    So between scouring Japanese wikis and a total of 18 playthroughs (at least 800 hours), I was hell bent on getting English guides out there!
    Of course I start with the two Protagonists with the most number of branching paths (Urpina and Balmaint) as they really needed the walkthroughs. Took freaking nine months for those two alone. Taria and Leonard shouldn’t take anywhere nearly as long to get FAQs out for.

    Oh man, SaGa: Scarlet Grace is fantastic. I'm curious to see how you enjoyed it! (Disclosure: I gave the game a 10/10 on RPG Site)
    Edit: The final boss really is a test of everything you know about the battle system, took me hours to kill him lmao. As for your other complaints (lack of exploration, simplicity in the worldbuilding, etc), I think you must've missed stuff like Production. There's an entire gameplay mechanic where you can facilitate trade between different regions, and doing so will give you more backstory about the world, and how these regions tie into it. Even beyond that though, speaking to characters in each region tells you much more about an area's history, which not only explains how they tie into the world as a whole, but tends to give you clues about the (many) puzzles tied to the location.
    That's the biggest thing - at a glance, Scarlet Grace feels much more linear, but when you get down to it, each region is like a puzzle, and there's so many different things that you can find in them. Optional boss fights, side characters, weapons, etc. Even if you accomplish something one way, you can be rest assured that there was at least 2 other ways of handling something, often with a vastly different result, and a different payout.
    100% the game isn't for everyone, but between the fantastic battle system, the excellent soundtrack, and the surprising flexibility for how you can tackle each playthrough - it's no surprise that for the folks the game clicks with, it *really* clicks.

      I've beaten every SaGa game besides SaGa 3, Unlimited Saga, and Scarlet Grace (waiting for a sale), but I will say that Scarlet Grace's art style is kind of limiting in my eyes. The character models are all really cheaply made with ugly eyes and no facial expressions, so they just look like dolls. The tech animations are also a major downgrade compared to the previous games in the series. I do think it's cool that Kenji Ito came back to compose the games after not working on SaGa Frontier II and Unlimited Saga, though! I feel like Kawazu was begging Square to let him make a new SaGa game for years, but the stigma of Unlimited Saga kept them from greenlighting it until finally deciding to let him make it for a very, VERY low budget. Also, fun fact, there was a Square developed RPG parody series that ran from the NES to the PS2, and in the PS2 game, the final boss' ultimate attack is called "Unlimited Saga", and Kawazu and another man stumble from the background completely drunk and vomit all over your team, I'm not joking. Let's hope that Scarlet Grace marks a return of the series, and that we'll see a higher budget console game on PS5 or Switch in the coming years!

      @@Jordan3DS Romancing SaGa 3 piqued my interest on its aesthetic, but are these games really that hard? I mean, I've played SMT before, and like Johnny said, I'm more accustomed to "hit the weakness to win" kind of gameplay. I may check this series out regardless, but I do want to know what the hell I'm getting into XD

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@analogbrayn I haven't played Scarlet Grace (waiting for a sale) so I can't speak for it, but the games really aren't as hard as their reputation. The original SaGa Game Boy games are pretty easy, Romancing SaGa 1 is easy, Romancing SaGa 2 is pretty tough, Romancing SaGa 3 is really easy, SaGa Frontier is pretty easy if you know what you're doing, and SaGa Frontier II is a decent difficulty. Basically, the games are a LOT easier than SMT. You can save anytime you want in every game, and Romancing SaGa 2, 3, and SaGa Frontier refill your HP to max after every battle. Even if you struggle with 3, there's a spot in the game where you can get your team to grind for you to get you more EXP/weapon levels if you need it. If you do play it, though, I highly recommend using this guide ( romancing-saga-3.blogspot.com/p/rs3-game.html ), it has all of the information that you could ever need to know about the game, plus maps for every dungeon. The gameplay is based around what are called "techs", which are basically skills. Depending on certain factors like what weapon type you're using, what level the enemy is, what tech you use, and so forth, you can spark (unlock) more powerful techs. There's resources telling you exactly how to spark techs, so it's pretty simple. Honestly, though, 3 is so easy that you can spam normal attacks every battle and come out on top. 3 also has a Life Point system where each time a character dies, they lose 1 LP, and if they run out, then they don't come back until you sleep at an inn. So basically, just heal every time you go to town and the LP system basically doesn't exist.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@analogbrayn Also, RS3 has a really nice system where once you spark a tech and use it enough times, the character "masters" it and then you can put it on anyone that you want. Pro tip: Have a martial artist or two on your team, like Ellen. Martial arts are ungodly broken in 3 for some reason. I didn't use any, but my brother did, and Ellen hit 9999 damage on the final boss every turn (for comparison, my characters did around 3000). With the ability to give techs to other characters, you can spark the most powerful techs in the game and then give them to other members of your party to destroy. If you want to spark all of the most powerful techs early on, there's an enemy called "Ashura" in one of the dungeons that can spark everything. Hope this helps!

