Guys if you enjoyed this you really owe it to yourselves to try the original graphic novel-it has sub plots that add up to so much more in total, gives the main narrative even more depth and punch and power and resonance with today. It is an *astonishing* piece of work.
You guys have become my top tier movie reactors, when I see you have a new reaction uploaded, I know it’s gonna be great! If I may, I would like to recommend the following if you haven’t seen them: The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise and Kent Watanabe. Brewster’s Millions (1985 edition) With Richard Pryor and John Candy. Flood (2007) With Robert Carlyle and David Suchet. (British Based Film, yet strangely enough, filmed in Cape Town South Africa!) Inside Man With Denzel Washington and Clive Owen. There’s a fair bit of diversity with these choices, so at least they don’t fall under the same genre. If you have seen/get to see them, I hope you enjoy(ed)!
sadly he wasn't the initial actor, so some of the footage was not of him, and that took it away apperently even if 99% of it was him and only 1% of V in the movie was another actor. It is really sad as he was so damn good in this movie.
Also, John Hurt, though he was in V for short periods of time, i like the parallel with this role as the tyrant, then in 1984, he was the victim in a tyrannical system.
Hugo Weaving accepted this role...knowing his face would never be seen. All he had was his mask, his voice and his body....What a fabulous job!! Truly Oscar worthy
I believe it's usually the studio that has the most issue with hiding actors' faces. They're spending so much money on famous actors that they want their face visible as much as possible. Real actors have no problem with hiding themselves
"Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof." That has to be one of the best lines of all time. Great movie.
Always loved that too. Even got the "ideas are bulletproof" part tattoo'd years ago along my forearm along with V's mask. Even years later it still sends a chill to hear it in this movie again.
To be fair, kind of helps if the people are unified. As stands one side only riots if their guys lose. A two party system as deeply entrenched as ours (US’s) is has been really making that hurt. I know that I only vote one way regardless of quality of candidate because I’ve seen that that’s how the other side works and they implement horrifying changes. Edit: I’ll answer what party I vote for but I mean to aim at everybody, and where it matters I’m pretty sure I lightly implied at least,
@@KainErrowwith how things are looking, it won't be two party for long either. They've got everything right now, and they're looking to keep taking. This country is starting to look beat for beat like V for Vendetta. Hell, V's monologue to the people at the broadcast station AND Rookwood's monologue to the inspector, literally describes what's happening right now.
This has been going on for many years, since Blair and through the Tory Gov's. They are not working for us but against us and for globalist special interests. The Western nations were marked for destruction to make way for Global governance run by the elite. The right/left paradigm is irrelevant, tyranny will use all ideologies to maintain power and we see that today.
@@wiegandweitz9763 - Nah... normal people wanted something else... Much more than following, unless you are from US: 1. Medical? All "free". Cancer treatment, full body scan, MRI, blood tests, or anything else from broken limbs, calling ambulance or simply getting a basic medital checkup... "free" (yeah, I know I pay for it too in taxes, but it is like 1-2% of my monthly paycheck). I love it, as I don't have to worry about any medical bills. At all. Nothing to pay. I only pay for a local parking in front of some hospitals. Anything else? I don't care. And I pay that 1-2% tax gladly. 2. Medical insurance? You can go private if you want, but you don't have to since medical is "free". But in some cases, you can go for more. Such as additional medical insurance for ... everything. Currently I'm paying probably 50 pounds/euros for it, or simply about 80 pounds/euros per month for a couple (private one, on top of usual public "free" one). Not that I have to... since normal medical is "free", but in some cases you may want to take care of everything "faster", like getting results of your full body scan in one day, and also talk to doctors on the same day (not even a day, 30-60 min max and you will see your full body scan on the large monitors with doctor explaining evrything to you). 3. Maternity leave, including post pregnancy medical issues. Full pay from the employeer, if you need to take the time off. 6 months, full pay, and you can extend it for another 6 under specific circumstances. Man or woman. It doesn't matter. As a man you can stay for 6 months at home and your wife/partner can go back to work. Or other way around. All up to "you". Full pay too. No questions asked, as this is a normal approach. 4. Sick leave, unexpected? Full pay, even if this is 2-3 weeks off. After that your employer may ask you for a proof of medical condition (but then again, it is up to employer or even your boss). Usually, no questions asked if this is 1-2 weeks completely off, some kind of flu and so on. Full pay during that time of course. There is more of couse. But at the end... anything related to medical issues, any of them - won't bankrupt me, in fact I won't even feel it financialy. And me and my family can sleep better knowing it. And that is... normal, and also should be normal in US.
Hi guys I absolutely adore your reactions they are so informed and intelligent and this film is one of the very best to react to the acting is sublime and Hugo Weaving as V is inspired he has such presence even though he's wearing a mask just fabulous xx
A masterpiece. Love this movie. Very important lessons that everyone should learn and remember. Thank you for releasing this today. Happy Guy Fawks Day/Bonfire Night!
The event happened in uk. Guy fawks almost pulled it off. Got the barrels under parliament and got caught lighting em up. Barrels were ready for weeks but parliament was extended otherwise....BOOM!
In Evie's rebirth scene you can see the difference between her and V he was reborn in fire and rage while she was reborn in water and joy. That's why he left the decision up to her in the end he knew he was a monster driven by his darker emotions and was no longer certain he was doing the right thing. So he passed the torch to someone he knew was truly good. When the Domino's fell one was left standing the one he didn't control and couldn't predict it represents Evie.
neh .. it represent pure free will ... dominos falling stand for actions have consequences, and people that follow... like V said ... people are just flesh and blood ... but an idea can withstand anything, even when everything arround it falls like dominos
I thought the domino left standing was supposed to represent V... with him removing the one left standing (by proxy, removing himself), everything fell into place: parliament blowing up, and a new government being formed. Had he survived, he would've been in the way of new government forming (perhaps the people would've chose him), and that was not something that he would have wanted.
One of my favorite films. Full stop. Period. I literally watch this film every November 5th. I think that any freedom loving person should be shown this and then talk about its message. It really shows how fear can let others take our freedom for their own power. It is also a masterpiece of cinematography and score combining for some of the most moving moments. So glad you got a chance to watch this and kudos for putting it out on the 5th of November.
A lot of people today probably won't admit how many worrying parallels this movie has to the real world. The dialogue in this one is great, it's always been one of my favorites.Oh, the mask is actually called a Guy Fawkes masks. yes it is meant to resemble him.
It is so important that we look at art like this, with something to say just like we look at history. History should never be forgotten, books should not be burnt. It’s easy to look away but deep down we all should know right from wrong.
