This is the best ending by far. I have cried over Astarion, because all he ever wanted was to be seen as a person, to be free, to be genuinely loved and cared for. And this is the ending that does it.

Its the ending he deserves ☺️ being free, seen as a person and genuinely loved ❤️❤️❤️ he wanted something real with TAV now he absolutely have that, you are by his side the whole time supporting from afar in the ritual when he kills Cazador and are there for him in various ways
I approached Astarion romantically and Astarion looked me dead in the eyes and said "It's not you... It's me. I have standards" 😭😭 literally felt like I was getting rejected by my crush in middle school again and almost cried😂

From the dialogue afterwards at camp, it sounds like that to me the most.
Sure, he says that having all the power would have been fun. The idea is entertaining and feels empowering. But he follows that up by saying how he is now feels more "me" and that he felt himself fading away in the dungeon being so close to the ritual.
If that doesn't tell people that losing all he has gained throughout the journey, including Tav, would have been the worst outcome (something he also says in one of the options), then I don't know what will.
I get that playing as Ascended Astarion is fun bc he gets a ridiculous attack etc, but all his lines and interactions feel extremely uncomfortable. That's not someone who has found himself. It's someone who has lost everything to gain power. Power can get you only so far.
It's far more of a loss to sacrifice all meaningful relationships and the ability to ever gain them again since your soul is gone for good.

@@norelle28 yup, replayed it to see what happens when you let him Ascend and then break up with him immediately afterwards, before becoming his spawn. He accepts your decision and seems to respect you more, but you can tell from his voice inflections that it's very much a "What have I done?" moment for him, as yes, he got power. And it cost him everything.
The way he says "This is a gift, you know." as a BOOKEND TO (near) THE BEGINNING OF HIS STORY WITH TAV IF THEY LET HIM TAKE THEIR BLOOD HIT ME SO HARD.

Astarion is such a nuanced character that it could have been easy to stumble bringing him to life, but the animation is so good and Neil Newbon really nails his voice acting.
"im surprised you didnt go through with it. i was sure you were a powerhungry madman" is one of my favorite options. he always seems to cheer up the moment Tav starts bullying him. he says "well im glad i at least still have the power to surprise you!" he loves arguing with them😂
That and “are we here to piss on someone’s grave” I haven’t personally used it but it sounds absolutely hilarious

I love this ending, I feel sad he can't go into the sunlight but he's can be so sweet.
I feel like its a worthy trade off, he traded sunlight for freedom and happiness, the ritual would have given him sunlight but a constant desire for power that would have chained him more than living in the shadows ever could.
My Tav is a drow. We'll get a place in the Underdark. It's gonna work out :)

Ascended Astarion is by far his worst ending. It’s wild that some people try to make it out to be something good.

I don't even play but I want to ascend him mainly because comment pointed that in DND lore a vampire is lawful evil and takes his ideals to the extreme.

Aw Astarions character is so much better with this 'good' ending - When you let him ascend he is completely different , I much prefer this version of him! You can really notice the difference when he says I love you as a spawn instead of Ascended......Ascended Astarion sort of chokes on it and follows with 'That's what you wanted to hear wasn't it?' but here, in the graveyard, I think his love confession just pours out of him 🥰
This Astarion broke away form the cycle of continued abuse. His master Cazador suffered the same from his master before him and so on. Astarion broke away
Agree! Vampire lord Astarion is him literally becoming the thing he hated most, and Tav is just a possession to him in that ending, not an equal. @@InaKreka
In my playthrough Astarion didnt even have the chance to ascend. I was looking at Cazador’s buff and like “oh… so you need to drain all 7 to ascend… so what if i just.. you know.. kill one of the other 6”

He gets drunk off of his power when he ascends… this person in the video though. This is the true astarion.
I like how his speaking voice even becomes less campy (less like his old master's) , reflecting the changes he's gone through.
My friend just introduced me to this game a few days ago and Astarion is her favorite character. I'm inclined to agree, given what I've seen. This, for instance, is incredibly moving. The joy and relief in his whole attitude is just beautiful.

More than the love scene (which is perfect btw), I really enjoy the dialogue in the end. Astarion nervously chuckles when you mention he was unrecognizable in the ritual chamber, he understands how the temptation for power briefly transformed him. He is now glad, giddy with happiness that you stopped him. You save him truly, and you save him not just from Cazador but from himself, from losing himself. Ascension would have utterly destroyed him and his spirit.
In that one moment when he is lured by that power, you - his lover, partner and friend - are able to see AND show him that he didn't need it. Because he is already perfect without it. That is true love. It is subtle but sublime and I adore Larian for nailing this aspect. Love doesn't have to be romantic only, you can platonically love Astarion as a friend throughout and still make this choice for him because you see him as more than what he perceives himself to be. And you truly want him to be free.
Even if you tell him you did nothing, he rebukes it and says that you believed in him which is what matters to him the most. It is your belief, that he could be someone else, that he is enough the way he is, that he doesn't need to chase any more conquests to make himself worthy is what he truly wanted, not just freedom. It shows here that he has moved on, he laughs and chuckles heartily even when discussing the ritual or Cazador because it's all just silly to him, he has moved on.
It warms my heart when I hear him say that anything and everything feels possible to him in the future. Such a simple thing is such an achievement to him. Just heavenly.
Still my preferred version of Astarion.

