I just helped my grandpa with his build. He has a 1985-1989 Chevy and we have two beds which are 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. Then we have a table with a mini stove a sink and food. We have a tv and some lights that are battery powered. Overall it’s really nice and I hope you finished your build.

  • @fly1327

    And the best parts:
    1) When you want to drive for an errand or day trip, minimal hassle, unlike a rooftop tent
    2) If you arrive after dark, you're already set up
    3) Most of your gear stays locked in the truck, even for short trips
    4) You're not on the ground
    5) Hard shell beats fabric/poles in the wind and rain
    Great work!

just made this exact setup after watching this for my 2015 Ram 1500 with the 6'4 Bed, If any of you watching this have a 2009-2019 Ram with a 6'4 bed, these are the measurements for the wood you need.
    - For the Two Wheel well pieces that will be two 2x4's 70 1/2 inch
    - For the horizontal bed slots that will be 5 1x6's 66 inch
    - For the 4 towers on all corners that will be four 2x4's 10 inch tall
    - For the two pieces of plywood that go over the slots for the bedframe that will be two sections each one cut 33 inches wide by 70 1/2 inches long
    - Reflectix is found in insulation at Home depot, while your having the wood cut Grab two Rolls and some reflectix aluminum tape, that will be enough to cover all the ply wood and some extra left over.
    - For the mattress I got a full size queen mattress that measured 60x80 and it fits nice and tight and i got to slam the tailgate shut to smush it in but I have the added convenience of a full size mattress, if you dont want to go this route just grab some foam at home depot or a 4 inch queen mattress topper.
follow this and everything will fit perfect :)

This is the most versatile and simplest I've seen on TH-cam. This makes it worthwhile for me. I am pondering now some adjustments I can make to have this work for me but thank you very much. Is permanent build with heavy drawers don't make sense this is what I need it's lighter weight Justice sturdy over and useful. Perhaps even more so because there isn't a giant structure to move in out of the truck. There's only some lightweight pieces. Thank you.

  • @DrizzyDMG
    @DrizzyDMG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Been looking at a ton of truck camping set ups, this is easily the cheapest/highest quality build that isn’t permanent. I use my truck for all sorts of stuff and can’t have stuff in the back all the time. Love how it’s just dropping in a few pre-made pieces and and a few screws and sliding a few things in and your freaking camping. Thanks for the video I’ll definitely be doing this to my truck after I get a camper shell.

I've been looking to do the same thing and your setup was the easiest. Kudos for the Reflectix idea. I'm critical of the Yeti coolers tho. NOTHING justifies the price, they are for the well heeled Glampers who are now pushing the poor guy out of camp sites all over America. The price is outrageous. They only last 1 day longer than your 5day Coleman which with proper care should last decades. And two are affordable, one for drinks that open frequently and one for food that gets opened at mealtime. Then you will have money leftover to pay admission fees for campsites and tourist attractions along the way. THX for the video.

Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been looking at builds for about a month now and you had my same truck and cap set up. I ended up using 6 - 2x4s instead of the 5 - 1x6s. The only other real differences I had was that I have a spray in liner and not a plastic so some of the curvatures are different. I’m debating on doing a headliner on my cap but at this point I don’t think it’s necessary. But anyways thank you so much for your wonderful videos!
I also wanted to add that I ended up building this with only a Skilsaw and some deck screws and my entire Home Depot bill came out to $105. Way cheaper than buying a small travel camper and I can travel stealth still!

Nice set up. We got rid of the cooler in lieu of the new 12 volt refrigerators that are priced so competitively now. Our 50 qt compressor freon refrigerator was $276 on eBay. It fits in the back seat of the truck and connected to a separate deep cycle battery with solar controller and 100 watt panel on top so I don't drain the main battery. Uses only 50 watts of power when it cycles on. Its been a game changer for us as we don't need ice anymore. Imagine no melted water, soggy food. It goes below freezing so we can bring nicer things like frozen shrimp , fish and yes even ice cream.

Seems like making a dado in the bottom-side of the slats, would be a great alternative to having to screw and unscrew those two boards. A fairly tight fitting dado is plenty sturdy enough, plus it avoids the need of using tools/hardware to be screwing/unscrewing into narrow wood, which will be prone to splitting as time goes on, and running out of new wood to screw into, or slowly enlarging existing holes. I do like how quick and easy it looks to install/uninstall. Thanks for sharing. Aloha

I had a similar camper unit back in the 80's but it was one piece insert so it was heavy and hard to store.

Lol, its good for extra curricular activities. I am glad you mentioned that. I bet you could read all night long on this bed. You could read real hard. Looks like you could even read two books at the same time. It's that sturdy.

Nice. I’m going fly fishing next weekend (9/3/22) and am tired of just throwing a sleeping bag and mat in the back of my GMC Sonoma 4x4 truck bed with a lined shell. I have a ton of scrap and am going to do a buildout today. Just looking for a few simple ideas. I like this one and one other I saw yesterday which was a little different.

Thank you so much.My research stops here and going with this super easy and brilliant set up for my pajero. The interior is pretty much the same so it's gonna be straight forward. I usually bring my kids and bicycles along so i hv to remove the wheels because of height clearance is reduced. Overall this saves a lot of unnecessary and costly modifications.

Thanks a lot! Yes it is the 100xq with roof racks. I wouldnt recommend it tho. Back door leaks which has caused the latches the sieze up and not work correctly. And for the price you pay for it, it is unacceptable. It looks good for a truck cap but that's about it.

Instead of having to screw the board to the middle support, couldn't you use a wooden or metal pin/peg/dowel to drop into pre drilled hole? Just a thought

    • @BradyHommel

      That is a great idea!

    • @kryzpyalls

@@BradyHommel for the middle support in my set up I used plywood. This allowed me to custom fit the center support with proud ends that are high enough to hug the front and back cross boards. I then screwed some jibs on these cross boards to make a pseudo mortise and tenon joint. No screws are needed to set up and tare down

How easy or difficult would it be to make a pass through from the camper into the cab? I'd love to be able to go full time with a truck rather than an RV or trailer but I have to have access to the drivers seat from the interior. How would you pull that off? Would you make a video of it maybe?

    • @tylerleigh3264