Yep, there’s always the supporters of the theocratic anti-gay anti-immigrants party who claim the theocratic anti-gay anti-immigrants party of the movie represents the other party.
Nobody has mentioned this as it seems, so I'm gonna do that: John Hurt playing the High Chancellor as an enlarged Zoom screen appearance is actually an homage to one of his most prominent roles: the protagonist in "1984" where he is going up against Big Brother. In this movie here he IS Big Brother.
I did not know this. I've read the book but never seen the film. (God that book was depressing). Definitely something deliberate in a film of this quality. And he plays the chancellor so well.
One of my top 10 films of all time. Hugo Weaving coming in at the last minute to play 'V' was epic. The Evie reborn scenes, score and cinematography give me chills and really stir my emotions every time. Thanks for sharing.
The book is way more intense, but the movie understood the message. Many people back then thought it is a super hero movie because it's DC... but this movie is way more then that and what it does to the audience, is way darker then Dark Knight which is also a serious movie. But V For Vendetta ...this is a possible future for western society. Seriously.
We went in expecting a dark gritty superhero film and left with much more than that. This is what art is, pushing boundaries and asking the tough questions.
Hugo Weaving’s(agent smith) voice acting in this movie is absolutely top notch. To be able to give a character in a mask so much personality and charisma with just voice and body language is insane!!! The entire cast did such and incredible job in this film. But Portman’s and Weaving’s performances were near perfect for this movie
@@Sparkle_Ninja my whole family when they learned who Vs actor was were like "YO THATS THE DAD FROM HACKSAW!" and i remember just busting out laughing but i also felt bad because both those characters had a rough go at life
If you want another dystopian movie to watch, The Children of Men is a great one. It's based on the novel by P.D. James, and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
I freaking love the "Governments should be afraid of their people" ever since I saw this movie back in 2005. It's such a powerful thought provoking line.
Nice timing :) today is Nov 5 🙌🏻. One of my all time favourites! Hugo Weaving delivering so much emotion and gravitas while covered from head to toe. His voice just transcends boundaries.
The building he blows up at the start, to the 1812 Overture, is The Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. It's commonly used as a symbol, in the UK, for the judicial system as a whole.
You probably get this a lot, but I'm just going to say that I think that you two are among THE most intelligent movie commentators on Facebook. LOVE your stuff. Ever since it was released, I watch this every Nov 5th.
Holy cow. 2 youtubers (Mary Cherry, Reel rejects) including you guys. Starting to react to V for Vendetta on Nov 5th. Its crazy its on the election day. What a day
Hi guys. I just have to let you know before I even start this video. I recently started watching your content, never followed reaction content before. I must say, I didnt expect it to feel like hanging out with friend, and what good friends to have. I am very sick right now and spend almost all time in bed away from everyone. You two are like shining bright lights in the dark for me, I know that sounds so over the top but it´s true. I was mid apathy and coming in to another panic attack and then I saw you guys. You both look radiant as usual. Thank you so much for keeping me such good company, and thank you for watching this particular movie, it´s one of my comfort movies. Much love from Therese in Sweden.
Hello! We want you to know it goes both ways. Words cannot express how much you guys mean to us and how privileged we are to have the opportunity to interact with all of you. More importantly it fills us with purpose to learn that we get to make your day a little bit better. You’ll always have a space here to hang out with friends and share your thoughts. We send you a massive hug and wish you a speedy recovery ❤️
@@OfficialMediaKnights I hope you have a great day, and I hope you guys have a safe 5th of November today. I am really glad you like the movie so much. It may not be perfect, and it's a bit different from the comic but the message is still as relevant and always will be. It's great to see other people so openly share their emotions and thoughts, it makes the world a more beautiful place. ❤️ Thank you for the well wishes.
And today is bonfire/guy fawkes/firework night here in Britain... _"Remember, Remember, the 5th of November, the Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason Why gunpowder treason, Should ever be forgot"_ An actual rhyme here in the UK btw.
As a Brit growing up celebrating Novemeber the 5th every year, I was always fascinated by Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot to blow up Parliament in 1605. I gravitated to the graphic novel of V for Vendetta solely due to the Guy Fawkes mask. I love this movie, love all the references to the original plot to destroy parliament. But it's scary how closely a lot of the dystopia portrayed in this movie relates to what is going on in the world today.
UK is pretty much in a vaguely similar situation right now. People getting arrested for thought crimes against the government, etc. No Freedom of Speech.
November 5th, a rebellion plot for the British and just so happens to be the Presidential Election for Americans this year and probably one of the most divisive elections in years! This film is so much more relevant today than most probably realize. It's such an underrated gem of a film that got overlooked!
A film about how an authoritarian regime was created by the fear that arose from a horrible infectious disease. A film released 15 years before Covid. But a corrupt regime that grows from the blending of church and state, making the questioning of governmental power heretical. This is so fitting for Election Day in the US.
Yet more people proved we are more unitied this election than ever? The mainstream media would have us believe the loud minority is bigger than it is and by their rhetoric that those that disagree with you hate you. It was a huge shift in every county in the nation. Most of the country REJECTED the lies of the media and became MORE red this year even if notoriously blue. We rejected the denial of biological reality, the gaslighting that the current administration was competent & used our tax dollars efficiently and for our betterment, the lie that we do not need a strong secure border. We voted for the defense of free speech, for no government manipulation of social media & mainstream news, for maintaining our borders which define our nation, for not mandating healthy individuals to take a substance that they knowingly HID was harmful, for what is probably the most politically diverse unity coalition in our history. Its given us so much hope that an undeniable number of our fellow citizens said no, we DO agree more than we disagree, that the government should have LESS control over our lives and leave US alone to grow without their influence!
Wrong, it was an attempt by catholics to push the protestants for the abuses of the king. They wanted to load gunpowder into the basement of the house of Parliament and blow up the King (who they saw to blame for the persecution).
Okay, I just have to say it: at 44:30 when Evie is watching the news talking about V and Saint Mary's, they don't actually say he did it. They say they found information linking him to the viral outbreak. That's technically true. It's how it's worded that leads you to think that he's responsible. They were actually highlighting a trick that the news often does. They don't state something outright. But they present it in such a way that people often make those inferrences.
Love this and love that you watched it. I don't want to take away from anyone else who was invcolved in this masterpiece, but I will forever love Hugo Weaving for his performance in this. No one can deliver his lines the way he does. Genius!
It’s crazy how there’s a alternative ending for the Chinese version where they don’t show the ending instead they show a text of what happened saying how they lost and got arrested. The Chinese government did this because they didn’t want people supporting anti government or supporting overruling the government.
