@@DaimoHope agreed, big time that said his/its(?) use in the story was kinda cool, I like how it had a connection to the underworld and killing it felt like the first moment you really pissed them off, by killing one of their own, just the simple fact that it was the first one you fight adds a lot to that
Sounds like it's almost as bad as the final dungeon in Octopath Traveler that I heard how nightmare it was.
I had to do the one quest for MSQ, but I was determined to finish it after the first few quests…

That's usually the sign that said 'Oh no... the game drove him to drink'.
So, funny enough, the Steam version actually has an exploit that means you basically never have to re-do anything if you party-wipe, and makes the Crystal Tower problems basically non-existent.
If you press Start to open the "pause" menu (carried over from the Mobile version i presume), you're given the option to Continue, or Quit. If you select Quit, you close the game, and when you reload it, you're back right when the last quicksave was. This is usually the start of a floor, since the Steam version has auto-quicksaving. But it also quicksaves at the start of every random encounter. So if you wipe in an encounter, and then open the menu and Quit instead of progressing through the Game Over sequence... you spawn right back where you got the encounter that wiped you, no worse for wear.
It's hilarious, and yes, it also works for boss fights, putting you back at the start of the room, so the Crystal Tower and World of Darkness... aren't nearly as stressful!
I have no idea why the world map outside the crystal tower was the last “save point” in the game 🤦♂️ (only know the DS version which did *next to nothing* with the top screen)
Thank God the Pixel Remasters are getting options to multiply EXP and turn off random encounters, on top of the checkpoints and save areas in the Crystal Tower that already made it less of a kick in the dick!

Having slogged through the crystal tower in the pixel remaster recently, I can 100% sympathize with John's liver on this one.
Exp boost fixes the problem
and also they actually give you free healing spots during the World of Darkness so at least you can get away with grinding a little easier

This was actually the first mainline numbered Final Fantasy game I ever completed. It was the DS Remake.
The remake is harder bosses get 2 attacks making the game harder and it still suffers from all the nes problems

Ehhh... I'd say it evens out given how much stronger nearly every class is (and how much more lategame viable most of them are). Definitely some spikes here and there (Salamander, Garuda...) but on the whole I don't think it's significantly harder, may even be a tiny bit easier. Helps that healing magic is a *lot* stronger multi-targeting in the remake.

I’ve been going through the DS remake for the first time and I’ve found it really easy, for the Garuda fight I only had one dragoon that had almost no level in the job and it only took 2 tries. I might have just got lucky
This was my 2nd rpg ever and my first final fantasy game. No amount of nostalgia will make me like the crystal tower

i have final fantasy 3 pixel remaster on steam and i must say that the remastered soundtrack and pixel work is a god send
Absolutely refuse to believe this video came out a year ago. I remember being bored out of my mind at work, trying to find a video to listen to, and this popped up in my notifications.
The biggest problem with this game is how it treats job classes as another tool as opposed to a different play style. You want to use the jobs you enjoying playing as, but the game effectively forces you to use jobs that are tailored for the situation.

@Tom Ffrench I disagree, I'd say it would've been better to allow players to simply try out the new abilities and understand their strengths and weaknesses that way.
@@thatoneguy4452 biggest issue is that there's a penalty for switching job classes; factor in FF3 mobs and how a lot of them can easily deal significant damage to your party it completely slows the pace of this game while getting rid of what makes the job classes games great: the flexibility.
@@TheRaidantDX the PR version removes the job penalty, which was only a stat debuff in the 3D version.

The balance between light and dark is yet another thematic inspiration from the Elric saga in Final Fantasy, and I love how much you can find in the games.
You mean Erdrick saga. Elric is FMA, Erdrick is Dragon Quest.

Ironically though the Elrics were named after Elric of Melnibone since Arikawa is a fan of the character.
The character of Elric, and the works of Michael Moorecock, are so influential you can find bits of it in alot of popular media. From Warhammer, to Fullmetal Alchemist, to Game of Thrones, to Shin Megami Tensei, and alot more.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been so depressed from a Johnny Vs video. I mean this was still good but damn I feel like I was slogging with him through the tower I mean what the hell.
When even the devs apologize for how crappy a dungeon is, you know you're in for a bad time.
I understand Johnny’s feelings on 3 so much, I played the game myself cuz I played and beaten 1 and 2, I played 3 on the DS and I’m like this game isnt too bad, it has some bullshit boss fights and the “Job Sickness” can be irritating and like he stated, I got to the Crystal Tower and I’m just like “what the hell did I do to deserve this??” And ALSO like Johnny I was underleveled so I got my ass handed to me by Cloud of Darkness, I didn’t have the patience to grind like him (I regret this way more now) so I kept replaying the boss fight in till I won without do any grinding, I won but I wasted more time going straight for the boss fight than anything else, I had pleasant memories but god damn did it leave some scarring, I won’t ever go back to the game cuz it’s just not worth playing again
@@SpoonyBard-mx1ve My experience with 3 is extremely limited. I saw the DS game at a convention. I said “hey I haven’t played this one yet” I started playing. I think I played about a half hour of it and then stopped. I couldn’t tell you why honestly. I enjoyed that half hour but for whatever reason I just didn’t follow up on that. Whenever I do play the game again I’m at least glad to have received the warning about the Crystal Tower now.
@@geeboysgamesandmore49 yeah my parents got me the game since I was playing the final fantasy games, I was on and off when I was playing it so there were times I forgot what I was doing in the game, I didn’t know anything about the game at the time so I was completely blind, I’m still surprised I shoveled through the Crystal tower tho

They have an autobattle function that makes grinding more tolerable and the Mognet sidequests aren't a pain to activate.

