@@Hey-Its-Dingo You Ain't lying, and even introduces Nico~ I truly hope she'll be back in DMC6 (maybe for a "Ladies' Night" DLC like we were supposed to originally get in 5?)~!

For anyone who's curious, most (if not all) of Nero's moves are terms related to gambling. Table Hopper usually means someone switching tables in a casino/gambling hall while looking for a high payout. Which kind of explains why it's a dodging move.
Yeah, I think they initially wanted to cast Patricia Ja Lee (Cassie, Pink from Turbo and In Space) as Lady but it fell through. Shame too because she’s awesome
This was in another interview he did, but IIRC the reasoning for this is because toku actors had the experience to do both the physical mocap work and the voice overs.
One thing the game doesn't really make clear, but the manual does, is that Nero is an orphan that was brought into Kyrie's family, so while it can seem like Credo is just Nero's boss that he doesn't get along with, there's a bit more to their relationship than that. Also, you can actually see Dante in the game's intro, twice, before Nero makes it to the opera. The first is when the camera does a flip with Nero. While it's pointed at the sky, for a split second you can see Dante looking down on the action from a rooftop. The second is when the camera pans out to give a big view of the city and the opera house (church?) Kyrie is singing in. Dante can be seen near the bottom of the screen on one of the roofs. He was keyed in on Nero before they even fought.
Even DMC5 has a manual, and that's a 2019 game (I guess it's somewhat still relevant to Japanese audiences?). There's also the canon-adjacent novel Deadly Fortune that was what Bingo Morihashi (or was it Itsuno?) said is how they wanted 4's story to originally play out. It has info/changes with big ones such as Nero's past as an orphan and how his Devil Bringer came to be one month (or was it six) prior to the game or how the Devil arms Dante got were actually bought from home and used at the bosses rather than them transforming into the weapons. It even has smaller plot threads such as when Lady fought the Angelos for the first time which would lead her to inform Dante of the Order's existence (after bringing it up to a demonic-artifact collector) and how devious Sanctus is with poisoning the old priest to claim his title (then briefly met Vergil after his innaguration-which bought him to the conclusion of Nero's origin in the present) as well as manipulating Angus and Credo's egos for his own bidding. Even has 3rd person POVs that fills some light on characters' mind (being Nero, Dante, Credo, Agnus, Sanctus, Lady, I think Trish as Gloria, and hell even Berial got one).
@@travistotle Dark Souls 1 had a manual/guidebook in 2011 with a lot of tidbits, but it was actually very incorrect with a lot of the statements it made about the game. Ether it was incorrect lore, or missunderstanding how certain mechanics worked.
After he gets thought, the two worst games of DMC 1 and 2 of the bad version of Dante black hair not the sliver hair. Which, Matt saying D!ck move Capcom.
@@travistotle think of it this way, he can briefly experience the sensation felt by DMC fans thanks to DmC before DMC5, so it'll make him appreciate it more.
The ending of this game is such a tearjerker. I cried when Dante said "Maybe even a Devil May Cry 4 you" to Nero. Truly one of the moment in dmc history
Loved half way through the game when Kyrie got kidnapped and Nero looked right into the camera and said “It’s crying time” and cried all over the place.
@@ehmwhy well with all honesty despite kyrie being a weak character all around I could felt nero's impact when he rapildy yelled and punched the floor
...dammit, I kinda wish that was in the game for real though! I can just imagine Dante giving some snark to Sanctus with a line like, "Sorry, pal, you'll get no sympathy from me. Hell, I doubt even a devil may cry for you." Like, it's *so* stupid, and I _love_ it!
You joke, but when Nero asks Dante if they'll meet again, fans had to wait around 10 years for a continuation, since there was a big gap between DMC4 and 5. It made that scene bittersweet as a cliffhanger.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that whenever a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 does happen, Nero HAS to be a playable character alongside Dante, Trish, and Vergil.
Fun little fact. Kyrie is voiced by Stephanie Sheh who also voices Orihime Inoue in Bleach. Kyrie even looks like Orihime, specifically in her Hueco Mundo attire.
Which is why I always say DMC4 is just their take on a Bleach arc. I mean freaking Nero is voiced by Ichigo's voice actor as well and is trying to save Kyrie who as you pointed out is basically Orihime.
