Just a suggestion..You can buy the plastic runners for boat trailers..they come in thin, wide strips and will make Any weight drawer slide easier…plus, they’re long enough for any size drawer..attaches with either Velcro or screws…I think they’re called easy glides?.. not sure, but you can search under boat trailer products..
Thank you and that’s amazing! Yes, please follow!!! It’s an exciting lifestyle to say the least. Ill have an updated video soon and I’ll also start traveling a bit. Happy New Years!
I recommend mounting the catalytic heater on the truck bed wall between the bed and the propane tank. Then I would replace the rubber hose to the propane tank with a short copper tube with an inline adjustable shut off valve to the heater. Then I would seal the cabinet around the propane tank and drill a hole in the bottom of the truck bed in the cabinet so that if there is a leak most of the propane will drain out.
Very functional. Stick with the storage bins. I would suggest adding two fold down legs to your hinged lift up door on your custom cabinet. Would give you a table to eat on, a desk to work on or watch movies and a solid surface to cook on in bad weather. Very nice job though.
Thank you, I appreciate that! Yeah, I didn’t think about multiple purposes for that flip up. In small spaces you MUST have multiple purposes for everything. Thank you again
Great job. I WOULD GO FOR THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. I have the drawer, then cut the plywood on top of bed frame in 3 pieces with holes for lifting and can still get "stuff" out inside of camper. I first had only the totes and I was constantly climbing inside to dig out the one I needed.
Looking like a good build. The only thing I'd suggest (besides the CO2/Carbon Monoxide detector that is) would have to be two 10gal water jugs. One for fresh water the other for grey water and install a sink/faucet system (it can have a manual pump or a 12v pump). That way you have potable water and if needed a way to keep not only yourself but dishes clean.
Thank you! I appreciate that. It’s definitely coming along. I will look into the water supply, I usually just have water jugs in the front but seems like a good idea.
This is what i've been thinking, although what do you think the benefits would be to have a grey water tank taking up space? As opposed to just a fresh water tank and sink with no drain, just maybe a rectangle container that acts as a sink/storage and you can just toss the water out manual out the back when it gets too much?
@@alev4287 1) with a water filter system you could technically make the grey water back to potable. 2) you wouldn't have a pool of soapy water running away from your vehicle. 3) you wouldn't have to only use biodegradable soaps. 4) if you fry something you can wash your pan without having to dump the oil on the ground.
I ordered a leer 120 camper shell. Watching a lot of TH-cam vids to get ideas of how I can build a set up for my needs. I like what you’ve done and how you did it better than any others on TH-cam!!! So, great work and creativity!
Nice! That’s a nice shell. Congrats. Don’t get me wrong, I did the same thing and watched a few other videos, nothing wrong with that. This is just the conclusion when I couldn’t find anything that I was looking for. If you have any questions about anything, just holler. Good luck with the idea and build!
Simple and functional. Personally I went with an ARE shell that has the extra head room, but that's what great about truck builds.. you design it around yourself. Save the weight, drawers are nice until its pouring outside and you want to get something out of it. Couple of legs on the inside of that flip top will let you use it as a table for eating, or laptop editing videos, etc. You can even put a small wood strip on the bottom of the cubby so the legs rest on that instead of the floor. couple cuts off a single 1x2 and two small hinges would do the job. Unless you want to get fancy and run with a 12v linear actuator. Just my two cents. Nice work!
Thank you for all that! I appreciate the advice. With the rain, that is the main reason I don’t want drawers. It’s just so much room with drawers! I’ve done a little work to the setup since I posted this video. I’ll do a follow up so you can see the progress, subscribe/check back so you can see!
Nice start . Cubes are best unless u want to spend $$$ on draw glides . Window coverings depends on Where & When u use it . find FrostKing Duct foam insulation , foam board / Corplast for window foams . Make window forms 2 fit . Cover both sides with frost king - u now have covers with sun heat reflect & R Six . White RV paint on top will save also .
I really appreciate the feedback! I decided against the pull out and went with the cubes for ease of use. I had window coverings, but I forgot to put them back on for the video. As for the installation, I’m going to look into that with my 4Runner, I sold my truck. Has a similar setup in the 4Runner and I made a video on that too. Thank you!