Comic nerd here. Alan Moore is famous for disliking adaptations of his work, and this film is no different. He has never really explained why he dislikes them, but I suspect he prefers shades of Grey. Both Watchmen and V for Vendetta in comic form were much less overt in the character motivations. The film adaptations often try and draw a line to have good guys and bad guys and I think that rubs Moore the wrong way. But to answer your question, I very much like the film as an adaptation of the comic. The comic is not a particularly long read because it isn't part of a larger work. Very worth checking out. Also, fuck fascism.
I can understand why he would dislike it if his intentions were to have his characters depicted with a bit more of moral ambiguity. However when it comes to films, because it is a very popular medium to deliver stories and through them a message, it can be a double edge sword as not everyone has the same media literacy. People who read these graphic novels will always be looking to read between the lines vs watching a film which some may just take at face value. When it comes to this film you definitely don’t want the wrong people getting the wrong ideas.
I dunno, i'd submit it's not _just_ "shades of grey" but also actual _substance_ that the movies tend to lose - however many literary allusions, transgressive ideas etc. we might see in the adaptations, I think it's fair to say the comics have way more. But _also_ "shades of grey". V himself is more ambiguous in the comic i'd say (what he does to Evie is pretty hard to defend for instance - it's the kind of "means justify the ends" approach that every authoritarian regime in history has used to justify its atrocities - but in the _movie_ we see him break down afterwards, casting him in a more sympathetic, human light whereas in the book IIRC he basically just keeps calmly explaining _why_ he tortured her for weeks, like a teacher leading a student to the inevitable "right" conclusion. Ideas might be bulletproof but they also don't really _care_ about people on an individual level, which is a nuance that's greatly softened, if not entirely missing, in the movie). So even though personally i've mostly liked the adaptations (this one especially), I kinda get where Moore might be coming from too (plus I bet there's a _bit_ of just him being an old curmudgeon at this point :).
@@OfficialMediaKnights There's also the fact that Alan Moore was screwed over by DC. He signed a contract with them saying the rights for V for Vendetta and Watchmen would revert back to him after both of the comics had been out of print for a year. DC has never let either of the comics go out of print and he ended up only receiving royalties of around 8% for Watchmen which he shares with the artist of the comic, Dave Gibbons. When he realised he'd been swindled he decided never to work with DC again and refused to have his name put on any of the movie adaptions of his work. I'll admit I'm a bit of a fan boy but people write Moore off as being an oddball, miserable curmudgeon but there's a bit more to it. This is just the cliff notes version of the story but I think Alan is a fantastic writer and he has created some amazing works of literature.
I understand morally ambiguous antagonists. For example, I think Scorpius from FarScape is one of the best written villains in television. But there is nothing morally ambiguous about promoting fascism through fear and force.
I first read V For Vendetta aged 11 in 1982, when the story made its first appearance in the British monthly anthology comic, ‘WARRIOR’, many, many years before it became a graphic novel. - It was my introduction to comics for mature readers and probably not meant for my younger eyes, but I was hooked. Warrior featuring some fantastic characters such as the cyborg 'Axel Pressbutton’, the _Prisoner_ / _Avengers-esq 'Big Ben', and Hammer Horror vampire hunter, ’Father Shandor’. Warrior was an outstanding collaboration of British writers and artistic talent coming together during the early 80s, many of whom went on to bigger and well renowned works that still resonate today.
Wasn't until years later that I was old enough to look back and realise what a great time that was for comics in the UK. Even the war comics - 'Hotspur' was one i liked as a kid - often actually had a full-on anti-war message mixed with class commentary (and that's without even mentioning "2000 AD" :).
@ As current Hollywood churns out sequels and the bland, the British Comic Industry has a plethora of hugely untapped fantastical characters that could potentially become big. Hoping the new Rebellion Studios, who now own the rights to 2000ad and many other British comics heroes and characters, unleashes their much awaited film productions soon. Characterr like Axel Pressbutton, The Adventures of Halo Jones, even spooky tales from 70s supernatural girl’s comic ‘Misty’ with worlds portal story ‘The Sentinals’, ‘Nemesis the Warlock’, fantasy warrior ‘Slaine’, Eagle comic’s shapeshifting alien ‘Doomlord’, Strontium Dog, the short lived 80s British horror comic ‘Scream’ nightmare worlds with Max - the tower block psychotic computer nightmare realms on ‘The Thirteenth Floor’ to name but a few. Rebellion Studio’s output would be helped greatly if backed up by HBO or the like. A future-retro of 1950s Dan Dare (one of the UK’s first leading merchandise IPs) flight to Venus would look great. A cool anthology series of short stories with ‘Tharg’s Future Shocks’ in the same vein as Love, Death + Robots would be brilliant. Check out the excellent ‘Strontium Dog’ fan film on TH-cam. A vision of what can be, what should be.
Another Veteran Warrior reader here - do you remember that the very last panel of V for Vendetta in the Warrior run was Evey realising she'd been imprisoned in the Shadow Gallery and V's "Welcome home". What a cliffhanger.
@@anonymes2884 I was never really a sweeties eater, I much preferred spending my pocket money that I earned working a few hours for my Dad on the weekend, spent mostly on comics, bubblegum cards, stickers and practical jokes from the Joke Shop. Hard to believe in this day and age that 9 or 10 year olds were permitted to work. I'm thankful for that learning curve, it taught me about spending and saving and put my in good stead for the future and the 'big bad world' that was waiting for me around the corner. By the time Warrior arrived, I already had a few comics on order on a weekly and monthly basis, such as 2000AD, Eagle, Battle, Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly, Jackpot and a comic magazine called Tops which was like a rival to Look-in, featuring comic strips based on TV shows such as Minder, The Professionals, and Hart to Hart and pin-ups of pop stars (Post-Punk, New Romantics, Nu-Wave era). It was indeed a great time for comics, that for even the titles I didn't have on order but so wished I read and ordered on a weekly basis if it wasn't for Mum putting a limit on the amount I could bring into the house, I would pick up the Holiday and Summer Specials as tasters of the other titles, such as Tiger, Victor, Hotspur, Bananaman, Topper, Beezer, The Dandy and The Beano. I even used to read my slightly older sister's comics, specials and annuals, my favourite of hers being Misty, the 'supernatural comic for girls', now _that_ was a great comic too, and I wished that there was a spooky comic for boys to read. It wasn't until 1984 when Scream! came along and I got my wish... and of course that one went on order too! Such a shame that it's practically all gone now and kids aren't getting the kind of adventure comics we all grew up with... and still talk about them 40 years on!!
Dictatorship, oppression, corruption, desperation, fear...I always have thought about V for Vendetta like a warning: if we don't have care, evil wins. And evil always is looking for win.
This film means more to me than I can explain. I can tell you where I’ve been for the last 10 years watching this in the 5th of November. You posting it today is so perfect! 👏