I know next to nothing about Bleach, but seeing Ichigo and Orihime next to Nero and Kyrie, well I can certainly see the inspiration for their design in this game.
16:09 When Gloria was revealed to be Trish, I immediately thought to myself “This was supposed to be its own character but the idea was scrapped due to time costraints”. I never checked to see if that’s true or just a silly headcanon, but I swear to God that’s what it feels like to me. So, so weird how they used an incredibly detailed and original design for a silly disguise.
@@meganinten0078 Sad Fact: the Reason we DMC Devil May Cry is because Capcom was jealous of God of Wars sales and wanted DMC to appeal to the west more. In fact Japan was doing so poorly in sales that a lot of Japanese companies had to pander to the West to make sales.
Correction: Nero's glowing arm is actually called the "Devil Bringer," not the "Buster." Buster is just the name of the grab move he uses with the Devil Bringer.
The one thing i will always remember about this game is the unused Devil Trigger designs for Nero and Dante. Especially Dante's,because his was actually a Perfect Devil Trigger, much like the second form he had in the second game. I really wonder where he would have unlocked that if it was kept in the game
@@speedy932key4 Not sure. I haven't played God War. I was thinking of stuff like stipulations for fighting secret bosses in fighting games. Even if the reward is so unsatisfying it feels like a waste (Hi Night Terror from Soul Calibur 3)
I always had a huge soft spot for DMC4 because it was not only my first introduction to the seres, I also admittedly had a little bit of a crush on Nero in this game.
Same here. While I don’t love DMC4, I certainly don’t dislike or hate the game either. It definitely has its flaws. Another addition why I liked Nero from the beginning is that he’s voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. Literally every anime character he’s played are some of my top favorites and him being Nero was ideal casting.
Gloria is the main reason why I remember this game 😏 Underrated waifu 🥰 Such a shame she is just Trish wearing a disguise. Edit: DMC4 Dante looks weird... Not bad just weird 😅 At least he looks better than DMC3 Dante DMC2 has the best Dante's design ever
The Proud Souls were a neat thing, but the problem is you had to grind them to hell and back. You didn't need to grind much since you got that bundle, but they were a pain, since the cost of the proud soul abilities increased each time you bought an ability. And you only gain proud souls at the end of each mission, or after you died. And you don't know how much you would get until you died or get to the end of a mission
Well said, it’s like the saddest thing right? The combat and its pacing is fantastic but having to grind in a game with level design that wears thin so fast. IMO DMC4 is awesome to play but I rarely replay it.
Not only that, but Proud Souls make the issue of Red Orbs eventually becoming useless EVEN WORSE since they take over their role for upgrades. And once you get all the abilities, Proud Souls now become actually useless. I'm really glad that 5 didn't take the same approach
@@kingdomkey2262I was about to say I really never had an issue playing SE and acquiring the skills, never grinded them and felt like I was earning them at a fair pace that let me integrate new moves into my combos and feel fully comfortable with them before learning a new one, stopped me feeling like I had learnt everything halfway through the game.
Theory as to why Dante is shown to be more chipper in this game vs 2, he saw Nero and knew he wasn’t alone, he lost his mother, father and brother but he has Nero
Or DMC2 means so little to Itsuno, or anyone, he did not give a crap to make it consistent. It is NOT a sequel to 2. It's a sequel to 3 and 1. At this point in time, DMC2 was set at the end of the time line so they wouldn't have to deal with it.
@@whodatninja439 you’re not wrong actually now that I look back but having the full picture I feel 2 makes sense just being that sad middle chapter in Dante’s life where he’s left with nothing and it’s trying weird gimmicks, probably would’ve pulled the coin back out if Nero wasn’t there
It also has the best location imo, 5 was great until halfway through where you’re just climbing the qilopth tower, dmc3 was just the demon tower the whole time but dmc4 had so much range in its locations
You’re actually pretty spot on with the Power Ranger hypothesis, Rueben got hired to do the mocap and VA Dante because of his nationality and the fact that he was a very popular super sentai stunt man at the time, he suggested that Dan also be hired leading to him being Vergil and the both of them recommended Johnny for similar reasons with the added bonus that he was a very popular VA in the late 2000s, it was a perfect storm
I love Dante’s interaction with the bosses throughout the series, but 4 has one of my favorites: killing Echidna in one shot after beating her, and saying “I think that look suits you better.”
