I became familiar with this recipe from a friend in school. She was a "missionary kid". It was a goodie that was big in the mission field. I just loved it when she shared it with our home economics class. I don't put nuts on mine when I make it for us as we have nut allergies in the family but that certainly does sound good. My daughter walked in at the middle of the video and said "Momma she's making cracker candy... Would you please????" So I reckon I'm making it for us soon. 😂
@@ricktaylor3748 my family always made it with Graham crackers. My Mama would always put leftover cake icing between Graham crackers- that was my treat as a little one.
This is a holiday must have in our house. We always called it Christmas Crack. My 17 yo daughter made a batch this week and put sprinkles on top and her older brothers ate the whole pan already. We’ve made variations over the years - club crackers, graham crackers with mini marshmallows on top., sometimes sprinkles, sometimes nuts. Always a hit!
We call it Christmas Crack also. Because it is very addictive. I had never heard of it until a few years ago my niece’s girlfriend brought it over. Real easy and fun candy to make with simple ingredients.
For those on a sodium restricted diet, I have had this made with unsalted crackers. It was good too. Just a thought that might help some of your viewers enjoys these.
My mother passed a few years ago and your videos remind me so much of her, that it both makes me want to cry but more so makes me smile as I remember my childhood. Thank you for what you do.
That's a large part of why I watch these as well, only for my great-grandmother, who we lost last year. She spoke with a lot of the same speechways and accent, and always had something in the oven. I'm currently on the quest (which I suspect will be lifelong) of learning how to make pie from scratch, since she was famous for them and never shared any exact recipes except to say "put a little of this, and as much of that as feels right". So far I've only gotten pecan pie right, but considering I'm 21, I think it's a good start. I am so sorry you lost your mother, I'm glad these videos can give us comfort and remind us of loved ones. ♥
I’ve made this for years as well. I have made some changes tho. I use Club crackers instead of saltines. It gives it a more buttery flavor. I have also used cinnamon grahams and that is amazing! I also like to top mine with Health Bar chips or Butterfinger chips. My family can’t stop eating it! 😊

This was a winter thing with my grandparents....( Mom's side)...she used walnuts, and sometimes little marshmallows. Haven't eaten any of it since the '70s...my grandmother would make a metric boatload of it, I would take it home and enjoy it. As I recall, it didn't keep too well, but it was good while it lasted. My grandparents went shopping someplace where you could get chocolate slabs the size of patio blocks, and these had clearly been broken off a even bigger piece. She put chocolate slivers on it......I had not thought of this in forever. Great video...

Tipper, I made a batch of this cracker candy tonight. I think I cooked my butter & sugar mixture a little too long as it was really thick when I spread it on the crackers, and it hardened very quickly. I only made half of the recipe, so I probably should have cooked the mixture for less than the regular three minutes. Regardless, I spread the melted chocolate chips over the top and then, instead of pecans, I put Heath toffee bits (they were on the baking isle with the chocolate chips) on top. It is so good!! My husband had never had this before, and he loves it!! 😄
I love that the close microphone made it sound like a crackling fire when you dropped the chips. I have also seen either Rae Drummond or Trisha Yearwood do an appetizer with club crackers, brown sugar, and bacon. There was a sweet version and a savory one. Easy and tasty. I tend to take fiddly recipes and just make them into a dip. We love things like jalapeno poppers, but they are fiddly. Chop it all up, bake, amazing! I was gonna make mini reuben sandwiches. Nope, chop it up, add cream cheese, into the slow cooker, even better! When in doubt, make it a dip or a tray bake, holiday time and clean up savers. Thanks for reminding me of this simple treat!
Apparently, this is popular here in Oklahoma, but I just discovered the recipe a couple of years ago. It’s good for a quick candy. My favorite is my mother’s homemade fudge. The old fashioned type without marshmallow cream. I made it with her every Christmas. I have tried making it on my own, but it’s never quite right. She didn’t even like to cook, but she loved making candy at Christmas time.