Evie's "poem" is actually a well-known nursery rhyme here in the UK :). Maybe worth noting too that on "bonfire night" (the 5th of November each year, when we have fireworks, sometimes burn Guy Fawkes in effigy etc.) we're commemorating the Gunpowder Plot _failing_ and _not_ celebrating the attempt (given that it was directed at a king _and_ this movie's 'vibe', I guess people from the US might see the event as a pro-democracy "blow for freedom" but Fawkes et al actually just wanted to swap a Protestant king for Catholic rule, so not exactly "power to the people" :). And the comic is one of my all time faves but I think the film does a pretty decent job of adapting it. The main difference IMO (aside from some plot bits and bobs) is the pro democracy emphasis in the movie vs more a call to _anarchy_ in the comic - in the film V is against _corrupt_ governments, in the book he's more against _all_ governments (but "Valerie", as the chapter in the comic is called - which 30+ years on remains one of my favourite parts of _any_ comic - is still a beautiful segment in the movie which suggests to me that the Wachowskis understood the _soul_ of the book).
I was stoked when I saw this. You guys are at another level knowledge-wise when it comes to movie reactors and this movie has so much to say, excited to see what you think of it.
I'm from Chile, before the pandemic, we had a "civil unrest", it became the "Estallido". There were marches, in the capital there was a march of +1 million people, some buildings were burned (in my city they burned the SII, our version of the IRS), some people went into hunger strikes, the country was really unhappy with the government, the constitution, etc. The government of course responded with more repression, people died, around 500 people lost some vision, they lost one of their eyes to rubber bullets from police, 2 people lost both eyes. People in power tried to blame protesters for everything, an example is that some subway stations were burned, there were rumors of people being tortured down there. Even with all of that, people still went outside and protested, we were tired, we were done with everything, we felt we had nothing left to lose, so you prepared the best you could and we went outside to protest. A lot of people used the Guy Fawkes mask, including me, with a sign that read "People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people" some wrote "Behind this mask there's an idea, and ideas are bulletproof" after some deaths and more cases of eyes lost. We got what we wanted, a process to write a new constitution, but when the time came to vote for or against it, people voted against it because of lies and politicians bending the truth (unfortunately there were people using the protests for their own good, they lied, stole, destroyed just because). Now of course there's people who blame protestors "you destroyed the country", now we are left with the same constitution written during our dictatorship, but what hurts me the most is the people who died or lost their eyes for nothing. This movie used to give me hope, now it's just another fictional work.
In the novel since V is so kind to Evey, she ask him if he is her father to which he answered that he doesn´t know because he can no longer remember his own past. Which is so sad
In some matter V is the father of Evey. Her rebirth and new self is his doing. V more resembles Adam, who had Eve formed from his rib. And it his Evey, who will decide her future by accepting knowledge or choosing ignorance, truth or lie and V giving her the apple aka the leaver to start the finale.
I remember when this movie came out it was a BIG deal. Some were worried about terrorist attacks, people getting ideas. They did group screenings and discussions. Fantastic film.
GREAT reaction!! This movie completely blew me away when I saw it. Acting is so on point, Natalie Portman is excellent, but especially with Mr. Hugo Weaving - the conveyance of mood through voice & action without facial expression was incredible! John Hurt (RIP) is also got to be commended on such a villainous, but superb performance! The cinematography, effects, pacing & music were also perfection! The parallels to past (and regretfully current) 'regimes' is startling, scary and poignant. Control through fear has long been a modus operandi of governments, societies, groups. Anyone would be naive to think that it can't happen again! Cheers!!
@@kevinpogue7294 They were arrested for inciting violence and potential murder against innocent people - the medium via which they conveyed that is irrelevant. It's called terrorism, and we have laws against that.
One of my favorite movies. Hugo Weaving was amazing in this, and the story was so significant to me personally as someone who has observed government infringement and the fall of journalism increase over the years across the globe in countries I never would have thought would happen, especially in mine!
Funny subtle script joke. After the Bailey Tower is blown up early in the movie... Government surveillance official: "The CD was Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture". High Chancellor Sutler: "Add it to the black list. I never want to hear that music again." ...and he didn't. He was shot dead just before that music played again while Parliament was blown up! LOL. Love it!
32:00 A lot of reactors think, "Why is he making fun of the chancellor? They're going to kill him." But making fun of a feared authoritarian takes away some of his power. People start to fear him less. So I think Gordon's sketch was a big help to the revolution.
This is why I LOVE you two! You have the intelligence and the passion to get the message and the style of a movie like this. I really like this movie, and my wife and I have seen it several times. And here it is, being the 5th of November, and I did my part in voting against fascism this morning. Here's a movie dichotomy: My wife and I just watched 1984 a couple of days ago, where John Hurt plays a man rebelling against the dictator whose big face is on the screen. And in V for Vendetta, he is the dictator whose face is on the screen.
I love this movie. Seen in dozens of times... and v's speech at the beginning to the people where he tells them that if they are looking for who caused whats wrong they need to look in a mirror never hit me before like it does now after the election. WE did it.
Exactly right! And right now the government in the US is in a lot of fear, because they're about to lose a lot of power. D.O.G.E will shrink government!
Extremely underrated comic book movie, one of the best out there and it's honestly my favourite DC movie. I saw this in cinemas and it was amazing. You don't see Hugo weavings face once, yet he absolutely killed it and showed so much emotion with just his voice and body language.
*“Remember, remember, the 5th of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever…..be…..forgot.” - V* I still say this to myself every November 5th ever since I saw this movie when I was 15 when it was released. And while I believe that the government should do for the people what the people can’t do for each other, I also couldn’t agree more with V *”People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people”* Go and vote
During the TV parody they used the theme from the Benny Hill Show (Yakety Sax) which I used to watch when I was a kid with my grandma and my great aunt and it's still cracks me up to this day.
If the US proved it can reject government overreach in such an undeniable election, the UK can too. More arrests in the UK or speech than Russia? (Not that Russia gives accurate numbers) If you are there stay strong and don't give in.
Remember remember the fifth of November the gunpowder treason and plot I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot. One of my favorite movies great reaction y'all.
Such a great movie! A perfect metaphor on how totalitarianism works, and can be defeated. When people start to think by themselves again, a lot of things can happen.
The casting of John Hurt in this was great. He starred in the movie version of 1984 as Winston Smith, whereas in this he was basically playing the 'Big Brother' role.
Just watched whole video - you are one of my go-to/favorite reactors and love your insightful post-discussions, unlike some reactors that only do a couple of minutes of afterthoughts. Every time I see this movie or reaction to it, I just love it a little bit more.