    I’d recommend trying out Romancing SaGa 2, that game is *incredibly* ambitious, and I don’t think we’ve seen anyone do anything similar with their story, despite modern technology being more suited to telling that kind of story then the SNES.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's incredibly innovative and ambitious in a lot of ways, but I feel that the gameplay falls flat compared to the other games. Normal battles and bosses are just way too difficult a lot of the time, even when your team is as strong as it can possibly be. Even generic enemies have too much HP and can spam high damage attacks that hit your whole party, in a game where healing spells are single target. If the gameplay wasn't so brutal, then I would definitely love it a lot more, but as it stands it's a game where everything but the gameplay is absolutely incredible.

    What do you know, I am playing Scarlet Grace right now as well. Love the battle system and how impactful status effects are. One of the bosses I got them to the point in which I almost stun locked them between using the skills Heaven and Earth along with Sweep so they couldn't use their devastating attacks. The Scarlet Fiends were pretty nasty.
    Seems to be a great game to play for an hour or two, but I agree that it can feel a little repetitive due to how battle focused it was. I don't think it was due to the Vitas hardware though, but an intentional design decision such as the stripped down board game look of Unlimited Saga was intentional response to RPGs at the time.

It looks like Final Fantasy 6, but it's open world more or less and is really about the world and how you interact with it more than it is about characters, which seems to be the case here as well. Character graphics are simple, but enemies, bosses and strong move animations are over the top.
    The soundtrack is ambiguous and hard to forget. Romancing Saga is a "craft your own story", you trigger side quests by talking to others. Along with a FF2 way of leveling up. Where using moves, powers them up and learn moves mid-battle.
    Its a series meant to overwhelm because of how ambitious it really is. But highly recommended.

      It seems like Square Enix is trying their hardest to make SaGa popular in the west, since it's been one of the biggest Japanese franchises for decades. It seems like they're doing the same thing with Dragon Quest, honestly, XI was the first time that they've really marketed the franchise over here, even putting a character in Smash. > Unlimited Saga was my first SaGa experience.
    Man, I feel bad for Johnny. USaga is a very weird game. If you make the effort to learn about the game and view it as a single player Table Top RPG, the game is easier to digest. I don't think anyone will disagree that Unlimited Saga's sound track is really really good.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the one that disagrees, then, I really dislike the OST. I listened to it a couple of weeks ago (because I had no intention of actually playing the game considering how bad it is), and while I liked the first Battle Theme, Victory Theme, and Battle Theme EX, the rest of the soundtrack was just awful noise. It's weird, because Masashi Hamauzu did a pretty great job on SaGa Frontier II (despite most of the OST being motifs on the same theme), but Unlimited Saga is really, REALLY bad. Like, one of the worst RPG OSTs I've ever heard bad.

    • @soranortthirteen561
      @soranortthirteen561 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jordan3DS To call the rest of Unlimited Saga's OST awful noise is underselling the character themes and the amount of variety in the soundtrack, especially the battle themes. Ruby's theme is one of my favorites that captures her gutsy and feminine attitude to conquer the Seven Wonders in her adventures. Ventus' Theme is a somber guitar solo that makes his quest for his brother's death feel like a personal endeavor. Laura's theme is she's swept off into a self-discovering adventure after the death of her would-be husband, Pablo. Each character theme, I argue, fits their character traits and quest very well, even though it is the only theme you will hear on the world map.
      As for the battle themes, I can't fault you for not liking them since some of them are used for specific boss encounters. Like, exclusive to this villain or sidequest kind of deal. Not to mention the jarring genre shift towards electronic music (The BT versions are evident of this). Some of my favorites are BT Ver. 3, 4, 6, and 8. I think the game's OST is still good for having a lot of variety in its battle themes and fitting character themes, but we can agree to disagree.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soranortthirteen561 Sure, we can agree to disagree. It's good that you got some enjoyment out of the OST, at least, I was just thinking "what am I listening to?" for most of the songs. Not all of them were like that, though, I just found some of them to be kind of bland and generic. I get the same feeling with some of the songs on the FFXIII OST, sometimes I feel like Hamauzu practices freeform jazz in with classical music, it can feel very unstructured and spontaneous.

    Sounds like every Romancing Saga to be honest. Hard, seemingly random, kinda weak main plot... The series is known for creating new and interesting systems, having excellent music, tons of freedom in how you play the game and a fantastic roster of characters and artwork. So its an experience. Not one that everyone will love as evidenced by its obscurity in the West. I really love it. The battle system in this game is real engaging once you start to understand how it all works. Alot of cool strategies you can employ and you have alot of freedom to create your own flavor of battle tactics. I’m glad they released it in the west. Best Saga game is Saga Frontier IMO

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like it's not just confusing, it's blatantly anti-player. In every other SaGa game, you can save anywhere you want. In Unlimited SaGa, you can only save in towns, so you can genuinely lose *hours* of grinding or dungeon progress because of the game's awful focus on RPG. Also, you don't actually retain any of the stats you get in a dungeon unless you beat the boss, so if you can't beat it for whatever reason, then you're screwed. I've heard stories like someone being stuck on a space fighting an insanely powerful enemy every single turn that they couldn't escape only for their character to eventually die and lose them hours of progress, it's awful. Kawazu was definitely on something when he made that game.