I love the old fashion fudge too, the one that was on the back of the Hershey Cocoa can, but it's the hardest to make and it's so dang finicky. I always go exactly by the recipe, sometimes it turns out sometimes it don't. I've been making candy for years and years and was always told never make fudge if its' raining or about to rain or it wont set up. LOL well I made that fudge late one evening when it was pouring rain out and that fudge turned out perfect. Never know though the next batch may end up as spoon fudge.

I’d forgotten about this wonderful recipe that my mother used to make back in the 70’s along with many of her friends. I’m going to make a batch for my own family, thank you !! ❤
I first saw this recipe in my local newspaper in the 90's. They had an Amish cook column and she would share her recipes and news about daily life. I love this candy. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Mama never made this. But I remember having it at family gatherings. So one of my aunts must have made it. I remember in the fall mama would let us help her make candy apples, caramel apples and popcorn balls. That was usually around Halloween. Then for Thanksgiving I remember she made pecan rolls. And yeast rolls and bread. She made these on all holidays and sometimes as a surprise. Then for Christmas we made divinity fudge. And we would make glass candy. I know it had Karo syrup, flavored oil, and food coloring. We called it glass candy because she would poor it out on a pan like you did the cracker candy. Then when it cooled and harden we would break it with spoons. Sometimes they would make a more fancy type folded like ribbons. And it had I guess confectioners sugar on it. We didn’t get a lot of that. Last but not least mama would always make a jam cake for Christmas. I sometimes buy one locally but it seems like most I’ve gotten are scorched. Not sure why. But it was a special cake and mama never scorched it. Thank you for bringing all of these memories back. I hope to continue some with our girls (granddaughters). Sure hope I can teach them a little if what mama knew.
Been making this for over 35 years, I use graham crackers segments and don't do chocolate. So yum. my daughter won a girl scout cookie contest once with them.
oh, your accent sounds like home. I moved to the east coast from the south a year ago and never hear those southern twangs anymore. always so nice to hear them. these are a staple where I'm from in Arkansas, as well!
My husband loves this candy. My favorite candy though has to be my Great Grandma Foust black walnut candy! Oh my goodness if you like black walnuts this recipe is an oldie and my mother made it for us every Christmas of my life. I haven’t made it since mom passed but plan on it this Christmas so me and my sisters can have a wonderful blessed memory.
Here is the recipe. It is not a creamy consistency like fudge but oh so delicious and the longer it sets the better the flavors meld together. My mom would make this about a week before Christmas and keep in a tin. Ingredients - 3 cups sugar, 1 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 tsp salt, 4 1/2 tablespoons butter, 2 tsp vanilla, 1 cup black walnuts. Add first 3 ingredients into a large sauce pan. Cook to hard boil stage 250-266 degrees or when strings like a hair when dripping from spoon. Once hard boil stage is reached, remove from heat and add last 3 ingredients, vanilla, butter and black walnuts…stir together well and put into a buttered dish. I usually double recipe and it makes a cookie sheet fill when doubled.
Tipper. Funny story: my daughter and I always made the saltines toffee too and one year I had no parchment paper and my cookie sheet was old.the toffee stuck terribly so we set it on the porch for a bit to cool because it was a cold night. When we went back not a drop was left. The baking sheet clean as a whistle. Scrapped clean by a racoon.
My grandma makes a bunch of simple homemade treats like this for the holidays! I think she makes one very similar to this! She also makes rocky road fudge and pralines, etc. We're living in the northwest in Oregon, she lives on her cow farm, so it's cool to see the similarities. I can see how these could taste like the Twix candy bars. Edit: I am SOOO making this tonight for my boyfriend and I !! It will be the perfect movie watching snack!