But Trump is bad for being frustrated when one of those outlets uses one of those fake stories like the Russia hoax in a joke because we all knew the outlet wasnt joking, they still claim the lies are true to this day.
To the American (or just non-British) audience: You need to understand the history of Guy Fawkes to fully appreciate this story. I find it ironic that Guy Fawkes is a symbol of attempting to take down what he thought was a tyrannical government, and yet the UK has a far more tyrannical government than Guy Fawkes had, yet they still celebrate Bonfire Night, essentially celebrating the tyrannical regime winning. But look at the parallels: A media that spins the truth to protect the government, just like in the current Western World. A regime that attempt to crush political opposition, accusing them of extreme violence when they know it's false - J6 anyone? Searching for the truth is a dangerous activity, you need to just shut up and watch what is fed to you on the TV (idiot box). Is it any wonder why so many people are fed up with it, want a reduced government, and want politicians to be held to account?
This someone who is paying attention and sees and they say we support trump because of him it could of been anyone as long as it was the same ideals of smaller government and people being brought to account.
@@samellowery Yes, it's not the person, it's the agenda. Don't want a one-world globalist government when the common people like me have no freedom. Glad you guys got to watch this. This movie was incredible and in my top 10 list for sure. Hugo Weaving's protrayal of V was nothing less than perfect. How he was able to show emotion through body langauge was amazing to watch. Such a powerful movie with some of the most fantastic dialogue.
Alan Moore is a savant. But he hates every movie that is made from his work. In some cases I agree, in others not so much. Moore cut his teeth on 2000AD, a British anti-establishment weekly comic from the 1970s which for some insane reason was stocked on retailer shelves next to The Beano. My first intronduction was a 1978 2000AD annual I bought from a church jumble sale when I was only 8. Inside was an image of a man screaming in agony whilst being incinerated by a missile, another being impaled on a spike, and the absolute worst... someone being mauled by a polar bear. I was hooked. Moore started by writing Future Shocks, short cautionary tales which were loaded with satirical wit. He went on to write my favourite of his works, The Ballad of Halo Jones, Watchmen, V For Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which you will find on the shelves of any serious collector. V For Vendetta is absolutely packed. This film barely scratches the surface. Zack Snyder's Watchmen should be on your list.
This video came out on Nov 5 2024, where the US is having an election deciding whether they want a future like the one in this movie. Let's see what they will choose.