My favorite line from him is when he prepares to use the Yamato to destroy the last monolith, he says "I know this is a historical monument, but it's bad for the community".
Johnny may not have found this since he didn't bring it up, but Nero has a sort of secret drop kick that you can use by taunting at full sprint. It does deal a small amount of damage, but mainly it knocks enemies down to give you a better opening to focus down one or two enemies. I hope he looks more into what taunting can do in these games, and especially 5. Nero gets an air taunt in 5 that is incredibly useful for maintaining air time for juggling enemies or avoiding damage on the ground. Taunting in general with DMC is weird because it seems mostly pointless early on, so you likely don't bother with it most of the game, but once you get Devil Trigger it becomes invaluable since successful taunts now partially fill the DT gauge. Also taunting Vergil in his boss fights will have him usually taunt back is a great detail.
I LOVE Johnny Yong Bosch, too. He was Vash Stampede, the main protagonist of Trigun, his first anime role. Ichigo Kurosaki, the main protagonist of Bleach, in which he voiced him in the English dub of both the old anime and the new anime and the English dub of the Japanese live-action adaptation. Renton, the main protagonist of Eureka 7. Lelouch vi Britannia, the main protagonist of Code Geass. More specifically, Code Geass that focuses on Lelouch. But he only voiced him as a teen/adult. And the list goes on.
24:00 I was a huge FF8 fan, and playing Nero in DMC4 had me with a huge grin on my face the whole time just going "This is if Squall were an action game protagonist". Playing DMC4 over the pandemic made me really want a mod that let me play Squall and have a gunblade, and then when I finally played DMC5 the gameplay similarities just got too much and I knew I had to be the one to mod Squall and the gunblade in if no one else would.
Johnny I felt the same way about Wesker. "Wait Wesker had sex? I never thought he had interest in anything other than evil plans to rule the world. I honestly thought he had zero interest in anything else."
Absolutely love what this game (would eventually) did for the franchise. Can’t wait for you to reach 5 one of the best action games of all time IMO. BTW keep up the great work, one of my favorite review channels on the platform. Great mix of comedy and honesty.
I do love the headcanon idea that Dante was no longer the depressed version we see him in DMC2 once he discovered the existence of Nero a kindred spirit and potential family member, which he’s been missing since Nelo Angelo’s (Vergil’s) death.
DMC 4 is a weird game for me. It's what I like to call a "Bridge Game." It's a game that serves to bridge the gap between the previous game that everyone loved (DMC 3) and the one that would fine tune everything new it introduced (DMC 5). DMC 5 would go on to perfect everything that 4 did, so it's kind out hard to go back to 4 after playing 5.
Yeah, when I've been asked by friends and family which DMC games to play I recommend them either DMC3 or DMC5. One has a better campaign and the other has the best gameplay in the series. There is very little reason to recommend 4 at this point.
This is hands down one of the best DMC4 vids, I love how balanced your reviews are. Fun fact, for Blitzs with Dante if you Royal Guard after hitting it you can negate the damage you take and quickly get rid of his electric shield with the RG.
A bit of trivia here about the "Lady in Red" from the opening cutscene of Vergil's campaign, she is not the lady that Vergil "boned" for years people thought she was Vergil's mother and it went into a crazy search for who she was even to the point to data mining the game to obtain the model and see under the hood who she was, its just Kyrie but in red with a hood covering her face. Now i know what you all thinking "but that means Kyrie is Nero's.....mother? how?!" the team used Kyrie's model on ALL female of the order and civilians of Fortuna, it was easier than doing a different model for each woman in the game and since pretty much all of them have a hood covering their faces the team didnt care about them having Kyrie's face, so you could think that the entire female population of Fortuna is just Kyrie clones or the real reason, the team wanted to "cut corners" which is a very common thing to do. The thing with "the lady in red" its no more of a "the color of her dress reminds Vergil of Dante" i mean that's what Hideaki said in an interview when was questioned about it, i dont remember exactly but you can easly search it on google by just searching for The Lady in Red, she turns around because she gets curious why this man is looking at her so intently, and that's it, biggest DMC4 mystery was debunked as just "yeah we did that just to remind Vergil about Dante" she isnt Nero's mother or Vergil's lover, she is just another lady walking around on the streets of Fortuna. Now Nero's mother is another mystery on itself because there are rumors that she was a hooker that vergil had a one off and later on she had nero but vergil was gone at that point so she left nero in the doors of the order and Kyrie took him adopting him into the order, many fans (even myself included) dont believe on the "hooker" thing because well Vergil seems too refined and serious to just have a "one off with a hooker one night" and we believe its some kind of affair with a demon while he was in hell that prehaps she had connections with higher demons like Mundus and so on, and kinda the same story of his mother repeated itself with him and she ended up in the human world leaving Nero in fortuna because in my theory Vergil knew that Dante could protect him and tell him what to do once the time is right.