I am a 71 year old retired cabinetmaker and builder. I have my complete cabinet shop and tools to do one of these. I have a F150 XLT with the same Leer topper. I am planning on having just a small electric heater and staying in a campground with hookups if it is cold. I am kind of phobic about gas of any sort in that small of a space. Actually with the right bag, you do not really need a heater, and, i know because i live in North Eastern Minnesota, and, have camped in the late fall. I am planning a enclosed compartment for a bucket toilet as well, it will have the snap on toilet seat cover, that, will set me back less than twenty bucks. I am going to use my trusty old Coleman two burner camp stove, and, will use battery powered LED lights, so, no need for propane, or electricity. You can now buy small fans that will run almost 36 hours on a charge, i will use that for some air conditioning. Your build is nice, but, too minimal for me, i want to use mine to take a 6000mi four week trip next year.
That’s awesome! Sounds like you have it all figured out. I like to keep things very simple and I’m always around a town or store, so everything is usually pretty close. Your ideas are great though, I’m excited for your build. Good luck!
Thank you for all the kind words & comments!! Yeah, I do things that are simple, easy to follow, and cheap. If I was close, I’d definitely help ya out!
Hey Smithey, Nice build. My vote is for the storage cubes. Although I find having my kitchen gear accessible from the tailgate end is best for me, having inside access to the other cubes is a good idea. I live in CA and it doesn't rain much and I don't cook inside. Question...did you fasten the top piece of plywood to the pipe flanges with screws? I didn't see that in the video. Also a note of caution. I have a 2018 Leer truck cap and it does have small leaks, most people I know with caps have them. I have a spray in bed liner and I can see them. You have carpet and it will most likely absorb the moisture and you may not see them. You don't want mold. Great video.
Thank you, I appreciate that! That Cali life and weather… Love them! I lived there a few years myself. Yes, the flanges were screwed to the top. Some of it was tough to film, light is my biggest problem, especially at night. The video just isn’t editable. My cap was brand new and I didn’t have many issues with it. I no longer have the top and/or truck. That’s Good advice for the next person though, thank you!
That’s a nice camper shell bro. Only thing I wish I got for my shell is power locks, so I could lock and unlock everything with the key fob. Nice build. Super clean.
Thank you, I appreciate it. I felt exactly the same way with my last shell on one of my older trucks, that’s why I got it exactly how I wanted it this time.
I’m living on the road full-time in my cargo trailer and truck soon just to be in the truck I like the cubes better plus if it’s raining outside you can still access your stuff without getting wet think it gives you more room be bless nice build
Go with the storage containers. If you spend a decent amount of time in the camper it’s easier and more convenient to access what you need from within rather than having to get out and open the tailgate. At least that’s what my experience has been.
I have a 2014 F150 with a short bed and an ARE camper shell that leaks. I’ve been trying to make my ol auto turn it into a camper for full time use as well. It’s been a struggle but you make it look easy! Love your plans.
I just saw you I'm new to your channel finish making the bed and putting the carpeting and I got to tell you I had to stop right there because of the great job you did and had to subscribe I don't care what anybody else says you do this by yourself with your own ideas and your own design it's perfect just the way you want it don't change a thing kid you're doing just fine
very cool idea - frame of the bed is not heavy, but the drawer gives it more stability. On the other hand, the 5 drawers would be a lot more convenient for quick access. Your cabinets definitely rock!
Nice build. I wish I had the 6.5’ bed. Mine is the 5.6’ bed. Got my new topper on this past week. I wanted the A.R.E but opted for a Jason pace plus with the windoor option and rails. Saved about $1000 going with the Jason. Will see how it holds up and performs.
Wow, never heard of Jason. I really hope it holds up for you, that’s a steal with savings! Tops get really expensive REALLY fast. Good luck and congrats!
Thank you! Yeah, I couldn’t decide. I sold my truck and bought a 4runner. I just made a pull out AND inside storage. I haven’t put the new setup in a video yet, has some more work.
I think this is my favorite build I’ve seen. Simple but functional. And props for doing this while being in the Army. I imagine you have a storage unit for Ta-50 and I guess just use the facilities at the gym?