@@scooter1687 How so? The people taking office are literally LEADING with "FREE SPEECH" as their primary concern. They have the biggest advocates for Free Speech with them, so tell me how they are the people like the government shown here? Because they're "Christian"? As it happens, it's the anti-Christian governments throughout the west that are stifling Free Speech. The US had it for 4 years now, and a lot of Europe and other places has had it and still has it for a long longer. Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Germany, etc. All suffering from laws attacking "thought crime". People getting arrested for facebook posts. People getting arrested for petty insults.
The graphic novel is actually a lot darker than the movie. V is more ruthless than charming than the movie version. Also, Hugo Weaving did such an incredible job of playing V. The Dialog was next level. Such a interesting and complex character. 5:43 I always wondered how many takes it took to get that dialog right. I would've been tongue twisted the entire time.
Oh that's interesting!! We loved this V - his charm made him so much more complex as a character! Also seriously, that must have taken a bunch of takes, what dialogue!!
I think they kinda had to make the screen version more appealing because we need to sympathise with him to some extent and when you _see_ someone doing bad things (like what V does to Evie), it's harder to sympathise than when you "just" read them do it (even "reading with pictures" :). But yeah, V is NOT a hero, he's a very profoundly damaged man whose redeeming quality is that he's able to point his rage and pain at the right target.
The imagery hits a little deeper as an Englishman because it's set in London but the social commentary is universal and in recent years this film is all the more relevant. Since it's release in 2005 I watch this film every year on Guy Fawkes night.
This is one of my most cherished movies of my life. I appreciate your genuine interest and analysis of such a well written story. I appreciate your love for Valerie's powerful story; and how you chose to not edit out gay scenes (because it is much more than just that.) like other reactors have done. I'll always love this movie. And I enjoy seeing others watch it for the first time. My favorite little easter egg that gets overlooked is when V says "Conceal me, what I am and be my aid. For such disguises shall happily be the form of my intent." During their dance on the eve of his revolution. V is reciting lines from Twelfth Night. On Evey's first morning with V she told him that "My Mum, she used to read all his plays to me, and ever since i've always wanted to act. In plays, movies. When I was nine I played Viola in Twelfth Night." The whole time Evey was gone V always thought of her and remembered. It is so easy to overlook this and it beautifully shows how much V loves Evey.
You guys are my top favourite movie reactors! This channel is just always positive all the time and I'm loving it! If you haven't seen this already, you guys should watch the Rocky franchise you will love it! Keep being awesome! 🙏❤
This is a textbook definition of propoganda, and what should be shown to people who don't understand the differences between miscommunication and propoganda. It also shows a very dangerous and real concern about what happens when you have a police state that controls access to information and media outlets. Read into those statements however and whatever you wish. This movie should serve as a warning and a caution of what happens once that ball starts rolling. Yes, I realize it is just a movie, adapted from a graphic novel. However, the movie came out in 2005. Kind of crazy how close it got to everything that has happened since 2020 despite coming out 15 years before any of that ever happened. Maybe it was just all super accurate guesswork of potential problems of society. 🤷♂️. Great reaction to a great movie. I also agree that Hugo Weaving should have been nominated for an Oscar for his role. I wonder if the fact he wore a mask for the entire movie is what kept him from receiving one.
I've always found this film to be criminally underrated and undervalued. I point people towards watching it whenever I can and I am so glad you guys covered it. The performances are outstanding and I am so happy you both saw this.
I was a huge fan of the comic and was really excited when this was getting made. Back then, I felt like it softened the message of fascism/anarchy too much. There's no denying that they did soften it in some ways but upon rewatching it recently and watching you guys react to it, I'm definitely seeing it more for what it is and less for what I wanted it to be so long ago. It's not a perfect remake but it's become timeless and accessible in a way a true adaptation might have failed. The way they do Evie's imprisonment is so good and aside from Evie being older (she was 16 in the comic), it's very accurate in those scenes. Definitely worth reading the graphic novel. Alan Moore wrote it about Margaret Thatcher in the 80s and its message is even more relevant today.