You mention how all Dante, Vergil, and Nero's voice actors all worked on Power Rangers, but additionally, Reuben Langdon ALSO played B-Fighter Yanma in B-Fighter Kabuto, which was adapted into Beetleborgs Metallix. Thats right: Dante, son of a bugman, is a Beetleborg.
13:37 - Sanctus in the prequel tie-in novel speculated that Nero was born from a knocked up prostitute ditching her newborn at an orphanage based on the circumstances. So if that lady in red actually is her, this implies that Vergil knows his way around the red light district really well.
Coffee, breakfast, and Johnny’s DMC4 review??? LETS GO! 14:25 I seriously think Credo is the best fight in the game, next to all the Dante v Nero fights. Just everything about Credo’s fight is so much fun and had layers of sadness and badassery to it.
Cool tidbit about Nero's buster arm. If you repeatedly tap the buster arm button when grabbing most enemies, he'll continue attacking them for more damage. If you grab those same enemies in DT form, his special grab attack will be more brutal, and tapping the buster arm button works the same way as I said earlier. For bosses the same applies for the most part, but you can also rev your sword for bonus damage like you could've done at 26:49. And if you're in DT form during these special attack animations, you can spam the shoot button to shoot Nero's summon swords at the boss for extra damage. Since you already know Nero's in DMC5, these tips I just told you apply in that game too. Can't wait to see you get to that one Johnny!
The game isn't too bad in terms of structure, Nero feels a little vanilla compared to how godly Dante felt in 4, but the downside to Dante is that he feels completely broken in levels that clearly weren't meant for him. It gets repetitive after a while, and I'm glad you pointed out how much worse it is playing as Vergil (not that Vergil himself is bad, his moves feel like an improved version of 3, but the reuse of levels makes the game feel even more repetitive). I was so burnt out by the game that I didn't even try the Lady and Trish campaign.
God, there's a lot of info floating around about how much they had wanted to incorporate into the game's story but didn't have the time or resources to do so. Just for one example, I believe that Nero until a little while before the game starts had two regular arms, but during an incident where he had to protect Kyrie, he basically got perma-DT on just his one arm. It's vaguely alluded to in the game, but they really wanted to flesh out the new cast but just couldn't.
26:30 I am glad you said that because when I first fought him I was thinking the exact same thing. Especially since Drop Out was one of my fav songs and I played the crap out of it to get an AAA
6:37, right on the money actually! I forgot the exact interview/year this was, but Reuben Langdon confirmed this in an interview for a Power Ranges convention with Dan Southworth and Johnny Young Bosch, due to the live-action choreography involved in the production of DMC3
I remember that time where we had NO idea where Nero fit on the Sparda Bloodline. Was he Dante's Nephew? Was he Dante's Cousin? I don't _knooow..._ Well, come V, we got an answer to that...
26:43 I think they are talking about Dialga's CRY. The noise it makes when it enters battle. Not it's battle theme. It doesn't sound at all like the Gen 4 theme, and not very much like its Mystery Dungeon 2 theme.
13:52 I looked it up and found that Kyrie is voiced by Stephanie Sheh, whom also voiced Orihime Inoue in bleach. Orihime is a orangehead who wears a comparable outfit during her damsel in distress arc. Both are combatively useless. Both of their boyfriends are voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. They don't share eastern actors, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came out there was some Bleach inspiration involved in at most her design, or at least her western casting. It's possible there was no inspiration, but the similarities speak for themselves.
24:03 Good lord what a tease. I’ve been loving the DMC love (I adore these games so much), but I’ve also been itching for the Final Fantasy revisit. It’s because of you and Clement that I chose to touch the series. I played some of VI, liked what I played, and then moved on to IX. I beat IX. It has now become one of my favorite games of all time. Wish I played the updated rereleases though, as that would’ve made my grind session for Freya’s Dragon Crest a lot faster.