Thanks! I appreciate that. Yeah, depending on where I was I used family or a storage locker. Most bases had gyms I used for bathrooms and, well, the gym. Haha. If I was away or needed it, I had a gym membership at planet fitness.
Great job 👍. I think the cubes are better. If you are camping and it's raining outside, you can't pull out the slide out drawer because of the rain. With the cubes you can stay inside and access your gear and stay dry. They're lighter than the wooden drawer too. It's a nice job that you've done.
I love your ideas Smithey. I’m starting the interior of my ol 2006 F150 soon. Pretty much same idea I have planed. You could probably get a lawn chair in there. I’m going solar and battery also. But yes, love your truck interior
Thank you so much for that! I’m so excited for your journey you are about to embark on. Yes, a lawn chair will fit! I had a folding “fat boy” chair from Walmart in there and it fit perfect (extra wide folding chair). If you have any questions I can help with just let me know. Have fun and good luck!
I like the set up, what if you put the attach the baskets to a piece of plywood the could pull out? You would have the best of both slide from the outside and access from the inside.
Great job on the camper build. Looks great! Going with the storage cubes, could you still build a pull out tray behind them for a camp stove? Might give you a bit more flexibility?
Great job, well done. To me storage cubes are the way to go. Also I like everything to be accessible from inside cause I hate to open a drawer from outside when its cold or raining. Cheers.
I have a 3” memory-foam every time I sleep on it. My butt stinks in, my back arches, and I end up with a back ack. Then when I sleep on my side, my hip sinks, my ribs are arched, my shoulder sinks, and it really hurts. By the time the weekend come I’m soooo tired, then when I go home and sleep on my bed I’m knocked OUT. Sleeping deep on my mattress is what im aiming for. That what I asked about your mattress.
I absolutely love it! It opens the tailgate slower and it makes it lighter putting it back up. Unfortunately it doesn’t open it from the inside, that would be great! I highly recommend! The link for the assist is in the description and will bring you right to it so you can check it out.
Looks great! Far from ugly! Super cool build :-) I have a 2003 Avalanche and was thinking about doing the same thing, so thanks for sharing. Might have some questions soon.
Thank you! I appreciate that. I actually looked around for an avalanche because I wanted the pass through. If you have questions, Ask away! I’m here to help where I can.
I wanted to full-time it in a pickup truck with a camper shell like you have, but I'm not too good of a minimalist and I have way too much junk to fit in the back of a pickup, so I went with a van. Anyway I did consider a pickup like yours for a long time. I would have gone with the camper shell that is a little taller, but I'm 6'4 and I would need that if I wanted to sit up on the bed without hitting my head. Can you sit up with your shell?
I cannot sit up in the truck. I sit on the floor when I change and when I just hang out in there. I’m 6’2 so I understand the struggle! I owned a van, a truck and a few different SUVS when I lived in CA. I felt the most comfortable in an SUV. Yes the space is limited, but I live minimal. I actually moved into a 4runner recently. The van was just too much space. I may try a mini van.
Yeah, no problem! It’s just some galvanized piping and flanges I got from Lowes. They have all different sizes, thicknesses, etc. I think they only sell the raw stainless steel color and a blackish color, but don’t quote me on that. I have an example of some I found on Amazon in the description of the video, it’s like a shelf or something but gives people an idea of what I used because when I posted that video, Amazon didn’t have what Lowes had. Hope this helps! Appreciate the kind words!
Thanks! Yes! I was gonna put a removable back window in my truck, but I bought a 4runner instead. I bought the removable window and was waiting on shipping, but found an amazing deal on my current 4runner. The back window in the 4runner rolls down.
Love this build. I'm doing a 6 week road trip from Michigan to Alaska and back in 2022. I have been researching easy bed builds and this one is perfect! I can't wait to look at your videos. I also love the step in the back too!
@@smitheys It's going to be awesome for sure. I have to do some modifications to my truck. 2016 Dodge Ram 4x4 reg cab short bed. I'm looking into a solar system, a DIY water heating tub for the roof, leveling kit for the front end, heavy duty tires, spare parts, the list goes on. I'm planning on driving the McCarthy and Denali highways. So preparation will be necessity. I'll be 59 when I go and doing it solo as a woman.