You know that the developers found Xande forgettable when one of the only times he's been referenced is later Final Fantasy media (Outside of the mobile games I THINK) is in 14.

Having played the remake on the Nintendo DS about 3 times, I completely agree with your analysis of the Crystal Tower, and did even back then when I was a child. It's way too long and way too limited on healing/saving options. I'm surprised the devs hated it too! Now that's a fun fact.

Fun fact: FF3 job switching system was inspired by DQ3’s job switching system (although in DQ 3 you could change classes when you reached the all trades Abbey and your character was lvl 20)

FF3 on the DS was my first traditional FF experience. I just assumed I was garbage at JRPGs at that point. I gave up at the Crystal Tower. As far as I was concerned, I beat it.
I recently played the DS remake for the second time and, remembering how soul-crushing the crystal tower was, grinded levels like an idiot until every encounter was a cakewalk. It was super-tedious, but I was not going to struggle through hours of that dungeon with the possibility of death around every corner. How freaking hard would it have been for them to just put a save point or two throughout? Seriously!
III helped give us the best expansion in XIV, so it was all worth it in the end.
Drunk Johnny is best Johnny. But man, that Crystal Tower sounds like hell definitely not subjecting myself to that. Now to wait till I can conquer the Tower of Kagustuchi again.

This was my first ds game I got for Christmas with the system. I’ll never forget the first boss I think that was the giant turtle by the crystal. Blew my little brain and opened me up to JRPGS! Thank you for covering this time goes too quickly.
Thank goodness the Pixel Remaster merges the best of 3D and Famicom together and eliminates Capacity Points as well as Job Sickness. Now it's like FF5, just swap as you need, with the classes being rebalanced for an intermediary. Not to mention the lenience via additional items and the Quick Saves / autosaves that turn things like the Crystal Tower into a far less grueling experience.
High-Johnny is my favourite Kingdom Hearts character. Nice to see him come back after disappearing since Super Mario Sunshine.
I'm pretty convinced that the reason Final Fantasy 3 is my favorite is mostly because it was my first Final Fantasy
It's not my favorite, but the Ds remake was my first final fantasy, so I had a lot of fond memories of it. I thought the story was interesting and I liked the gameplay enough. It does kind of hurt that not many people liked it, but yeah that final dungeon sucks, I've never beaten the game because of that. Lol

Reading the cropped ending text as it was funnier than it had any right to be, to the point I was crying while trying to keep my voice down in the employee lounge.
Ok Johnny's feelings about the final dungeon were scarily accurate to mine when I was playing FF3 on DS back in 2006/2007. After several grueling hours of Crystal Tower and too many end bosses, I lost to Cloud of Darkness shortly after particle beam. I had the same inner thoughts like "Oh shit I can't do this, I thought I was prepared!" This is when the game's lack of in-dungeon save points peaked at frustration, and the thought of redoing that whole Tower made me ragequit FF3 for the only time in my RPG career. The game was tolerable until the Crystal Tower and its inevitable difficulty spike at the end.
Then, 12 freaking years later, I finished FF2 on GBA, through the power of grinding and increased tolerance. Realizing I could listen to these magical things called podcasts while grinding in JRPGs, I decided to dive back into my FF3 save file and grind about 15 levels for good measure, over several days. Once my party was Lvl 65, I chose to charge through the Crystal Tower again. Once I got thru the mirror, I began to sweat, knowing that I could die in rage all over again like 2007. But buying hella shurikens came in handy, and I FINALLY vanquished the final boss with my party of Summoner, Ninja, Devout, and Knight. It only took a dozen years, but I'm finally proud I got belated revenge on that stupid last dungeon/boss.
I got to the end of Pixel Remaster with four maxed out Dragoons, each equipped with two blood lances. Sages were not necessary. 😎

Wow, This was a very good review! You explained perfectly all of my major problems with this game, as well as what I liked about it. I think that if you’re only going to play one version, then the remake on steam or DS is just far better than the original version. It fixes the major issues that cropped up in the hardware limitations of the original version on Famicom. The Crystal Palace still sucks and I basically went through the same headache as you did with it (failed first time, so frustrated that I had to go through it again). So much grinding at the end. The trip to the end was fun but just trying to grind enough to beat the final boss is too much of a pain.
