Hey friends! I'm about halfway through the game now and appreciate all of your comments! I will definitely try my best to really let myself be immersed and will watch the "making of" this game after I complete my playthrough too!
I am somebody who's lived with psychosis and hallucinations both auditory and visual my whole life. Without spoilers I wanna explain the concept of the game so you can easily get into the correct headspace. Every person I've watched play this game overlooks some of the conflicts at just surface level. the game isn't meant to be taken in for what you see. It's made so that you adopt the thought processes of people with the mental illness. So exactly how Druth gives Senua information about the gods to help her on her journey, I am gonna explain the mental health elements to help on yours. Even though the game seems very fantasy and fictional and like God of War, the developers never strayed from anything grounded in realism that many people like me have seen and been through and I'll explain how. At the beginning of the game when she gets to Hel, Dillions head starts to breathe in the sack. which goes to show that upon reaching the territory of resurrection, Dillion taking breaths represents him living on in Senua's mind. he lives vicariously through her. The head isn't actually breathing its her perceiving it that way as motivation to uphold his memory. The rot that grows on Senua's arm is actually a real life thing people experience. I've had hallucinations before of parts of my body withering away or dying, and usually these form based off of lack of a sense of worth and self preservation. Senua feels hopeless and worthless so it's her mind conveying her desire to dissipate into nothing. That's why each time you "die" or "fail" in the game the rot grows stronger. Not because Hela is smiting her, but because she's feeling stuck in an endless cycle of mental incompetence. She feels trapped in a cycle of defeat and needs a change in perspective to be victorious. Most of the doors with runes in the game aren't actually locked. From my experience I've had times where before proceeding with something within my own life I've had to solve a problem by referencing symbols or ideas from my past to justify moving forward in a certain state of mind. There's also been times when i've either been dreaming or had a hallucination that changed my surroundings, where I had to speak to certain people or find "ways out" through items in the dreams to wake up and snap out of it. There isn't actually runes locking the path to Helheim. Senua just simply must get into specific states of mind to justify upholding the mission, and it could sprout from anxiety, fear, hatred, or fond memories, but those runes may have meanings that helps her justify proceeding that she connects the dots with. The easiest most common minded explanation is something like angel numbers. Yeah they may just seem like numbers, but to certain people they feel like the universe is speaking directly to them as if in code. (and honestly i recommend looking the runes up occasionally because it tells you how she feels about certain scenarios or what may come like fortunes) In line with some of the previous breakdown I've also had times where character i have hallucinated represented repressed parts of myself. For example I have this one spirit I see occasionally that speaks in introspective monologues of my own perception of myself. much like the narration voices and the other ones that are more occasional. Whenever i can't put who i am into words he can.. which gives me solid ground and a sense of solidarity of who I am. she has similar experiences. One of the most important steps to overcoming grief is to accept what hurts you the most about it. I won't say how and give spoilers, but every character you meet in the game is actually a representation of each aspect of Senua's personality and what she needs to overcome. In therapy they teach you about things called "delusions" and "obstruction Principles" which basically is when the mind gets too overwhelmed with emotion, trauma, and information, your brain fabricates ideas, people, and settings that better help you make sense of hard thinking patterns. and for her a lot of the time it's self destructive tendencies, a doomed mentality, feeling like an outcast and a lot more. So be on the lookout!! Also finally people who experience psychosis have tendencies to form amnesia based off of PTSD or other bits of info that can be too much to comprehend, and a lot of the puzzles in this game take place within those moments. Typically when I've encountered them my environments "Fade to black" or seems very void-like. In situations like this the only way i've ever been able to solve them is to rely on a feeling or symbolism to guide me instead of reality and what i see itself. So when these portions come up don't resort to logic, think in terms of how the mind works. 🤟 Its definitely a lot to take in. The story is outstanding so i'm excited to see you play more. I hope you see this and use it to understand the plot better than most people. On your videos later on i'll explain story points that happened already or new concepts that might enhance the game for you!!
Really one of the more unique games I've ever played, and I also love the representation of certain aspects of mental illness in the story. I hope you have fun experiencing this game 😊
This game is WILD! Interesting how there’s no tutorial save for the “voices” in Senua’s head. Interesting take on psychosis in a character and the fourth wall breaking. Great stuff
A note on Runes: the rune that looks like a capital M is actually a runic E. I won't translate it all, but that part of the ring said 'Seek Hela's truth'. The devs did a fairly good job with the runes, but they did make at least one silly error - 'truth' should not be spelled with a TH at the end. The TH sound requires only one rune, called Thorn, which looks like this… Þ
I just discovered your channel and was overjoyed to see you playing Hellblade. If you like narrative-driven games you'll love this one, and from what I've seen in this episode you're really good at both the combat and problem-solving. I'm actually a little jealous about that. The one gamer skill I've never been able to attain, and I've been gaming on computers since way back when the operating system was called DOS, rather than Windows, is 3rd person combat. Gets me killed almost every time I try it. Just a word of warning, though. Don't talk over the narrator. You did that at least once. Listening to her will give you important insights into Senua's backstory. It might be difficult, sometimes, to hear the difference between her and the other voices, but the latter always appear in text at the top of the screen. The narrator's text will be at the bottom, and she'll be a little louder. Also, don't completely tune out the other voices, either. What they say during combat can warn you of danger you'd miss, otherwise. If one of them says something is behind you, well, something's behind you. You'll probably want to do something about that ... Now I'm off to binge on your Skyrim playthrough. I can't play Hellblade, myself, because I'm on an old PC that Steam no longer supports, but I've had a playthrough going on Skyrim since the first month it came out. Well, not the same playthrough, of course. I almost never play past about level 55 or 60. It's probably my favorite game and I'm anxious to see how you approached it.

The gameplay is accurate to the mental illness. It's not set in a fictional world lol. Magic doesn't exist so all they could really do was grounded swordplay. the rest is puzzles because that's what people like me face daily lol. It does seem lazy at first but it makes sense
@@Orokovet Additionally, back when they made this game they were very much an indie Dev group. And so they decided to prioritize the graphics and make it look really REALLY pretty and so they didn't have the budget to fit in a super complex combat system... It's one of the things some people are kind of hoping the second game will have because they have a significantly significantly larger budget! I don't think people are asking for a super duper complex combat system like the God of War games or something... but just something a little bit more complex than is in the first game.
Story driven games often limit you to a single trail like a shooter, not a big fan of those. The action moments are too far apart but yet seem repetitive, and just too much bla bla. I don't see much replay value either. The game is supposed to be immersive like no others but it doesn't work with everybody, just like hypnotism. I like freedom in my games or at the least the illusion of it so I'm an RPG guy. When you're afraid of the dark the monsters are in your head, given birth by your imagination. When you can't see, every sounds become suspect.
I tried to get into this game, I didn't like the combat style. I may try it again, but the movement overall is just very strange. Almost feels like it's on rails, even though it's not.
This game is designed to be extremely immersive (camera angle, no HUD, headphones). I can see your immersion break constantly when the subtitles appear. You’ll enjoy the game more without them.