Hey from Georgia! Love your channel! The girls' too! Our daughter graduated from Young Harris so we've spent lots of time in your neck of the woods. We used to stay in Hayesville and our daughter and her roommates went to New Hope church there. Anyway... I used to make this every summer for our daughter to take to church youth camp. I'd make huge batches,1 for the boys bus, 1 for the girls. She used to tell us that every year it never made it to camp. They'd start munching on it before they got to the first interstate exit! I also made extra for the leaders...theirs didn't make it much longer. It's so delicious and very economical to make. As a part-time preschool teacher married to a paramedic money was often tight but I found ways to still treat my family and others. God always made a way...still does!
It was fun watching you make this. Our family isn't crazy about nuts so I always crush up a Skor or Heath candy bar and sprinkle it on top. Thanks for the video!
I had never heard of this until a few years ago when a lady I took care of made it. She gave me the recipe and I've been making it at Christmas time ever since. She passed away not long ago but I'll always remember her when I make this candy. I just finished making a batch, I put pecans on half and leave the other half plain. Thank you for sharing this Tipper, I am new to your channel but I enjoy it very much. I love your girls too.

Miss Tipper; I’m always a bit envious when you taste the fruit of your labors! I absolutely forgot about these. I’ve always love these, at all those pot lucks, someone always made cracker candies. When I moved up North, I forgot a lot of delicious Southern treats. I’m not doing much cooking these days, I think I can handle a couple of treats like the cracker candies and cheese straws this year! Thank you for your great recipes and allowing us to peek into your lives🫶🏼🎄⛄️🎅🏻🤶🏻
My mom made cracker candy ,except she would take cocoa and make syrup with it, add caramel candy melted with the cocoa. Spread over the crackers, bake for five minutes, then cool. After that she would spread thick cream or cool whip over the chocolate, layer that with coconut, then a layer of black walnuts over that, then she would drop molasses to hold the nuts down. After refrigerating for an hour, she would cut them into somewhat squares and man they were delicious ,as I'm sure yours are . Thanks for the memories, you're the best.
Hi Tipper I too make this candy My nephew and nieces love it and I still make it every Holiday. We started calling ours River Rat Trash We lived on a River here in Texas for 27 years, And that name stuck . I have tried many variations of this recipe. Easy and everyone likes it , Thanks for sharing this with everyone .
My aunt would make this at Christmas. She passed before we could get the recipe. Thank you so much for this. I’m so happy we can make this and celebrate her memory.
I make this every year for Christmas! It’s my daughter’s favourite. She often asks me to make it during the year but I refuse. It’s a Christmas tradition and it shall remain a special once a year treat!
I had never heard of this until a few years ago. My niece’s girlfriend brought it over. If you don’t have the chocolate or nuts it is good without them. That’s how she made it. So if you have very little money you can make a candy for Christmas. The kids can help also. They can lay the crackers and spread the butter sugar mixture. We call it Christmas Crack. Very addictive.
Oh my mind is racing at the combinations I could do. I’m going to make this as one of my treat gifts for neighbors. White choc/peppermint, choc chips/coconut/nuts and just as you have it. It looks easy and delish!

What wonderful memories you have 😀
Been making this for over 35 years, I use graham crackers segments and don't do chocolate. So yum. my daughter won a girl scout cookie contest once with them.
A classic…! We sometimes put crushed peppermint candies on top and call it Christmas crack ! 😂
Edit: We sometimes use Ritz crackers as the base.
Sounds great!
Oooh Ritz would be so good!
have you ever made ritz crackers with peanut butter on one, put another on top and dipped the whole thing in chocolate?
@@sharonlatour6230 my mother-in-law used ta do that. They are so good. Thank you sharing.
Yummmmm!
My mom used to make this back in the 1960s. She'd also bake a sheet of cookie dough or short bread and pour the topping on it.
Oh wow this one to me I'm gonna ask my mamaw if she has heard/made this Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
oh, your accent sounds like home.
That sounds wonderful-I love black walnuts 😀
I love black walnuts, would you share the recipe?