Same here, I’m glad that hint confirmed it’s coming soon. While I hope it’s the next one after the DMC5 video, he did say “later this year” so it might be after the next series of videos after this one
In page 217 of the 3142 Graphic Arts artbook, character illustrator Tatsuya Yoshikawa revealed some additional aspects regarding Dante and Lady: Dante is around 40 years old by the events of DMC4. This is yet another answer to the Vague Age of the DMC characters which left fans wondering for a long time. Lady wears sunglasses in this game, but they're not just for fashion; they're also meant to practically hide her heterochromia.
26:16 That looks like a mutated Gobaal (Sorry if I spelled it wrong) from Monster Hunter (Which was basically a giant angler fish) funny since that's another Capcom IP.
I figured you'd end up like this for DMC4. Can't wait to hear what you think of DmCDMC. I actually really enjoy that game combat wise as well, and in level design, but that Story... there is no fixing that.
SSS video !! :) Really glad you like it, i rejoin you on the castle part, really tedious, happy you like Nero (it was wild back then when the character was announce as the next protagonist), anyway i can't wait to see your reaction over the DMC5 !
dialga doesn't have a theme, (unless you mean primal dialga, but i digress) they're talking about his CRY. ya know, the noise he makes when he pops out the pokeball. and yeah, i totally hear it, crazy they sampled dialga's cry for that song, lol.
My dad loved the fact that dante was a boss fight in this game most likely to make up for the fact that you couldn't fight him in vergils story in the special edition of 3
Funny enough Rueban Langdon was also on B Fighter Kabuto as a cast member with a suit as Mac Windy in Jap, which in America is known as Big Bad Beetleborgs Metallix.
I may not know much about Power Rangers ( I don't hate it. Just never got into it. ). But even I know who Johnny Yong Bosch is. After Power Rangers, he started getting into voice actor in animes. His first role he ever did; which also happens to be favorite roles of his aside from Nero, is Vash the Stampede from Trigun, one of my favorite animes of all time. He comes an long way and hasn't age an bit.
This game was my real full introduction to the series, I really like this game despite its shortcomings of the campaign from Point A To B and return back to point B but with Dante. I really love Shall Never Surrender and Johnny you forgot to acknowledge the Store Theme, it’s freaking beautiful. Anyways great review and looking forward to you reviewing DMC Devil May Cry I know you’ll like it but it’s a low blow to me and the fan base to the series. But when you reach Devil May Cry 5, is one word in my opinion, “INCREDIBLE”!
There’s a reason why several action games have weapons/fighting styles mapped to controller triggers or the D-Pad, it allows the player to be as creative with the tools they are given to create their own combat scenario, Dante Vergil and Nero are perfect examples of this, same with Kratos in God of War III and Ascension, you’re giving the characters lots of versatility that make them fun to control, same thing goes for Sora in the Kingdom Hearts series, utility is EVERYTHING when it comes to these insane and over the top games.
Foolishness Johnny. You can actually attach the Blitz with Dante´s melee attacks while the lightning shield is up and negate the damage you would get with a Royal Block. Also you can fully negate the Faust´s and Mephisto ´s cloak protection by hitting their stinger.
Great review as always! DMC4 is actually my favorite of the series, even above 5. It's gaming comfort food, and some little details even make me prefer the vanilla release to SE (at least for Nero and Dante). EDIT: 3 is actually now top-place in my eyes, followed closely by 1 and 5.
@6:32 I think it's intentional that they hired various Power Rangers staff. The director of DMC1, Hideki Kamiya also worked on Viewtiful Joe which is heavily inspired by Power Rangers. Not only that, but Sparda's design in DMC1's intro draws heavy inspiration from some of the humanoid monster/alien people from the Power Ranger series (think Lord Zedd, Levira, Octomus The Master, etc). Sparda's mouth is always static for some reason, looking very similar to the villains I mentioned. (In the Power Ranger series, the humanoid-monsters heads were pretty much giant masks, so their lips would usually not move when talking) Also, not to mention the random acrobatics that Sparda does in the same scene. Pretty interesting stuff, come to think of it. The developers of the DMC series really love the Power Ranger series.