Hugo Weaving deserved an oscar nomination. His line delivery was so spot on that the mask never hindered his performance.
Omg yes, his performance was INCREDIBLE! We felt every emotion and we didn't see his face even once!!
sadly he wasn't the initial actor, so some of the footage was not of him, and that took it away apperently even if 99% of it was him and only 1% of V in the movie was another actor. It is really sad as he was so damn good in this movie.
@@mahliz That other actor is a great one named James Purefoy
So did Natalie Portman.
Hugo is an actor that is high above many other actors. He's in a league of his own, be it V, agent Smith, Elrond or countless others.
Wondering if this role could have been a step up for James Purefoy's career, even considering that fact...
Karl Urban's role in Dredd, was similar. He had to act only showing half his face, and he nailed it.
I believe it's usually the studio that has the most issue with hiding actors' faces. They're spending so much money on famous actors that they want their face visible as much as possible. Real actors have no problem with hiding themselves

@@wiegandweitz9763 - Nah... normal people wanted something else... Much more than following, unless you are from US:
1. Medical?
God bless you, and God bless the United Kingdom!🇬🇧

In Evie's rebirth scene you can see the difference between her and V he was reborn in fire and rage while she was reborn in water and joy. That's why he left the decision up to her in the end he knew he was a monster driven by his darker emotions and was no longer certain he was doing the right thing. So he passed the torch to someone he knew was truly good. When the Domino's fell one was left standing the one he didn't control and couldn't predict it represents Evie.
Very well put!🖤
neh .. it represent pure free will ... dominos falling stand for actions have consequences, and people that follow...
like V said ... people are just flesh and blood ... but an idea can withstand anything, even when everything arround it falls like dominos
Exactly, very well said. And that's why the one left standing piece was next to the train lever.
That's a good angle to look at it but, like music, movies messages can be various.

