This is the exact recipe how my 96 year old Aunt ( R.I.P.) used to to make. The only difference was she put nuts on the top. I have to tell you, she never timed her cooking process. I asked her how long do you cook it. She said it was done when you see the first puff of smoke, then immediately take it off the burner. This never fails. Every time I make it I think of her and miss her.❤
Another surefire gauge for toffee doneness is an ordinary brown paper grocery bag. Keep it nearby - but not too near the heat - and when the candy has cooked to the point that it’s the same color as the bag, it’s done and ready to pour out. Works every time!
@tracyosborne6963: Brown sugar tends to have MORE moisture in it due to the molasses! Perhaps, that may be one of the reasons why the TOFFEE never becomes CRUNCHY; however, when baking cookies and you DESIRE moisture, i.e. chewiness...BROWN SUGAR or a combination of granulated (white sugar) and Brown Sugar (molasses) is IDEAL! ;-D Go with this all WHITE SUGAR recipe it is wonderful! 😀 *P.S. Sometimes, I use "infused" vanilla white (granulated) sugar...the vanilla beans in the sugar brings an even greater FLAVOR profile! ;-D Blessings to you & yours!
This is the 1st time I've come across your videos & I love it! I've made my own toffee before, (using my own recipe), and I have a suggestion for you - just before you pour the toffee on the cookie sheet, turn the fire off & quickly stir in 1 cup of chopped pecans. Then proceed as usual. It'll make a huge, and delicious, difference!
That is the way I make my toffee. One batch I make with chopped pecans and one with almonds. Our family loves chopped nuts and I use dark chocolate. This is a very versatile Recipe.
❤❤Im gonna try this! You both are so sweet! I hope you both know how very blessed you are to have each other!!!...😊❤❤Much love from EAST TENNESSEE ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for showing us how to make such a wonderful treat! Do you also make soft caramels? Your videos and instructions take the guess work out + removes the fear of messing up! Thank you so much for the easy to follow videos from your table to ours. Have a blessed Labor Day weekend.
I'm going to try making this and really appreciate that a candy thermometer isn't needed. This candy is one of my favorites!! Thank you for sharing. 🎄🌟
I thought I loved watching you both before, but then butter toffee happened and I’ve just committed myself to yet another dessert to prepare before Sunday😊You both are great and seem to have the same relationship as my husband and myself. Thank you for sharing such yummy recipes with us all. Merry Christmas to you and yours🎄
My mother always used an iron skillet because it distributes and holds the heat. The trickiest thing about this candy is knowing when it is browned enough, not too much and not enough. But with practice, I found I could get it just right. My mother always used chocolate chips and sprinkled crushed almonds over the chocolate. My FAVORITE candy!! Yum!! We only make this for Christmas. It’s such a treat. Thanks for sharing this video. It brings back childhood memories.
I absolutely love you two! Tom is excellent explaining all the ingredients and steps. Your videos are terrific!!!! Much love and God's blessings to you both! ❤
Woo-hoooo!🎉 I just made toffee for the first time (first of many, I'm sure!) and it took less than fifteen minutes. Looks good and has a nice crunch, so I think I did it right. YUM! TY for the video!🤗
I… have watched this or listened to this video while doing house work at least a dozen times a day. It’s just so joyful, you are both so lovely. I’m going to watch it again real soon. Bye from Sydney Australia 😊