That’s outstanding! I’m extremely jealous now! You have a lot of work ahead, so I’m not jealous there. Haha. Your rig is going to be ready for anything when you’re done. If you have any questions I can help with let me know and Keep me updated!
Simple and well made, one comment if I may, that long space under the bed seems to be not to usable except for long items, I would have considered the bed base to be on opening hinges to gain access to that back space. Otherwise you've done a very fine fine job, I wish you good luck on your safaries. Cheers
Thank you! I appreciate that. I may have did that before I got rid of my truck, great advice though! I now live in my 4Runner for the time being. Again, thank you.
Good job. Very clean. Nice job on the carpeting and those bed legs! You might look in to a cover for your heater so you don't poison the pad with dust.
Bro! I am currently looking Ideas to make a set up on my camper! This is awesome for someone says he doesn’t have experience. I hope I can do the same.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I tried but like I I said I’m no professional. I do what I need at the time and it doesn’t always look pretty. I’m sure you will do great though! I hope I gave you some ideas!!
Maybe you can cut out a piece on outside of truck to vent out the propane tank and be able to remove/fill/replace tank without carrying the tank threw the truck interior and invest in a CO-2 detector
cubes. but you can shave a lot of weight out all full thickness ply with a forstner bit - draw a grid wherever a part isn't structurally bearing a lot of weight and nicely take out 1/2 the depth... adds up quickly...
Thank you! I didn’t really anchor them because I made them basically flush fitted. I pushed the cabinet down into the carpet and slide it in. The carpet gave enough force into the side rails of the truck. Never moved or made any noise.
i realize it'sbeen over ayear since you made the video. excellent vid by the by. i think the 5 drawer system would be better. i whould like to know where you got that little template tool that you used. to scribe your templates. like your vids. thanks again.
Thank you so much David! I appreciate that. The tool I used as a scribe I made myself. It’s a level, a thin paint brush, and a sharpe. The paint brush handle is used as a guide. The level keeps it, well, level. And the sharpe is used to mark the template. There’s also a device called a saker. It’s an orange tool used for making templates. Honestly it takes longer but it works. Hope this helps!
Just the build was 2 sheets of plywood (at the time of the build, $34 a piece). The tubing was about $50, piano hinge was $7, $8 for each storage cube, and $12 for a box of wood screws. All-in-all about $200, that’s probably high. If you’re referring to drill as in the guard/reserves, that’s a great idea! (We call our weekend training drills or battle Assemblies in the Army). Hope this helps!
I have been waiting for a window from Breezer. They have been booked solid and turn around times of like 8 weeks. The Breezer window is removable, making it a complete passthrough.
Hey man nice job! How do you like the wave 3? Can you keep it on low or does it use up too much propane? I like your idea to keep it inside that side of the cabinet. I'm thinking if i mounted mine either center in front of or above the wheel well with a cover to take off that reveals it and I can use the cover for a little shelf in the front by my bed. How does it do keeping the back moist free?
Thank you, I appreciate it! The wave 3 is pretty good machine. Depending on how cold it gets near you, will determine if you can leave it on low. I was in 23 degrees F and it was on low. I run it 6 hours every night on low. Tank lasts a month. It’s propane, so there will be moisture. I have the wave 3 in my description of you wanna check it out.
Hahaha, yeah it takes some effort but I haven’t fell yet… I wouldn’t put it past me to fall eventually. I usually close the tailgate before I get in. Really tricky otherwise. Thanks for watching!
HI, can you explain better how the speed square, paintbrush and marker work? How do you attach the paintbrush (and what does it actually do)? It looks like a great idea for following the curves and cutouts, but I just don't get it.
Yes, Rebecca I can try to explain it better. (Sorry for the late reply). So this contraption is just for helping you trace unique designs and make a design out of wood, you are correct. I’m sure there is something out there that can do it better, but this has been 1000% better than anything I’ve found. So the combination square is just the perfect design to line everything up and also has a level in it. The thin paint brush is secured with painters tape and is the point to trace. The magic marker just transcribes the trace onto some cardboard on the bottom. I use cardboard because you can mess up and its a lot cheaper with cardboard then with wood each time. I can make a video if that didn’t make sense. Lol. Sometimes things are hard to explain without showing what you’re talking about. Haha. Hope this helps
That’s amazing! It’s definitely an experience. I’d suggest everyone try it, I haven’t been happier. Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll help where I can!

