a GT86, I'm agree with you.
Balanced engines seem to be harder, aka more expensive to make; but a b&b'd, all motor fa20/fa22 stroker engine would be nice.

'The BRZ and the 86 need a 6 cylinder' - Amen, and I am saying this as a BRZ owner.
“It’s the sound of me going to jail” lmao
The Z’s may be outdated but it’s still a beautiful car. They have a huge fan base due to the uniqueness and I feel if they change to much they will lose those fans. As the saying goes “why replace what isn’t broke”

If updating the 370Z to use CVT, then no. Keep it the same.
They would never do that. If the GT-R has a dual-clutch, they definitely wouldn't dare put one in here. The 370 also shares a lot of its characteristics with the G37, so expect Infiniti to influence the next Z (so hopefully a minimum 400hp, like the Red Sport, and a 7 speed, maybe a dual-clutch)

Still my dream to own a Nissan Z. I learned to drive stick on a 1988 turbo and ever since then I’ve wanted one
The 370Z is a good car but we have been dying for a new Z car
What a 390z?
No.. a new 300z(x)
When 350Z came out people bashed it for dropping turbos,
nearly 20 years later people wants it to be naturally aspirated. Very interesting
The peddle dance killed me. Im dead. "I want everything off"