I just LOVE you guys! Hearing you talk about the memories tied to recipes and food makes me feel like you are part of my family memories. So love all you share. Thanks Tom and Melissa👍🏻. I know what you were meaning when you said five thumbs up. I don’t watch videos to make ugly comments. Keep it up💕. Can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you for that encouragement. We really do appreciate the nice comments. We have over 100 videos on our channel posted now. We hope you can enjoy a bunch of them. Thank you again for watching.
Thank you so much for this recipe ! I needed some recipes for nut free candies & cookies ,etc. for our family Christmas party . We have one darling Granddaughter who has allergies to nuts. ! This recipe will become a constant for me 🙏🏻
Listening to you stir the bubbling candy is wonderful ASMR. 😊 Thanks for sharing this. It's much less intimidating now I've seen it done, rather than just reading a recipe.
Made it today for the first time Tom, the only change I had to make was I used dark chocolate, as we did not have milk chocolate in house…it is still cooling, so I’m not sure what it will taste like compared to milk chocolate…thanks Tom 👏👏👏🟦
My most requested candy to make for family and friend gatherings is the toffee candy. I was a wee bit disappointed that this particular recipe was not included in your new cook book which I do love. Looking forward to a possible sequel. 😉 Thanks for all that you and Melissa do. God bless.
I love how you demonstrate simply and slowly, showing all the steps clearly. Everything is well organized and easy to follow. I’m not particularly comfortable in the kitchen, but I’m going to try this! Thank you.
I wanted to add two things. Chocolate chips are easier and melt faster and for the newbies making this, if you turn a jar of peanut butter upside down and sit it there while you are cooking, once it is the same color it is ready :) Have fun - great recipe - thanks :)
Funny… usually I fast-forward through a lot of videos like this but with this one I enjoyed listening to you and your wife talk and I’ve just enjoyed every minute of it
I remember making this as a freshman in high school in Home Ec class in 1966. I think our recipe came from either Better Homes and Gardens or Betty Crocker cookbooks. I made it for several years until my sister and I joined Weight Watchers and convinced our parents to follow the program, too. The was the end of my candy making. Now that I'm diabetic, I doubt I'll be making this but may enjoy a SMALL piece if it happens to be at the family Christmas do. :)
Thank you so much. I had to make a double batch so I could take some to my work friends for Christmas. I knew when my family smelt this candy they were going to need some so I had to make a batch for work and a batch for Home. I made this recipe right alongside your videoand I really appreciate you putting this recipe out there making it easy for us folks. Happy holidays.
I have made this for Christmas every year. Small paper plates with wrap around for all members of the family. I also put almonds on top when chocolate is soft, which is very good. That was my gift to all my family. Thanks for sharing your time, talent, and love with us all. Merry Christmas.
This looks so delicious and soooo easy. I can’t wait until Christmas to make this. It is 109 degrees today in Texas. I need something to do inside the house! This is it!! We have a sharing neighborhood so I will definitely want to share this also.
Wow, only four ingredients, water, butter, sugar and chocolate. I love butter pecan toffee so I think I'd add broken pecan to the mix. Thanks for sharing 💜