"I don't get why Nero's abilities are named like that. If it's a side dash, it should just be called a side dash. What the fuck is Table Hopper." Yeah, uhm, Nero's skills and kit are largely based on gambling terms. Roulette, Shuffle, Table Hopper, Maximum Bet, Showdown. Split, Streak. Hell. Red Queen and Blue Rose are also card terms.
About DMC: Devil May Cry, I think if all you heard about the game is negative feedback, then you probably be pleasently surprise. At the time of it's release, it was not well receive since many felt that a popular character was being replace by some emo weirdo. Now that the real Dante has returned and the game is now a curious offshoot of the series, it can be evaluated on it's own. Taken as a single gaming experience, I think it's a fine game that play very well and look pretty.
This was my first DMC game and was one of my favourites. It was also my first time seeing Dante, loving the type of music that accompanies the games, and enjoying the Spectacle Fighter genre.
They're not saying it's Dialga's theme, they're saying that the sample is the same that was used for making Dialga's CRY. Seriously, makes it really distracting if you played a lot of diamond and platinum.
I think the reason Nero feels so much better to play as is because he's been professionally trained. Dante and Vergil are amazing, but everything they've done seems largely self-taught. Since Nero was part of an organization that explicitly trained him for efficiency, it means that everything he does is coordinated, which makes his personality make more sense too.
Back in 2008, this was my first purchase when I got my PS3 and me and my younger brother were blown away by the Burial fight when he did the explosion move, Lol. We were both huge DMC fans and have played all of them up until then. Come on this was DMC in HD!!!!! Yeah I felt the same way about the story even back then
@chandllerburse737 And that's why he bailed on her afterwards- he realized "Wait, sex doesn't give me more power... you LIED >:( " and he just air-dashes out of there.
i actually remember this being the 1st devil may cry game i played at my school's anime club(got introduced to it alongside basquash, little busters, ranma 1/2 and koi koi 7.) and while even without the backtracking thought the areas were just there but never got old with the gameplay, liked nero(love both him & viola as i'd definitely say they had better handling than silver, raiden to an extent or fellow capcom characters axl/jake.) and his moments with kyrie/dante. absolutely loved dante in this game(really where i thought reuben langdon was perfect as the son of sparda/also ken & with it being only a year before bayonetta/dante's interactions with the bosses being extremely similar to bayo with the angels kept expecting the witch to be nearby chilling.). & enjoyed the special edition having trish(the gloria disguise outside fanservice was kinda pointless looking back with how they wreck things up anyways.)/lady(hope that happens again next game as i loved the trios moments together.:3) and vergil playable.
14:03 I mean when you fill out your entire cast with badass independent women, I feel like you CAN have like one or two that are lovers not fighters. Otherwise you're just going to the opposite extreme when it comes to being sexist. That having been said, I do agree Kyrie needed to be in the story more, perhaps expanding on how she and Nero met at the very least
Kyrie is a potato. As a joke a group of fellow DMC fans and I actually sat down and wrote down everything canon about Kyrie. We could barely come up with anything beyond her physical appearance, that she can sing well, and likes Nero. People love to talk about paper thin characters, but goddamn Kyrie could easily be a text entry in the compendium and no one would miss her.
@@RicochetForce did you at least jot down that she is apparently just, the nastiest fucking freak when it comes to sex 🤣? No seriously, look up the flavor text for the Sweet Surrender buster.
There's also a couple more PR actors in DMC games. Wendee Lee who voices Trish in DMC 5 voices Alpha 6 from In Space and Lost Galaxy. She does some others to. David de Lautour who Vergil in DmC plays RJ, the wolf ranger, in Jungle Fury. Shoot Jason Faunt who played Wes in Time Force mocapped for Leon in RE6
Ahhh, DMC 4, I'll forever be mad at how Capcom screwed this game over with the budget and time afforded to them, but luckily the game is still massively fun to play, with some of the deepest combat in the series. If you want more Nero info, DMC 5 does give you *some* of that, but his backstory is still mostly stuck in a Japanese only graphic novel, which tells us that Nero was an orphan raised by Kyrie's family (which adds some... implications, to their relationship unfortunately) who became anti-social due to being bullied because people thought his mom was a prostitute. He joined the order of the sword to protect the city from demons, and his demonic arm awakened during a demon attack where both his arm and Kyrie were injured, his arm transformed afterwards and he started training in secret, keeping it hidden in a cast. Anyways, with all that said, looking forward to the DMC: DMC review! I honestly think the game has some really fun gameplay (especially in the special edition), but is bogged down by some terrible writing, and just the fact that it probably shouldn't have ever been positioned as the next step for Devil May Cry

In a con panel some years ago, Reuben Langdon has stated that it was intentional getting former tokusatsu actors for DMC characters
Could you imagine the alt reality if Jason David Frank ended up becoming a character? Annnnndddd now I just made myself sad😭

The MANUAL?? People were still reading manuals back in 2008?