Love black walnuts. Where do you live I'll come by and help you eat it to keep you from gaining weight or foundering.
@@brendaschenck859 hi Brenda I added the recipe to this thread.
😀
Love these! Such a fun great recipe. Thank you for sharing! My mouth is watering & I think I’m going to have to make some right up. ♥️😌
Hope you enjoy 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia I’m going to buy your cookbook as a gift to my whole family- including myself. 😉🎄
@@oliveoil2x You are so kind! Thank you 😀
I remember in the 80's, a friend had this candy. So rich, easy, and yummy!
This looks alot like English toffee, with the addition of crackers. I've never had either, but it looks like an easy holiday treat!
It is easy to make 😀
Could you make extra candy, do the chocolate and nuts but not put it on the crackers? I imagine it would be similar to English Toffee!
I’m 80 and rarely cook this kind of thing anymore, but I may try it! Thanks from Texas!
Girl yes! I've made these before and they are out of this world delicious. Be prepared to be addicted Lol!
😀 They are good
She'll have to start a eaters anonymous after the holidays.
And some kind of work club.
I gained 5# just watching.
We do this but use graham crackers instead. Sooo good and always a hit at any party!
I need to try that 😀
I Made Them yesterday, and Believe me they are such a HIT with white chocolate bits Christmas Sugars Made With LOVE
Wonderful!
The thing that always goes fast with my hubby's family is peanut butter buckeyes. Bring a full container, take home an empty one.
I love them too 😀
Toasted pecans just taste so good. We love this candy
This looks so good. I wonder if maybe you have ever heard of a certain dish my grandmother & aunt used to make? We are from WV and my favorite thing my mammaw made was white sweet potatoes with hamburger gravy. Have you ever heard of it? People think I've lost it lol
I haven't heard of it but I love white sweet potatoes 😀
Hamburger gravy I make myself. Do you put the sweet potatoes in the gravy or are they on the side?
I serve mine with tatters and biscuits.
I make it, it's delicious
Kathy, I make that a lot. It's one of our favorites.
@@lianawelch5852 I was trying to remember why they did. Just boil the sweet potatoes? I loved it!
I’m new to your channel and I just have been so blessed by you and your girls. I love how the light of Christ radiates out of you all and I also found the girls channel. Thank you for not being like the “world” but being a unique light of love, joy and hope for the world. Abundant blessings and God bless you and your family from South Carolina
Thank you so much!
My mom always made peanut butter balls and I've yet to taste any that are good as hers. It'll be our second Christmas without her. ❤️
I'm sorry you lost her.
God bless you. Lost mine 2 weeks ago and I know I can't make that cranberry cream cheese salad like she did! We love you moms!
@@montanaliving4769 I'm sorry to hear that. Mom's always have that special touch when it comes to our favorite recipes.
You and I are in the same boat. My mom also made peanut butter balls and this will be my 2nd Thanksgiving and Christmas without her. 😔💙
@@rebeccagirson1087 I'm sorry to hear that. It makes the holidays feel so different and not as warm. I hope you find some comfort during these two months.
Nothing better than salt and chocolate. It brought back memories long gone by. TY for sharing
My parents grew up in Italy. Sicilians have a similar treat they make with cookies and chocolate pudding layered. An inexpensive Christmas treat we still have till this day.
Tipper..you are one in a million...full stop.but.. ..so awesome.
Hello from Chino CA. A neighbor made this for gifts back in 1986. I loved it !! I'm so happy I ran across your video!! Making a double today!!
Wonderful!
I just made this...I used milk chocolate...it's one of the best candy I have ever eaten!...easy, fun and gonna take it to work and tell the gang I bought it from a local shop!....thanks for sharing this will be a new treat for the holidays
Wonderful!
Christmas 2023 was the first time I made this.......hard to stop sneakin' a taste before it's packaged up to give. Thank you; really enjoyed your video.
