To be fair, Gale is one of the few companions you can only "be intimate with" after developing the romance first. You can't just bang him casually - well you can, but you'd be playing with his feelings, seeing as how he confesses love to Tav before initiating any kind of physical intimacy. So like imagine you made love to someone you really care about for the first time and you're pouring your heart out to them about how much it meant to you and they're just like, "Whatever it was fine." I'd be pretty hurt too. That being said his little, "I could blow myself up at any moment" speech is just plain fucking funny, especially knowing that he actually would never do it unless Tav told him to.
Hmmm.. that exact scenario happened to me with my ex-girlfriend. So I can relate to Gale being pissed off lol

Gale is depressed, and has absolutely no self esteem. He's also a victim of Mystra grooming him - he was a kid when she started getting inappropriate, and she truly used him as a plaything for her amusements. The orb problem was his fault, sure, but he only did it to try to prove himself to his - well, to his abuser / Goddess.
Karlach, Gale, Wyll, Shadowheart, Laezael, and Astarion all have this in common: they're trying to get past their relationships with abusive, manipulative , magical beings. They're all striving towards freedom. They all have flaws. They over-react to the beings in both directions (both by doing too much for the being, and later, by doing too much to try to get away.)
I love watching all of their quests progress, and I plan on seeing the ends of all of them eventually, even if I can't do them all in the same play through (but I'm trying. I'm a bit stumped about one right now, but I'm working on it.)
People can see the common theme in the other companions yet completely miss it with Gale. The orb being his fault doesn't mean Mystra was innocent either. It's even clearer in Gale's romance, with all the grand promises he makes to Tav and him trying to be something more. Mystra has wraped his perception of what it means to be loved and he doesn't think he's worthy of any unless he proves himself

@@maristea5321 It's kinda insane how accomplished he is. Like...he has a lot of desirable traits. He has a whole tower and library, a cat, is very smart and powerful, he literally asks to cook for you if you ever go to waterdeep?
But he's been so abused he has dangerously low self-esteem. He already has a lot of good qualities people find attractive in others but he wasn't made to feel like enough by his ex at all.
She's also a goddess and he's a mortal. Try to come up with a bigger power imbalance than that.
One of the things I hate the most is when I read of people not liking him because he's "not over his ex". They clearly did not understand a single thing about him if that's what they think. Sure he has feelings for her, a lot and all difficult (his words), but the same is for Astarion with Cazador, the same is for Lae'zel with Vlaakith ect. Obviously, she was his lover in the past, but he has ptsd for being groomed, abused and left out to rotten for a mistake he made just to do something nice for her. Not to mention, he's been locked in a tower with no interactions with anything or anyone outside of it for more than a year, the only thing he could think of it's obviously her and what happened between them. I'd probably be the same as him in his situation.@@damien678

In the romance scene where Gale tells Tav "you love me for the man I am, not the magic I command. None have loved me so purely before." He measures his own worth with his magic prowess and it makes sense why he ended up with such low self-esteem

i think what people gotta remember is Gale is supposed to represent the follys of humanity. he represents a lot of shortcomings humans have like overzealous ambition, hubris, etc--compared to all the cosmic beings humans are surrounded with they arent given much credit for keeping up with all the other races. but gale/wyll also represent all the good things too like romanticism and passion because out of all the companions those 2 have the more romantic idealism and fleeting emotions that humans are prone to. they dont have the luxury of living 700 years and they gotta make the most of their comparatively short time. i like that both wyll and gale are flawed as they are--they literally are only human. not everyone has the luxry of an extra 200 years to mature and outgrow bad personality traits
I'm doing the Gale romance right now. I'm only in Act 1 (towards the end of it) and I honestly think most if not all of the hate he gets is undeserved. Maybe my opinion would be different had I done early access. 🤷♀️
--I'd be stuck up if I was good enough at magic from a young age that the literal goddess magic took very **personal** interest in me.
--I'd also be hesitant to tell someone I just met "by the way, I have a magic nuke in my chest" (Astarion doesn't tell you he's a vampire at the start and Shadowheart doesn't tell you she worships Shar. Both things that are also considered bad by the general populace).