@@travistotle even games in 2013 had full colored Manuel’s with character and world lore, item and game mechanic descriptions in them
I think DMC4 really wasted Credo's potential as a personal rival for Nero. We got one great fight against him, and then he dies.

Hell, I doubt even a devil may cry for you." Like, it's *so* stupid, and I _love_ it!
oh god not this type of comments again.... I curse that f'n stupid spiderman vampire movie

His Devil Trigger is his bankai. XD
Wait that’s the most fire piece of trivia I’ve ever heard. That’s insanely hype.
I know next to nothing about Bleach, but seeing Ichigo and Orihime next to Nero and Kyrie, well I can certainly see the inspiration for their design in this game.
I'm wondering if Capcom was on a Bleach high during this point of time XD
DMC4 introduced Nero meanwhile DMC5 fully realizes him as a character and truly sees the torch passed onto him
Meh
16:09 When Gloria was revealed to be Trish, I immediately thought to myself “This was supposed to be its own character but the idea was scrapped due to time costraints”.
I never checked to see if that’s true or just a silly headcanon, but I swear to God that’s what it feels like to me. So, so weird how they used an incredibly detailed and original design for a silly disguise.
And WTF is that outfit Gloria sports???
It’s 100% true. A lot of story stuff was cut from 4, Gloria being no exception.
Trish doing blackface was definitely a big plot twist
Trish was just in her Lady Gaga phase, that's all. XD

Based Johnny for recognizing how peak this combat system is
If you loved Nero's gameplay in DMC 4, you'll love his gameplay in DMC 5.
The one thing i will always remember about this game is the unused Devil Trigger designs for Nero and Dante. Especially Dante's,because his was actually a Perfect Devil Trigger, much like the second form he had in the second game. I really wonder where he would have unlocked that if it was kept in the game
Luckily that evolved into DMC 5's Sin Devil Trigger which is all kinds of badass
I can see it as a reward for completing the Bloody Palace as Dante with some sort of stipulation attached.
@Rabbitlord108 That's kind of like how the Ares armor was unlocked in the first God of War,right?

I always had a huge soft spot for DMC4 because it was not only my first introduction to the seres, I also admittedly had a little bit of a crush on Nero in this game.

Same here.
While I don’t love DMC4, I certainly don’t dislike or hate the game either. It definitely has its flaws. Another addition why I liked Nero from the beginning is that he’s voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. Funny cause both Nero and Kyrie's VA also voiced Ichigo and Orihime in Bleach respectively.
At least LDK softened the blow a little bit in the vanilla PC release. Since you fight so many enemies, you earn Proud Souls *way* quicker, I find.
Not only that, but Proud Souls make the issue of Red Orbs eventually becoming useless EVEN WORSE since they take over their role for upgrades. And once you get all the abilities, Proud Souls now become actually useless. I'm really glad that 5 didn't take the same approach
Funnily enough it was worse in the OG version cause SE made it so you get proud souls faster.
@@whodatninja439 you’re not wrong actually now that I look back but having the full picture I feel 2 makes sense just being that sad middle chapter in Dante’s life where he’s left with nothing and it’s trying weird gimmicks, probably would’ve pulled the coin back out if Nero wasn’t there
@@whodatninja439that is the meta reason, OP was finding an in universe reason.
Even though DMC4 is kinda rough at parts it’s remained my favorite DMC ever since I first played it. I just love the visuals and the story so much
It also has the best location imo, 5 was great until halfway through where you’re just climbing the qilopth tower, dmc3 was just the demon tower the whole time but dmc4 had so much range in its locations
@armgom4144 Shame in the 2nd halve, u have to revisit the same areas again, but backwards.
We all get excited when Johnny uploads!