This is one of the Best if not the BEST Toffee Candy I have ever made and eaten. I make it all the time even in the summer time... Thanks for sharing this recipe with all of us..
Around that same year, 1984ish my lovely mother introduced this recipe at Christmas time, it became an INSTANT obsession!! This candy is WONDERFUL!!! However, we somehow lost the recipe and couldn’t find it again. So THANK YOU for this video and recipe, this WILL be in my holiday cooking I do this year, I just know my family is going to be so happy to see it again! ❤
Wow, thank you! Just saw this video a couple nights ago and your instructions were so reassuring that I had to try it and it turned out great! I played your video so I could try to match my results with yours - that was super helpful. Enjoyed your stories, too. Thanks again.
Thank you Tom for sharing this recipe with us. I must give this a try for my grandchildren. I also know they would love the one Melissa made for her grandmother. I thank you both again. So until next time God Bless you both and have a Blessed day and stay safe my dear and Special Friends.
This is so beautiful. Not just the delightful recipe, but the shared cooking experience. The safe feeling that is created by the sound of your voice. It's truly lovely.
Definitely! When you live with an angry controlling man - it’s a welcome change I was waiting for irritation or exasperation or a tone 😣 But his genuine gentleness, like you said continued. ❤
Very good video. I’ve tried to make toffee several times and it was a disaster. I really appreciate you showing every step - even cleaning the pan! Thank you again!
This is much easier than my recipe. I had to boil sugar and butter for 7 minutes. It's good, but I'm getting old and look for convenience nowadays. I've made your bar b que ribs, banana salad, and Italian spread. Tonight it's sweet and sour chicken. Everything was yummy! Thank you, don't quit, please.
T & M, I've gotta do this toffee candy recipe! Melissa, PLEASE share the "Ritz, peanut butter dunked in chocolate" cookie recipe that your grama stashed away all the time! I have an idea how it's done, BUT, I want the actual recipe from you. Do it in video form for all us viewers to enjoy!😁👍🤭😇 Doug
Thank you, Tom for sharing this toffee recipe. I cannot wait to make this for my family. Looks so easy. I always thought it was a massive process and would not tackle it. Am so excited and anxious to make this.
Thank you sir !! One using salted butter, which my wife only buys lol. Can't wait to try this and also thank you for the visuals with the penny, I've seen her waste alot before because she couldn't find a good representation for what it should looks like. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄!!
Back when the kids were young I used the toffee portion to make peanut brittle. Everyone loved it too! This recipe brought back some fond memories. Thank you for sharing it.
My grandmother's friend showed me how to make this type of candy once when I was young, but I forgot the details over the years. Glad to have this pop up in my suggestions today. The only thing different she did was add sliced almonds to the toffee mixture. But since we have a nut allergy in the house, I don't need them so this recipe is perfect. Thanks for posting!
I've always been a bit scared of this recipe (more traditional versions, with the dreaded candy thermometer!) but you made this seem achievable. And it looks wonderful. I copied the recipe as you talked and will be trying it soon. You and Melissa make a great team. I've just subscribed, Oh, your story of getting this recipe from a co-working in the 1980s (though you look too young to have been working then) made me think of a dear womam who I worked with who was a great cook. For my birthday one year she made a carrot cake - which Id never had before (shame on you, Mama) - and I'm sure my face fell when she said 'carrot cake'. But I thought I'm a grown up, I can take a bite and say it;s great, and thank you, and then just discard the rest when no one was looking. Much to my delight and surprise, it was, of course, amazingly good. I'm sure I ate more than my share that day. She gave me the recipe and I've been making it ever since. No way I was going to deprive MY children of that glorious dessert.
We never have but I don’t see why you couldn’t. We’d recommend chopping the nuts a lot since the toffee itself isn’t really thick. Enjoy your candy and Merry Christmas! Thanks for watching our videos!
@shannon, did you try it? I'm curious if you could sprinkle some sliced almonds around in the parchment-lined pan and carefully pour the toffee over. If anyone has tried that, could you comment, please, on how it went? Thanks. Happy munching!😂
My all time favorite candy ❤❤ I agree that food brings the best memories, there for I always cook whatever my kids and grandkids want me to cook for them it just brings love in to the family ❤ Thank you Tom & Melissa ❤
I've been making a nearly identical version for 20 years. The one thing I would suggest as a change, is don't put the chocolate on the hot toffee and then stick it in the fridge. Refrigerate the toffee to get it cooled off, then melt your chocolate in a double boiler and spread it over the set toffee. The main reason is presentation. Cold does weird things to milk chocolate, which isn't surprising considering it's basically all fat. It gets hazy and the texture is a little weird because the milk solids try to separate. Also, fridges smell funny and placing melted chocolate in there will make it absorb smells. Probably don't want to leave last nights fish fry in the fridge if you're gonna put candy in there! Definitely chill the toffee and if you want, stick a bowl of water in the fridge with it. The added moisture will help keep the sugars emulsified and your toffee will set a little softer and break apart easier. Once the toffee has set and chilled completely, pull it back out, drizzle/spread your chocolate on top. Add a little decoration if you like; I'll drop white chocolate chips on for some visual contrast. Let the chocolate cool a little bit before dropping the white chocolate chips on though, otherwise they'll melt. After everything has cooled to room temp, break it apart and store it in an airtight container on some paper towels.
Thank you for making this Butter toffee .In my mind I .are it SOOO hard .I can't believe it is SOOOO easy . I sure will make this THANK YOU MERRY CHRISTMAS
You for sharing the recipe! I think my favorite part of the video was watching you take that first bite and savoring and crunching my good taste the yummy Ness just watching that I have to make this recipe and like you will immediately package it off so I don’t eat it candy is my favorite food group L O L have a peaceful evening, thank you again for sharing!
I use this same recipe. Mine includes chopped pecan pieces. I received the recipe from a friend’s grandmother back in the late 60’s. Her guidance was to cook it over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the color of peanut butter then pour over chopped pecans, topping with Hershey bars while hot. It is very popular. I enjoyed your video very much.
Thank you Tom and Melissa, ive been away from home for Christmas for 3 years now because ive immigrated to another country, but hearing your voices, the accent and cadence and body language and the way you ended your video just sent me back home for just a moment. I learned a lot of different cooking tips in so many kitchens of neighbors and friends and families from church and it felt just like that, thank you.
Hi, Tom and Melissa I found your TH-cam channel and I'm so glad I did. I've been watching all your videos. I love how sweet the both of you are. I worked for the School system for 21 years before I went out on disability due to cancer. I was a custodian and bus driver. I want to thank you both for loving and caring for our children. I can tell by your videos how caring you both are. I will be watching all your videos. They are awesome. Thank you so much for sharing. Can't wait to see all of your videos.

My recipe calls for brown sugar but never gets crunchy, I'm using yours next time. Thanks

I thought about that but didn't know if it would mess it up, thank you!
Or, you could sprinkle the pecans (or anything else: pretzels, crackers, nuts, etc,) evenly on the baking sheet and pour the toffee over it!

I made this for Christmas! I have to admit I consumed more than I gifted. Absolutely amazing!!
I'm definitely making this TOMORROW!! ❤️😋🍫 Can you add nuts to the toffee right before you pour it?? I truly love yalls channel!!♥️🎄🎁🎅🙏🏻
@JR-yy1iv not yet. I've had a couple of surgeries.. but hopefully over the holidays!😊🍽🧡
My all time favorite candy ❤❤ I agree that food brings the best memories, there for I always cook whatever my kids and grandkids want me to cook for them it just brings love in to the family ❤ Thank you Tom & Melissa ❤
That looks so good and delicious, I would like to try this at Christmas time this year.😊❤

You could celebrate Christmas in July - if you hurry! The month is almost over! Stores get away with it so I think we can too in the kitchen!
This recipe is very similar to a recipe I got from our grandmother. And you are so right--simple and delicious!! We make it mostly at Christmas, too.

Ditto, couldn't agree more!
Thank you so much for the kind words. We really do appreciate that you are watching our channel. Have a great day and a very Merry Christmas!