All this Gale hate when the man **LITERALLY** conjured the moon, stars, a massive field, among other shit depending on which option you picked for your night of passion. I'd kinda be mad too if all I got for that the next morning was "fine". That's like cooking your lover a gourmet meal full of dishes you know they like and getting a similar, unenthusiastic response when you ask how it was.
I'd be mad and hurt too, but that doesn't mean you get to make death threats... Gale is a good character and can be really sweet, but he is 100% toxic bf energy and if someone acts like that irl get out of there. I speak from experience.

I think his romance flag bug has people misunderstanding the poor guy and as someone who got their Tav with him and got his full backstory I will say he’s absolutely not that type of character 😅 hes spent his life being valued for magic and has no self esteem but he is a good type of wizard
The romance scene before this isn’t a casual one. He declares his love for Tav and spends ages preparing a grand gesture of how he feels before any intimacy. So it makes sense he’d be this upset.

Something is triggering his romance when it shouldn't and I hope Larian patches it soon because Gale is getting way too much hate and a lot of people are getting nive guy vibes from him because of it.

Yeah, he does do the whole "don't shake the fragile man-bomb", line as a kind of threat, BUT he does then immediately take it back and confess he's just stressed out with everything going on. I wouldn't say Gale is trying to be manipulative, but he is rather sensitive. I can only imagine how much Mystra made him feel like he was never good enough for her love and favor. Feeling inadequate as a lover is understandably triggering for him.

There's a bit of context missing here. This dialogue prompts right after his second romance scene, and in that scene he believes it'll be his last night alive so he does everything he can to make it special for Tav. That night meant a lot to him and he let his emotions get the better of him. Heck, he even caught himself going too far and apologizes right after. Gale isn't a perfect guy, but he's not the toxic incel people are paint him out to be

I enjoyed Gale romance until he brought up Mystra for the billionth time then asked to go see her in act 3 and I said no as best I could with the dialogue choices allowed but in the end the quest marker appeared anyway. I felt like a third wheel or a second best. I broke up with him.
Mystra is his goddess and played a huge part in his life, it makes sense why he'll bring her up in random convos. The part where Mystra asks for an audience with him wasn't bad in my game. He didn't go see Mystra to rekindle their relationship
She groomed him
Gale having the one-on-one talk with Mystra is a huge and mandatory part of not only his questline but the main storyline as well. It's not something you can just put off, it's central to the whole netherbrain and crown of karsus plot. What you can do is help Gale make up his mind about whether or not he should trust her.

Gale is, I'm pretty sure, a narcissist. That doesn't make him a bad person, necessarily, but it DOES definitely make him have some pretty bad character flaws that pop up pretty hard every once in a while.

Actually no, it just depends on your choices. Astarion and Lae’zel i believe, can be very toxic if you dont stroke their ego too. Not sure about others. So far i’ve only romanced these 3 and Karlach (sweetheart through and through evne if you are mean to her).
Gale can be very, very sweet. I tried breaking up with him and he was softly speaking about his disappointment in himself. That he gave his heart to me foolishly too easily or something like that. There are 10+ breaking up reactions btw depending on your response. @@reeeyou Yeah, it's not surprising he's a bit arrogant. His relationship with Mystra is complicated, but he mentions that she took interest in him because of his abilities. The reason why I like Gale's romance so much is because Gale thinks he needs to give grand displays of magic or chase power to win over Tav, and this is probably because being with a goddess made him believe he's only worthy if he proves himself. Which is why it was so satisfying seeing Tav convince Gale that he was enough as he is.
He's mostly sweet and there are times he comes off as an ass. I still think he's great, flaws and all :)

So I found out the end dialogue where he very cornily says something like “I dare anyone to try and stop me” is something he actually says more seriously if you don’t tease him.
NOW I see his grandiose dialogue in a very different way. Man needs to brainstorm with Astarion because they are BOTH practicing their lines lmao.

No other combination of characters will work and you’ll have to choose one person.

I love the voice acting and the way he articulates himself. I like to have honest romantics in the mix (even though I am not one usually) and he looks good.
But why in the nine hells does he kisses me like he would kiss our child goodnight and had no hands free for a cuddle? What did Mystra do to him? One would think shagging a goddes would leave you with some skill at it. (Well, or he just got used to doinhg it all through magical expression and never actually learned to physically kiss great...)

Feels like "it was fine" is the cannon choice for this and you basically either stroke his ego or tell the truth. I think most of the other romance option don't even get a "fine" option after sleeping with them.