    You probably won't see this comment, but it's worth mentioning anyways maybe for peeps reading through the comments. I should note that before you potentially tackle the remake of RS1, Minstrel Song (The European subtitle for the remake) is basically a completely different game from the original RS1. You have the same goal and world, sure, but the mechanics and exploration are entirely different to the point that it's more the FF7 Remake type of Remake (Minus the change in genre.) rather than an FF1 GBA type of remake.
    That being said, play the remake instead, the original is FF1NES levels of broken, and while I love that kind of thing to death personally, it's not a good first impression for the Romancing Trilogy as a whole.

      SaGa really does feel like an underdog series over here, which is funny considering how big it is in Japan. I'd say Minstrel Song is kind of in the middle of a FFI GBA type remake and a FFVIIR type remake. It has a lot of differences, sure, but it still follows the same structure of Romancing SaGa 1, at least. Final Fantasy VII Remake has nothing to do with FFVII whatsoever, and it's practically a completely different game. I would classify Minstrel Song as a "heavily expanded remake" while FFVII R is a straight up spinoff or reimagining.

      To me I find Minstrel Song as like a Greatest Hits remake. Takes mechanics from all the games after it, alters them a bit, and ties it up in a neat package.

      @@Einsiety Agreed, it does feel very different from the original, to the point that someone playing each version could get an entirely different opinion on the game. Personally, I always try to play the original version of a game, then play the remake later down the line when I feel like replaying it. I feel that it makes you notice and appreciate the changes and improvements that the remake has made, and also kind of gives you a feeling of nostalgia in a way that you wouldn't have otherwise.

    Here how the Saga games go...
    They are not Connected!
    Saga 1 (Final Fantasy Legend) came on the Gameboy. Best Edition (remake) came on the Wonderswan color, and has been fan-translated.
    Saga 2 (Final Fantasy Legend 2) came on the Gameboy. Best Edition (remake) came on the NDS, and has been fan-translated.
    Saga 3 (Final Fantasy Legend 3) came on the Gameboy. Best Edition (remake) came on the NDS, and has been fan-translated.
    Romancing Saga came out on the SNES, and has been fan-translated. Best Edition (remake) came out on the PS2 in the US, but not in Europe
    Romancing Saga 2 came out on the SNES, never fully fan-translated. Best Edition (remaster) came out on most recent digital platforms.
    Romancing Saga 3 came out on the SNES, never fully fan-translated. Best Edition (remaster) came out on most recent digital platforms.
    Unlimited Saga came out on PS2 on all regions. To bad it sucked.
    Saga Scarlet Grace came out on the Vita and was ported later to other platforms.
    The rest are browser and mobile crap and you shouldn't bother with them.

    My only experience with the SaGa series is I had a demo disc that came with my original Playstation and it had a trailer/cinematic for SaGa Frontier, and I had no idea what the hell to make of it.
    So I just scrolled over to Crash 2 and played Snow Go for the umpteenth time.

    Having watched Johnny over the years, I can tell that, when it comes to rpgs, he cares a lot more about stats than strategy (I mean he grinded in Dark Souls. Seriously hardly anyone does that). In games where strategy matters far more than stats, feeling overpowered comes from how much you have figured out the game mechanics, enemy AI, and outsmarting enemies. If you want to know what I'm talking about, go watch Deltre's Fire Emblem Conquest let's play. He plays it on the hardest difficulties which is one of the hardest Fire Emblem experiences you can have and he make it look so easy.

    • @TheNuts1225
      @TheNuts1225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chad_Eldridge it's hard but I think Conquest on lunatic is way, WAY harder. The DS games are really hard too on their hardest difficulties.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there's a big difference between requiring strategy and requiring exploits, though. For example, stuff like Conquest or New Mystery of the Emblem on the hardest difficulties doesn't require straight up skill, it only requires knowledge of how you can break the game. I feel like Fire Emblem games on the hardest difficulty always go too far to the point that you physically cannot play them without exploits, and that makes it really boring.

      @@Jordan3DS Well, Awakening lunatic+ is straight up dice rolling, and 3 Houses maddening is just the right difficulty. Not a player luck based gamble, not needing exploits, makes one think.
      So nah, not all FE games which have high differences modes rely on exploits.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-un-known Three Houses is better with it, but it's still very unfairly stacked against the player. Giving enemies poison weapons and letting them walk through your units just throws all strategy out the window. Things like letting the Dark Knight move also means that you basically can't beat the game without building Lysithea as early as possible.
