  • Is the Sony XR A80J OLED still a great buy in 2022? I wanted to re-cover the TV as well as showcase how great it looks as a final video for it. It has left my hands, and I will be looking to new models in 2022.

Yeah I’ve had mine since about January and have only just started to appreciate its capabilities to competitors televisions.
I actually got it as a substitute to a Samsung AU8000 and was a little jaded by it , but hey it’s pretty darn good when you really look at its ability.

I'm excited to see the differences between the A80J and A80K. I bought an A80J 8 or 9 months ago, (because of your positive review), and I couldn't be happier. I am not someone who seems to notice the dimming during gaming, but I also play on peak brightness medium (in SDR) to avoid hitting the ABL as fast. My assumption is that the A80K is only a small improvement over A80J but if it has a trump card up its sleeve, it might entice me.

I bought A80j a few days ago, upgrading from a 2017 sony LED TV. It’s amazing. Do not get me wrong, the 2017 model was the x90 series with the local dimming. But the difference is still day and night. And I totally agree with you that A80k will be very similar to the a80j, just the same as lg c2 to the c1. But at this time, the c2 55 inches is more than $1000 more expensive than the same size c1 in the Australia market. Which makes no sense for most people to pay for that much to get that bit of improvement

@@rb9688 I ended up with a 50” A80J because the Good Guys couldn’t deliver a Samsung AU8000 after purchase, around December /January 2020/2021 I think, maybe it was this year(I have a brain injury, a ABI. But man am I happy with the Sony, the best part is the Remote is compatible with my older Sony HD television I replaced, well I retired it from the lounge and moved to my bedroom . Picked up the 77 inch A80J about a month ago, and it's an amazing display. Calibrated using Calman, a Calibrite Color Checker Display Plus, profiled with an i1 Pro 2 Spectro, and a PGenerator.
Followed your step by step autocal video, and the results are stunning. You're also spot on regarding the pink tint and cyan tint at different viewing angles for full white screens.
Thanks, Classy. Your videos have been a huge help in my transition from my old, trusty plasmas to OLED.

    • @davidanonymous4284
      @davidanonymous4284 ปีที่แล้ว

@@orwinfernandes6381 Very, very tough call. For the average person, I'd go with the 77 inch A95K.
For me specifically, I'd have to think very long and hard about it for this reason: very respected pro calibrators believe that quantum dot displays cannot be properly calibrated by a budget spectro. (e.g., i1 Pro 2/3)
Basically, if you don't have a reference grade spectro, which costs between $8,000 and $15,000 USD, there's no point in even attempting to perform a calibration of a QD-OLED / LED.
I have a budget spectro, and I'm not sure I'll ever get a reference grade meter.
If I ever get a quantum dot display, I'd have to hire a pro to come and calibrate it. I'm not sure I could go back to those days again.

I think I'm actually going to return my 65 A80J for the 77inch. I thought the 77inch looked a little better and a bit brighter in the store but kinda thought maybe it was just perception cuz the 65 inch was next a mini LED tv while the 77inch was showcased on its own. At the time the 77inch was a full 1200more because the 65 was on sale. So I went with the 65 inch but ever since I got it home, unless its pitch black in the room I'm not as wow'd as I thought I would be and in some cases I'm a little let down with the dullness of some scenes.
This kind of reassures me that my initial impressions weren't mislead and the 77inch was indeed brighter because it was a more selectively picked evo panel. Or maybe I just got a duller A80j panel. In any case I sit a whopping 15 feet away, I really do need more tv at that distance.

I bought my 77 inch A80J from COSTCO one year ago. Be sure to use Classy's picture settings if you want the picture to look its best. Using custom mode and using his settings will make a big difference. Using custom mode also turns off the {Sony Face Recognition Technology} that to me unnaturally brightens the faces of people and other animals that was driving me crazy. Also, this TV does an excellent job of upscaling Blu-Ray player video and Cable HD DVR video and other HD video sources to 4K with no motion artifacts. GOOD CHOICE!!

For that price and Costco return policy I think it is worth giving the C1 at least 90 days to make sure it is what I want. After watching many many comparison videos between the C1 and the a80j and doing lots of research, I finally went with the a80j.
Even though I am a gamer, it seemed to me like the "gaming features" of the C1 are none features. I can't say anything about the picture quality of the C1 because I never got one, but based on all comparisons on youtube it's not even close. The a80j seems to do a better job at bringing brightness where brightness is needed and darkness where darkness is needed. The color on the C1 also looks like it's on vivid mode compared to the a80j.

I own 3 OLEDs The LG CX & C1 & The Sony A8H.. I prefer the Sony over the LG in terms of picture quality, I kinda hate the black crush on the LG's it's annoying watching dark movies, my eyes struggle to enjoy dark scenes on the Lg, you can fix that by turning on the dynamic contrast at the cost of washed out image which I don't really like. So I'm returning the C1 to get a Sony A80J. Gotta give it to LG because of the gaming features and the prices of its TVs. But honestly I tried to play competitive COD on the 48 Inch and it's a bit tiring cuz the panel is still big. So for playing competitive games I'd go for the 42 inches. However if your not into FPS games at the highest level you don't really need the LG the Sony OLED will be perfect also if what you want is to play Campaign with Max Graphics then the the Sony is the best option. Though I was thinking to get the 42 Inch LG C2 for playing competitive but I think I'm just gonna stick with my 25 Inch Gaming Monitor... Forgot to mention that I got a the A80J for only $1300 Brand New from Amazon and Free Installation as well what a steal.

The one and only question I have left which I can’t seem to find answer for - if the 55 inch models have a dimmer screen than larger models - is this eliminated by the fact that a80j had panel updates in later models that were brighter - were they all EQAUL then ? And was this issue guaranteed to be true ? Or was it related to the panel lottery ? Meaning, if you got the good panel - were they all EQAUL ? That’s a different question , I know - but the first one is the important one. Thanks . 99 percent sure I’m getting a c2. Final details haha

Compared to my old C8 it gets brighter and has less black crush, full screen bright scenes are much better on the Sony, bright highlights hit harder and skin tones are much better. @@Kenjis9965 have you experienced any of the ABL dimming issues when gaming that so many people talk about? It seems it might be a bug or maybe a panel lottery thing because I've seen people using it at max brightness with big static hud elements say it doesn't dim at all, and others playing games with little to no hud elements in them say it dims significantly over time

@@sengan2475 I think it depends on the games you play, duration and other factors. In short no i do not experience the abl issue others have reported and I've been very impressed with how it's worked for gaming

@Classy, based on your comparation video a80j VS x95j. Are there any similarities which can be applied also to x95j? During a day a hitting lot of sun from side window so I am thinking more about led with higher britness anyway as usual black is also advantage at night 😂 based on your expi with instalation could a80j handle this without any issue? Thank a lot

I’ll let you know in a week. Bought a80j for a new house to test in the living room.. South facing, 12’, floor to ceiling windows, in a very sunny state. Friend has same TV in bright room and that’s what sold me on this oled. Although, my room is a step up.
Have a bright q8 to compare it against. Hopefully all goes well. I’m sick of Samsung and all their issues.

Hi, i just got an 55 a80j and it’s very dark in all the menus, youtube browsing and so on. When you play something it’s bright and shiny but when navigating, it’s quite dark. I’m using custom profile with all the settings turned off including light senzor. Is this normal?

Yes, Sony dims menus deliberately and this can't be changed.