Thank you! Glad you liked it.
What a great idea and nice work!! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Nice job.
I would of liked to see a drawer to some extent.
For when you're out and about
Quick Access.
Thank you!
Yeah, I couldn’t decide. I sold my truck and bought a 4runner. I just made a pull out AND inside storage. I haven’t put the new setup in a video yet, has some more work.
@@smitheys
Right on
I'm still driving my f150.
I had a similar set up.
Cheers
Drive safe
From the great white North !
Looking forward to see the full build-out and the mythical timing how do you stay cool and how do you stay warm
I’ve seen lots of videos and this one is the best setup. Dude you killed it. Awesome job 👍
Thanks a million! Means a lot.
Thank you so much Smithey. Can’t wait to start my adventure. Neither can my old F150 BettyBoop. The burgundy bomb shell. Lol. Ttys. Thank you
Storage cubes look much cleaner plus easier access when tailgate closed.
I like the five drawers because you can open them from the inside and it’s easier to organize in separate compartments.
I totally agree, thank you!!
I love this and am starting with my F150, I love the cube storage method, so much more storage space
Thanks! You definitely should! It’s a great way to get some free camping.
I like the set up, what if you put the attach the baskets to a piece of plywood the could pull out? You would have the best of both slide from the outside and access from the inside.
That’s definitely a different idea! Thanks for the idea.
Great job on the camper build. Looks great! Going with the storage cubes, could you still build a pull out tray behind them for a camp stove? Might give you a bit more flexibility?
I love that idea! Thank you.
If I still had the truck, I would definitely do that or incorporate that in somehow.
The tailgate assist: tell me how well that works? Is that so you can shut the tailgate from the inside? Is it helpful and worth the money you spent?
I really love your setup!! Very clean! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🍻🍻🍻
Thank you!
Luv your windoors! Awesome! Great bed design too! Simple to build! Excellent! You rock man!
I really appreciate that, thank you!
Can i get more info on what the legs are ? Love this, simple efficient, light weight. Good job
The piano hinged board could have a couple of fold down legs and could be a table while sitting on the bed.
Great idea!
I like that the back window can come out in case of an emergency fast exsape way to the front of the truck to drive away.
Thanks! Yes! I was gonna put a removable back window in my truck, but I bought a 4runner instead. I bought the removable window and was waiting on shipping, but found an amazing deal on my current 4runner. The back window in the 4runner rolls down.
Love it! Very simple and creative thanks bro I'm in the middle of my build
Heck yes!! Glad I could help and good luck with your build! Just holler if you need anything.
Definitely Cubes bro,..looks real tight, you done yourself proud!
Thank you. I appreciate that and agree!
Whoever your boss is, is VERY lucky!
Haha, I appreciate that.
Love this soooo much
Best design I have seen
I'm buying my drawers tomorrow Thank you 🙌🏼🇨🇦🙌🏼
Heck yes! Good luck to ya and thank you!
Like the camper shell a lot, windows are cool. Cubes are good, easy to use. The “nite stand” good for power source, like hackers.
Thank you! I appreciate that. I’ve never heard of hackers, I’ll look into that. Thanks for the advice.
Very nice setup! Should make for some real good camping time
Thanks Greg! It definitely made for some fantastic camping!
Love this build. I'm doing a 6 week road trip from Michigan to Alaska and back in 2022. I have been researching easy bed builds and this one is perfect! I can't wait to look at your videos. I also love the step in the back too!
Thank you! I’m glad you like it.
I can’t believe you’re doing that road trip! I would love to make that trek! Lucky. Be safe and have fun!
@@smitheys I appreciate that. I'll probably start a blog or at least instagram just for me a diary.
I cannot believe your doing that trip either. Wow, but then again, us woman can do anything we put our mind to. Good luck
Start making extras again at the end of ur videos. Those were funny and give ur video some✨spice✨
I thought about bringing it back. I may do it. Thanks for the idea, I forgot about it actually.
I really appreciate it! I actually have a cover, I just forgot to put it on. Thank you for looking out.
I have a CO-2 detector, it just wasn’t in the video. I will definitely vent it outside now.
can you make an video on how you make the storage system?