Nobody has mentioned this as it seems, so I'm gonna do that: John Hurt playing the High Chancellor as an enlarged Zoom screen appearance is actually an homage to one of his most prominent roles: the protagonist in "1984" where he is going up against Big Brother.
The revolution is an international idea for all, not only for the British or the Americans

Gotta add Zorro to the list!
@@OfficialMediaKnights you should, he's awesome
I'd argue V's more of a hero than an anti-hero.
@@SSD_Penumbra true but Heroes don't kill bad people. that's the Anti-hero's job
@@rickymoranjr9609 True, but if those people are evil, then you could argue the hero has beaten evil.
Wait what!? Wow! Nothing more to say…the film speaks for itself.

Moore is also a self absorbed, cantankerous blowhard, so there is that to consider.
😅 45:44 he is Hugo Weaving...one of the best actors who can do any role given
Evie's "poem" is actually a well-known nursery rhyme here in the UK :).
Anarchy and democracy is pretty much the same thing. Look at the etymology. Without a king vs by the people and the poor.
Tremendo resumen de lo que pasó en nuestro país. Y muy bien redactado en inglés. Te felicito!
They didnt do all that for nothing. Look ahead mate and keep hope.
I'm so sorry the process failed you.
In the novel since V is so kind to Evey, she ask him if he is her father to which he answered that he doesn´t know because he can no longer remember his own past. Which is so sad
That would have been an interesting twist! We never really found out who "V" was......😊
In some matter V is the father of Evey. Her rebirth and new self is his doing.
V more resembles Adam, who had Eve formed from his rib. And it his Evey, who will decide her future by accepting knowledge or choosing ignorance, truth or lie and V giving her the apple aka the leaver to start the finale.
Hugo Weaving has such an iconic voice. If you ever see this movie again, I am sure you recognize his voice right away when he captures Eve.
Cheers!!
Welcome to the UK 2024, this film feels more like a documentary now than a 1980's fantasy graphic novel!

32:00 A lot of reactors think, "Why is he making fun of the chancellor? They're going to kill him." But making fun of a feared authoritarian takes away some of his power. People start to fear him less. So I think Gordon's sketch was a big help to the revolution.

I still say this to myself every November 5th ever since I saw this movie when I was 15 when it was released. And while I believe that the government should do for the people what the people can’t do for each other, I also couldn’t agree more with V *”People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people”*

To the American (or just non-British) audience:
You need to understand the history of Guy Fawkes to fully appreciate this story.
But look at the parallels:
A media that spins the truth to protect the government, just like in the current Western World.

Hope you get free of the government jailing people for "thought crimes" and facebook posts as soon as possible!
When I was nine I played Viola in Twelfth Night."
The whole time Evey was gone V always thought of her and remembered.
It is so easy to overlook this and it beautifully shows how much V loves Evey.
to add. It shows how much the human side of V loves Evey. The shell
the core is the idea. And ideas do not love.
I cannot think of a single actor that would give V's voice the gravitas that Hugo Weaving does. The way that man enunciates words is hypnotizing.

Man, I miss john Hurt.

@@bemindful924 Wtf do you mean? The guys fighting for FREE SPEECH won. The party of censorship lost. Unlike in the UK, Australia and other countries, where political parties arresting people for speech and "thought crimes" is still ongoing.
A world where for the fear of a disease they gave up all theyr freedom.......wait where did i see this recently?
2020
Where a dictator rises to power and tries to remove all foreign ideas and religions and forces LGBTQ people to exist in silence lest they be targeted by the government.

Still ongoing. A lot of governments are more authoritarian than ever. UK, Australia, France, Germany, the US (last 4 years), etc. US is now trying to turn sharply away from censorship and we can only hope they succeed, else the rest of us here in Europe are quite doomed.
A special and genius movie, all thanks to the wonderful graphic novel (1982-1985), a story of its time, but essentially timeless. Add a fantastic cast and you do have a masterpiece. And one of best reactions I have seen - so many miss the subtleties and just giggle a lot! Loved it.
This was one of my prized movies... Powerful. I cry every time. Loved your commentary and what ya'll brought to this... definitely why I watch ya'll... 🤙🏽🌊🙏🏾🥂 Cheerio.
I’m from the UK. This movie is currently a documentary for my country. And that ain’t hyperbole 😢
That's so devastating to hear - it's also so upsetting that too many elements in this movie resonate with the world right now...
@@OfficialMediaKnights So true. But it’s a bloody great movie though! Awesome reaction as always guys! ❤️
It absolutely is a bloody great movie! Thank you so much for your kindness and support, it truly means the world to us ❤️
But it sure as hell isn’t some theocratic right-wing authoritarianism you’re suffering under.
@@RGSRinc Exactly this. A lot of absolute morons can't seem to fathom that this exact government can exist while it's not "conservative" or "christian". Nothing Christian about the government depicted in the movie at all. Apparently they never heard of Stalin, Mao, Castro, etc.