I completely romanced Astarion in my first play-through and supported his ascension, which corroded away any hope of him ever being a "good" guy. Next time, I'll do this for my beautiful Bitey Boi. I like him more like this; he's more open, still funny, and relatable. He turns very cold and distant when ascended, even if you're fully and solidly romanced with him.
I have a thing for the "pretty little man" in rpgs. I did the same thing in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Created an Inquisitor to romance Dorian and help him get through his issues. LOL
What surprises me is the lack of persuade check to get him to not finish the ritual (at least, that's what my sister told me. And he wasn't even a regular member of her party when she fought Cazador, let alone her romance so her approval was likely not very high)
From what I've seen, you can only persuade him not to do it if he loves you/has a high approval of you.
First I was given a persuasion and insight check (the insight check specifically called him my lover so I don't know that there would be one for simply having high approval). I passed both (though I don't think passing both is necessary, I was simply curious) and was given two different options for persuading him: one saying something about wanting him to be happy and the other saying something along the lines of I wanted him to live a life he was proud of and that he couldn't be proud if he became like Cazador. I chose the latter of the two options and he told me I was right then he ended Cazador's existence.
I had max approval and was romancing him, and I did still have to persuade him. I had advantage, bc I successfully insighted his mental state tho. The big thing is that when he is asking you to help him finish the ritual, you have to bring up saving the other spawn and get him to remember his empathy. After that, I had to roll a persuasion check, but it was decently low for how late in the game it was. If you outright refuse to help him or just focus on thinking of himself, he will leave your party if you don't let him ascend. Like immediately. It's pretty interesting, honestly.
This is all barring some situation that I don't know about, of course. Some classes/the dark urge origin/finding specific things at the right time can sometimes change the dialogue more than you may expect.
If you accidentally take down any of the spawn during combat you won’t get a persuasion check because the ritual cannot be finished
Every time i see a video of Astarion being evil as the ascended or just the answers he gives when he disapproves of Tav, i always have to come back to this video and pray that when i play this game i get this ending 😭😭❤️

So we can't be turned into a vampire in the "good" route ?
Well, in the bad route, Astarion doesn't offer to turn you into a true vampire, but his spawn. The same thing he was to cazador. And in that ending, blinded by power, he no longer sees you as an equal. He starts calling you his pet and actually thinks you're degrading yourself by becoming a spawn. Astarion once said that the only true threat to a vampire is another vampire. So I think the reason he makes you a spawn is because you'll be a threat to him. And it doesn't help that he already doesn't see you as an equal after ascending

How can you say that? After watching this! He may not be able to walk in the sun at the moment, but just look at the way he talks about the ritual afterwards! How *happy* he is that you stopped him from continuing this cycle of abuse that taught him nothing but to live in fear. He literally says: "I never have to fear anyone again.", before he wants to ascend. His live after ascension is still ruled by fear, which is clear seeing the obsession with Tav that he develops, never wanting her to leave, hence making her a spawn. It's cruel to think so- so unnuanced. You try to show him in the game that he is his own person, that he is enough as he is, that he is free to do as he likes, then you go and let him ascend to make all that character growth worthless? Pathetic :0 plus: true vampires don't have 'equals', Astarion by calling you his equal defied vampiric ruling, defies the rules set by Cazador, as ascended he calls you his consort, resorting to the same euphemisms Cazador did, calling his spawns 'family'. :I (I care far too much about a fictional character)

You can for the most part since one of the options when he confesses is to let him know that Tav and Astarion can be together without sleeping together for as long as he needs. They need to add other ways to show affection though because the only option is kissing.

I love how sweet, caring, and protective Astarion gets in the end when he's not ascended. The ending makes me wish we had a cuddle button for after this so our characters who love him can give him some cuddles. Let him feel as warm and safe as our characters feel whenever he chimes in to speak up for us.

You basically get all of the kisses animations from other characters and you can use them on whoever you want to (they work as a spell slot). SH's kiss animations on Astarion look super cute :)) (and you can hug anyone!)

It bugs me now, that the in-game dialogue constantly has Astarion saying he was a spawn for “nearly 200 years”. The key words being “nearly” or “almost”, when we’ve gotten confirmation through media and interviews that he was turned over 200 years ago. They did this so that we couldn’t just steal Gale’s scroll of True Resurrection to cure Astarion’s vampirism. 😤