Love the build! Cubes definitely.
Thank you! Means a lot.
Agree, cubes!
Can you show me a picture of that chair “ big boy “ from Walmart you have. No rush. Thanks Buddy
Sorry, I no longer have the truck. I have recently switched over to living in my 4Runner. I have a few videos showing that setup.
Both set ups, look nice....Can't go wrong with either.....
Thank you!
Creative and functional! Excellent content.
Thank you! I’m really glad you liked it.
The prettiest work of art! ✨
Wow, thanks! Wasn’t expecting such high compliments.
you did a great job man best ive seen out of a lot
I really appreciate that sir! Glad you liked it, there are some nice ones out there.
If you put locking type hinge on the door you lift up, then you would have a table/ desk.
Nice! Thanks for that.
Add a small solar panel to
Stay tuned! It’s coming.
Thanks
Buddy you killed it ! Good job!
Thank you! I really appreciate it.
For your cabinet I would use gas style struts
Thank you for the suggestion! Much appreciated
One of the nicer looking setups ive seen by farrrrr
Thank you! I appreciate it.
nice work looks great,,,seems like the plastic bin drawers are way better...
Thank you so much!
cubes. but you can shave a lot of weight out all full thickness ply with a forstner bit - draw a grid wherever a part isn't structurally bearing a lot of weight and nicely take out 1/2 the depth... adds up quickly...
I appreciate that! I would have done that, but I sold the truck. I will take it under advisement for my 4Runner, i filmed a new tour. Check it out!
simplicity at its best love it
Absolutely! That’s how i roll! Ha
Great ideas there Brother. How did you anchor the storage cabinet to the truck bed walls?
Thank you! I didn’t really anchor them because I made them basically flush fitted. I pushed the cabinet down into the carpet and slide it in. The carpet gave enough force into the side rails of the truck. Never moved or made any noise.
Storage cubes for sure!
Thank you! I agree.
i realize it'sbeen over ayear since you made the video. excellent vid by the by.
i think the 5 drawer system would be better. i whould like to know where you got that little template tool that you used. to scribe your templates. like your vids. thanks again.
How much did you spend on the build? This things awesome. Planning on doing something like this for drill periods
@@smitheys thanks! This is the cheapest and most functional build I’ve seen so far! Yeah reserves
I wish my bed was a little longer. 5'6" bed and I'm 5'9". Just scored a nice top for $250 so I at least have something to play with.
Nice find!
Yeah, I searched for a 6 1/2 ft bed in a truck. I’ve seen people sleep diagonal in 5 1/2.
Why don't you make a connection with the front cab to have access from the back.
Those storage cubes open when the tailgate is up
Yes they’ll open inwards. Ha, is that a word? Looks funny.
How do you close up the tailgate and the topper when you are inside the bed? I can see me falling out on my face . LOL
Hahaha, yeah it takes some effort but I haven’t fell yet… I wouldn’t put it past me to fall eventually. I usually close the tailgate before I get in. Really tricky otherwise. Thanks for watching!
Love the cubes. Great job
@@smitheys Thanks for your reply, Smithey. I watched that part of your video many times slowed down and with your explanation I get it now. 😊
Nice setup I like the storage cubes
I appreciate you!
Nice, I’m about to start building my truck
Thank you!!!
Yes! You are going to have fun. Let me know if you have any questions I can help you with. Have fun!!
I have a 89 F-150 with 300 inline 6... I am thinking about becoming a nomad.
That’s amazing! It’s definitely an experience. I’d suggest everyone try it, I haven’t been happier. Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll help where I can!
Use the cubes... don't have to drop the tailgate to access them
I thought it would be a smarter option, thank you!
I'd how with the storage cubes so they are accessible from inside in bad weather
Yes! Someone who agrees with me. Most people say pull out. Thank you!
Nice clean classy build, clean lines. Very nice.
Thank you! I really appreciate it
I like your set up mate. Most of the beds I see have some kind of holes or slats, have you had any issues with condensation below the mattress?
Aye! Thank you kindly. I didn’t have any issues while I had that set up and I did put it through it’s paces.
Cubes. Nice work.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
That's awesome. Great job.
any thought of a pop top on the shell ?