Dude his opening song gets me in such a good mood
@@Austin-gj7zjand then the ending theme comes in and makes me feel relaxed
I found Air-taunt with Nero in 5 extremely usefull as a 3rd jump or a way to change momentum during the jump

I really appreciate that you re-edited the DMC3 cutscenes, because that's how they were originally meant to look like
Neros DT is like that cuz yamato seperates things, so Nero is forcing out more devil power by splitting his human and demonic essence at the waist.
The chronological order of the DMC games is: 3, 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Somebody please let him know that.
I do love the headcanon idea that Dante was no longer the depressed version we see him in DMC2 once he discovered the existence of Nero a kindred spirit and potential family member, which he’s been missing since Nelo Angelo’s (Vergil’s) death.
Nero is how I fell in love with Johnny Young Bosch's VA work.
"Alolan Senator Armstrong" is the funniest thing I've heard all week

32:05 ''contender of one of my favourite games of all time" you are going to love DMC 5. I'm so looking forward to it! great video as always!
this one is my favourite in the series tbh. I love this game sm

About people hearing Dialga on Beal's theme
Its not referenced to the music you fight Dialga rather the sound Dialga makes when it appears
26:30
I am glad you said that because when I first fought him I was thinking the exact same thing.
I'm so glad someone else noticed that Bael's theme is literally Drop Out from DDR. I've never heard anyone else mention that, so thank you Johnny.
26:27 I just keep hearing Heatran’s cry from the Gen 4 Pokémon games.
I remember that time where we had NO idea where Nero fit on the Sparda Bloodline.
Was he Dante's Nephew?
Was he Dante's Cousin?
I don't _knooow..._
Well, come V, we got an answer to that...
Yes! always love waking up to a new Johnny vid! There's still one more vid (and its gonna be a funny one) before the storm approaches.
@6:32
I think it's intentional that they hired various Power Rangers staff.
(In the Power Ranger series, the humanoid-monsters heads were pretty much giant masks, so their lips would usually not move when talking)
Also, not to mention the random acrobatics that Sparda does in the same scene.
Pretty interesting stuff, come to think of it. The developers of the DMC series really love the Power Ranger series.
I think people meant Dialga's cry, not its theme, that was similar to Baal's theme. I definitely hear it lol
I’m surprised no one from the discord told Johnny about Nero’s overly busted charge shot and how better it is to use when swapping gun to R2/RT 🤔
"I don't get why Nero's abilities are named like that. If it's a side dash, it should just be called a side dash. What the fuck is Table Hopper."
Yeah, uhm, Nero's skills and kit are largely based on gambling terms. Roulette, Shuffle, Table Hopper, Maximum Bet, Showdown. Split, Streak. Hell. Red Queen and Blue Rose are also card terms.
I love the artwork that was featured for Nero in this video during the intro. ^_^ ❤ Curious as to who did it.
13:40
My head canon is that Vergil had a one night stand with Jeanne from Bayonetta and until it'll stay that way until disproven
Glad to see you back, was getting worried!
Loving this series so far and always appreciate the great content Johnny. :D
Back in 2008, this was my first purchase when I got my PS3 and me and my younger brother were blown away by the Burial fight when he did the explosion move, Lol. We were both huge DMC fans and have played all of them up until then. Come on this was DMC in HD!!!!! Yeah I felt the same way about the story even back then
Vergil doing the dirty with someone still feels hilariously out of character for him but I like Nero as he is so I wouldn't change it
As Dante said, "I guess you were young, too."
@chandllerburse737 And that's why he bailed on her afterwards- he realized "Wait, sex doesn't give me more power... you LIED >:( " and he just air-dashes out of there.
I've been watching this dude since I was 13. Thank you for always providing comfort when I needed it most! Love having SGB back!
i actually remember this being the 1st devil may cry game i played at my school's anime club(got introduced to it alongside basquash, little busters, ranma 1/2 and koi koi 7.) and while even without the backtracking thought the areas were just there but never got old with the gameplay, liked nero(love both him & viola as i'd definitely say they had better handling than silver, raiden to an extent or fellow capcom characters axl/jake.) and his moments with kyrie/dante.
absolutely loved dante in this game(really where i thought reuben langdon was perfect as the son of sparda/also ken & with it being only a year before bayonetta/dante's interactions with the bosses being extremely similar to bayo with the angels kept expecting the witch to be nearby chilling.).
I was literally checking if you uploaded DMC4 already this morning with the assumption TH-cam notifications just didn’t notify me.