Sounds so good 😀
Hi Tipper
I too make this candy
My nephew and nieces love it and I still make it every Holiday.
We started calling ours River Rat Trash
We lived on a River here in Texas for 27 years,
And that name stuck .
I have tried many variations of this recipe.
Easy and everyone likes it ,
Thanks for sharing this with everyone .
Love that 😀
My aunt would make this at Christmas. She passed before we could get the recipe. Thank you so much for this. I’m so happy we can make this and celebrate her memory.
I never know what you are going to give us, you cooking skills are really good.
Oh my!! Had never heard of this before. So simple, yet looks simply delicious!!
A lady at work once brought in crackers with butter and garlic. They were great
I've made it with pecans, one batch I just sprinkled sea salt on top and one I put coconut on...all were delish!!!
I make this every year for Christmas! It’s my daughter’s favourite. She often asks me to make it during the year but I refuse. It’s a Christmas tradition and it shall remain a special once a year treat!
This has become one of my FAMILY'S favorite THEY are so GOOD 😋
Oh yummy. I needed this recipe for my neighbor. She home schools her two and loves cooking projects. This will be fin for kids to help make. Loved it.
Wonderful 😀
We have the same pots. I got mine back in 78. Still work wonderfully
I bet that recipe would be very good with white chocolate with crushed peppermint candy on top instead of the nuts. Yummmmy!!!
I used graham crackers and chocolate with mini marshmallows and torched them. That was a great experiment!
I had this years ago at a Christmas party. It is delicious and addictive.
My mom taught me this recipe and I make this every year at Christmas. I make a batch with crushed peppermint and one with mini red and green M&Ms!
I made this for the first time and I used Ritz because I didn't have saltines and it was amazing my children and coworkers loved it
I had never heard of this until a few years ago.
Thank you for posting this, my sisters and I made this when we were kids!
Oh my mind is racing at the combinations I could do. I’m going to make this as one of my treat gifts for neighbors. White choc/peppermint, choc chips/coconut/nuts and just as you have it. It looks easy and delish!
I learned this recipe from an old church cookbook a friend gave me, it's called CRACK... I make it every year for the holidays, We love it.
Sounds great. We are having Christmas dinner this weekend with our Granddaughters and their families. This should go over well with our 5 GREAT-Grandchildren.
My grandmother made this at Christmas time an she called it Christmas Crack candy she made different ways! Oh it was so good 👍 God Bless Tipper & Family
Thanks for this recipe Tipper! I have seen other TH-cam videos where this candy is made but yours turned out perfect! But I did notice that your chocolate spreads great bc you slipped yours back in the oven a few seconds. But even when you broke yours into pieces, that worked out good too. We have never had this. Well I’ve never made it. I think I have eaten it somewhere but can’t remember where. It’s so simple yet looks so good. Thanks and God bless.
Oh my goodness, when you said Skor candy bar it brought back memories...
😀
This stuff is unbelievable. Never made it..but I'll eat it 😋
Fixing food for my family, knowing they enjoy it and knowing that I do it well, makes me feel very good. Idk how to explain it but if you know, you know. Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄
So easy and good. I make it with graham crackers or regular Ritz if you like salty and sweet. Delicious!!
Thanks for the memories.
I love her !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yummy! I can see dropping some dried fruit pieces on top too as a festive touch. 🍒☃️🎄
this is a classic. my family never made them, we were more of cobbler and cake and pie people, we only roasted nuts as 'candy'. but i have had this cracker candy tons of times from other people
Salutations du Canada! I'm really glad I found your channel. Nothing fancy or high-tech, just real cooking straight from the heart. I especially love your accent. I admit it took me a couple of replays to realize you were saying "boil" and "foil". I was hearing "bowl" and "foal", lol! Merci beaucoup. À la prochaine! (Thanks very much. See you again!)
So glad you enjoy our videos!
Never heard of this, but it is something I think I would like. Sweet and salty ~ perfect! Thank you!
